    I continue uncovering and removing gems. from the matrix piece
    I get two fairly large, nicely formed crystals this time
    I'd like your opinion: Do you want me to speed these up even faster? Squish them down to 3-5 minutes?
    Please comment below with your suggestions. Thanks!

    A dremel tool might work better and not damage as many crystals. I don't know the matrix the crystals are in but maybe some type of mild acid could dissolve the matrix without harming the crystals. Just a thought.

    • @OakKnobFarm
      @OakKnobFarm  6 років тому +3

      lizzymoore54 Very good points. First, muriatic acid definitely removes the white calcite(?) Without damaging the quartz. I just don't like using huge amounts like I would need for this big fella. I use it to clean individual stones, however.
      Dremel works ok, but has a tendency to skip sideways due to rotary nature of the tool. I want to try an engraving tool with a carbide bit and "hammer" action to see how it works

      @lizzymoore54 6 років тому +1

      Oak Knob Farm , Dremel makes diamond tip points, I do believe. I've never tried to remove crystals from my specimens but I have used vinegar to dissolve calcite. Of course it takes many weeks and also changing the vinegar a lot when it stops bubbling. Muriatic acid is too strong, smelly and dangerous, in my humble opinion but if you're experienced and confident using it, it is an option. I found a huge piece of crush and run, granite with calcite but it also had a good amount of " fools gold ", pyrite in it and I wanted to expose the crystals of pyrite so I just soaked it in white vinegar. It bubbled quite a bit at first but I ended up having to change it often so I decided I was happy with the results I did get and stopped. I'd never found a 1/2 pound of crush and run before. I found it on a county road. I use Bar-Keepers Friend to remove rust stains from quartz and the like but it too takes time. Also, any rust remover from the local hardware can be used and is not so strong that you have to go outside but it too, takes several times and changes of the solution to work. I have all the time in the world, when it comes to cleaning my beauties. Rocks, RULE! 😉

      Vinegar will definitely work, as you've mentioned. You can monitor the acidity with pH test strips and replenish when it's no longer very acidic. Any acid will work, I imagine, probably even lemon juice in sufficient quantity
      I've had to use muriatic acid at work, and am quite comfortable with it. I'm fortunate to have both a garage and barn to allow them to bubble away and not need to worry about the noxious (and potentially flammable hydrogen) fumes.
      Acids can be neutralized when you're done with them. Dropping a bunch of rusty old nails in a batch of almost dead-acid will usually allow it to neutralize over time and create safe iron-based compounds (I don't remember the exact chemistry anymore). But then I can bring the neutralized pail to the hazardous waste collection day at the local dump. And again - pH test strips tell you when the reaction is complete and it's ready for disposal
      An we us "Iron Out" from the hardware store for iron staining. Works great. Stinky. Use it outside. Also works great on rust stains in your toilet ;)

      lizzymoore54 no problem, always enjoy a good discussion. And thanks for your insight, too. Maybe I'll drag out the Dremel again and make a video.
      I'm blessed with so many stones that I don't mind experimenting on this one. The crystals were only moderate compared to others we have.
      I'm still curious what's inside the rest of the block..... We'll see soon enough

    • @OakKnobFarm
      @OakKnobFarm  6 років тому +1

      Yes, they are worth a little money. Nice single stones can vary from $10 to over $150 depending on the size. Matrix pieces can be worth even more if they have a nice look and multiple crystals / clusters.

    These are not diamonds! As someone who worked with natural diamonds, I object to people calling plain old Quartz, diamonds!

    • @OakKnobFarm
      @OakKnobFarm  5 років тому +1

      You have a right to object, but I did not invent this nickname.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herkimer_diamond
      Anytime anyone asks, I tell them it is quartz, and I put 'diamonds' in quotes to hopefully make it obvious.
      Additionally at least 50% of my Herkimer videos specifically say it is a quartz crystal in the description
