Please consider Will You by Hazel OÇonnor for a future female Friday. It's a cracking track with some sublime Saxophone on it. (Make sure you listen to the full version.) It's something you should both enjoy. It was a big hit in the UK, not so sure about the US.
I remember another interesting act from Top the Pops with the musical chameleons, Sparks, doing "THIS TOWN AINT BIG ENOUGH FOR THE BOTH OF US". Super fast lyrics with unusual vocals and audio to back it up.
This was a two hit wonder. They met in school. They formed in 1978, recorded an album and broke up in 1979. She's written a lot of songs for other people.
Amber, i was really hoping you would have picked a Sinead O'Connor for female Friday since she just passed a couple of days ago. Hopefully you guys can do a couple songs by her soon. She had a HUGE hit with a cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2U, great song, very emotional & she always had a great voice. Mandinka is a good rocker. She was very religious & political & spoke out on some heavy topics including women's rights & was very controversial on how she went about pointing things out, that people didn't really want to acknowledge. Very misunderstood & very sad that she passed at such a young age. R.I.P. Sinead.
Big hit in the UK and elsewhere around the world, but "Dancing in the City" peaked @ #43 on the Billboard Hot 100. First charted in Dec. 1978 and continued into 1979 for a total of 11 weeks. I have no memory of ever hearing this song on the radio but I've seen the title referenced somewhere. I assumed it was going to be 80s House music but I was wrong.
Our local radio stations DID play this song, and I really liked it, so I'm probably one of the few people left that still have this song on a 7" single / 45 rpm record.
I am BINGE watching y'all, and having a wonderful Friday night! Really love your energy and the vibe you bring to the show. A few more AMAZING groups...Mother's Finest-Baby Love. 10,000 Maniacs-Because the Night AND America-A Horse With No Name
Not as big a hit in the U.S. as other countries, but got some play. The B-side of this, "Take My Number," is also good (yacht rock style tune). I had a bit of a crush on Kit. This song reminds me of some ABBA tunes, and the #1 disco hit "Fly Robin Fly" by Silver Convention (which would work for female Friday, as the vocal trio was all female).
'Top of the Pops' peak was the era prior to Queen really kicking of the video promo era with 'Bohemian Rhapsody' when bands used to turn up and (usually) mime along to their records to get them heard. Once performers got into the 'Record song-make a video-sit back' routine it fired up the likes of MTV and the myriad of other video shows and channels.
This was a big hit in Australia in late 1978. It got tons of airplay and for the life of me I can't understand why so many in the comment section haven't heard of it. Maybe it was only released in Great Britain and Australia.
Please do another Sinead reaction… my all-time favorite singer/songwriter May she RIP… Fire On Babylon, Black Boys On Mopeds, Emperor’s New Clothes… so many great songs. :)
This is one of those songs that really grows on you, i like it more now than i did when it was in the charts. A disco classic i know you guys will love is Shirley and Company - Shame Shame Shame.
@@blackblake3658 They came up in the same era as those artist and are familiar with them and tend to play more older and classic songs they probably haven't heard before.
Had to look this up. This was a British hit. Peaked at 43 in the US. Either "the Ron Squad family" has many British family members or this was a Patreon "suggestion."
Most of the old British TV music shows like Top Of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test are long gone, but a long-running favorite that's still around is Later with Jools Holland. According to the wikipedia page, it's shown on the MTV Live channel in the US, although they cut out a couple of acts per show in order to air commercials (the original is on the BBC so it doesn't have commercials). Jools Holland was the keyboard player with the band Squeeze, then he presented a very trendy music show called The Tube on UK Channel 4 in the '80s. 'Later' started in 1992, and he also runs The Jools Holland Rhythm And Blues Orchestra. If you want to see a Later performance that'd also be idea for Female Friday, check these out: Singer = Beverley Knight, song = 'Black Butta': ua-cam.com/video/WLgSEnMVkiE/v-deo.html Singer = KT Tunstall, song = 'Black Horse & The Cherry Tree': ua-cam.com/video/FGT0A2Hz-uk/v-deo.html (This performance pretty much launched KT Tunstall's career, and she only got onto the show at the last minute because somebody else cancelled!)
The Mamas & The Papas "Words Of Love". John Phillips really showcased Mama Cass' voice with this song. It shows the raw range of voice she had...it was a top 5 in 1967.
Back to 1978, just got back from living in Aruba for four years and moving back to the Netherlands. This was on Toppop, a musical show every week . This song reminds me of that summer
Listening to this has taken me back to a 5 or 6-year-old Rich. This was one of my favourite songs of 1978. To follow up with Female Friday, I recommend another song, released the same year, called Substitute by Clout. This song was originally released by The Righteous Brothers, but their version sounds a bit weird. The Clout version is worth a listen.
Amber please add Melissa Manchester to your Female Friday line up. Her voice is powerful. You guys haven’t reacted to her yet. I would recommend “Through the Eyes of Love” (the video with scenes from Ice Castles is good), “Come in From the Rain” , or “Don’t Cry Out Loud” (try to avoid the video with the clowns, it’s creepy).
