I had never heard of Cabazons, until I moved to Sonoma County 10 years ago. I grew up catfishing the Mississippi River. A guy took me up north of Jenner for a catch and cook camp. Amazing fish!
Those have to be the biggest lings & cabazons I have seen off the rocks. We always use squid and have never caught anything that big. Time to switch up my bait lol.
I love braid but for rock fishing from the shore mono is a must if you’re fishing from a boat use a mono leader with braid because the sharp igneous rocks will cut the braid ridiculously easy nice fishing tho mate y’all were slaying em im trying to remember if I’ve seen this spot for diving but I never went in because of the cliffs
You'd do really amazing work on both the fishing and the filming. Are you bouncing off the bottom or working higher up? Seems like the snags would be a bummer.
Thanks Nick! We try to find areas that seem like ambush points. The water is pretty clear up there. Try to find underwater points or rock piles. Anywhere that looks fishy. We haven't had an exact method. Trial and error. However the areas that seem to look good tend to produce fish for us.
Some cliffs we are up 50ft. A few clips from this video we were only about 10 feet up. The small lingcod we catch at the end of the video is up really high. 50+ feet.

@@sonomacreekoutdoors7104 email ok? Bbturtle2@yahoo.com I just started rock fishing off shore again this year. I mostly do charters at half moon bay and emeryville. Ankeny, Seawolf and Tigerfish. This is not this spot, however here's a great fishing spot (best I have ever found from shore) but you have to have some nerve to get there as you have to make your way down a very steep cliff in the neighborhood of 650 feet. Warning to the wise, there is serious danger if you are not careful, but this spot will not disappoint you. You will know this is a great spot because you will hear the sea lions below barking to all their friends that, "This is the place." Travel down Highway one south of Big Sur to the Coast Big Sur then turn around and go to the second embankment north of there called Seal Beach Overlook. You can cross reference this location on Google maps. You will see a seriously steep cliff. (If it is the same as it was 36 years ago when I fished this spot you will also see what appears to be a path that goes about 100 feet and then ends. Now (VERY CAREFULLY) make your way down that sea cliff. If you go too far south you will come up against an extremely steep vertical cliff that you might meet your demise on so just head straight down slightly north. You will soon be going down a loose shale slope and that last about half the length of the hill. (Note that this is a serious challenge on the way back up the hill as this amounts to 3 steps up to make 1 step of progress after you slide down.) The perfect spot to fish is a rock that sits about 35 or 40 feet off the water where you can cast out from. The best time to go is in the early morning as the winds will be calm. So go early as the winds will put a damper on this unbelievably great spot. When my brother and I fished the spot with a few friends we cleaned house using squid for bait. The fishing is so good you can use a party boat rig with 3 hooks with the red and yellow yarn and reel in three fish at a time on a consistent basis. I have never seen this kind of fishing from the shore. Anywhere! We also never saw the remains of anyone else's gear down there. One of the guys left a pole down there on a regular basis and it never disappeared on him! So you know this spot is remote and hard to get to. The group of us usually limited within an hour. Back then it was 20 fish total per person. We made the mistake the first time around of lugging all that fish up the hill. The second time we brought fillet knives with us and left the remains for the seagulls. Now I believe the limit is 10. You should easily limit within an hour. As fast as you can put it out there we reeled it back in. There are tons of all varieties of cods, lings, caps, dolly varden's, sharks, flounders and about anything else you can imagine. My brother ended up putting climbing gear hooks into the rocks to make it safer to climb as it is a bit of a risk to get down there and back. It may or may not be there now. That gear is a good 30 years old minimum so you might want to replace it. A downside of that hill is that there is a lot of poison oak so you might want to use a poison oak wash before and after you go down to avoid the itch. The reason we found it was because there was a rock slide on highway 1 preventing us from going any further south where our initial choice was to fish, so we decided to take a chance and venture down the hill, and the rest is history.
