    Absolutely agree with the point that resolution is less important than sensor quality. I have been watching hundreds of VR180 and VR360 videos on UA-cam. Many of them are 4K when you play them but the quality difference from the best to the worst is truly vast. I was going to ask you about this but then you posted this video. I am still waiting for a 60fps 8K VR 180 or 360 3D HDR video before I drop a lot of money on a camera though. I want high quality source material and drop the resolution for UA-cam myself if needed.

      @@hughhou I am thinking of something more consumer priced. 8K is just around the corner so I will have to be patient. I keep expecting VR video to get huge (again). Perhaps it will happen when Apple releases their consumer priced headset. Personally, I am hopelessly addicted going places and seeing things I never could otherwise. It's like being able to instantly travel to a random point in time and space. Imagine how much fun it will be visiting the lunar base in a few years.

      If you are interested in a consumer 8K VR180 camera - there is one coming and I blur it out in this video but we are testing and and making the review / tutorial as well. So lots of on going project here happen at the same time.

    • @ClarkFable
      @ClarkFable 12 днів тому +1

      Now it's all about delivery bitrate, and unfortunately nobody hosts video capable of getting anywhere close to what comes off a camera like the R5C 60fps 8k, so I don't think a better camera is what's needed right now. UA-cam could quadruple their bitrates and there would still be significant room for improvement.

    • @BlueHound
      @BlueHound 12 днів тому +1

      @@ClarkFable Here's the thing though: UA-cam does host 4K VR 180 3D and 360 2D and 3D video but even though the format is the same the quality is hugely different. I have seen 4K video that looks like 8K video and also as bad as 1080p video (or even worse). Switching to a high quality stream is like a breath of fresh air. This implies sensor or video processing software that is capable of much higher quality video in the same exact video format. Hugh's comment implies that the best video quality currently comes from a professional 8K source which is then down converted to 4K, including color correction, before being uploaded to UA-cam.

      Nice! I hope to push out our tutorial soon for you for reference. Still a lot to learn after a month use lol. It is easy but not as easy as EVO point and shoot. To get the max dynamic range will need some manual skills and having a external monitor will help to shoot outdoor under the sun. Don't trust the small display for nailing focus (even auto) - check monitor first and stop the tempation to move the camera (so easy to move it but try not to)

      It depends on what the client is going to do with it. I upload to UA-cam for fun but my recent client wanted me to make a VR video for them to put on an apple vision pro and they could show it to clients at manufacturing conventions.
      So in that case I really needed the 8k FF sensor. As it would be played natively from the VR googles.

    Hi Hugh, long time fan. Just pulled the trigger on our first vr camera with the r7 kit. Can't wait to start filming training content for the skilled trades. For my use it is perfect since I'll be staying in the 3-4ft sweet spot range. I remember you mentioned something about using a tool to up frame the video content from 30fps to 60fps. Could you possibly do a video about that. That 8k up rez is awesome from the 4k fine. Big fan love your work. I'm one of those people willing to download your videos. Thanks again!

      Awww thank you! I will first stick to 30fps. If you have the time use Topaz for 8K up rez. It also does 60fps but I will reframe doing so as it take forever and it will has some artifacts. I will follow up with more tutorial soon.

    Hi bro, I'm a filmmaker from India. First of all thank you so much for the video. I have a small correction in your term @5:05. It's not 14 stops, actually it's 14bit. Dynamic range is measured in Stops and Color depth will be measured in Bits. Converting RAW photos to ProRes will save it with 14bit color data not 14stops.

    This is really great, Hugh-thank you!!! A question: what gimbal would you recommend for the R7/RF-S dual fisheye combo that would give maximum portability but still work well enough in this setup for run-and-gun shooting? Would a DJI RS 3 be adequate? I only shoot for my own personal (not commercial) travel recording, but I still want the best quality I can get for MQ3/AVP use.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  12 днів тому +1

      I use the RS 4 (not Pro) at AWE. But for international travel - I will just use this for smallest size and portability and don't need that fancy external display: ua-cam.com/video/KF8DY2pVLWA/v-deo.htmlsi=gTS8Bw7MajGtXIf7 - also the light really come with handy as lighting does make night and day different especially R7 need a lot more light than R5 C as it is slower lens

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  12 днів тому

      No I wish. It is photo technically. Timelapse video is sequence of photos link together into a video. With my upcoming tutorial - I will teach how someone can have less than 0.5 second or even faster internal to have video like timelapse. But technically it is timelapse. Video in 7K might need a new body unfortuntely. But again I have not tried those highend recorder yet so if someone find it out to do external ProRes RAW 8K let us know.

    It's a great video.
    It's really good that portability has been maximized and even the price has become cheaper.
    Good information and education!
    I have a few questions.
    1. Can I use RF-S 3.9mm in super356k mode on the R5c? If I use it, what is the difference between quality r7 and quality?
    2. Would there be a lot of heterogeneity if I edited videos of R7 and R5c together?
    3. How do you recommend it depending on the R7 and R5c usage except for the price?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  11 днів тому

      No you can not use it on R5C - as stated on the original review here: ua-cam.com/video/z-xrZSimbYo/v-deo.htmlsi=cETWVVne5Z9MF5LE / Yes it will as it is 2 resolution. You can use AI to match R7 to R5 C as you see I did here. I do use Timelapse video with R5 C as that is native 7K and the quality is crazy good and it is RAW / 2 different cameras - I still use my R5 C daily for professional works. R7 more for personal fun.

    very interesting indeed. It may worth to consider the R7VR setup. We have the problem with the R5C setup that it's very hard to shoot landscape VR and get everything sharp, especially objects like trees in the distance still look blurry in comparison to the visuals of a 2D video. Of course the FOV size and resolution is different, but even 8K without additional sharpening does not look good enough with the R5C 8K footage. It's much easier to shoot near objects and get some depth of field, so you cannnot focus in the distance anyway like in the music videos we do. But for landscape VR, e.g. relaxation content it's a different story. But nevertheless, it would be interesting to try out the R7VR setup just to see how close we get in terms of sharpness.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  12 днів тому

      Thank you! Even this setup will have the same issue to get everything sharp and focus. R7 is more for music video or doc with people - landscape actually R5 C is still a lot better if everything in focus in your concern.

After I use Canon VR utility and combine clips, LUT etc by editing in Shotcut and export the mp4 file. Then the final step of injecting Metadata for youtube VR - Does the Google Spatial Media Metadata Injector program help with this step? I do not see option for 180. Does the program still inject the metadata correctly?

    @hughhou can the R7 shoot 4k @60fps in VR?
    I wonder if the extra center sharpness is a bad thing for skin rendition.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  12 днів тому +1

      Yes it can. BUT, I won't recommand shoot 60fps on this setup. Here is my reasoning: 1. 60fps is true 4K without oversampling a 7K sensor. Meaning it will look 4K and in 2024 - that is no good enough. / 2. You can always just upframe using AI to 60fps. 60fps has processing issue on UA-cam VR so that is another problem / 3. to answer your center sharpness question - you always want sharper lens but not digital sharpen in post like other camera. If you pay attention in the comparison - CALF actually look sharper and seems to have more details than R7 but there is artifacts on the focus chart - meaning will overshapren the skin. This is not what you want. But sharper lens (physical lens) just mean more expensive glasses and you want that 100%!

    As someone who already has an R5C and loves VR and 360 stuff, I have been holding off on getting this lens as I wont do much work with it and I bought other things that I do use instead.
    I also was upset than Canon is charging a monthly fee to use the software that goes with that lens, that is just WRONG.
    I play with my Insta360 and Ambisonic Audio to get my fix (I have the Rode NT-SF1 and a Zoom F6)
    But... the quesiton is. If you already had an R5C would you buy the more expensive lens and take the loss in auto focus, larger files, more work to crop tripod, etc or go buy a R7 and this lens instead?

    I just bought the canon r7 with the dual fisheye lense. But after two days of testing I decided to send it back. But it is a tough decision. This is awesome tech. For me the video quality out of the canon r7 is just not enough. I is only useable after upscaling it with topaz labs, which takes forever. And the missing image stabilizer is a huge issue. You can not film handheld! A monopod or a gimbal is always necessary. This is really bad because the cameras small size is perfect for traveling. I will miss the oportunity to produce 144 degree 3D video - only after 2 days of testing. I really hope that the r7 II is coming very soon!

    About Sensor vs Resolution: Same reason I use a Canon M50 for a webcam and its better @ 1080P than my 4K Elgato webcam or Iris 4K webcam.
    Actually same as 20+ years ago when we had point & shoot cameras and competiton had them releasing new models with higher MP (megapixel) constantly and because they artifically icnreased resolution and didnt change the hardware (sensor) all it did was give us larger images at worse quality that would look about the same once zoomed out to look the same as the older lower MP models.

    Upscaling is all very well, but we've been here before so many times.Whilst upscaling 4K video to 8K may well be fine today, what about in the future when even higher resolution devices are out? Will 4K upscale to 12K as well as 8K does? Or 16K? I somewhat doubt it.
    IF the footage you are shooting has a limited shelf life, and will be of no interest a few years down the line, then sure - shoot at a lower resolution and upscale it. But if you are shooting something that may well have potential value long into the future, then what you save in $ and effort today, will prevent you from being able to fully monetize it in the future.
    I'm also extremely confused that you title this video "Canon R7 for VR180 with RF-S 3.9mm Dual Fisheye Lens", when the lens only has a 144 degree field of view, and you then go on to state that the lower field of view is an advantage because you won't capture the monopod stand.
    Is 144 the new 180? Seems like a big compromise to me.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  11 днів тому

      For 8K+ (16K) we will need to blackmagic upcoming camera - the professional options. Regrading FOV - 144 is a compromise as I stated there but it does also has advantage for people do not need full 180. We all know the disadvantage of lesser FOV - but I want to point out the advantage like higher PPD and hide the monopod. Again, more information for dissussion. So folks need that 180 degree - so 144 is not for them. But some folks don't really care and 144 is enough for them to trade off autofocus. I personally still use 180 degree.

    Come on, Hugh. Anyone who knows Canon and/or the r7 for video knows what 4k fine means. Many cameras oversample video these days. I knew this from day one on r7. Also, the Canon R5 4kHQ is downsampled from 8k, so there is a similar thing there. I don’t have a r5C so I don’t know if the 4kHQ is there or not, but all one needs to do is like. Just remember to enable high data rate to get 4kHQ to show in the menu or watch a few videos on the r5/r5c.
    Now I need to decide if I want to buy that lens for my r7. Oh, I even own the Topaz upres video software as I got it as part of a bundle. And I own Apple Vision Pro, too.
    I just need to determine how much additional stuff I need to make decent spatial video on my r7. If I had a $ amount, I could make a quick decision. Thanks.

      Lol, many people are SONY shooters here in the community. Honestly I only shoot with Professional camera - RED, Canon C series and SONY Venice. So I have no idea the world of oversampling until I try the 4K Fine mode. So that is the mistakes I made. An honest mistake as I always go for the 60fps lol. But yes. R7 Fine mode is well know. In fact, one of the R7 owner here in the community point out my mistakes on my original review!

    So what exactly happens if you put this on an R8 set in 4k aps-c crop? I'm guessing no autofocus and maybe not even aperture control. But the bigger dual fisheye ain't supported either but it seems to work and have aperture control. It's stupid they don't "support" these things on their other bodies. But if you stick these on the other bodies when you happen to already own those, it'd be super useful info to know what you get. There has to be a huge group wondering such things. Or even putting this one on R100 for time lapse stills. Etc etc. That'd be a useful video for every owner of R8, R10, R50, R100. What can you do with some effort with these dual fisheyes on those bodies. They'd sell more of the lenses. Like they added the R6 ii but not R8 to the other. Dumb.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  11 днів тому +1

      I will try to go to a Rental house and test all those. But it is software level not support on those body - it is more than just Lens in VR.

    • @StormandskydotCom
      @StormandskydotCom 9 днів тому

      So I kinda assume aperture and maybe even focus would function on this one like aperture works on 2.8 fisheye on R8. Then if you can handle alignment in a video editor you're good.
      It's hard to see much desire in 140 degrees either way. But maybe if you get aperture control on R8 it'd be worth seeing in 4k 60 crop.
      If one wants true to scale are you just including a 40 degree black circle and don't plan to look around in VR. Otherwise if the 140 fills the regular 16x9 4k or whatever things would always have to look big.
      Thanks for pointing out the whole up to 30p thing they mentioned was just an oversampled deal and 4k 60 works. It's really weird they didn't bother explaining that because no one wants to watch 30p in VR. Two weird aspects it kinda sucks they have. It'd have certainly been better just doing 180.
      Id just get the 2.8 and plop it on the R8 if I had a second R8 to keep the other one open. Ugh, still wishing for a decent option I guess. Why on Earth hasn't GoPro just redone what they had on the 3 with that 3d sync deal. Now bigger 8:7 sensor and max lens mods getting you at least 180 circles. They could plug this hole decently themselves pretty easy. Just kinda annoying that they had it on the 3.

    I remembered that you said 30fps and 4k just would not cut it in 2021. Now it is 2024. Love your channel but it is clearly another canon sledgehammer. I guess 144 FOV is nice for a 3D camera but not a VR camera.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  12 днів тому +1

      Yes 4K won't cut it in 2021 (and 8K won't cut it in 2024). But this is technically a 7K sensor camera. The ISP is not fast enough to get you 7K video (in favor of overheating resistent, battery life and not looking like a R5) but the oversampling can get you 8K if you want to use AI. But more importantly, UA-cam disagree with us and only give us 4K now on all VR180 video on browser. So... I was wrong back in 2021 (UA-cam / Google actually push 8K and back down as their users are not ready for it yet). For future proofing - get 16K HDR if you can for AVP. But the general public will stay at 4K VR180 SDR for a while especially now Apple and Meta are making a CHEAPER version of their headset!
