- Will liquid metal lower the temps on your MacBook enough to prevent throttling?
Get your liquid metal: amzn.to/2VAPmVq
Get your conformal coating: amzn.to/2LguAXf
Get your MacBook: amzn.to/2V3GF6m
Liquid metal is all the rage nowadays-even though it can potentially brick your computer-it has been proven to significantly lower temperatures on beefy PC builds. But does it work on a sissy MacBook fan? Snazzy Labs' Quinn Nelson tests it to find out!

Published this video in a 2:1 aspect ratio as an experiment. Looks pretty awesome on iPhone X and other ultra-wide displays. Should I keep publishing like this or go back to good ‘ol 16:9?
Snazzy Labs up to you though. I watch this on my 16:9 phone, and i dont even notice that this video is in 2:1
Faiz Maulana A. That’s kinda why I like it! Makes better use of space on modern smartphones and wider screens without looking too weird on 16:9. The only device that I think it looks pretty bad on is iPad.
I'd stick to 16:9
2:1 is the way to go! Didn't even realise that it is 16:9 Laptop, but its noticeable on my 18:9 phone!
Snazzy Labs Didn't even notice until I read the comments, so I'm fine with it.
Great video btw! Definitely didn't regret subbing
This was one of the best videos I’ve seen in a while. Quality, editing, content was all just great. You are great at what you do Quinn!!
Means a lot! Thanks, Corbyn!
Next video: will liquid metal improve the performance of the 2018 dyson vacuum?
Maximum S U C C
Nicely done. May have to try this now on my 2013...
Give it a shot!
did you ever try this on ur 2013? i have a 2013 15" curious to see the improvements but scared to try haha
Did you ever do it?
LOL you made an actual website! GENIUS.
he should continue using it instead of the generic amazon links tho. Way more funny.
A website... THATS BROUGHT YOU BY *S Q U A R E S P A C E*
Genius until it isn't kept up no leaves you just looking at a screen at says that, instead of a product from the video...
@@MARUKU but then he wouldn't make any money
@@StephenFasciani he could pretty easily. In fact he could make more money actually
You put the T-1000 inside a macbook
underrated comment
Thumbs UP for not selling out to Dyson. I *cannot* emphasize how much more respect and credibility it gives this channel, when literally EVERY other tech channel took the money from them. Cheers 💯
Jay's and Steve's parodies were good. haha
Totally agree
They could've at least tried not to all release the video at the same time :/
I cant see it as a problem.
Unbox RX, That was the point. Dyson wanted all the videos released at the same time, at the time of their corporate announcement.
Someone’s salty about the vacuum 😂
I'm out of the loop. What's the deal with the vacuum?
Peanut Turner just search dyson and you’ll see a plethora of paid ads
Many techtuber did a Dyson ads video.
I just really love cleaning.
I think snazzy is just mad he didn't get approached by Dyson but everyone else did
The Dyson vacuum shade was soooooo good
Nah, it kinda “sucked.” Har har har!
Love the aspect ratio change !
Robert Fish yessss!
As an electronics teacher and technician I got impressed by your technique and the way you describe and screen it so much. Thanks for heads up and everything. Stay safe pal!
Genuinely was waiting for this video, thanks!
I have another trick to help dissipate heat is to put thermal pad over CPU heat sink so it can use Macbook Pro backplate as a heat sink.
This is true! But I don’t like warm legs. 😂
I tried this with my wife’s laptop, it was way too hot when I put the pads near the cpu, but I moved them closer to the fans and heatsinks. It was a nice balance.
Yes
Props for Metal Gear Solid alert sound :)
Love the editing and lighting, exceptionally done video. Subscribed
Best video about thermal paste i ve ever seen
Wish i find this video sooner
THANKS For this great video
Its a really nice video, just for fun, can you do 1 year later of liquid metal? just to see if there is any corrosion?
Rodrick HD I like this idea!! Added to the list of future videos. Thanks. :)
One year from now we all have our hopes and dreams we can do this as well "risk-free" and with no corrosion (for longevity of the computer and a tiny (but not faulty) resale value in the end-of-use personally)
@@snazzy now you should do it :P
Please have an update tks
@@snazzy sooo, whatsup! hows your macbook doeing now?)
2:1 looks perfect on my 16:9 and 17:9 displays.
EposVox Glad to hear it! Thanks man.
I've done this too on my i9 MBP 2018 and it got really quiet. Temperatures dropped from 95°C to about 70°C. The 4 years old thermal compound already was dry. I've used some transparent nail polish to protect the cpu pins, works great so far.
Really nice video and nice results on the test.
Follow up! After two years, has the liquid metal kept your MacBook Pro cool? Also, did you have any issues with it spreading and shorting anything? Thx!
I wonder about that too. how is now?
Love the PhotonicInduction reference
Ah, you too!
Me tooooo!
eyyyyyyyyyyyy
I just bought some and this is very informative. Subbed
Thanks Snazzy for making your videos perfect for my iPhone 10 to fit perfectly for the notch not to be in the way
Wish i could meet u in person man.genius work dude.
Some day! 😊
thought he said prison
That Dyson jokes though
Noticed the aspect ratio immediately, looks awesome, hope more tech channels make videos this way.
Thanks!
Awesome vacuum comment seems like all the tech guys here in youtube were making commercials for the vacuum, was a little disappointed. You are the best man!!!
"No es algo bueno" I loved your Spanish!!!
Snazzy Magic for a Snazzy Video.
🎩
Great work buddy. Keep coming.
good work mate, great informative videos with no BS
Why is almost everyone joking about Dyson vacuums?
Cuz it SUCKS
Dyson sent their vacuum to pretty much every tech reviewer, and they had placed an embargo on it. When the embargo lifted pretty much anyone who is into tech got their YT home page filled with Dyson.
Nice marketing move, I must say!
LTT kinda done it right. they made a pretty interesting video about their studio, and just put the vacuum in it.
Now I get why Linus made such a big joke about using a vacuum in the desk pc cleanup video
Why are there 3 dies on the chip? I know one is the integrated graphics but whats the last one?
That’s the SSD.
Edit: oh... you mean the actual chip-not in AIDA-lol yes, the below comments are dead-on.
I'm talking about onboard the processor chip. Like there are three shiny squares on it, I know one of them is the central processing unit and the other is the graphical but i am wondering what the third one is
The GPU is integrated into the CPU die, this is the larger die of the 3. The one right next to the CPU die is the eDRAM used as L4 cache on Iris Graphics. The other one (with some spacing between it and the CPU die) is the PCH, which is integrated onto the CPU package since Haswell for mobile U and Y CPU variants.
The PCH is like the southbridge in older Intel platforms. The northbridge has been integrated inside the CPU die since the 1st generation Core i CPU.
The dies right next to each other is the iGPU and CPU for sure.. but I see no info about the third isolated die
piernov piernov Ah.. Thank you very much! Thats pretty interesting. Didn’t know the edram for the iris graphics was a little ship of its own.. I always thought the separate dies was the igpu and cpu
This is an awesome video. Thank you for making it!
Drill speed holes in the bottom cover of the case where the fans are to improve air flow to the fans. This will improve temperatures more than the risky liquid metal thermal paste. You can drill on a duplicate case cover bought from Amazon if you want to keep the original case cover pristine.
6:00 "for the first time ever it isn't throttling"
windows: *Throttles*
There is of course gradations in throttling. For example it certainly hits the base clock of 2.3GHz of the i5-7360U. And 3.2GHz might as well be the all-core maximum turbo. But yeah it's not "isn't throttling".
Mate he's actually shitting all over Austin Evans and i love it.
Who's Austin Evans?
Hey Austin this is Shit
Nah, I love Austin and he makes great videos. I’m just making fun at the type of integration. We’ve all gotta make money but I told my viewers a long time ago that I wouldn’t do entire sponsored videos masked as reviews. Just not my jam. No disrespect to those that do.
Snazzy Labs solid explaination 👊. You had my respect before but this pushed it past the limits I thought I had. Keep killing it Quinn.
I thought he was taking a shot at LTT, but that's the only video I saw pushing the Dyson.
Fantastic work man!
You can use Macs Fan Control to monitor temps of different cores/part of the computer as well as forcibly regulate fan speeds. If maxing the fans you likely could've dropped a bunch more C with the liquid metal, would've been good to run all fans (well in your case, fan) at max to note the temperature/performance differences.
I foresee a lot a broken laptops after those "liquid metal" videos by linus and you.
At ur own risk 😂😂
Cool vid, how about doing it on a 2013 MBA 13"??? :)
This Video is Simply the best I've seen. Very helpful I've been searching for stuff like this for my 2015 MacBook Pro. I'm willing to take the Risk.
Ola Victor Cheers! Good luck!
it's amazing that this is possible, definitely will do! thanks for another great video.
Cheers!
18:9 ratio is the future
16:9
this video is actually 2:1
2:1 is same as 18:9
I hate ultrawaide displays. you get so much less screen area
Looks good on iPhone x
The "no es algo bueno" sounds natural, sigue practicando tu español tienes futuro.
Gracias amigo. Saludos.
Snazzy Labs LDS?
That's really cool but I def am not confident enough to do something like that - sticking to thermal paste for now. Great vid.
I had to subscribe you make tech videos that are genuinely funny and entertaining 😱
You never mention: Do it at your own risk. lol
Risk is implied.
Hah, as a Kiwi, lovin' the shirt!
I can tell you put a lot of time into this video; really enjoyed it!
Thanks so much!
Would just any conformal coating work or does it have to be the exact one you have?
Redo the $350 hackintosh with ryzen 5 2400g
kifla impossible without a gpu mac os doesnt have suppprt for ryzen integrated graphics
Adam Musgrove There will probably be something, since the iGPU is Vega, which Mac supports
kifla do more research... Look at APUs

I was pleasantly surprised with a new snazzy labs vid this morning, thanks Quinn!
Thanks for watching!

I just ended scraping dried out grizzly liquid metal with razerblade
from my cpu radiator just after 6 months after application. I trusted
youtube videos praising its performance, nobody said it dry out and stop
working altogether after three months. Repasting usually takes 10
minutes, this took over an hour. Highly NOT recommended.
Regarding monitoring of temps on a Mac, check out iStat Menus. It gives you all sorts of details and whenever you hover over a stat it gives you a history chart
Great video. I like to know if there is any corrosion after all this time. Could you make a video about it?
dont void your warranty for that.. they can reject it!!!
I hate apple, but I still subbed. You are just that good.
Welcome!! :)
Hey Snazzy Labs! Do you still use this laptop, is it still liquid metaled, and how's it doing? I am thinking of doing this to my gf's 2018 MacBook Pro. Thanks!
I love your videos Quinn!!
Thank you!
I wish apple would just spend a tiny bit more to just solder their chips, it wouldn't matter to them if it makes it even harder to repair their devices, free performance and a better "out of the box" experience.
I tend to agree.
actually laptop cpus dont have an IHS, its direct die. and its not on apple to do that, its the chip maker.
Patent it, because boy, Apple will use liquid cooling in the future, and you can prevent them from stealing your idea.
I knew the video was going to be at a 2:1 aspect ratio, but then when I saw it this morning I didn't even notice. This would look pretty good on ultra-wide phone displays, and it doesn't really look that bad on desktops
Glad to hear it!
Gotta love that extreme Dyson test
Have been thinking about doing this recently too!
Hi Quinn. I hope you can answer this for me. I’m looking to build a Hackintosh for a similar budget but really don’t want to go over $900 (not including display, keyboard and mouse).
Are you able to recommend me/list some parts I should get such as the motherboard, RAM, GPU, PSU, CPU and the case. (Also anything else I have missed out). Just to note, I’m wanting at least 16GB RAM and 1TB of storage.
Furthermore, I have seen your AMD build and was wondering which route you would recommend me and why in terms of choosing AMD or Intel. I am wanting to get full functionality such as AirDrop and the AppStore etc.
I love your videos, keep it up!
Best,
Omid
Awesome liquid thermal paste video
Nice video. I put Conductonaut LM on just about anything I can. Under the CPU lid on all processors I have/friends have that can be delidded, on top of the CPU when using a cooler with a copper base plate, on GPUs with copper base plates on their coolers (which all the high end ones have), laptop heatsinks... It's awesome stuff and one little tube goes a very long way. Of course, the downside is that if you are not extremely careful it will short things out. Not for clumsy people but if you are willing to take care it can make crazy improvements to thermals.
It's always so satisfying to see the inside of a macbook
i have the 10th gen macbook pro 2020 13 inch and would appreciate a video fo step by step application of the thermal past. i couldnt find one on ifix it. i do not want tot damage the sensitive sensors and parts of my new macbook pro, but also want to apply the liquide metal thermal past.
Hey man, I wanna do this to my 2017 15' MacBook Pro, but I haven't found any disassembly guide online. ifixit which is were I usually find the guides, doesnt have one of the newest MacBook pros. Did you use one? if so, where did you get it from? keep up the good work, your videos are great. take it easy
would it be possible and beneficial to use liquid metal for cooling a 2017 12inch MacBook?
thank you for your video.
Will this work on iMacs too? Since they’re on vertical, I thought the liquid metal could leak out more easily
Could you do an instructional video about how to remove the heatsink for this machine?
Great video!
This was a badass video. Really some cool and interesting information. Thanks!
Thank YOU for watching. :)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
Is it safe to apply Liquid Metal ?
What material of my MacBook Heat sink ?
Is it Aluminium ?
do you think there is a need to repaste liquid metal more often, compared to the stock or a simpler paste ?
Awesome quality video. You refreshed my science after 20+ years 😜. On a serious note, I admire the content providers like yourselves; who are willing to jeopardize brand new Macbook Pros on a proof of concept. 👍 keep up the honest work.
Wonder if this would help with the throttling on the newer 2018 MacBook Pros!! Thoughts?
I think all thin and light laptops with dedicated graphics cards need to ship with Conductonaut pre applied from the factory since that is the only way they actually function to spec.
"No es bueno" the best part 🙌🏻
SL keeping it real always. The 2:1 aspect looks great on my 1080p 27in wide IPS.
hey thanks man i have a macbook pro mid 2015 retina display i got back in march 2016 is it still ok to use liquid metal for it? thanks!
Thank you sir. I think i’m gonna do a favor for my mbp 2015 🤩
Please do a revisit to this after 6 months of use. Let's see just how corroded the aluminium parts are and any solder degradation/separation.
How is the MacBook getting so hot? I own a 2018 Razer Blade 15 and after 4 hours of gaming, the aluminium of the chassis gets very hot, but CPU ID tells me that both the CPU and GPU are about 70°C, maybe 72°C.
Very awesome video 👍
This guy is my new favourite nerd! Subscribed!
Thanks for your great video. because of this video, I successfully applied liquid metal on my rMBP 2015 with confidence. There is one thing I should call out basing on my experience, after applying the liquid metal, please do a Cinebench test or other CPU intense program. this will build a lot of heat on cpu which help the liquid metal fill the gap.
@Snazzy Labs im planning to do some of these modifications you did! However would I need any specialised equipment to remove the covers found on the MacBook Pro 2016 w/o Touch Bar? And what would you recommend! Also I wouldn't buy anything from ifixit coz the shipping costs are insane as I live in Singapore.
I havent watched yet but I ordered some liquid metal last week, it arrives today. Curious to see what happens in your vid
Will liquid metal work on a 2011 late Macbook pro 13"? My mac has been runnning hot lately and Im quite sure I need to change the heat sink on it.
Do some controlled experiments on does the liquid metal really shift/slip out when you move the macbooks/laptops a lot.
thanks for the great video
