- The Tornado does not actually touch down until around 4:30 (feel free to skip ahead).
This is the full version of my Wizard of Oz Tornado scene. The storm builds gradually - slow moving sepia clouds, gently moving trees and the sound of the wind. Moving clouds darken at 1:30 .
The scene plays on, with just a black screen - from 5:20... and wind etc. I created this video for the Ōtūmoetai Intermediate School production of the Wizard of Oz.

If someone brightens their screen at 4:44, you will notice that the tornado is literally detached from the sky.
While I accept that a vortex must be in contact with both the ground and the cloud base to be classified as a tornado, turning up the brightness at 4:44 in breach of the scientific method.
The tornado gets really fat when it gets close to the camera. It was thin when it spawned. When it was getting closer, it started getting from thin to fat

The tornado was initially a long way away, and did get much closer.
To be honest I wasn't too worried about the science, it was just a lot of fun learning how to create this in After Effects. There is a bit of math and physics going on, no stock footage.

Did you use after effects for the tornado at 4:30/4:31 ?
Yeah AE, it was for a school stage production, hence the time it takes for the tornado to arrive. Initially hard to look at now, but 9 years ago there weren't a lot of tutorials on how to do this, so I worked with what I had. A massive sky image was create in photoshop and then animated in AE. The tornado is basically shaded spheres in a particle sim, motion blurs and some physics, and a whole lot of experimenting. I didn't have access the flash 3rd party particle plugins, so was what ever was baked into AE.
I still love the close up. especially on a big wall sized screen and with kids acting in front of it and spinning house on wheels in front. - Sorry for the late reply.
