  • Nath is back in the shed with part 2 of the Canoe build. Things are moving much quicker than this in real life but Tre is quite a bit behind with the editing.
If you're interested in building a canoe, then maybe this is the series for you. Join Nath and Hayley as they construct a plywood / fibreglass canoe from plans purchased online.

Made two mirror dingys and and two plywood kayaks in my teens in the Scouts. I mainly remember the hours and hours sanding involved.

OMG … what a coincidence !!… just this week I built a 12’ table to layout my 14’ canoe 😮 I have already cut all the planks for mine so now I’m starting to join them together . I’ve already built a 12’ stitch and glue rowboat … did that about 20 yrs ago and I still have it in the garage although it didn’t fair well on the trip to Colorado so it needs a bit of TLC. A good source of quality epoxy resins, wood flour and two part paints is West System … they also do sheet fiber glass as well I think … coming into winter make sure you get an epoxy resin that sets up at lower temperatures that or make sure you put a heater in the garage to keep it warmish… Marine ply is better at resisting ‘Checking’ as it has less voids over standard construction plywood. Checking occurs with temperature changes where the air in the void expands an contracts weakening the top layer of ply causing it to break away and stick up … if you fiberglass the hull it’s very rare that it will happen. Over time painted areas can and do check (happened on my little boat in numerous spots) but can be simply repaired by some epoxy filler sanding and a lick of paint. You might want to consider some Kevlar tape on the bow and stern. These two areas take a beating on canoes but the Kevlar tape takes the brunt of it …. You apply it as you would fiberglass … it’s simple… anyhoo exciting times …. I’ll post some of my progress on my instagram page … ATB Dave Mc

Your doing great Nath, you seem to have the all the canoe building knowledge for your first canoe. Now on your second canoe will it be a stitch and glue or a cedar strip construction?
Look at bit cold in the shop.
    Cheers

I'm in the process of making some outriggers for my canoe and the best place for fiberglass resin is Plymouth fiberglass supplies they're very helpful and should have most of what you need.

Will there be another vid in a month of a canoe shaped bonfire?
Fair play i wouldn’t have the patience and would have fucked it up by now or cut all my fingers off!
