How to Use Content Aware Scale in Photoshop
Need more room in your photo? In this episode, we show you how to extend a photo using content-aware scale.
Regular Scale vs. Content Aware Scale
To apply a regular scale to an image, go to ‘Edit - Transform - Scale’ and stretch the image. This will stretch every pixel of the photo, including details like people.
The Content-Aware Scale tool will stretch areas with less detail first, leaving more detailed areas untouched. In this example, we use the Content-Aware Scale tool to stretch the background, while leaving the subject in place. To apply a Content Aware Scale, select an area of the photo then go to ‘Edit - Content Aware Scale’.
How to Use Warp in Photoshop
To create more room for type in this image, we use the warp tool to move the clouds. To use the warp tool, start by creating a selection around the area to be stretched. Make sure to select more than needed, allowing more flexibility with the warp tool.
After making a selection, go to ‘Edit - Transform - Warp’. Next, click and drag your image to apply the warp.

I agree. I run sound a lot and may be more sensitive to this sort of thing than most, but it had may playing with my headphone cord a lot trying to eliminate the problem on my end. This background noise was rather distracting. I have watched many of these videos, though and have enjoyed them immensely, only experiencing this problem on this one.

I'm so glad everyone is is using this forum to comment about ur looks, so helpful but... I'm using CS6 i guess it's Ver.13.0 x64 and when I attempt to follow ur instruts the content aware arrows does n't pop up to stretch the image horizontally, the warp tool doesn't stay available for selection, and the Ctrl T isn't available to select the warp option. Is it that my software is out of date or could it be something else. Please Aaron I'd like your answer as I'm not soliciting answers from the fashion police!

Thanks for sharing your expertise. I have learned so much from your tutorials. I am having trouble with the expand background technique. I crop and stretch, hit enter. Apply content-aware scale, a bounding box appears around my image. I grab a handle to drag and stretch out. At this point the whole image enlarges on all sides, which I don't want. I want to stretch one side. Instead the whole image enlarges and the people in the photo get distorted. What am I doing wrong. Please help, thanks.

I like what you did with the content aware scale tool...... what you did at 2mins 40 though, bad aspect ratio, most people cant see that this is "really weird", i`ve seen lots of vids/photos where the people are stretched, its called aspect ratio blindness i believe

Seriously... What am I doing wrong?? :( Every time I try to use the content aware scale i just stretches it in all directions, making it look even worse than with the transform tool :/ I've tried to check and uncheck all boxes but it makes no difference... Why is it not only stretching in towards the direction I pull it but in all 4??

You are awesome I appreciate your tutorials and all the knowledge you share with us.
About content-aware, I used in a different way. You square select the are (in this case the empty area) that you want to fill touching a little bit of the picture (in this case will be the vertical line of clouds sky ocean and sand) then you go to fill/content-aware and photoshop automatically will fill it with similar areas and color to what you are touching a little bit from the picture. Does that make sense?

Not sure if that's what it is, and not sure how I feel about the effect.

Hi Aaron. Have you done anything on saving images in Photoshop? I find the Image Processor so handy but know very little of what formats and sizes are best for the web (fb as oppossed to flickr etc), large format billboard prints, canvas, high quality advertising brochures, the office colour laser, and so on. It's a huge and confusing topic to me, so even if you just covered some of the more commonly used ones it would be a real help. Perhaps the are others who would agree?

I assume that this program is based on an earlier version of PS. In PS CC, "Control T" does not seem to take me to the transform mode like it did for you. I had to go up to the edit tab for that. Also, and more perplexing, when I selected the right side of the image I was working with to scale, when I went to scale, I got a feathered checkerboard pattern along the left, top and bottom edges. After scaling, I also got a very definite vertical blurred area on the left edge of the transform as well as a line along the left side that corresponded to the polygon I created to protect the subject. Any thoughts on what caused these issues in PS CC and how to avoid them?

Hey Aaron! I have this photo idea but I just cannot for the life of me figure out how to go about it!!
I have a photo of my girlfriend holding up a puzzle piece to my skin while I'm on the table. The goal here is to have a photo where I'm kind of missing pieces like I'm am unfinished puzzle. The issue is I'm not entirely clear on how to go about it. I've considered making selections of full sized puzzle edges over a photo of the background without us in it and using that to fill in areas where I'm in pieces and I've also considered using several brushes shaped like puzzle pieces. I just don't know what to do!!!
