  • In this video we look at the latest line of dubiously badged "Designed and engineered in the UK" Klark Teknik products from Music Group (Behringer) and ask if it has a useful place in the rack? Spoiler alert... Mark quite likes it, but not as a traditional chorus unit!

    I think it would more effective to click on each setting in the middle of a verse/bar and not at the beginning of a bar where the vocals and/or other instruments dynamically change thus negating ability to fully hear the difference.

    Back in the 80s/ 90s, the Dimension D was my go-to effect as a bass thickener. I’d put it on the direct out of the bass channel in mono mode, setting 4, and blend the effect in to give the bass some stereo width. The AMS 1580 on dual harmonise +4/-4 was better doing the same job for guitars, but it introduced a flam on the bass which was ugly if the bass was really tight with the kick, the DimD didn’t do that (but wasn’t quite as wide).

    It’s the added 3rd Dimension which makes this thing usable... I had the previous model, with just 2 Dimensions... until some careless bugger turned it sideways on, so now I can’t perceive it anymore.
    Mark’s talking through it sounds like he’s shouting down a drainpipe... but, using my good headphones to listen to the song through my audio interface, I couldn’t hear any difference between the settings... mind you, those Emperor’s new clothes looked spectacular.

    Given how much space there is inside it, I truly wish they'd have made it 1U. Re-racking it is entirely possible but the PCB mounted jacks and stuff will make that annoying where it would have been trivial in the design stage. Still, it's a cool unit.

    With this surface-mount PCB of today, I don't see why this couldn't be a half-rack 1U jobby. I know what matters is the sound not the design, but the only reason the unit is the size it is, is because of the design it's copying. Who is someone that buys Behringer gear trying to impress? Behringer's target audience (ie bedroom producers such as myself) won't have enough rack space to dedicate this unit to that could be dedicated to master bus compressors or power amps.
    Sounds nice though! Would love a video comparing it to the original, as you have so excellently done in the past with other rip-offs. Behringer failed at stereo image before with their Juno chorus pedal, but the BBD-320 seems to be an improvement.

    • @PresentDayProduction
      @PresentDayProduction  3 роки тому +2

    I prefer the Boss CE-2 sound for traditional chorus. But, when you want something more subtle, and especially for a stereo rig, the D is fantastic. But, where it really shines is rendering mono synths in beautifully panoramic stereo; and there the more subtle chorus effect works better with bass heavy / full range synth tones. And with something like a Moog or SH-101. On analogue monosynth bass tones, polysynth pads and strings and glassy DX-like FM tones. I like chorus better on synths or bass, than on guitars.

Anyway, I've been listening to a lot of tests, reviews and comparisons the last couple of days and this is one of the few that highlights its intended use. If you want something that has a very similar flavour but works (probably) equally as well on single sources full wet, my impression is that the Boss DCw2 is a better bet. All four modes there have a distinct character whereas 2 and 3 don't seem to do much here and on the original.

    This and the Roland unit have the dry signal already mixed in and maybe even in various amounts based on those buttons. There is no 100% wet signal, this was already all perfectly balanced the way they wanted it based on just throwing the full signal through. When you mix 50% in you are not only possibly introducing phase issues but not listening to it as it was intended.

  • @BassBaseBerlin
    @BassBaseBerlin 3 роки тому +3

    I really, really need this device! Such a muppet seems to be very useful in every studio! Oh ... this video was about the unit ... OK:
    The difference from 0-1-2-3-4-all was quite subtle. I was using my DT770 for listening. The way from all-to-0 was really audible. So for me it would be more easy to get the "impact" if you go from 0-1-2-3-4-all-0 but then from 0-all-0-all-0-all - then I could catch better what this unit really did to the sound. After getting somehow used to the change I could better understand if you go 0-1-0-2-0-3-0-4 to get the difference and of couse also 0-1-2-3-4 as you did. This is just my humble opinion - but other comments stated, that the differences are subtle and this would increase the understanding for this effect - at least for me.
    But anyhow - great review, love (and added) your channel! Even if I'm not interested in this device I love to see gear reviews ... to get to this decision.

    If one had space in a rack for live use it parallel through an analog desk it would be great and cheaper than buying a dc2w pedal and negate the need of using 2 or 3 amps to achieve the same results….! Plus being able to switch it on and off with a loop switcher like the boss es5 would save space on the pedal board which is ideal for a tidy pub band that do there own sound!

    Funny video (and a good one), throwing a moral critique jab while complimenting on build. The connections straight on the pcb make me shiver... They really should've added MIDI connection for control. Or at least have the remote connection in the back. Nice copy but if you're making the insides modern, please upgrade the usability to 2021 as well. I swore this wouldn't end up in my rack, firstly because it wasn't that amazing of a chorus to me, secondly because it's the size of a tube power amp, and thirdly because of the usability. But I've changed my mind about the sound, even though it doesn't quite match the original and because it's the same price as a regular pedal (well, the build is not different from a regular pedal either, no big transformers or the repairability/modability as analog big through hole component circuits). The size is still a turn off, as well as the impracticality. Part of its attraction comes from it being so unorthodox in so many ways though.
    On the vocal mix it seemed like one of those things where it's there but it's so hard to pinpoint exactly. I totally didn't expect to struggle to hear the difference between all buttons vs bypass back to back. Isolated afterwards would be nice to reconfirm. It was very obvious in the beginning isolated and in series I assume, in the mix there was so much happening. For people looking for some of those specific 80's classic guitar tracks this might hold more value despite the limited controls, it's just really hard to justify in a modern gig rack for needing more elaborate gear just to control it in the chain.
    When you say £350, that sounds cheap. Until you find out the release year was 1979 and that translates to roughly 1060€ of today's money. But considering £1500 still being ~1700€, that's still remarkable.

    Thanks alot!
    I know Behringer has to be pure evil, but I looked into far more expensive units lately and quite a lot of them were also made in China, without one getting a glimpse into the factories.
    Regarding rip offs, thats a different story. When it comes to 50 years old gear, I'm fine with that, but I also remember the Mackie 8 bus copy, while it was quite recent and just months ago the Blue Yeti clone and that's not ok. Behringer have the funds and ressources to come up with original designs and there's plenty of vintage gear to copy, but maybe they like the hate?
    The unit is maybe cheap, but your review is priceless, as always.

    I heard this unit is thiner sounding & lower dB.
    I am thinking to buy one and add a BBE Sonic Maximizer (to at least enhance bass, like a mod).
    I also heard this unit can me 'modded' like other units. yes?
    all the pedals don't do it. and to use plugs, a computer-dependent (digital) system is needed.
    so far, this is it! wondering if a year or so later, owners are satisfied.
    You know, this unit 's circuitry 'could' be re-housed in a long pedal. Just sayin'.

      It’s called Love Me Unconditionally by Care Be, Levitaté and by Anya Gold.
      There is a version on UA-cam:

      @@jakobole Apple in my case. Yes. Contrary to Uli they have to my knowledge never harassed a journalist, filed a lawsuit against the same, tried copyright claim on brand names already in use or being a well know surname, building a business that's based on copying an existing mixer design, falsely claim that he constituted an organisation to get poor kids music instrument (and then not did what he promised) etc.
      Although yes, Apple has most likely done things I wouldn't agree on.
      If you like Uli's products, go for it. I've owned one many years ago but prefer to show my disliking to his kind of business idea and behaviour by choosing to not buy anything from his company.
