I already have an area in mind after 7 years of thousands of videos watched on hundreds of channels. My choice is based more on scenery and climate. I chose an area within 1 hour or less of Baguio in the mountains. No aircon required. Resorts and beaches within 90 minutes. Farms with fruits and vegetables all around. Big city malls and hospitals very doable in an afternoon. A big group of expats and their families not far to get help if needed. Rentals away from Baguio proper, lower priced. Just waiting to get up there and scout one day.
I love all these awesome UA-camrs well, the good ones you know, old dog, new tricks and a few others. And so glad I stumbled upon yours. I think it was during the interview with old dog. Paul and I think I mentioned it. You look like that guy from walk off the Earth. The group beard guy anyway I. My whole business was working with Realtors and renovating houses and I got a couple rental properties and you're doing. I never even thought about your creative marketing by just talking to people. You know there's no sign. You just go knocking on someone's door and I'm glad I found another one of your videos cuz my concern was, let's say I. You know there's so many you know they fix it up then they kicked me out and I guess that's where rapport and trust and neighbors and all that other stuff is very important. And man I was so excited when I saw that 10-year lease for free. And then I was reading the comments the plumbing. Ah no big deal. I mean I could do anything and plus the labor is so cheap. And I would love to make houses look really awesome. And what a hell of a deal you know. And I never thought about that creative marketing aspect of just talking to the neighbor. And hey, is this for rent? What do you plan on doing dude? That is great. Anyway I guess I'm going to have to check back here. Maybe you've got an email. I have to double check but anyway you lit a fire underneath my ass because that's kind of a cool thing to kind of give back and maybe help other people do stuff and I have to say that I never see people pressure washing everybody's walls are all green. They're sidewalks and driveways are so so dirty all the time lol cuz that's what I used to do to prep houses for realtors so that houses super nice and clean. Never see pressure washers and then also I've noticed that a lot of people don't have lawn mowers they weed eat. They use a weed eater. Anyway. I love what you're doing. That is awesome and then I picked up on your comment which was a great little thinking thing through you. One to put bamboo and you were worried about the air flow. Yeah it wasn't. Yeah that's a good point. And you were mentioning about painting the walls but make sure you bleach it and you want to put a sealer on the top so it doesn't soak through and that was something else. Oh just curious. I even looked it up about the you put some bamboo through concrete and I was googling and they say if you put you know a piece of bamboo it could last about a year. But maybe you're not concerned about that. I was just thinking you know I wonder if he could put pressure treated post steel beam or something and then rip a piece of bamboo in half and then put it back together over the 4x4 post pressure treated. So it looks like the bamboo. But anyway you know my mind is getting all excited cuz oh yeah, it's going to be mid-February. I'd like to go through that area and then there's another guy. But what a great idea that you had cuz I was never even thinking and I love creating and making things nice. And then the other guy chimed in saying a lot of the pipes are narrow toilet paper won't go through. So what you just dig it up now? Do they have septanks? Yeah they probably have septic tanks. Anyway my mind is racing and let me know if I can come visit and say hey and just take a look at some of your houses and I like some of your other. You know you just get in a freaking Jeep knee and just go you know. And every one of y'all say you got to come here because the people are just amazing and and I hear it all the time and I've researched it into the happiest people and I would love to explore the islands anyway. I've got voice text so this is a really long voice text. You know I do this sometimes I ramble cuz I get so excited LOL and think of wow you really text. I know I just hit the microphone on my cell phone. Oh that's another thing I got to look into all those silly little nuances with the you know different types of self service and I'll see if I can contact you. I'll check to see if you have an email and there's another guy where it's real inexpensive but that is so cool all right so anyway, take care. My name is Nelson Cummings by the way and mid-February after the holidays that's kind of what I plan on heading that way and I'm going to stay. I'm getting a one-way ticket probably 3 months or so and then come back and wrap up some stuff either. I'm going to sell at Reynolds and get dividend stocks or keep the rentals because I can make more money with the rentals and I bought mine. Mine Reynolds were dumps and now they're gorgeous rentals. Anyway as you can see I'm not proofreading and I'm not spell checking. This is all voice. Text all right my friend. Thank you for the gift of light and the fire underneath my ass cuz I've been dragging my feet did go over there. Take care Sarah sir not Sarah damn sir. Sir see my friends know that I voice text and I'm too lazy to spell check well I can see I misspelled it but I'm too lazy to correct it but
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat There is no vlogger who has a better yard than yours. And I love the building too. Out of curiosity - maybe ask the owner how much he will sell it if he were to be in selling mood. If I can afford it= I will buy it. LOL!
The family's plan for the property is eventually to tear it down and build a McMansion when they retire in America. That is why it was just sitting there rotting away. They bought it like this for the land. They will definitely give me first right to buy if they change their mind. I think they bought the lots for around $40,000 USD and it would be higher no since that was a few years ago. This is not a cheap area by Filipino standards
Great video Darrell. I appreciate the fact that you mentioned that there are several places of "starting points" when someone first lands in the Philippines. Congrats on your yard,..it's really looking great now. Thanks and keep up the great work my friend.
Everyone I have referred there was very happy. The owners usually will take time to advise you and answer questions. Eric is American but went to high school there. So he knows everything well
Haha.. No I am not a motivational speaker. I simply do videos telling others what I wish others had told me before I came. I only speak of my own experiences never anyone else's
Good advice. I would say just make a few trips prior to actually moving there. I made about 6 trips before I moved to the Philippines. The culture is different. Some guys pack up and move without visiting first. They get here and can't adapt.
@@glidden67 Excellent question. The culture. There are aspects of the culture that you must experience first hand. You might adapt and you might not. That is why you must make a few trips prior to moving to the Philippines.
I just watched your video about the banking and phone and visa renewal. It answered so many of my questions. I first came across your channel when you were interviewed by The Old Dog. Paul is such an amazing and helpful person. My budget is $1500 US because I support a family of 5. But it is doable because of the cost of living on our island of Mariripi.
thanks Darell! you're the few Philippines vloggers I still follow. I like your laid back style. It was in 2016 that I traveled the Philippines for 3 months. To see if I could retire there. Went to places like Camiguin and Mindanao, where even Filipino's said I should not go to. Love the country and the people. I could live there, but fate brought me to Thailand, where I now retire.
I’m so glad you mentioned arriving at the airport . It can be truly overwhelming even if you have people waiting for you. I don’t know how I would have handled it there wasn’t people that I was familiar with to guide me to where our group was staying.
Once again, great Vlog, I enjoy watching everyone that you make you have really good points and you keep it very interesting! Thank you so much greetings from Canada 🇨🇦
I will do that. I would love to meet you in person. I am coming down in December 21 of this year for five weeks. I am planning a trip to Almeria, which is in Leyte So if you are close nearby that I could stop by and have a chat. I do have some questions I would like to ask you because I love your property with the home and the privacy there that’s what I’m looking for if I could find it .
Another great video brother ! I had one of my Army brothers drop by for a few days unexpectedly. He was blown away by your house's transformation, cost, etc. He (as are most family and friends) was stunned I've decided to retire there instead of Jamaica. That is until I showed him my "Pros" list. :) I also showed him the fears list you requested, and he added a few lol Sorry I haven't sent it yet. Kind of processing some new knowledge he dropped on me. Should be there today brother. Safe journey
The best thing about my FIRST trip to the Philippines was My friends met me at the airport. I would never had attempted coming here by myself. Your yard is looking GREAT and it's nice to see you are growing grass instead of sweeping the dirt🤣 Have you tried shopping at CITIMART? Their meat & fish department is so clean it looks and smells like a hospital surgery department. Spotless! If you shop at S&R I recommend that you do *NOT* eat at their food court. The prices are USA expensive and disappointing quality. I also noticed many of the shoppers are from a different income status. Many drive late model cars and they have been eating well😅
Well I made the video for those who don't have someone to meet them when they land. They can see the Drake and the people there. Hope fully that can help them relax and take the leap of faith to follow their dreams
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat sending right now. I spent the weekend at the Bel Air development. 2 days there is too much for me. I think I only saw 3 trees there! I prefer the coconut orchards at the farm
I wish I was a handyman - would love to get a almost-for-free fixer-upper. I lived once in Cebu City in such a simple house 30 bucks per month in a good neighbourhood.
You're the only ex-pat I watch, because you talk about the realities of life...I too would like to just relax and enjoy what's left of my life, before it's too late...Thanks for keeping it real sir.
I just wanted to say I've been watching your channel for about a year now. And I absolutely love your content. I'm a few years away from retirement. Stocking my savings to supplement my retirement. I absolutely love your place and your situation. That is what my dream retirement would be and I'm really paying attention to your lessons so when I do retire I can have the same type of experience if not better. Thank you so much and I hope you have many many beautiful days in the Philippines. And hope to one day see you there.
Wow!! Thank you my friend. If there is any help I can give let me know. Again try to find an inexpensive travel time and come for a visit. It will help you prepare and may ever save you money in the long run
As usual a great video, as one explores alternatives for living the retired life you bring info to the table that induces hope for the lesser fortunate, the possibilities are available if you're open minded and at the same time can satisfy that hunger for adventure that most people have but thought lost in the jungle of bills, responsibility and ridiculous high cost of living in the West. I think you highlight that proverbial light at the end of the tunnel that shows you need to re-engage with that creative mind so many people have lost along the way of that mind-numbing life in the west, keep it up, as always👍
Dude the yard is looking awesome. It would be cool to see a vid just showing what you plant & why it thrives there. Or the extra fresh food you get & a couple of things you can cook with them.
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat I know. You know that feeling of life just hitting you with more & more. Thats my life. Just getting through it. I will try calling you maybe this coming weekend Im off to bed & we can catch up.
Hey Congratulations on your yard and garden. First thing I noticed at the start of the video. Guess my roots are showing. ha. Excellent video with great advice. Have a plan and don't get in a hurry. " no matter where you go there you are" - Another Buckaroo Banzai fan? For me the best tidbits were landing in Angeles City and Drake hotel. Info like that is gold going into a country for the first time. Thanks for the video!
Yes. It was actually hard to recommend without sounding like an infomercial. But I have referred many people there and everyone was very satisfied for many reasons. One guy stayed a month and the actually got help from a security guard finding an apartment. I know if you go there you will get a safe environment and good advice on referring you to everything from Hair cuts etc.
😎👍🇺🇲 The little farm is coming along wonderfully. Too bad you can't grow a few stake plants, coffee vines and a couple lobster trees. 😏 Great advice for the first timers. It really is a huge undertaking. Moving to a completely unfamiliar place can be overwhelming. Baby steps is the key. Food, Aircon and a comfortable place to watch TV and eat should be first on the list. That's just the first day. Breathe for a couple of days. Let your brain relax and regroup. Then start venturing out and hunting for more food. Start finding groceries. Maybe fill one of your habits/hobbies. Slowly figuring out where the important things are available. After a week or so. You'd self-sufficient and able to think straight. I personally don't have a plan yet. I want to visit several more times. I don't have a preferred city yet but I certainly don't want to be in Manila for more than a couple of days. I'll pick a different place to spend my 2 weeks. Maybe Dumaguete. That place seems small, slow and chill. We're all so much different. Each of us have different needs and desires. Hard to guide the masses. Although there's a few things everyone needs. Food, lodging, Aircon and coffee. If you don't need coffee to survive. You landed on the wrong planet and should go home 🤨 😆 After the basics are satisfied. The brain can think straight and see clearly. Sort of. Cheers brother from Fluffy in the Seattle WA area ✌️.
Thank you my friend. Did I tell you I was born in Aberdeen?? I agree 100% with everything you said. That first coming is a large stumbling block for those who haven't been here
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat No you hadn't mentioned it. I was actually the only one in my family born out of Washington State. I was born in Torrance California into an old school biker family. That ended when we got too big to stay in saddle bags on beer runs. 😏 I'm the only motorcycle enthusiast left. I've got a few videos. You should check them out when you're really really bored 😁 They're just a project diary, nothing special. Anyway. Have a great day brother and go water those lobster trees.
Thank you Rory. More interesting than watching me talk into a microphone I think too. I always seem to have so much extra footage so why not share the atmosphere too
Always enjoy your vids , I think i envy your new lifestyle. HOW about a food / cooking vid , that would be cool ...... terry from CANADA , ALBERTA ......
Yes. In the Philippines if you want an older less expensive place it is common for the tenet to fix it up to their stands if they want it. If you don't like it the owners just say "Next" and the Filipino behind you will be happy with it at that price. In my case I got supper low rent and will saving a lot by fixing it rather than renting on already fixed up so it takes a lot of sense financially when you can save a lot of money
Although it's not ideal for some but I always fry from Ireland to hong kong. Arrive in hk about 5:30pm after 12 hour flight. I take a few hours because my next flight is around 10pm to manila. I get some food, walk around a bit, go outside and vape. ...... whatever. Leave hk around 10pm and Arrive in manila 00:05 It's quiet. No long lines. The staff and immigration officers are more relaxed. They will talk to you and make jokes with you. There's no pressure on them at that time. Within 15 minutes of getting off the plane I'm already through immigration and security. Nobody bothers me. Its a totally different atmosphere. Board PAL bus and change terminals (free if flying with them) My next leg of the journey is 4am for butuan. Arrive at 6am. If you can....... try and Arrive in manila at night. Its a lot more stress free
Very good advice. I also had a subscriber with a very long layover. He rented a small cubical for a bout 7 hours right there in the airport. Like a miniature sleeping room with out leaving the airport
👍👍👍 I'm on my 9th location looking for the right place with the right rental. It is as exhausting as you said. I sorta envy the guys who go straight to the place their filipina lives. Then I pity them, lol.
@Ex-Pensive_Expat Landed in Cebu, then Dipolog, Panglao, Tagbilaran, Dumaguete, Zamboanguita (Dauin), Malaybalay, Cagayan De Oro, now in Butuan City. Have spent one week to one month in these places, usually only 10 days to 2 weeks. Took some time to realize I don't want an area with many tourists/foreigners. Big cities like Cebu and Cagayan are too much traffic, air pollution, chaos for me. The inability to find the right place is fully on my mentality and not on the Philippines.
I'm going back to the states to renew my passport and a few things. I'll finish when I get back. I have several unfinished projects. Just doing everything with my SS income and that takes time
Thanks for sharing your knowledge to others around the 🌎 world!! As a Canadian retired teacher/ I’d love to visit the areas you’ve mentioned! And like you said financial freedom seems great 👍 which areas would you suggest for air b n b close to oceans so I can snorkel and dive? Thanks again maybe 🤔 I’ll meet you at the market some day 😊
I will look into that. Dumaguete is well know for diving and snorkeling is An aria called Dauin near Dumaguete. Also if you go there I suggest visiting Critter Republic. They offer trips to Oppo Island and dive lessons too. I am sure there are many areas of the Philippines but that is the only one I know first hand experience
Everyone is different in their expectations... travelling isn't expensive, but what I find is short term accommodation is.! going month to month isn't easy to find budget friendly...looking at the out lying country's Vietnam cambodia provide better overall value...Most guys compromise on budget to accommodate romantic interests and that's when things get interesting on the budget front
Excellent point 👉 my wife is filipina married 12 years. we both have planned for many years. i bought a beautiful condo in manila in my name, and we both built on land she bought in palawan also in leyte there is no way you can live in the United States on less than $4500.00 month retired good luck i would say yes you can and yes please investigate your options you can live as high as you want or be at ease with what you got it's better in the Philippines 🇵🇭
If coming to retire I think the most important consideration is what health care facilities are available in a given location. It seems to be a major drawback of the Philippines that there is a shortage of fully qualified doctors and medical facilities.
I've lived near cities and I haven't found that to be true at all?? I'm sure there areas that are not well covered. But to an extant that can be also true in the states like in the mid west in remote areas.
This is the biggest reason im looking into moving there when i retire. I have 6 more years tell i can retire early at 62. And if i stay here in the states ill never be able to retire and at this time i cant even afford to buy a house. Even renting here is over 1200 plus bucks and thats the low end . And that would be in the bad parts of town.
Wow I feel good now I did exactly that it takes time to find a good deal and what I found not perfect but I'm still looking for the right place right deal but I'm in a 15k house instead of 40k air bnb
I'd really want to live in PH , maybe in 5 years if I manage to save a bit of money but I'm thinking about future and I see alot of people moving out of US due to bad economy , this will make prices in PH increase alot
Not sure I agree with that. Foreigners can not own land here only condos The building and labor cost are such that the supply continually stays ahead of the demand curve unlike the US. So the supply and demand stay in check. Bottom line I don't see a shortage on the horizon. If building stopped or slowed down then I'd agree with you.
Good words about slow down and take your time when first getting there, your on Island Time. Do you need to bring 1,000's in emergency money with you or can you just transfer money from your US bank to G-Cash or Wise, then go pick it up?
When I come, I plan on renting an airbnb for a week or two at different locations until I find where I want to put down some roots. I plan on starting in Cebu and then travel around for a while.
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat I will be coming for good when I come. I have an older dog, he's the only thing stopping me from leaving right now or I'd be on a plane today.

I just bought a house to Be built in a Porac subdivision at fiesta . Never lived there liked the visit. Once they build the high speed rail it will be 1 1/2 hour from Manila

@@Ex-Pensive_Expat thank you for the response Monthly budget: $800-1000 I like the area that you are living in via your post and the idea of getting a home base fixer upper inexpensive and long term.

You have the nicest yard! You got the best there - awesome!
Wow, thank you
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat There is no vlogger who has a better yard than yours.

Good advice. I would say just make a few trips prior to actually moving there. I made about 6 trips before I moved to the Philippines. The culture is different. Some guys pack up and move without visiting first. They get here and can't adapt.
it's always best if you can afford to make several trips.
What is it they can’t adapt too?
@@glidden67 Excellent question. The culture. There are aspects of the culture that you must experience first hand. You might adapt and you might not. That is why you must make a few trips prior to moving to the Philippines.
In the island time here it's not unusual for people to be an hour late for an appointment ""Island time"'. Just one example
It's best if you can afford too.

Thank you my friend. Yes I felt if you had fears others may also so I wanted to cover them in a video. No rush

Thank you Dennis. I always enjoy your insight also

This was a great video, could you maybe do a video about things to bring/prepare right before you move to pH?
Okay. I will get started on that
😎👍🇺🇲
The little farm is coming along wonderfully.
Too bad you can't grow a few stake plants, coffee vines and a couple lobster trees. 😏
Great advice for the first timers.
You landed on the wrong planet and should go home 🤨
😆
After the basics are satisfied. The brain can think straight and see clearly. Sort of.
Cheers brother from Fluffy in the Seattle WA area ✌️.

I was going to ask about the Drake Hotel.
Yes. I've stayed there 4 times and referred a few others

At least you haven't jumped into anything you'll regret

I hear ya. It was much worse I think in San Diego and San Francisco where I'm from
Wow I feel good now I did exactly that it takes time to find a good deal and what I found not perfect but I'm still looking for the right place right deal but I'm in a 15k house instead of 40k air bnb

Can't hurt to bring it on first trip, But after that just send it to yourself when you need it
