    Last week I was searching for UA-cam videos on digitizing photos. I’m guessing my search last week is why your video popped up in my feed today and I’m very glad it did. I recently read Swedish Death Cleaning (sounds kinda morbid but it wasn’t) and it got me thinking that one of the most daunting tasks of cleaning out my mother’s place and then my father’s place were boxes of photos. Add in the giant box of photos my in-laws had and all I can say is OMG!!! Last week I ordered an Epson flat scanner from Amazon that is due to arrive today but after watching your very thorough review, the flat scanner will be going back. I placed an order for this scanner a few minutes ago and now I’m looking forward to not only scanning all the photos but also getting them all organized and shared with family and friends. At 70 years old I’m starting to think about making it as easy as possible for my daughter to go through stuff once I pass on in maybe 20-30 yrs. 😊. My father lived to be 98 so I figure I have a good shot! 😂. Won’t just be photos I’ll be digitizing but lots of documents too. Thanks for posting this video. Looking forward to watching your videos on using Photoshop. I had the program many years ago but never really utilized it. Now that I’m retired I’m thinking it will be fun to learn how to really delve into the program. Thanks again!

    I am just about to open the box for my new Epson Fastfoto FF 680 W Scanner. I have watched this scanner for about two years and have been using a flatbed scanner. But I finally realized that the task was overwhelming and too time consuming for the flatbed approach.
    I am so pleased that I located your tutorial. It was very informative and you provided so much great direction and examples. Thank you

    I'm just starting to look at scanners vs. using a company to do it...and you've almost sold me! The fact that it will scan the BACKS of photos if something is written on them is VERY appealing to me! Now they're almost $600...but still probably cheaper than getting boxes and boxes of photos sent in. Thank you!

    I have been putting it off for years, lots of family photos after my grand parents, and my family is not happy waiting for them, but it's such a mountain of work to do with a flat be scanner. So I will try to get hold of this scanner to do this. I didn't know this scanner existed until today, which is when I looked for reviews. Glad it's good enough for such a job. Thank you.

    Great review - I'm just unpacking mine at the minute because of it !! Just in case you can't remember, the buildings in the pictures that you were scanning are the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and the Transport Museum in Glasgow. The Transport Museum has now moved down to a purpose built building on the North bank of the River Clyde.

    I’ve literally got five of the large Rubbermaid totes FULL of photos stored away in our guest room. A podcast I listen to made mention of the Epson Fastfoto, but I wanted to learn more than the Amazon product description could provide - so I took to UA-cam, where I found this video review. Thanks so much for the excellent information and very useful review. I am now searching for the best price for this FF 680 W and will start my photo digitization process soon. This was very helpful.

    Hi Colin, I have a Canon MP990, it is a printer, copier, scanner (Photos, Documents, and an attachment that lets me scan slides and film strips). It also has a great quality to the scans and copies and print outs. I have had it for over a decade and still works pretty well. The software has a cleaning and deep cleaning part to it, and when scanning documents I have a choice of JPG or PDF. I do plan to install the software on my newer laptop, and then scan away. I have so many pictures, and negatives from years ago, and when I had a film DSR camera for a photography class I took quite a few years ago. Like over 5 years ago. I do like your idea of scanning documents, which I eventually plan to do. Great scanner though.

    I needed this last year at this time. January through May I scanned over 7,000 photos, mostly very, very old ones I rescued from a flood at my mom's house. I still might look into this scanner as I have another 50 years of photos to scan. Our family loves to take photos. FYI even found some 3' X 5" black and while glass negatives dating back to the late 1930's or early 40's . How's that for a find?

      That is great... I'm guessing the time frame "January through May" (5 months) means you were using a flatbed scanner? A ton of work scanning one at a time! Kudos for making all that effort. I like the idea of making notes and comments and saving for later generations.
      I'm looking at maybe 5,000+ photos and thinking I can't spend 5+ months doing this... is there a faster way?!? Looks like this is it! Plus I am excited this can capture the back side if there are notes or comments!

    • @picsbydebs
      @picsbydebs 3 роки тому

      @@johnbrown4200 I love this scanner. It captures the back side with notes or whatever is on the back. I love that it even does documents. I use it all the time. One note: If the photo is thick then you have to use a flatbed scanner. Thicker photos won't scan through this scanner. Plus it's limited to certain sizes. Very large photos have to be done on scanners that can scan large photos. BUT I was able to push through so many photos in such a short time it made my life much better. I highly recommend this scanner.

      But if u get a good one post on fb and advertise to ppl you’ll digitalize their photos’ should be able to knock one persons out in a week or weekend after work etc
      Then buy like a 128gb flash drive and charge them for the flash drive and say like 10 cents a photo which is very cheap! And tel them they will have to go n and later name the files etc’ if it’s as fast as they say people will easily pay 10 cents a photo as they know they will never do it and how much time they think it takes with a flat bed scanner’ wink wink they don’t know u have a good one’

    Yep - it's a lifesaver... I have a 500W and I've put everything through it.. Photos I don't have negatives for, all kinds of documents, records, tax papers, business cards and so on. We are doing a lot of downsizing - going through years and years worth of stuff. We've found a lot of those PhotoMat envelopes. So my little 500W has been getting a workout.
    As an aside... ALL my negatives (and I have one of those plastic tote boxes full of them - 35mm to 4 X 5) have been scanned. I have a couple Epson flatbeds, and both are capable of scanning negs and slides. All have been scanned @ 4800 dpi - you can actually see the grain in the film! All our photos are stored on 2 external HDs and a 3rd internal drive on my main PS machine. I have to tell you.. It took several months to scan all those negatives! 😜

      @arttaylor5935 2 роки тому

      Good luck finding any such machine. The closest things available for prints and negs are the Epson V-800 & V-850, but they''re both flatbeds. They can do multiple slides or multiple negatives in batches, as well as prints up just over letter size, but they're not very fast for each individual slide or negative. A digital camera with a sensor at least 24 megapixels in size, a 1:1 macro lens, a film holder for each size slide/negative you have, a copy stand or tripod to hold the camera stationary and parallel to the film, an LED light panel with a CRI of 95 or higher to backlight film, a pair of LED lights to give even lighting for prints and other documents, will give you the speed you seek with better quality digital images.

      No, it doesn't scan negatives or slides. The 1200 spi is guessing at the missing pixels it adds, so resizing later isn't going to gain any quality. Scanning at 1200 spi will also increase the time required.

    Great video & a fantastic piece of kit, would consider buying one but would have limited use after you’d gone through your collection. Renting one would be the way to go.. but a great machine all the same 👍

    That's a pretty crazy price, it will make using a flatbed scanner which I paid 0 for more paletable. It does cut photos layed side by side into individual pictures. Its the Epson sx430w which is ancient.

    Based on watching your review several times I have bought the Epson FastFoto, and so far it works just as you described. So thanks for that. Only issue was the included Software Disc would not load; however, was able to easily download the setup software from the Epson web site. Like you I have several thousands of photos to scan, so we'll see how we go.

    Thanks for the video. I have this item. LOVE it. I use it all the time for documents to digitize my files. I used to have 5 inches of papers to file CONSTANTLY, but now I have NOTHING!! All digitized!! Tax Documents organized in Dropbox by year and subdivided by category. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I purchased the scanner for photos and have yet to dive into that side of it because I can't figure out how to best name the people in the photos. I understand how you did it in the video, but is there a good way to ID people?

    I have acquired many old photos that I need to scan, [the reason for watching you video] Many of them were permanently mounted in paper frames that are hinged with a cover for standing vertically. These go back to the 1920's. will the scanner allow for the extra thickness?

    12:34 “this is not what we’re using for highest-quality museum art … so you gotta set your expectations there”
    Sure, for €100 or €200. But for €500 I’d absolutely expect high-quality. 😐

    • @ncr101
      @ncr101 5 років тому +5

      And expect higher resolution too. 1200 interpolated is not a great feature so it's really only a 600 dpi scanner. And if I'm going to scan something 2 inches or small, I want 2400 or better. I think the price is buying scan speed, not scan quality.

    • @ClintJohnsonWriter
      @ClintJohnsonWriter 5 років тому

      You start getting good-quality at the €1000 mark. Expecting high-quality for only €500 is like expecting Three-Star Michelin food at a chain restaurant. Those €100 scanners are fast food joints and street vendors.

    • @Halbmond
      @Halbmond 5 років тому +2

      @@ClintJohnsonWriter I’d rather use my system camera and invest more time in the editing than spend so much money on a device whose image quality is still subpar. Especially considering that you can get really good film scanners for €500, which is why I would have expected this to be a really good photo scanner.

    • @ClintJohnsonWriter
      @ClintJohnsonWriter 5 років тому +2

      @@Halbmond That means you probably (but not necessarily) have hundreds or low thousands of high-quality prints and negatives you place a great deal of individual value in and that you may want to print at larger sizes, not several thousand snaps that have a cumulative value when viewed and shared digitally. It is not really possible for you to accommodate the second scenario (for which the FastFoto is unequalled) unless you can ingest a family snapshot every 3-5 seconds? A good scanner like the Epson V800 is only about €50 more, but it is NOT a good scanner if you have 2500 prints that you just want to digitize at 600 dpi. It is even a worse option here in Canada where the FastFoto is $700 and the V800 is $1100.
