Someone already did but I can't remember if it was this one or the Olympus one. Someone made a rig like a camera rig to put on their shoulder and then put the phone in front of their face.
I had it, together with a6000. A6000 takes better photo and video hands down. What he forgot to mention is, when tethered to your phone, your phone internet is cut off. And whenever you receive a call, the tethering stops

@@thethirdman225 it should matter though considering the price of this and current dedicated astrophotography cameras that have the same form factor, cooled and uncooled. But the mid and low class ones already have better abilities for astrophotography than this and you also have to go through the hassle of getting to use it without a lens for a telescope. I think for the price it would not be wise to get it for astrophotography. For the same price and even less you get more value with a dedicated astrocam. Some astrocams also allow you to attach a few lens to use them as webcams for permanent all sky view for aurora for example. Granted that that curious camera is still way better than any phone for astrophotography and night photography though! :)
You've made a very nice video. I'm also a QX fan, started with the 100 in 2014 and wished for a changeable lens version which I bought in 2017. the best thing about this system is the inconspicuous way to take pictures. When you are looking at your smartphone, everybody around you knows that you are preoccupied with something and leaves you alone, not suspecting that you are maybe taking pictures of them. This is the ultimate street photography camera. A couple of things you missed out, touch to focus, can use A mount lenses with the LA EA4 adapter (from a cost viewpoint). I also have a 300mm f2.8 Minolta which I have used with it. I've also side loaded the Play Memories app to my Epson Moverio 35 (bought to fly my Mavic 2 Pro) so I see what the camera sees in the glasses and can control the camera ( like with the smartphone ) with the handset. Keep up the good work.
I was interested when it came out, but then I realized how much I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate using my phone as a camera. When family or friends asks me to take a photo on a phone I act like my arms were recently cut off.
@@snappiness on the day I realised that I can live without the latest techs, my preferences changing rapidly. I can do competitive wildlife with 2000's body, but comfortability becomes one of my top priority, especially for long day shooting.
I use its little brother QX10 as my point and shoot solution for the last however long it's been out. As long as you have autofocus (always with the QX10, but QX1 depends on the lens) and don't zoom, it can be used completely "blind". It only takes a bit of spatial awareness to point it exactly where you want it to, and you get used to keeping it straight (pretty easy to adjust because it's cylindrical). And you can't review the photos right off the bat, so it gives a kind of analog feeling of film cameras, with none of the hassle. I love getting fun angles with that thing. Zoom is handy too but it's hard to freehand with narrow field of view. It's also really easy to toss on a cheap smartphone gimbal compared to any other camera.
Funny enough this thing has mechanical shutter, but latest Lumix S9 don't, and I still can't wrap my head around the fact why Lumix released that camera in that state, considering horrible rolling shutter.
Its mostly to do with the thickness, the shutter unit itself is like 4mm in thickness, there some that are 3mm like the one in the Canon R8 but thats not a full shutter, its a hybrid shutter that uses both e-shutter and mechanical combined. S9 could easily done that, but I guess for some reasons Panasonic wanted a thinner camera???? To me it makes absolutely no sense because soon as you add the lens, all that advantage disappear, and its definitely not a cost cutting feature cause those shutter units are like 2 dollars LOL, thats some extreme level savings.
@@edvelfilms Sigma and both Sony models you mentioned are video centric cameras, Lumix S9 are not. I wouldn't have a problem if the readout speed of sensors was at around 3-4ms, like it's in Nikon Z9/Z8 or Sony A1. It sets a ridiculous trend of releases of technically incompetent cameras due to the probably some marketing bs. And idk what you meant by the second part of your comment.
@@snappiness i don't get the point of making price range for such things. Like literally, you can use SAME sensor as your OLD sony APS-C cameras, SAME logic board, SAME lens mount, SAME battery. And like you literally making a Sony A6000, but removed EVERYTHING and make it plastic and stupid. And the price is like NEW SONY A7S series, wtf???
I have owned the QX1 for several years. While I still use the camera occasionally, I find that the photos it produces can still compete with those from newer models. In my view, the only drawbacks are the shutter noise and the mobile phone connection.
I have a QX 30 and it is really fun. Small sensor, but a 24-720 equivalent zoom, fast burst (with a long delay afterwards) I used to mount it to a really tall tripod to record events. Then I would just sit down and control exposure and zoom on my second phone that I use as a remote control for these type of things. I could even walk around a bit without having to worry. For charging, I just use a power bank and use the phone holder for that.
My company used these things on a custom drone rig for taking high quality inspection pictures. Awesome little units to be honest- but now that they're not really being sold, we're being forced to find other options. Nothing but problems compared to what we were dealing with before lol. These things would have to take 2,000+ photos a day 7 days a week
As someone who's strapped an Oly Air to my bike handlebars - you're a real one for trying the chest mount! I moved to E-mount but kept the Air and am now definitely keeping an eye on the listings for QX1s. I've always seen this class of bodies as an insanely flexible option, great for high/low angle and even those with limited mobility. You can place it on a monopod with a ball head or even hand-hold and it'll work like a probe lens, selfie stick, slider, all sorts of stuff. Get down at ground-level POV without bending or easily frame group shots because you have a detached monitor. Poke it around corners to video your cat. Stick it inside your mailbox or birdfeeder. Tape it to your ceiling fan. It does the zany things you'd do with an action camera or the things you'd do with a smartphone but at "real camera" quality ... mostly.
Thanks for this video, Would you be able to show a comparison vs an iPhone camera with a telephoto lens? I'm thinking on either getting one or getting a mobile telephoto lens but I'm not sure
Thanks! I don't have any long telephotos for Sony E mount to test with. I would assume this would do a better job, but some of those high quality mobile lenses are getting much better. The experience would be a lot more simple with the mobile lens, as this camera takes a bit to start-up/set-up each time you're ready to turn on and pair with your phone.
I had the QX1 for a year. Image quality was fine (for the time) but my main gripe was connection issue. 2.4GHz wifi just wasn't good enough, and it was in constant network congestion everywhere I go. I hate that camera manufacturers are always YEARS behind network standards--5ghz became the norm in laptops and phones back in 2012-2013, yet the first camera to have 5ghz was I believe the GH5 in 2017, the first 5GHz Sony camera was the A7R4 / A7S3 in 2019-2020.
who needs 5GHz when you have literally 720p image transmission RIGHT behind your smartphone? It is fast enough to make it work. But the Sony's ability to crap everything - is the main issue with signal\data transfer operations.
This concept would be so cool with a open protocol standard that different companies can create hardware and software for, but that will probably not happen in our current world
I wish I had gotten one when they came out - this, and the Olympus air were just so innovative, and way ahead of its time. It’s also quite good how responsive the live view, especially on the little accessory screen
For bigger phones, just stick the chinese magnet rings onto the camera then the phone can pretty much hold on to it without using those small brackets.
Great job on the video! Thanks for making it. I am a big ol' nerd, so I dig this camera. So much so that I had already looked it up on ebay by the time you put the image of the listing onscreen. If this thing was under $250 I would have placed an order, but I fear that the novelty would wear off too quickly to warrant the $500+ price tag.
I like the thought of landscape or macro work with a super light camera on the tripod that can be at any orientation, while a phone screen in your hand shows the image - much easier than lying down in the mud to look at a screen on the camera. No focus peaking is an issue for that though (especially macro), and most modern cameras will also stream the screen to a phone these days...
I have an odd realization that the ILX-LR1 is sort of an spiritual successor to the QX1 even though its a flop. The ILX-LR1 is made for an different purpose that is installed on a drone, vehicle or other commercial/industrial applications but it seems to have inherited features from the QX1 from lacking a screen to having wifi connectivity to control it wireless-ly (unless you have it hooked up to ur PC, drone or in conjunction with the increased hardware controls, an HDMI display).
I have been fascinated with this thing since I discovered it a few months ago. I keep trying to think of a way I could make use of one but I can't really come up with anything (which is probably why they don't exist anymore)
Great video Snaps! I think we lost some of the innovation, though, sometimes the innovations are questionably functional. Love to see these ty pes of videos! Thanks for sharing!
I have the ATG QX-1 IR (modified by ATG for infrared) with ATG ACS adapter to ATG Canon EF1200/5.0 (modified 1 Stop faster) It sees 1,800mm @ F5.0. This mega images are sharper than today $7,000.00 Canon EOS-R1 which only has 24.2. My staff & I used this setup like this with ATG Robert Robotic (MRMC-modified from C to S). It maybe the biggest flop for beginners. But not for the professionals that can think outside of the box. When you are able to shoot in total darkness for photos & videos remotely, these will surely save our backs. Even the best professional photographers have never seen /nor use a ATG/Canon EF1200/5.6.
Fun fact: i took my QX-100 (the early versions of this concept from Sony) to a trip to Argentina, and the airline forbid the use of mobile devices through the entire flight (which was torture because there wasn't entertainment provided) so on my way back I kept my Sony phone attached to the QX-100 and set it on a tiny tripod for the food tray and i watched movies from there as if it was just a Camera, not a phone, and the staff bought it and leave me be. Also the photos where definitely better and hold up to this day.
Well James, you've just made me buy a QX10. For a split second the QX1 did cross my mind because I am a Sony APS-C shooter owning already a selection of lenses and using camera apps daily. Then, I looked at those lenses and confirmed your observation of it all being too cumbersome. Instead, I've picked up the QX10 on eBay for AUD170. Not too much money for me to risk, I guess, if it is in perfect condition as per seller's description. Comes from Japan - patience required. Not expecting miracles but if pictures from it are not worse than from my Pixel 4a, I'll be happy.
Sorry but the qx10 is the bottom of the basement when it comes to these cameras. It has an old a 1/2.3 inch sensor which is really outdated and your smart phone will be better. 170 aud seems very expensive and I’d pay that much for the qx100
@@wedeservedit I must have hit the bottom (of the basement), photographically speaking 🤣 I have an a6700 to hoist me back to the surface. As for the QX10, small is beautiful in my books. @@wedeservedit QX30? That's 399.95 quid no less on eBay. I'd be nearly tempted by a similar figure if it were in AUD. My QX10 just dispatched from Japan. It took them exactly 7 day to pack it and it will be on my porch in Aus in two. Interesting.
So glad I came across this video. I’ve had one of these since they came out and it’s had almost no use because I found it difficult to manage. I’m definitely going to look for one of those little “viewfinder/controllers” and then take it out for a spin.
I sold multiple drones back then with that camera attached to it, and used wifi extenders so you could have "medium range" FPV, it took great quality photos that you couldn't get from any camera designed for drones at that time
Honestly, would use an updated version of this with those remotes as side angle cams during weddings. The form factor is so sleek and being able to see a live view of the footage would help so much without a second shooter.
This reminds me of the Siemens S55 phone, introduced in late 2002 it was an early color screen mobile phone and seemingly also one of the first with a camera - but an external with viewfinder that was attached to the bottom port. My mum had it and of course it's perfect for taking UFO pictures, don't know if it even had live view but at least a real Xenon flash (that took a couple of seconds to charge the capacitor). I like such Sony products, they didn't fear to publish some weird quirky stuff, I myself have an A58 (also had a 33) and these aren't normal DSLR cameras but kind of a bridge between DSLR and DSLM, because AF sensors on the image sensor weren't good enough around 2010 they put a semi-translucent fixed mirror (you can only move it upwards without a lens to clean the sensor), a part of the light rays goes straight to the image sensor which also provides a permanent live view and a part is reflected to the AF sensors (instead of an optical viewfinder), we also got an A-mount camera because my grandpa had his old Minolta 7000 with some lenses. Or the SRS-LSR100/200 wireless TV speaker, it's a hearing aid for elderly people, for that purpose there are also some special wireless headphones available but due to the battery etc. they have these disadvantages and with normal speakers/soundbars nearby your TV you still have to turn up the volume quite much (and disturb neighbors), while that speaker brings it to the table next to your lounger/couch and they've also integrated a simplified universal remote control. And of course also some more like that which perfectly match to their mid-/late-2000s slogan "Like.no.other"
I've got a QX10 and got a lot of use out of it for outdoors stuff but lack of flash is rather limiting. I'd love to see new updated versions of these with a higher resolution and flash. I found it handy to use it detached for taking photos out of a moving car window while you have the screen safely inside the car.
love the b-roll and footage, love your voice and speaking skills, just perfectly well done for a talking video and its not easy for me to say that considering how many similar review/talking videos ive seen. honestly dont change anything
The sensor peaks at just over 10 stops of dynamic range. The use I had for it was with a Valoi Easy35 film digitizer. I liked the idea of a self contained wifi camera on that. In reality, the 10 stops wasn't enough for Portra😢 I swapped it out for a beat up Pentax K70. Why? Pentax does some pixel shift black magic where the grain structure is basically perfect on color film in addition to a couple more stops of DR. I tried Olympus hi-res mode, and always got at least some artifacts and issues, and funky looking film grain. I sold my q for more than I bought it for at least, lol.
I tired attaching this to a large drone a few years back with an ultra compact fisheye. Unfortunately the vibration even with a gimbal make the footage unusable.
Great video! I just think you are underselling that Sony sensor from the a5000/a6000. Paired with one of Sony's f/1.8 primes it can deliver great images! Of course, that would be much more challenging to achieve with this device instead of using one of those cameras.
The biggest problem of this idea is that most people don’t actually care to learn about taking photos. A friend of mine has a 1000usd in camera gear and just took some pictures in auto mode for a bit, got bored of having to upload them to his phone and just ended up taking all his photos with his iphone. He just wants to point and shoot, and most general purpose users probably want that. Interchangeable lenses on phones matches two mostly incompatible target groups
You should give this camera a try with the Monitor+ app. It works way better than the official Sony app for live control, and has way more features. It might breath more life into this old device.
I've got the Sony Qx30 and still actually use it quite a bit, especially with my EDC bag when I don't want to bring my DSLR or mirrorless setups. Also works great on a extendable painters' pole to bird's eye shots without a drone.
Could be useful to mount in weird places e.g. externally on my glider, and then use a remote to take high quality photos. They key difference over action cams is you're not stuck to only wide angle. for external aircraft use I'd like: - Aerodynamic as possible (which a lens shape helps with). - Solid mounting (I see it has a screw mount). - Remote control for video and photos.
Great review James! I was just writing an article about how to get the lightest camera & lens setup for bokeh panos. The new Sirui AF 75/1.2 or slightly older Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 amazing as light lenses, but combining it with an E-mount body there is so much to choose from. I thought this QX1 would be the lightest (it kind of is), but the NEX C3 is only a couple of grams more and has its own screen, so I don't think I will try to find one of these.. ok I might keep my eye open for one... Hope you're well mate and keep up the great reviews :)
Do u think smartphone should have an interchangeable lens system build around 1"/mft sensor? Smartphone cameras have already hit the ceiling further improvements can't b possible without a better and bigger lenses. Computational photography has its limit and tbh i hate it, the way they processed the images so it would be awesome to see that implementation.
Xiaomi showed a concept phone that did that a couple years ago (12S ultra concept), but it didn't come to market. The concept was designed to use leica M lenses with an adapter, so you ended up with a very big system that also had no great lenses for the small sensor. It would have made a lot more sense if they got some of the Chinese lens makers (ttartisan, 7artisans, etc) on board to design lenses optimised for that sensor and that made use of the much shorter flange distance. Some f/1.4 lenses for the 1" sensor would be still very tiny and cheap, but get you f/4 equivalence in full frame terms at a variety of focal lengths - way better than anything you can build into a smartphone
I don't. I don't think it fits with the way smartphones are used and for how long they are kept. In real terms it would require a new mount and bespoke lensing. No manufacturer would put in writing that the system would be supported for a decade or more, and it so follows that no consumer would bet on it not being discontinued after one or two model years. Then even surmounting all of that, bad form factor, less pocketability, and loss of dust/water proofing due to mount would likely kill it in terms of sales and in the pockets of the nation too. You want an ILC, buy an ILC.
It's kinda too much, there is still plenty of space for innovation, like 2 cameras that work as one maby, or something else, they still need to be small and versatile, so there not much space for a good grip
@@POVwithRC You can weather seal a phone with a lens mount, look at xiaomi's concept, and it'll still be pocketable - you just take the lens off the phone first. You'd only see this on flagship phones so it's never going to make a full system, but it also wouldn't cost that much to sell the phone as a bundle with a couple of primes.
Little trick for "quicker mounting" is to use a Magsafe Ring. I just turn on my QX1, snap it into place using the Magsafe rings and not worry about the clipping mounts. Just make sure to buy good quality ones to ensure sturdy mounting strength :)
Owner of the QX1, the delay on what you see on your phones screen and no focus peaking really gets to you in the long run. Other than these two gripes I have, I happy with this gadget
I was considering QX1 at that time but for me it was way too expensive. Still have the QX10 i bought. Haven't used it in quite some time, but I was really happy with it. Whenever i was in trips i was attaching it to a selfie stick or a mini tripod for easy remote group photos or interesting shots.
I lowkey see some use for this form factor, if the QX1 had a Clean HDMI out and dummy battery compatibility. This would be a great streaming camera, having a very small footprint
I think the real problem with this whole category is that the main advantage of smartphone cameras isn't that they're wirelessly connected--that's a secondary convenience. It's that you're already carrying them around, even if you're not a photography enthusiast. The camera that gets used is the one you have on you. If you need to carry this extra accessory, that advantage disappears, and the thing is more physically awkward than a self-contained camera with a viewfinder, rather than less.
3:00 Imagine a new version with USB-C allowing you to use the phone's computational photography, access focus peeking/peaking, zebra, etc That was what i was hoping from the Sony Xperia Pro but it more acted like an external monitor to your camera instead of properly working in conjunction with the camera.
Just received my QX10 today. I'm chuffed. Took a few test photos and they look good enough for me. Low light is not the strength, naturally. One warning: don't get put off by soft looking images viewed directly from the camera even if you set the preview to "original" in the IEM. Once fetched to you devise they look waaaaay better.
As a car filmaker this would be an insane formfactor if it recorded 4k 60fps 10bit log. All i would need was a small pixel screen for settings and an hdmi out and i would be set.
I still have my QX1 and occasionally get it out for a half day of getting it working and reminding why it lives at the bottom of my equipment box. The orinal app - Sony Memories Online was bad and the subsequent Edge Imaging isnt much better. If the NFC had just "worked" - connected quickly and reliably first time and stayed connected, it would have been great. But the faff of getting it set up to take a shot was nowhere near enough to offset the slight additional baggage the Alpha 7 body represented.
I've still got mine, and agree with your review. It's a quirky, but creative "solution looking for a problem," as the saying goes. You've convinced me to dust it off, charge up the two batts, and give it another chance - now with my S24 Ultra - thx!...
I love taking photos on my Canon 40d (2007) but the camera is showing it's age now. The camera can take good photos, in lighting that enables a phone to take a photo just as good lol Would absolutely love to have one of those
Dude, I'm buying one right now. I go backpacking from time to time and I don't love having to take a full sized camera for real photography so this is literally perfect
Something like this would be cool for when I'm out at the range shooting long distance. I have tried a few spotting scopes and I typically hate how bad the FOV typically is even on supposedly good lenses. They gather more light, but the FOV issue is enormous. The adapters for attaching a camera is also a hassle. I have an A6000 with the pancake kit lens and the 55-210mm lens. The 210mm lens on this might be useful mounted on a tripod. If it can be powered by a connected power bank it'd be pretty sweet. Is it able be powered by the USB port while in use? Another alternative that I'm looking at is the Nikon P1000 with it's 3000mm of zoom. Sure, it needs power but I don't have an issue bringing a 10,000 mAh power bank with me. Having it mounted to a fixed tripod and being able to look down at my cellphone would also be a huge bonus, recording video/still photos too.
I had the smaller version of this with a built in lense. It was really pretty good for its time! But it was heavily crippled by terrible battery life, and a phone app that was anything but reliable or stable. It was a little too early, while also being too late to the game? It would make an epic webcam though, if it had that functionality, which it does not.. So many missed opportunities.
I used to have it, along with QX10. The biggest downside for me was a poor video codec. If it made better quality video, I'd probably be still using it today. For stills it was really good!
Pairing has gone smoothly for me - once it's setup it's pretty fast. But it's always that extra step to do instead of just turning on a camera and using it.
Actually, Olympus made a way better job at future proofing their Air A01 than Sony did with the QX1: They made it opensource. While the original app is long gone you can find a lot of opensource apps that support it. And even some more whacky things like diy open-hardware displays to make it a full camera. Speaking of this, I have just found how I'll use my Spotify Car Thing. Saving two devices from the e-waste bin in one go.
I always look forward to your videos. You have such a calming demeanor and the topics and presentation are so interesting. I really appreciate your work.
Anything that took those NP-FW50 batteries was the worst. I had an A7R at that time, and to shoot a full wedding day I sometimes would go through 10 batteries while shooting. I'm glad they made the newer version of their batteries way more efficient.
I've got that A7R too and I hate it! Max 150 shots on a battery. Bought a A7C with the new battery and it's night and day! Goes for a whole days with over 1000 shots! I've got probably 10-12 of those FW-50:s for all my now unused Nexes, 5xxx, 6xxx and A7 first gen. Didn't buy any second generations due to the battery.
Totally agree and i always wanted a full frame version of one. Kudos for making a video about an unsuccessful but very neat Sony camera line that could have been.
Have a QX-100 that’s fun to use at times, have also used it in the past for night photos. The remote control works great especially if you also use a long pole to create drone like shots. Lack of RAW support in the Qx-10 and 100 was always a downside
I have this camera. It’s fun to use because you could have it anywhere and use iPhone iPad someplace else. Plus it accommodates pretty much any lens with adapter
Had qx1 for years didn't knowv the remote accessory supported it! Stopped using it mainly because of the time it took to connect it to the app and have it going. I had some very good trips with it i felt it was better than lugging around a full sized camera.
The problem is there is not much manual control from Imaging Edge Mobile. I tried to use mine as camera attached to telescope. Theoretically perfect form factor and use case. You could even use it with a tablet. But the controls are too simple for that purpose. It worked kind of great with Xperia Z Ultra, there was even special plastic case for the phone to attach this seriers of cameras without using the clamp.

Nope, tried it. The controls in Imaging Edge Mobile are too simple.
I've never seen chest cam footage where the bars are out of focus 😅
Sony was always at the forefront of neat miniaturization.
I had that wrist remote. And it was dope. Worked like a charm for its action camera pal.
I was interested when it came out, but then I realized how much I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate using my phone as a camera. When family or friends asks me to take a photo on a phone I act like my arms were recently cut off.
Yeah I'm not a hater of smartphone photography for others (some people do awesome with it), but it's not for me personally
@@snappiness on the day I realised that I can live without the latest techs, my preferences changing rapidly. I can do competitive wildlife with 2000's body, but comfortability becomes one of my top priority, especially for long day shooting.
I was interested on it, until I remember how slow Imaging Edge image taking is.
Put the QX on the top of an umbrella to snap in rain.
Does it have a hot shoe? Maybe you can mount an external OVF
@@snappy8k nope, because guess what? BECAUSE IT'S A SONY!
Ok, that’s literally point and shoot haha
Funny enough this thing has mechanical shutter, but latest Lumix S9 don't, and I still can't wrap my head around the fact why Lumix released that camera in that state, considering horrible rolling shutter.
haha!
Sigma fp, Sony ZV E10 or the EV10II neither have mechanical shutter.
Get over it. This little thing is APS-C, and the Sigma or Lumix are FF.
@@SMGJohn couldn't find info but this thing also probably has hybrid shutter, which is miles better than no mech shutter at all
@@edvelfilms Sigma and both Sony models you mentioned are video centric cameras, Lumix S9 are not.
Interesting but you could get a A6300 w/kit lens for those prices. It may even be more compact.
Yeah definitely would be a better buy. This is more of a fun toy and not very practical (especially at the price)
And the price is like NEW SONY A7S series, wtf???
a6300 with the 18-105 f4 combo is still undefeated to this day 😁
I have owned the QX1 for several years.
It does the zany things you'd do with an action camera or the things you'd do with a smartphone but at "real camera" quality ... mostly.
just use a real action cameras, they much more durable, small, cheap and you can get nice app to work with. QX1 must be dead, like Sony RX0.
The experience would be a lot more simple with the mobile lens, as this camera takes a bit to start-up/set-up each time you're ready to turn on and pair with your phone.
i got this camera for $338 used on ebay in 2021. It is a very unique and capable camera. something you would get as collectable over everyday use.
Yeah, and can be beaten by 2nd hand Sony A5100, so, so innovative
The only thing , that I really really wish this thing had was a microphone input so I can get great audio quality
Would be great for concert photos
@@unbroken1010 nope, just because it's a Sony :D. Wanna better output - buy newer version of our product for $9999.99, and get a free Pen!
I have the ATG QX-1 IR (modified by ATG for infrared) with ATG ACS adapter to ATG Canon EF1200/5.0 (modified 1 Stop faster)
It sees 1,800mm @ F5.0.
4:22 Disney got their new robot companion for the next Star Wars drivel right there!
@@wedeservedit
I must have hit the bottom (of the basement), photographically speaking 🤣 I have an a6700 to hoist me back to the surface. As for the QX10, small is beautiful in my books. This is why I haven't gone full frame with my main camera. QX10 is just a fun project. Also more economical than a phone with a zoom lens by a factor of 10.
By the way, I appreciate geately your attending to comments posted.
@@tadc no problem. Sorry didn’t mean to put a dampner on things. Have a look at the qx100 if you can. This has a 1 inch sensor (but unfortunately can’t shoot raw). All the best with the new camera. No doubt it’s fun to use though! Qx30 same sensor and 30x zoom btw!
@@wedeservedit
QX30? That's 399.95 quid no less on eBay. I'd be nearly tempted by a similar figure if it were in AUD. My QX10 just dispatched from Japan. It took them exactly 7 day to pack it and it will be on my porch in Aus in two. Interesting.
So glad I came across this video. I’ve had one of these since they came out and it’s had almost no use because I found it difficult to manage. I’m definitely going to look for one of those little “viewfinder/controllers” and then take it out for a spin.
2:20 this tripped me out for a moment, because i have the exact same phone and case lol
I sold multiple drones back then with that camera attached to it, and used wifi extenders so you could have "medium range" FPV, it took great quality photos that you couldn't get from any camera designed for drones at that time
I'm freaking out. That see-through Ricoh Cam was my first camera ever!!! man the memories...
And of course also some more like that which perfectly match to their mid-/late-2000s slogan "Like.no.other"
Trust me if the Updated version of this thing comes, at an affordable price than ZV E10 or equivalent, this would be instant hit among vloggers.
Ikr, it won't hurt the ZV-E10 sales as you need the smartphone to use it.
Honestly that would be amazing for close up street photography
I'm just as interested in that transparent toy camera you took pictures of as I am in the QX1.
I just found that transparent camera: Ricoh Bandai My Crystal. Holy expensive, Batman!
I tired attaching this to a large drone a few years back with an ultra compact fisheye. Unfortunately the vibration even with a gimbal make the footage unusable.
you must use Sony E 16mm AF lens and put this on a gimbal, not just a drone itself
Slap a wide angle, go F8 at 1/250 and just be the most invisible street snapper in existence (without attaching it the phone).
Good old days when engineers did some crazy stuff just because they could.
Thanks, I will!
They key difference over action cams is you're not stuck to only wide angle. for external aircraft use I'd like:
- Aerodynamic as possible (which a lens shape helps with).
- Solid mounting (I see it has a screw mount).
- Remote control for video and photos.
better to use just a 2nd hand gopro, much more reliable and useful option
Great review James! I was just writing an article about how to get the lightest camera & lens setup for bokeh panos. The new Sirui AF 75/1.2 or slightly older Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 amazing as light lenses, but combining it with an E-mount body there is so much to choose from. I thought this QX1 would be the lightest (it kind of is), but the NEX C3 is only a couple of grams more and has its own screen, so I don't think I will try to find one of these.. ok I might keep my eye open for one... Hope you're well mate and keep up the great reviews :)
The NEX C3 makes more sense to me - way cheaper, screen, grip to actually hold comfortably. I look forward to hearing about that setup!
great video, i still have my QX100 and i didnt know this with the RM-LVR remote thing, so i hope i get this on ebay soon
A micro four thirds version is being released
That's a great idea!
Owner of the QX1, the delay on what you see on your phones screen and no focus peaking really gets to you in the long run. Other than these two gripes I have, I happy with this gadget
Honestly, I think it's an attractive enough format to add the latest Wifi7 or any other technology these days. Like Samsung Galaxy NX.
I would love to buy such thing with modern sensor like in ZV-E1
in many cases camera buttons and screen are useless.
Having the app on the Google glass, that fancy screen sungluss, or apple vision pro and taking photos moving it and clicking the shutter
'Openmemories-tweak' has discovered the internal settings/keys which produce clean HDMI on many Sony cameras of this generation.
Keyword is "remote". Btw the small F2.8 Sigma APS-C fite perfect, AF too.
3:00 Imagine a new version with USB-C allowing you to use the phone's computational photography, access focus peeking/peaking, zebra, etc
That was what i was hoping from the Sony Xperia Pro but it more acted like an external monitor to your camera instead of properly working in conjunction with the camera.
Alt pocket setup: NEX 5 + pancake lens + SD card-to-phone adapter.
The camera can take good photos, in lighting that enables a phone to take a photo just as good lol
Would absolutely love to have one of those
Dude, I'm buying one right now. I go backpacking from time to time and I don't love having to take a full sized camera for real photography so this is literally perfect
i have used QX10,QX100 and QX30...but it is hard to find this QX1 now at a local shop..and I am still searching for this one..😅
This vid gets close to my dream - an EVF mounted like an eyepiece kinda deal.
I didnt know this existed! I have an A6100 and love it, I recently got into the Dispo lens photography. this would be perfect for a dispo lens.
I wish it had hot shoe as opposed to built in flash just so you can trigger it elsewhere as opposed to camera axis
i want ZV-E10 II version of this that i can just snug it anywhere for some really weird angle in movies
Sony has also made a usb tethered version of this for drones called umc r10c
Could use this as a viewfinder on set VERY quickly. Sync to a tablet, slap a similar lens on there, etc.
Wish I could take advantage of the computational photography stuff from my iPhone but just attach a big sensor, lens and flash.
Used to sell these new at retail = always found the pairing very dicey but even then I thought it was such a fascinating product
Pairing has gone smoothly for me - once it's setup it's pretty fast. But it's always that extra step to do instead of just turning on a camera and using it.
The images look great! What a unique design, I don't know how I feel about it but I do know I want to play with one using the action camera remote.
I have the Spotify Car Thing too. so bad to see em drop support. what are u going to do with it?
I always look forward to your videos. You have such a calming demeanor and the topics and presentation are so interesting. I really appreciate your work.
Well thanks!
I had one of these, it was quite cool, but I did miss a rear screen
Kudos for making a video about an unsuccessful but very neat Sony camera line that could have been.
it is already been on public, it called ILX-LR1
This thing with a modern 26mpxs bsi CMOS would be crazy
What other projects are going on trying to integrate the smartphone screen as a sensor viewer similar to this?
Fun fact: the QX-1 can be controlled from some other Sony devices, including Handycam’s like the AX-53, you get the live view on the camcorder screen.
