Tenchi Muyo! - Opening Theme (Full Version with Intro)

- The theme used in the opening sequence of the anime has a short lead-in that isn't present in the official full length version of the song featured on the various soundtrack albums from the show. Every version of the full length song I've found abruptly starts without the lead-in. as far as I know, there is no official release featuring the full length song with the intro lead-in, so I created my own by splicing the intro from the anime version into the full length version.
This was once the best theme to hear coming home from school on toonami (cartoon Network).

You rarely hear such eastern sounding theme songs anymore. The eastern mysticism really made this show and song unique.

I'm only at episode 2 of the OVA, watching for the first time, and spaceship made of wood is very awesome. It feels so unique and refreshing compared to today's Sci-Fi.
I loved the hell out of that, a lot of characters are aliens but even then their culture was very clearly Japanese.
It's like how Doctor Who has Space British...

It was literally the first anime I ever bought on VHS back in 1994 at 13 years old, way before the Toonami mainstream happened. Now I'm 41, revisiting old memories, time flies kids, cherish it.

I remember listening to the theme for the first time after being in hospital for 2 weeks, that feeling of pure euphoria, everytime I listen to this it takes me back to that happy feeling.

@@leftwingdogwhistle awwww shucks. I had my gallbladder removed at the time so it was no biggie. But I remember watching it again and fully taking in the intro because I missed it so much!

Every time I hear this theme (or even watch the actual intro in one of the episodes that has it), my mind takes me back to the first time I saw Tenchi Muyo. My dad took me and my brothers to one of his friends place and while everyone was in the backyard or dining room, I was in the living room with the lights out, watching Tenchi Muyo on a big TV.

Jeez does time fly. Tenchi Muyo was one my favorite anime’s of all time. Ryoko will forever be a badass, she was the best character in the entire show. I had a massive crush on her when I was a younger.
Still have a crush on her. Yeah, she's not real but you can't help wishing that she was. My favorite female anime character hands down. After her is Project A-Ko.
What makes this even more beautiful is that we never really got this opening in the States (until toonami/adult swim aired the uncut tapes late night. And only for a limited time.)
The full intro, this version, was never to be found on any website, torrent, etc. The version we only had for years dropped you directly into the track, missing that important few seconds of otherworldly goodness.

Wow really? Something I guess to be said for having been a teen in the 90s, the VHS tapes had the full intro I can't believe they'd cut the intro beats before the track fully kicks in. Did they cut the character flashes with the drum beat from them? I've only owned the VHS tapes and the DVD set from '99 which kept the full intro

One of the best original anime openings that isn’t by a major Jpop band. It sounds very similar to the 80s Jazz band Hiroshima. This is more funky but it’s definitely in the same style.
Hiroshima is what comes to my mind as well.

Before Outlaw Star, Tenchi was my favorite anime back when I watched Toonami as a high-schooler. I still have the ‘kid friendly’ episodes of both animes on VHS, believe it or not.

I used to watch the show just for this song at the end (it was at the end credits in my experience). Something about this song let me process some emotions (this is 99 or 2000) and I was 11-12 - right when/before puberty hits and your brain undergoes those changes. I never thought I would ever come across this song again - and in this quality. I actually don't make it a thing to pour my heart out on UA-cam comments but this song just did that for me. Thank you for posting this.
i loved this franchise. still do. I miss the style/art of it. I miss the gang. XD such a time to be a live when it was airing for us in the NA. Thank you toonami for being there in my preteenage years. i'm 35 now. this is such a blast from the past. I still watch anime now and again but not as much back then. I still come back to old school anime, this is one of them.

Thank you for making a version with the lead-in from the anime and including that bit of information in the description! Way, way, way back in the day, back during the days of dial-up connections and WinMX/Limewire, I spent so many hours trying to find a version of it with this lead-in for one of my custom CDs and could only find official soundtrack versions without it. I thought I just had bad luck, but now I know that it was thrown in just for the anime intro.
I'm feeling nostalgic and created a playlist of all those songs from back in the day, so I'm going to download this and replace the one I had so I can hear it how I remember it. Thank you once again!

It's nice coming back to this from time to time. I remember hearing this when when i was ten.
Man this brings back memories,90s anime,toonami,cartoons,movies, the 90s and 2000s were an awesome time I do miss it,Ryoko is still my favorite character from Tenchi.
What's crazy is listening to this with headphones, and knowing what a midi track sounds like, then realizing just how much of this was in midi... yet it felt so organic and alive.
They never draw Ayeka in this quality every again and I will always be mad about it lol.

If I recall correctly, this theme never had an official name. Websites back in the day called it "Ballad of Ryo-ohki" so that's what I've always called it even though it's not a ballad. Lol.
I always heard it called ryo-ohki, but never understand why that would be its name. Wouldn't it make more sense to just call it Tenchi Muyo??
Great work putting this together. I think people have been sleeping on the ridiculously technical and brilliant bassline.

29 years old and I've decided to rewatch all of tenchi...I almost forgot 😢 but hearing the theme is all came flooding back all of toonami ...Tom and his drinking problem and swearing toonami was so under-rated 😂 and help us cope and none of you realized it.....search broken promises toonami if you dont believe me
