      And it could be seen as actual "true" Damascus steel. Pattern welded steel isn't what gave the swords from Damascus their famous pattern. It was already in the Wootz steel, as FZ does it pretty much.

    Seeing how little scale that steel has coming out of the forge like that, it must have a good content of vanadium and chromium. Should make for quite a durable blade, and of course the delicate texture of the pattern of crucible steel is something to behold. Very lovely.

      is that the two ingredients he adds at the begining?

    • @derschwarzgeist
      @derschwarzgeist Рік тому

      If all he added was the steel bearings, graphite, and glass, there wouldn't be any more chromium or vanadium than was in the steel to begin with.

      Wootz damascus is real damascus steel. The reason it looks different, is because you are used to seeing what most people call damascus, which is just pattern welded steel of different types.

      Alloying elements like vanadium, chromium, molybdenum etc. Are energetically favorable for carbide formation so if you thermal cycle any high alloy steel enough you will get carbide banding however a dendritic structure is necessary to start with so the steel must be melted or held very close to its melting point for an extended period
