Great video Bmac. This is exactly what I teach at every seminar and in every class about rubber guard. It comes from the overhook and butterfly guard. It’s important to base rubber guard as just an option off a good overhook/underhook butterfly guard game. 👌👊

Very good video! Back in 2007, I bought the “Mastering the Rubberguard” book, and quickly became a rubberguard spammer. My problem was that the system worked so well that I neglected almost all other aspects of grappling for a very long time. I won a few MMA fights using Eddie’s game plans from that book, and I thought I was set.
I clicked on this video specifically because the thumbnail reminded me of an experience: At a grappling tournament, I was competing against one of Ricky Lundell’s students (Ricky was one of my biggest inspirations in submission grappling, so I felt a lot of pressure competing against his team)
But like clockwork, I followed the steps from the books exactly, and started to set up an omoplata. It was working, I nearly had it, then from the sidelines, I hear the voice of my grappling hero, Ricky Lundell call out “Don’t worry, you’re fine. Rubberguard doesn’t work.”
He said this as if coaching his athlete, but in reality, he was talking to me. I suddenly doubted the system, doubted myself, loosened up for just long enough- he passed my guard and tapped me out.
So the moral of the story (1) Rubber guard works, but you gotta believe! (2) it’s just a piece of the puzzle, not the whole thing (3) Never meet your heroes? Nah, Ricky was super cool- and I have since used variations of that cornering trick he showed me where you pretend you’re talking to your athlete, but you’re really pulling the other guy’s strings- that’s changed the tides of a lot of fights.
Anyway, I enjoy your content a lot! Thanks for the video, it brought back a lot of memories. Maybe I’ll spam rubberguard again tonight at the gym for old times sake.

I've been trying to get a rubber gaurd gameplan ever since i started watching you. It would be great to see an in depth view of the options i have in one spot. Bc as of now, you would have to find out all the moves from RG and look them up individually (which i've done many times)

Thanks for the point about raising my knee up to my face rather than grabbing my foot and putting that pressure back on my knee. I’ve had some success with rubber guard but can now see that the slight strain I’ve been feeling on either side of my knee is likely due to the torque I’ve been putting on the knee grabbing my foot rather than lifting my knee higher to my head.

You're 100% correct, no need for rubber guard and wasting your time getting ridiculously flexible just to do it. Hook/Williams guard (what Bravo called, "London,") is the exact same thing without putting your body in awkward and unnatural positions which you will be paying the price for later in life. It's not my fault Bravo is too stoned to figure out the extremely easy counter to why he claims he doesn't use it and eliminated it from his teachings.

Rubber guard doesn't work because I can't stick my big toe in my mouth.
It doesn't work because I am old, fat, not flexible and very lazy.
Sorry, I am a throw back old school fool with skills from the Rickson Gracie era.

Lachlan, Gordon and Danaher ain’t fking with rubber guard, and it doesn’t work on them so I won’t even waste my time. Especially after I watched Marcelo Garcia absolutely sht on Eddie Bravos attempt to do anything.

So you're measure of what you will train is only what will work on Marcelo or Gordon? So you don't do anything? Because we don't even see these guys get their guards passed, much less submitted.
Expand your horizons a little bit and just enjoy jiu jitsu. The chances that need will compete against that level practically zero.

For MMA it doesn't. A traditional guard is better. Rubber guard guarantee you will either lie there and lose a decision or get passed and beat up

Tony Ferguson won the UFC interim title by submission from his guard.
