I’m so glad that you enjoyed this. Built to spill and modest mouse are my two adolescent favorites. Their music is so beautiful and touching to me. Also I would say both BTS and Modest mouse are especially worth exploring further for you because of their overlap with early post hardcore music. I hope to see you listen to more of their music
Yes! Built to Spill are excellent and if you like this song you cannot go wrong with anything from the albums "Perfect from Now On" and "Keep it Like a Secret". You are absolutely right that BTS were a huge influence on Indie bands of the time. A band born and bred on classic rock guitar hero's but with the 90's ideology/ethos of looseness and self reflrection. Doug Martsch is the dude behind it all... great guitarist, lyricist, songwriter (and basketball player).
Doug is a National Treasure that so many knows nothing about. Never intending to be a band to last for years and years but built to spill as he would describe. His music, lyric and riff writing is iconic. So many more great tracks (and covers… I hear you, Cortez the Killer. Goin’ Against Your Mind Untrustable So When I’m Blind
Quintessential 90s indie rock. Always makes me want to go back to that era and jam other bands like Pavement, Archers of Loaf, Dinosaur Jr., Modest Mouse, etc.
Their influence is pretty huge but also not talked about much. I read in a Rolling Stone magazine interiew blip back when those existed that Doug was trying to emulate Siamese Dream with this album.
Well, he surpassed siamese dream with perfect from now on. Not even close. And siamese dream is an great album. That's how highly I think of perfect from now on
So glad you revisited Built To Spill and that you liked this song. It's a really good representation of the highs Built to Spill and this album in particular can get to in terms of creativity and songwriting. Perfect From Now On is truly essential 90s Indie rock and imo essential guitar based rock music. Definitely give it a listen in it's entirety, it's such a wonderfully cohesive project, musically and thematically.
Finally! The reaction community has completely ignored BTS. They give me such joy. I have no doubt BTS influenced many bands. They broke a lot of rules about how songs are created. If you want a solo, check out their cover of Cortez the Killer, probably my favorite outside of Gilmour's Comfortably Numb. It's completely ridiculous. And I mean 1000 x ridiculous.
To be fair, this is the second time I've had them on the channel but I could certainly do with having more of 'em. ua-cam.com/video/clprofOxBL4/v-deo.html
My introduction to this song was actually through hip hop, the song Ballad Of Worms by Cage sampled it, I would highly recommend it, the use of I Would Hurt A Fly in conjunction with the songs lyrics deliver a very bleak and depressing atmosphere, the song itself is about a guy and his deathly ill girlfriend but the song is also a metaphor for Cage’s relationship with hip hop itself.
Really great one! "Indie rock" do offer loads of gems! Can't help but hear quite some prog influence in them 😊 (as with many artists from the "genre" - or should I say "attitude towards music"...)
In 2002, a lot of people would judge your music cred by how well you knew their first few albums (Pitchfork was obsessed). I liked the album after this one better, but it was also the one I heard first. 'You were right' (ua-cam.com/video/IhNPeiy-MeU/v-deo.htmlsi=nBAOuOFPLWj0giQC) is my favourite track of theirs, and it's very much a direct retort to the classic rock that indie was often a reaction or homage to. As a life-long hippie sceptic, it made me giggle a bit self-righteously. Don't think I ever really found their depth, though. Worth coming back to now, who knew?
I really like this song. I am familiar with Built to Spill and I have heard a few songs from them. I really enjoyed listening to it. Since you're going to be focusing on Indie Rock, can I suggest a song by Dinosaur Jr? I think you would the song Sludgefeast from their album, You're Living All Over Me.
HOLY COW! When the vocals came in i was literally disoriented that he didn't sing "If it keeps on rainin'/Levee's gonna break"...! Interesting song on it's own merits, though...
Insane e he brought up Mars Volta. Used to argue with friends who liked Mars volta.they would tell me Mas Volta was the best band on earth..I would say listen to built to spill. They Said Omar was better than dug. None of them still believe that., obviously. Doug martsch is too indie rock guitar what water is to the ocean
Treading on Indie hallowed ground here…love this band

you always look so well-rested. like you just woke up from a nice nap
I record not long after waking up.... so I guess that isn't wrong😄
Ah Built to Spill, my favorite band for more than a decade. Broken Chairs is a masterpiece.
Especially the seventeen minute version at paste live on youtube ... Favorite song ever.

Great song. Not quite the same without the solo at the end

This album along with The Smiths - Meat is Murder are the indie best

Love this song! May I recommend Mr Bungle -Goodbye Sober day, Fugazi - Life and Limb, Faust - The Sad Skinhead
Fantastic band
Really love these guys!
Cool review! Thanks a lot.
