As a person with ADHD, I love seeing people with a life-long hyperfocus, who eventually go "eh, I'll open a museum". It's magic little places like these, born of one person's passion, that stores so much social history. Gary is a wonderful guide to his very, very wonderful museum
I was going to comment that it's most likely autistic hyperfocus since it's clearly very deep and long-term, but another commenter beat me to it. But yeah, autistic hyperfocus has been responsible for a lot of cool historical preservation for sure
Another fun fact, Teddy Roosevelt's daughter Alice had a snake named Emily Spinach! I think about that once a day, and obviously Emily was destined to work with reptiles!
Alice Roosevelt was a wild and exciting woman, definitely her father’s daughter. She gave absolutely zero damns about what anyone thought, and I admire that about her. And Theodore hands-down has to be one of the greatest and most interesting US President who ever lived.
The pet history museum looks like MY JAM oh my gosh I could spend all day there. I loved getting to hear Gary talk about all the cool stuff and history.
I agree! It was super interesting to see how pets have been housed through the years. Most of the enclosures would be considered "cruel" compared to minimum sizes nowadays. I still think the stroller cage could be modified to work for a bird, in the correct temperature parameters of course and not necessarily for long distances; a short jaunt to the mailbox or round the yard wouldn't be out of the question in my opinion. 🤷🏻♀️
I'd never really thought about the history of pet care but that museum was SO cool! I also think I could watch elephant seals flicking sand over themselves for hours.
As an Austrian when you said ‚Wienerschnitzel‘ I was thinking about our traditional dish of schnitzl out of calf meat. The name was even written the same but the restaurant was as far from a Viennese one as can be. 😂
It’s a deliberate play on the name. It’s not uncommon for Americans to hear of “wiener schnitzel” and think it’s a hot dog/sausage dish. Plus, if I recall the restaurant was founded in the 60s when most American palates were much more narrow than they are today. Most Americans back then (especially those with no German or Austrian roots) wouldn’t be familiar with actual Wiener schnitzel. I grew up with the restaurant and with my grandma making schnitzel (but not Wiener schnitzel) occasionally, so I never made the connection until I was older, lol.
Gary should make a travelling exhibit with items from the Museum! Like when Tinley or other animal conventions happen he should get booth space to have an exhibit at the convention so people can come in and learn about enclosures of the past and Pet history...also to donate to his museum as well. It sounds like it'd be a good learning experience and be a good way to bring in money to his museum, however I'm not sure how much that all would cost.
The Monterey Bay aquarium is one of if not the most ethical and conservation focused aquariums in the world, they do a lot of awesome conservation work particularly with their local sea otters. I haven’t been there in a few years the isopods are definitely a new thing, I’ll have to go back there sometime soon and check them out lol!
The mermaid tank was by far my favorite! I love old vaudeville and circus acts and always wondered how they made mermaids look so real. The air behind the shell makes so much sense! Love it!
The museum is actually pretty cool! I love antique stuff, they have so many interesting histories and backgrounds, that’s really amazing to know. And the giant isopods are one of my favorite creatures, they’re very popular in my country. I wanna get a realistic plushie but it’s pretty expensive!
Oh my goodness! This is my backyard! Monterey and San Luis Obispo is an amazing area to explore. I have been going to the aquarium my whole life its such an amazing place. Im so glad the zoo med folks got you to try Firestone tritip! Its some of the best in the area! It was so crazy to see you guys driving around my hometown! So happy you enjoyed it!
The Steinhart Zoo, Aquarium, and Reptile House are all pretty epic, too. Great childhood memories! I fell in love with reptiles from visiting there. My poor mom sat on a bench outside to "rest her feet" because she was too terrified to go in.
I have a few pieces or Vaseline glass and I've finally just displayed them with UV lighting. I had no idea that fish bowls made out of it were a thing! Now I have an extra item to add to my bucket list!
Baby stroller bird cage! We've got people who gather at the nearby park with their birds in cages every weekend. A stroller cage would be a great idea.
That just gave me the idea for a bird park, like a dog park but for birds. It'd have to be a covered area like they've got at a lot of zoos and conservation areas but that could be really cool if you had a large-ish community of bird-owners in a given area. For security, you'd probably need to do an "airlock" style door system, and make it like a lot of public dog parks where you have to have a pass/card to get in. The card certifies that you're responsible for your pet and what it does, and that it has had any relevant or necessary shots/etc.
I just started collecting vintage hamster cages about a year ago and I cannot describe to you how excited I was to see those 1800's mouse cages!!!! My oldest is a 1963 (or 68' I didn't have the packaging next to me) hamster/ mouse cage, still with all the original pieces and box!!! It's a dream of mine to find old boxes of hamster food, after I missed out of a NIB hartz set that came with the original food, bedding, and chew toys that had to have been from the 70's - 80's
Ed trying to say Monterey was killing me 😂! I'm so glad y'all found my fave aquarium! Cali is home to some interesting history with Marineland and of course SeaWorld 🙄 as well as the San Diego Zoo we are big on some conservation! Look at the Condors💜🦅
I was volunteering at the California Wildlife Center some years back when the first seal/sea lion crisis hit, and I know SeaWorld took in a TON of the overflow that the marine mammal centers couldn't handle. They made sure the animals were rehabilitated.
I love seeing you guys vlog on your trips! It's so fun to see you guys travel and explore and get to be tourists in your free time (even though most of these trips stem from going somewhere for work or a reptile show/conference). I know it's extra work to film and edit these vlogs, but I know I'm not the only one when I say that we'd love to see more of your adventures ❤
Agreed! For those of us who can't travel, or travel specifically to where they're going (not everyone can go hang out with the ceo of zoo med lol) it's nice to see their perspective and unique experiences. Plus, it's usually a very educational experience, sometimes in ways you might not have thought about before.
Hearing about the elephant seal population bouncing back is amazing! That makes me so happy. And these babies look like they’re living the LIFE! sunbathing on the beach!
I would have LOVED to visit that museum! So many cool items on such a niche, but interesting subject, not common for museums, but so very relatable to the average person.
Brisket comes from the front end of the cow, from the chest area. Tri-tip comes from the rear end, where the meat is more tender. As a pampas habitant I would argue tri-tip is superior, but each country values different cuts.
There used to be horse bread too before we had horse pellets! It was a lightweight, somewhat predigested food that was good for giving horses condensed energy on the go
I’m so glad you got to visit Monterey Bay Aquarium! I haven’t been there in years but I used to go a bit when I was a little girl, my favorite exhibits were the otters and the batray petting exhibit. It’s a very lovely and educational spot.
Aww! I went to see the elephant seals a few years back! I got to see the males sizing up! Oh the noises thay made! You could feel the noises in your chest or when they would slam into each other! It was so interesting!!! I could spend hours there just watching them in their natural habitat! How fun! 🥰
I liked the museum of all of the old things that we kept our pets in. When I got a parakeet back in the early 70s, my father gave me a birdcage that was from the 50s and it was beautiful. It had Stainglass. It was a brass cage with Stainglass around the bottom, I really like that cage. Thank you for bringing back some of my memories.
Your question of the day has a very interesting answer. Before the "W" existed the letter was written out as either two U's or two V's. They were eventually combined into a new letter, and you can see some fonts use two V's and some use two U's to make the W. Most languages actually pronounce the W as double V whereas English pronounces it as double U.
The Aquarium was one of the places I went several times a year. The Jellyfish and Sea Otters are my favorites. Those pet items were really cool! I'd love to be able to get lost in there.
Monterrey Bay is my favorite place in the world. That brought so many memories from living in CA. The aquarium has a bunch of new exhibits. I’m so glad you went there.
I spot a pupper in that museum! I hope he gets pets - Jasper is his name and he gets pets! Mermaid tank is amazing, I think that's my fav, but we didn't get to see the oldest reptile store!
Dav Kaufman did a video on the oldest reptile store a couple years ago. If you search his name and East Bay Vivarium it should come up. It's a pretty cool place. :)
I live about 30 minutes from Monterey and I am glad you liked the aquarium! I grew up going to that aquarium and still love going there even as an adult! Bubble gum alley is gross and weird and minty fruit is probably the best way to describe that smell. It was so cool to see the elephant seals! Ano Nuevo is a wonderful place to visit during elephant seal season!
Man i love that museum! All his knowledge and passion and his voice are perfect. I saw the website but gonna check to see if theres a YT bc i could spend hours watching him and listening to his voice
Monterey is always crappy weather, that's why I live inland in Gilroy, its perfect weather yet close enough to go anywhere, the aquarium, Santa cruz boardwalk, San Francisco etc
I'm literally in love with the vlogs! You guys are so funny and always bring us along in your journey teaching us new things but without being boring, and you make every place looks so unique every single time! I just love it!
I'm from north of San Francisco and Monterrey is one of the coolest places in all of NorCal! I'm sooo glad you got to experience the fun and wonder the area has to offer, and thanks so much for sharing it all with us!
As a born and raised Californian all of your California vlogs make me laugh! It’s fun getting to see y’all discover things that are so normal for me cuz u grew up with them 😂
I LOVE the adventures of Emily and Ed shows! The Museum of pet care was so cool! I grew up on Long Island and loves to visit Sagamore Hill, Teddy Roosevelt's home aka the summer White House!
Oh wow! Cool trip! I loved the museum, and could have spent several hours scouring all the shelves and corners. I lived in Santa Cruz when the aquarium was built and still list it among one of the best places to visit, on earth! Glad you had an opportunity to see it.
Tri-tip is the triangular cut of beef cut from the bottom of the sirloin. It is part of Santa Maria style BBQ. (Santa Maria is about 30 miles south of SLO aka San Luis Obispo.)
If you guys ever head out to Chicago, I'd love to see you check out their aquarium too! But more importantly: the Field Museum for their dinosaurs!! Plus the massive amount of taxidermied animals to see really interesting reptiles and even bugs there, that'd be cool If you had time, their museum of science and industry isn't particularly channel related buuuttt it's unforgettable for sure, major fun with an indoor landslide, indoor tornado, coal mine tours, half a plane, and a Tesla coil!
This is so heccin neat! As a lifelong lover of antiques and oddities (and have the ADHD strong enough to lecture you enthusiastically about why each and every one of those things is cool)... I hope to someday open a museum like this gent! Or at least or visit this amazing tribute to history someday ✨
Υou can still make or buy a little carnival wheel for your small parrot/softbilled bird. I know a lot of people whose birds love them and I can't wait to try them out for my birds. Some really enjoy going round and round, while others use them as regular perches. Fun to watch, you can find videos online. I wonder how bg and sturdy one would have to be for a bird like Cheyenne!
Bubble Gum Alley has been in San Luis Obispo since my parents were kids. I’m almost 50 and remember it when I was a little kid. They actually protected it when they made all the businesses in San Luis do seismic retrofitting after the earthquake in 2003, lol. Cool to see you guys visiting and filming places in my home county. The elephant seals and sea lions are actually too much of a success story. They’re quite overpopulated in several areas on the West Coast now and are causing lots of problems with the fishing industry and due to their continued protected status there is no management plan in place to control the population. They’re a nightmare when you’re fishing, they’ll steal your fish right off your hook and you’ll just reel up a head, lol.
When my husband first moved to Reno (we're on the northern California line), that's when I discovered Tri Tip wasn't known all over the country. He's from Oklahoma, and he asked me what it was, I didn't know, I haven't eaten meat in 20 years, plus he was in FFA, so he knew meat cuts, like all of them. So, I think we googled it. It's the piece under the sirloin and top sirloin. But that's when I found out Tri Tip doesn't appear in other states east of here.
Y’all talking about how you always bring the cold with you whenever you travel is the complete opposite of my family. As a Texan with family in the Midwest, we have always brought the hot humid with us on vacation
Love seeing travel vlogs and from Snake Discovery just makes my day even better. Love the fact that they’re in Monterey and went to the aquarium I grew up going to when I lived there.
Monterey Bay is an amazing aquarium! They have a lot of really great educational programs and do a ton of research. They have a UA-cam channel where they post videos from their deep sea submarine research vessel. Super cool!
Emily: If you like Mac-n-cheese, whenever you go to the store and you see those frozen Mac-n-cheese bakes, grab one of those and get some Colby Jack cheese and some mozzarella, crumble some bacon on top and throw it in the oven. Omg it's so good! (Same set-up with twice baked potatos too. Just kinda scoop out some of the filling from each potato and put the cheese and bacon in it, especially thick cut applewood smoked bacon. Mmm... I am totally gonna make some of those tonight.)
I had to laugh when you mentioned Weinerschitzel because when i visited burbank I saw one and went "oh i HAVE to eat here" for the same VERY mature reasons 5:28
Glad you guys enjoyed my hometown, I used to live two blocks from the aquarium and one of my favorite things to do is walk from cannery row to fisherman's wharf and get clam chowder
I don’t live in California but I go there all the time and the Monterey aquarium and the elephant seals have a special place in my heart. I’m so glad you guys enjoyed them! 🥹☺️
As a person with ADHD, I love seeing people with a life-long hyperfocus, who eventually go "eh, I'll open a museum". It's magic little places like these, born of one person's passion, that stores so much social history. Gary is a wonderful guide to his very, very wonderful museum

Another fun fact, Teddy Roosevelt's daughter Alice had a snake named Emily Spinach! I think about that once a day, and obviously Emily was destined to work with reptiles!
OMG, what a great name for a snake! Alice sounds like a cool kid.
The reasoning for the snake's name was hilarious, too. Apparently Alice said the snake was "green like spinach and skinny like my Aunt Emily".
Alice Roosevelt was a wild and exciting woman, definitely her father’s daughter. She gave absolutely zero damns about what anyone thought, and I admire that about her.
And Theodore hands-down has to be one of the greatest and most interesting US President who ever lived.
That's cool LOL
I had forgotten about that, I love the name. The snake very well could have been kept in there. As I remember they had quite a few unusual pets.

Finding out Ed makes s-tier brisket is something I didn't expect to learn from this video, but I'm glad I did 😂
The fact that Shane was over at theirs and also liked Ed's brisket better makes me smile. And hungry. It really makes me hungry...
As an Austrian when you said ‚Wienerschnitzel‘ I was thinking about our traditional dish of schnitzl out of calf meat. The name was even written the same but the restaurant was as far from a Viennese one as can be. 😂

I'm Dutch, but was thinking the same.
To balance it out, we need a donut store without donuts in Europe.

It’s a deliberate play on the name. It’s not uncommon for Americans to hear of “wiener schnitzel” and think it’s a hot dog/sausage dish.

Oh wow! Cool trip! I loved the museum, and could have spent several hours scouring all the shelves and corners. I lived in Santa Cruz when the aquarium was built and still list it among one of the best places to visit, on earth! Glad you had an opportunity to see it.
Im from the UK but I cannot express enough how much I would love to visit that meseum I bet its such a fascinating place to go to!
Plus the massive amount of taxidermied animals to see really interesting reptiles and even bugs there, that'd be cool
If you had time, their museum of science and industry isn't particularly channel related buuuttt it's unforgettable for sure, major fun with an indoor landslide, indoor tornado, coal mine tours, half a plane, and a Tesla coil!
This is so heccin neat! As a lifelong lover of antiques and oddities (and have the ADHD strong enough to lecture you enthusiastically about why each and every one of those things is cool)... I hope to someday open a museum like this gent! Or at least or visit this amazing tribute to history someday ✨

This aquarium is quite literally my happy place, love it so much
The vintage bird cage is so cool, so much detail
1:15 Star Trek: the Voyage Home filming site for all us trekkies in the audience, where Spock mind melds with Gracie
Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of my favorite places in the world ❤ so happy you got to go
Υou can still make or buy a little carnival wheel for your small parrot/softbilled bird. I know a lot of people whose birds love them and I can't wait to try them out for my birds. Some really enjoy going round and round, while others use them as regular perches. Fun to watch, you can find videos online. I wonder how bg and sturdy one would have to be for a bird like Cheyenne!
Monterey Bay aquarium is absolutely amazing. Love that place. And the sea lions in the docks..
What a great museum. Thank you, Ed and Emily for showing us your trip to California. 😊❤️🙏🇦🇺🐍🐊🦎🐢🐸
I could have watched the museum tour for much, much longer. Those were some fascinating treasures!
Whished this video was much longer. Both the museum and the aquarium.
Now MoAPh has a youtube channel!
Awesome video as always
I love the Hammerhead Shark joke!!!
Ed needs a cooking segment.
Food discovery. And his guests will be zoo inhabitants.
I grew up in CA, and we would go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium frequently, a lot of nostalgia watching this!
Y’all talking about how you always bring the cold with you whenever you travel is the complete opposite of my family. As a Texan with family in the Midwest, we have always brought the hot humid with us on vacation
so glad you got to visit the monterey bay aquarium! it's one of the best in the US and one of my absolute favorite places in california
Careful uranium glass easily becomes an obsession 😅 It's amazong glass 😍
This is _amazing!_ I could easily spend hours listening to this guy show us his cool collection!
YAY! successful conservation effort!😇
Out favorite part was the bird cages you showed. Thanks for the fun video!
I love the jellyfish room at the Monterey Bay Aquarium! So peaceful and quiet!
That museum is so cool! Would love to see more.
