  • 🥳Want to try a more unique tasting microgreen? Well, Cantaloupe microgreens are a great candidate then! And your in luck, because this is our Melon Microgreens full walk-through where we will show you step by step our tutorial for growing them! Cantaloupe aka Melon microgreens have a absolutely wonderful aroma of Cantaloupe with a flavor similar to Cucumber or Borage. They've been a new favorite to add into our morning breakfast smoothie!🤤
    ✅Something that can be challenging with Melon (Cantaloupe) microgreens is getting all of the seed hulls off the crop, but we did a good job of doing this and you should too with the technique we use! Please remember that not ALL melon varieties have edible leaves and you should not grow anything as a microgreen if you have not first checked if its leaves are edible!!
    -If you'd also like to take your microgreen skills to the next level and truly learn everything we know from 2019 to 2021 of growing them, be sure to check out our book "Becoming a Microgreen Master"
    Thank you everyone for the support! If you have any crops that you would like to see a video on, let us know in the comments!👩‍🍳👨‍🌾 Enjoy!🥳

    Hi CJ & Mandi,
    Thank you for sharing your love and knowledge of growing microgreens. Your videos gave me the knowledge and encouragement to start growing microgreens.
    I looked at doing this before, although I got sticker shock by the prices of grow lights. The Barrina LED T5 lights are extremely affordable and work great.
    I used a potting soil mix for my first trays with Organic Liquid Seaweed and Kelp Fertilizer, and I had excellent yields. However, when I changed to coconut coir with Organic Liquid Seaweed and Kelp Fertilizer, my yields dropped. I changed my growing medium because the smell of the peat moss in the potting mix was overpowering.
    I have since switched back to the potting mix with a thin layer of coconut coir on top, and that masked the peat moss smell. Now I am getting excellent yields again.
    I harvested the melon microgreens this morning that I started on the morning of June 26th. My return was 460gram, and they taste fantastic. The melon microgreens for three days weighted with only a half-day blackout.
    Thanks again for sharing, and I look forward to watching your new videos.

    What other melon microgreens can be grown/eaten, I would love you to do a video on a whole list of leaves that can be eaten and used as microgreens such pumpkin, watermelon? eggplant, corn, etc, I think this would be a great video, because I always wonder which flowers and leaves are edible and it is hard to find a video with this info all together.

    Thank you! I had just received my melon seeds and wanted info on how to grow them - this is perfect. I wanted to ask you about something else. I've been listening to you both talk about Ocean Solution and it seems to work great, but I worry about using it myself. Having the entire chart available doesn't necessarily seem like a good thing. We know that things like cadmium, lead and arsenic can build to harmful amounts in our bodies with regular "use" that exceeds what we can process out in a day. Some things are never processed out. We already get a certain amount of toxins in our foods due to their presence in our soils, especially in places with air pollution and some forms of traditional farms.So knowing all that, do we want to add more to our food? I'm not sure about that. I keep going back and forth. So far, I've landed on "no."

      Thank you so much!! Lol, I think you nailed it! Most people prefer to use them in salads and dessert garnishes. It really comes down to the creativity of the chef and what they want to do with it.
      We love to make salads with them and put them into our smoothies! Just gotta make sure they are harvested before they get bitter so taste them daily once they get a bit taller.

    Hi Mandy
    Can you explain how you sanitize and disinfect the trays? Do you use hydrogen peroxide?
    Also could you do a recipe with the harvested green for easy meal?
    Also how long can you store it ?
    Can you explain why you need to weighted tray and could you list which plant seeds don't require weighting?
    You mentioned that you add cup of nutrients to the tray both morning and evening. Is this dependent upon amount of water remaining in tray from morning watering?
    Thank you for sharing.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому +1

      You can sanitize using so many different methods such as bleach, UV and hydrogen-peroxide to name a few. We prefer Hydrogen peroxide.
      We have a video on using some broccoli micros in a burger, but most of the time we simply use the greens on everything... You can put it on salads, sandwiches, smoothies and so on.
      Our microgreens last around 3-6weeks but we prefer to eat most of them within a week or two of harvest.
      We have a planting guide on our website that explains which crops we use weight and which we do not. All crops can grow well without weight, some just grow better than others.
      You are correct, the volume of water needed in the morning and evenings is dependent on the soil/crop. If the soil seems very wet still or if there is water remaining, we will water less. If it is dry, we will water more. As they grow, they demand more water over time usually, with the exception of a few crops like Amaranth and other delicate crops.
      Thanks for the support!

      We prefer to rinse, scrub, rinse then UV sanitize by placing them in the sun for a few hours. When we first started we used bleach but the smell was overpowering and seemed to be overkill. We will be doing a video on a few different sanitation techniques soon! Thank you so much for your support!

    Great channel! I'm learning everything from you. I especially like the comparison videos, it's like a mystery thriller. I'd like to ask, what is the cost per tray, approximately, for the growing medium, coco coir? And, what about using a hemp mat for a growing medium? Take care.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 роки тому

      Thank you so much for the support! On average, Coco Coir is about $0.72 per tray using 8 cups of it. Hemp is about $1.00-$2.00 per tray depending on the quantity that you buy. We like to buy 100ft rolls to keep the cost down on the medium.

It should would work with any substrate

      Thanks , did you ever draw any conclusions on differences between crops grown in NFT vs FD vs the hand watering you use most often. Such as harvest weight, taste, color etc.....?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому

      @@farmerbond4210 There were never any real differences on color or harvest weight as they all used the same nutrients with lights and growing techniques... We did notice that is was very easy to overwater with the automated units, especially the flood and drain. We had quite a bit of mold issues on our F&D system because it would over-saturate everything... Some people love them, but we prefer F&D for adult crops like our edible flowers, collards, kales, basils, etc.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому +2

      Great question Kelsey!! Basically any veggie, fruit, herb or flower that has edible greens can be grown as a microgreen. So first make sure you good research it before you decide to eat it, cause some plants may grow edible fruit but have poisonous greens.

    It seems that the soil on top of seeds just serves the same purpose as some weight on top (though maybe a lot less than the full 15 pounds). Doing so would of course make the clean harvest a bit easier. Any thoughts on that?

      We've just found that this seed germinates better and removes the seed hulls better with a layer over them. We've tried a few times with out but the results were greatly different. We will first do a small trial batch to see how the seed grows directly on a soil-like medium. By watching it’s germination, we can decide whether or not weight work help. We have so much experience with so many varieties that we just kinda know what to look for. Most everything will grow well without weight, some things just grow better with it. For example sunflowers... they perform best with the weight on top.

    I also checked the websites in my country and the cheapest I found for cantaloupe melon was 551€ per kilo. Which is completely ridiculous... I've been following your videos and others and really considering having a go at microgreens and maybe in the future turn it into a business, but I can't import from the US and locally there's almost nothing available. Can't find shelves like yours (the only similar one has the wrong measurements and it's 430€ or 517$ just for the shelve itself), there are some 1020 trays but no shallow ones, only super expensive led grow lights, seeds intended for microgreens are scarce, and everything is just so expensive...
