thank you for this, man! SUBSCRIBED! 🤙🏾
Hope it helps in your journey! Cheers!
4:10 this reminds me of the swirly guitars in the song Take A Picture by Filter
Thanks for sharing. The dimension D is one of my favorite sounding effects and I’m relieved to know that the plug-in sounds close enough to my ears.
Yeah! I live for the dimension d. Suuuch a useful tool.
I have the plugin and it's great! Never seen a hardware comparison though.
Yeah! Me either - that’s why I made the video.
Do you think the video title is decent?
The hardware is a little smoother and warm sounding on the higher frequencies but UAD did a great job! Very useful indeed!
Totally!
If you have a group harmonies try putting this job them. Totally makes it sit differently. It’s amazing.
i had the privilege of using one at Woodstock Studios in Melbourne; was asking the producer about it and he was like "watch this", slaps the vintage unit on a bass and my jaw just dropped.@@TheSteveKinney
@@exinated yeah. Vintage gear is just so much more of the “sound”.
Plugins just make life easy and recallable. At the cost of 1% difference in sound and losing the hairs standing up on your arm ha
The hardware just has THAT sound. The plugin is not as warm and 3-dimensional as the original. Just my opinion. Thanks for the good video.
I’m inclined to agree with you.
Cool comparison! The null test is a bit difficult with hardware, though, as chorus is a time based effect. And there might be unaccounted for sample delay in the loop as well.
Yah, I did my best to compensate with the built in I/o plugin, but it’s possible it’s not sample rate measurable.
Either way, it’s fun.
What one did you end up preferring?
@@TheSteveKinney The hardware is killing it, but the used market prices nowadays are insane. I'll probably end up with the Behringer/Klark clone. Let's see :)
@@JBrm from what I’ve come to know about behringer, legend has it, that their name translates to “lawsuit” or “patent infringement” in some countries.
I’d bet it sounds pretty good and the only thing keeping it from sounding “as good” as a real one is the 30-40 years of resistor burn in haha
I got one of these cause I love it.
Cheers mate!
If you need ears for it, i might have some. Just need to know the spacing of the screws on the side.
I built a clone of the DD years ago that had a sweet modded mix knob on the front and was only 1U. The chips in the clone were directly copied from original chips. The randomness of the algo will guarantee that the hardware wont even null with itself. Love this on background vocals, synths and some acoustic guitar parts. Just adds a nice beautiful space around the track that (imo) is not matched. The plugin for me was really close on both your unit and my clone... i would probably bet that the sound difference between 2 original DD's are probably as close as the plugin and the hardware unit. Great comparison!! Thanks for validating what i've been thinking for years.
1000% yes ha hallelujah! Can you DM on insta or email from my website?
I notice that randomness! It’s wild.
I REALLY found it interesting how the DD and UAD plug was really close on some sources and then noticeably different on others.
It’s funny cause - I knew the history of a ton of units, and this plugin was one that I didn’t know the history of - just kind of picked it in a bundle.
And fooled around with it a naturally came to the conclusion to use in BGV’s.
Then a buddy of mine told me how mike Shipley used to do that and I about crapped my pants in a Wayne’s world not worthy moment.. I came to the same conclusion as one of my musical hero’s ha but I know I’m not the only one!
It’s why I picked up this piece. Cause it’s more of a memento, too cool to not keep.. right along side my Dolby 361a’s ha
@@TheSteveKinney ill hit ya up tomorrow. I have a bunch of NOS ears that have magically seemed to fit a bunch of different 2U pieces.
the difference is so little you can't really tell what makes the difference, i have the plugin version and i love using it on vocal, pads, piano & keys, uad plugins are so amazing
For real!
Isn’t this insane?
I mean. Don’t get me wrong - it’s a clear difference in very specific situations but it’s SOO much smaller than I thought it’d be.
But I’m still stoked with this piece and love the inspiration of hitting the switch’s. Just fun ha 😅 can’t put a price on that.
Thanks for watching cheers!
@@TheSteveKinney there is always gonna be a difference, you cant replicate 100% of the hardware, because all the electrical stuff, but there is also no 2 hardwares that's sounds them same
The UAD is very close to the Roland unit, but the hardware unit has more weight to it. The UAD seems to remove some of the lower frequency info. I'd like to have that low end match better. I think boosting the low-mids just a little bit should do the trick to bring the UAD even closer to the Roland unit. Even though it's not the same pound for pound, and although of course I would want the real deal, I'd be more than happy with just the plugin.
It’s suppper close for sure.
I’d imagine there’s a lot of fold back that causes that missing low end thing.
Really impressed by some of UAD's modelling. The difference i could hear is that the hardware had that unmistakeble Roland chorus sound, smooth, vintage, sounds like the pitch warbles a bit. The plugin is excellent, sounds like a modern version, just doesn't have that vintage sound quite right.
There really is just something isn’t there.
It’s almost inaudible- but definitely perceivable.
Yes, i guess we know the sound so well after hearing it on countless records !@@TheSteveKinney
The hardware sounds a tad bit more open and airy compared to the plugin. I’m sure within a mix it wouldn’t really matter
100%
Hello, some will not be happy to hear that, but the plugins have made such a huge leap that the difference cannot be heard on a full Mix. As proof, I have the Neve 1073 DPX as well as the UAD plugin. Very very frankly sometimes, I come to prefer the plugin. OK Ok, I'm coming to you, it's only when I decide to replay my Complete Mix by the 1073 DPX, for the conversion that there, yes, I get something, for the money I had to pay, it is only then that the machine makes the real difference.
It’s crazy like .. there is always a difference. And it’s usually in favor of the hardware .. but it’s always like .03% better ha ha
But I do prefer hardware for speed of use as well as how inspirational it feels to me to use.
But man / I do love the convenience of these plugins! And I use them on every mix!
Near as makes no difference to my ears.
Totally!
I’ve tried out other hardware shootouts and I don’t always get these kind of results.
But this was awesome!
