    In 1985 or 6, Green on Red played a small, grungy bar named Millie’s on Dixon Street in Fayetteville, AR. I tended a bar just up the road. That night after work I walked down to catch the end of the show and a drink, as typical. But I experienced something that night I’d never experienced before or since. I walked in and all the chairs on the floor and at the bar were oddly empty. But around the corner at the stage a crowd was gathered, rocking and jumping and singing. There were punkers and cowpokes, hippies and frat bros and girls moving in sync with the sound. Everyone was transfixed to what was coming off the stage. It was joyous and eerie bc the band had captured this audience in a cult-like bond and I was on the outside looking in. One last tune and the show was over. I had definitely missed something potent that night.

    Not to mention a splendid keyboard (harp) player and two guitarists. But the quality of those songs brings the whole thing out above. Above what? Just about everything contemporary anyway.

      Ironic they got sacked, then. There were definitely time keeping issues. The band continued as Chuck and Dan with a variety of hired hands until a brief reunion in 2006.

    • @mitchjam
      @mitchjam  3 роки тому

      you're absolutely right.
      a) they're totally underrated and
      b) there's a (nearly unvisible) cut: before they start with "Down by the River" they have to plug in their guitars again for the (first) encore. "Everybody loves to play the Fool" and "We shall overcome" were the last two songs of the 'regular' show; they can be heard on the (bootleg-) double LP "OLd Dreams Die Young" but not here!
      I changed it; thanks! :)

      on stage. It was definately Edinburgh. They did

      I saw them twice (i think) in Edinburgh and once in
      Aberdeen> The Aberdeen gig was 1st, GFL tour
      I assume. There was hardly anyone there & they
      brought out two cases of beer after the show and we all
      got very very drunk. That must have been like 1984/5 maybe?
