Information Anarchy: A Survival Guide for the Misinformation Age - SANS CTI Summit 2018

  • We are surrounded by information - data on every topic, from any angle, in every shape and size. All of this data should provide us
with more understanding and insight than ever before. But there is just one problem. The information isn’t always accurate. We are living in the misinformation age. How can threat intelligence analysts survive in an age of information anarchy? We need
information to form the basis of our analysis, but how can we pick out the truth from the overwhelming piles of data and ensure that our analysis is sound? This talk will discuss how we got to the state we are in, and how to identify accurate information versus intentional misinformation and misinformation born of confusion.
Finally, we’ll look at some steps we as a community can take to
eliminate unintentional misinformation and get to ground truth sooner, including ways to calculate mean time to accurate information on Twitter and how to identify IOC-outliers that require more scrutiny.
Speaker Bio: Rebekah Brown (@PDXbek), Threat Intelligence Lead, Rapid7; Summit Advisor, SANS Institute
Rebekah Brown is a former National Security Agency network warfare analyst, U.S. Cyber Command training and exercise lead, and Marine Corps crypto-linguist. She has helped develop threat intelligence programs at the federal, state, and local levels as well as in the private sector at a Fortune 500 company. Rebekah currently leads threat intelligence at Rapid7. She has an associate
degree in Mandarin, a B.A. in International Relations, and is
wrapping up a M.A in homeland security with a cybersecurity
    focus.

The biggest big business in America is not steel, automobiles, or television. It is the manufacture, refinement and distribution of anxiety. - Eric Sevareid
The bigger the information media, the less courage and freedom they follow. Bigness means weakness.
It must be a truly miserable existence to work inside a dying “news” operation that considers its overarching job to be creating and maintaining a false reality for an ever-diminishing audience.

Except that they have their hands in many pies, (eg Viacom) and simply move among platforms.
Smaller media can be just as much under the thumb. Easier to control the little guy. Local papers...
The biggest business is making sure we spend all our time watching this crap instead of feeding the person next to us.

Spot on. Furthermore, she fails to cite any of the bibliographical information on the last slide throughout the bulk of the presentation and pawns off many of these uncited slides as originating in her own mind.
Also, she mentions that what she practices is a "science" even though she is clearly in a systems management field. Whether or not she truly believes this or is being intentionally misleading is unclear.
There are clearly some useful techniques for filtering out low quality information and misinformation at the individual level in the presentation, however, the presenter should have been far more thorough and professional about citing her research.

I understand some misinformation is amateurish, but with professional sources of disinformation and lobbyists with publicists, You don't have anything better then we look for something written by someone with a college education and who doesn't display obvious cognitive bias? Maybe we should start looking with the understanding that we live in a landscape of professional data, opinion and information manipulation. There is a legitimate reason to employ those war veterans who have the instinct to know when they are at risk. For an enemy or situation to be dangerous, there's already intent involved, either by another agency or your own vulnerability, and "first know your Self", holistically, and "to your own self be true", which is a roundabout way of describing how we are programmed by our environment. I dismiss out of hand anything emotive that fails to cite an original source. I don't particularly care about the source as long as the facts stack up and can be verified independently - which is what I'm hunting for when I snap to the source. If I'm active on a topic, facts which are problematic are reported back to the narrator for review. If the narrator fails to review and attempts to derail the conversation with sophistry, I know I can rest assured that I'm looking at an active propaganda or disinformation campaign. So I can afford to disregard this information or take appropriate action if I feel it's required.
Again, the source doesn't matter to me. It's all about the underlying facts or, failing that, about the agenda and whether that agenda is actionable (in terms of countermeasures) because the disinformation game is a cult activity which has no borders and respects no national jurisdiction and this is how it is so effective at undermining social cohesion on the national scale (e.g. the "Domino Effect" - but the Nazis had been at this years before, the Eugenists before them and it's the going theme in religious, political and "therapy" cults of all stripes).
So, when it comes to propaganda, the key question always revolves around agenda. Moreover, there's no point dropping the bottom out of one of these propaganda campaigns if something else is just going to take it's place. There is also the question of it's impact on positional analysis of the broader Goban of the global social network. Is it just a stone randomly tossed on the Goban by a clueless player? Is it a devious sacrifice? Is it a Tesugi? Is it a Ko? Is it Shicho? Is there a "Crane's Nest" in play? And, if it's even worth pursuing (and much of the nonsense from western sources isn't worth the time of day because the dynamics of the broader social Goban are lost on most of us) then the question is how to nail the basis for the agenda, not just for the particular snippet of information which may be only one of hundreds or thousands of diverse items of disinformation; i.e so in nailing one, another takes it's place. But, if you can nail the basis of the agenda, then they're sunk - and, in practice, the kind of psychopaths that run these campaigns know it which is why they nearly always try to derail dialogue with personal attacks when things take a turn down this road.
It's also, very much, not about being right so much as being aware of the plays being made on the broader Goban of the social network and forming an understanding of how these plays interact to produce a collective outcome in terms of consequences and flow-on collateral impact. So long as you fail to up your game at this level, you'll always be playing catch-up after a campaign has recruited and indoctrinated sleeper agents; often after the sleepers have been activated when it is already too late to act.

@@bleekzaXXX The presenter's whole job in cybersec / infosec is to act as a manager for a human filtration system of information and movements that threaten the status quo.
All the books you've listed in your OP will probably end up in the banned books / ideas bin someday... a process the presenter will surely be more than willing to do under the pretext of "it's muh jerb". 🤷‍♂️
