Cons of being Champion of the Raven Queen: to be continued
Pros: ZOOMIES!!!
"Actually..."
@@scottkfilgo yes they combines the armor power and the haste boots
Its been so long since I watched campaign one I've forgotten lot of details, but I will never forget "Take me instead you Raven Bitch!" It absolutely wrecked me. Liam O'brian ladies and gentlefolks.

The Raven Queen is the lawful neutral goddess of death. She doesn't kill people or long for mortals to die. She helps them move from one state of being to the next. She is the natural order of things and she hates anything that would twist or circumvent that natural order such as the undead.
But she´s mostly fine with actual resurrections, right?
@@johnyshadow yep. It's mostly perverting life beyond death that she has a problem with
@@johnyshadow She may have an issue if it was repeated resurrection to extend a life well beyond one's natural lifetime, but what she finds abhorrent is the perversion of death. Lichdom, creating undead, that kind of thing. She would despise Silas and Delilah.
@@acrefray And -Vec- uh, I mean the Whispered One.
I haven´t actually gotten far enough in CR1 to see if they have any interesting interactions.
Something Matt had to remind the party of on numerous occasions until it finally sank in, was The Raven Queen (aka Matron of Ravens) is not evil. The language around the table painted her in a very negative light until the message finally got across that dying isn't bad, it's just a part of a natural cycle and she is the personification of that transition from one side of life's veil to the other. Interestingly enough, it wasn't until Liam specifically started speaking about and to Her in less hostile ways did she actually once remove her mask to look at him face to face. She was described as being a pale, slender woman of otherworldly beauty, but with sad, lonely eyes. "Perhaps less lonely, now I have you." She said to him.
Also keep in mind that when the Matron usurped the former death god, all memory of her and the former god were erased. Even the other deities cannot recall the Matron's predecessor, nor the reasons for her ascension. For all we know, the previous god was "bent" in some way and we got a neutral replacement. Perhaps it was mortal vanity seeking immortality and that was the chair they chose to steal. We'll never know and she ain't telling
since it's taken from 4e's Dawn Wars cosmology, The Raven Queen usurped Nerull, who was a god of the dead as well as of death. He was neutral evil and very, very powerful, because he could hoard pretty much any soul not specifically dedicated to another god. When the Raven Queen arose, and took his mantles, the other gods specifically destroyed or cast out the mantle of The God of the Dead so no god could claim it.
that's all from 4e stuff and the Dawn War cosmology, anyways, but that's the origin of the Raven Queen in DnD.
Also I think it's ok to be afraid of or hate death. Perfectly natural reaction, especially since she, as the personification of death, was specifically stepping into and separating Vax from several interpersonal relationships. She was specifically taking him away, why not be mad about it.
I thought it was amazing on eXu: Calamity that we got the briefest of teases that the Matron of Ravens was a recent mortal that one of the PCs had interacted with before the Ascension.
I think one way to convey this is to call towards the grim reaper, rather than the devil.
Kind of a Spoiler talking about Vax's relationship with her in depth. Those events are probably gonna happen in the show and there are new viewers that might not want to see that until it happens in the show, like Adam how hes stated hes not watch C1 passed where the show left off, I agree explaining the Matron is an important thing but just be more candid with your words.
That monster is definitely not a beholder - Thank you, Legal
Yeah, the discount beholder cracks me up everytime 😂 I think it was a nod to K'varn, their first on-stream BBEG, in the Kraghammer arc that got cut out of the animation.
@@kasiamleczarska9078i’m pretty sure there was also a beholder fight in the sunken tomb episode of cr1 but i could be mistaken
This cluster of episodes is some of the best this show has been.
Without a doubt in my mind
Facts all 3 were legendary 🙌 my jaw was on the floor the whole time
That's literally been the story since s1 ep1. Each 3 episode drop is better than the last, and it promises to continue that way into the future, now far into the future.
How much you wanna bet you’ll be say that next week. Cause I said it last week and this week
This is what happens when a company listens to the creatives and the creatives love what they're creating, know what they're creating, literally lived (through RP) what they're creating!
“My name is Vax’ildan, and i’m the fastest rogue alive”
I was so happy they started off the episode with how Vex found Trinket. Even if I found myself crying as soon as I saw the big bear in the cage. This show.
I’m pretty sure it’s the same (or roughly the same) as the when the moment was described in the Kith and Kin book, so I’m also happy they included it.
Visually, it looks like they combined the Deathwalker's Ward and Boots of Haste.
I think so too. Makes sense so new viewers don’t have to remember the many items they all have (vax especially with his closet of cloaks, many daggers, and assorted magical clothing items)
@@juliamcdonough4175 I loved the memes of him trying to stealth while dragging around a luggage rack full of clothes :-D
@@juliamcdonough4175 This actually makes me sad because that means they have removed, in its entirety, the "Boots of Haste Story." Which sucks because the way that "Story" ends is truly heartbreaking and, in my opinion, very important to one of the characters.
@@ForeverDegenerate I agree, I think that it is a truly amazing story thread that added a lot to the campaign as it progressed. Unfortunately with a 25 min episode limit in 12 episode seasons they don’t have a ton of time and do have to shave things down to fit. That being they definitely know how to play with our heart strings so I have no doubt they will weave an amazing story, even if it’s not exactly like the stream.
Also his displacer cloak…it’s really an excellent melding of vex’s cavalcade of fuckery but they do it with a lot of characters as opposed to going through individual inventories it’s just shown physically, mentally and emotionally.
love how they switched the beholder( a dnd trademarked monster) into the new beasty
Yeah, that was really creative
it also felt verry aberrationy. The just standing there and weathering damage with the tentacles moving weirdly and strongly felt very anti-natural and like an aberration. I like it.
Why can't they use the beholder? Aren't they officially affiliated?
@@toonman5099 Well, if they used anything that was a licensed trademark owned by Wizards of the Coast (D&D) then WotC would be in their rights to demand a slice of the profits. Or even dictate re-writes of story lines or who knows what else? And it turns out Wizards have suddenly become real dicks about the OGL. Feel free to look that whole controversy up, it is way too long to explain here.
@@testfire3000 Ah, I see.

World Building Spoilers
The Matron of Ravens has the reputation as the goddess of death, but she’s primarily the goddess of the transition between life and death. The dead go elsewhere. Her job is to make sure that people die when they are supposed to, and aren’t necromanced back to undeath. It creates tension for a party that can revive their dead
It reminds me of Wee Jas, the Suloise goddess of Death, Magic, and Law in the World of Greyhawk. She's a guardian of the dead and prevents people from being reanimated as undead, unless it's done with the consent of the deceased and the remains are legally obtained. She was originally just the goddess of magic and law but when the civilization that worshiped her was hit with a massive magical disaster, the survivors started praying to her to protect the souls of the victims and she found herself becoming a death goddess as well.
Kelemvor is also a Non Evil God of Death who disapproves of Undeath and Necromancy and actively opposes it.
So basically she's a necromancers worst nightmare right? But if she's the goddess of transition between life and death why did she make Vax her champion in exchange for bringing back Vex? Doesn't that contradict her duties?
@@furionmax7824 She isn't against resurrection per say, Magic is part of the world, and people will come to her eventually. What she is against is the peversion of death aka necromancy, and people cheating fate.
Basically she's like; look a little wiggle room's cool, but we're going to meet at some point, If you try to dodge that appointment forever we'll have a problem.
@@furionmax7824 She commands these things called strings of fate, which were visualized. It's not explained just yet but there's a reason she chose vax.
In case you want to know, click read more for SPOILERS:
Vax is fate-touched, signified by the golden thread. He commands the strings of the fate of others around him and can bend them. He's one of the few that can change fate, and she's fascinated by that, so she wanted him as her champion from the start. He just offered her it on a silver platter.
Don't think you can call such a one sided fight like Vax had there a training montage 🤣
I'm almost mad at how good that jumpscare was
These episodes are a roller coaster of emotions. But I don’t think I’ll ever not get hyped about Vax going all hasted and fucking up that (copyright safe) beholder. Absolutely loooooved this episode.
I’ve been waiting ALL DAY for this reaction and then I got the notification and then I saw the title, and then I had to walk away from my computer for like 5 minutes. How dare you
I love how it seems like they're giving the vestiges some of the powers that the party had gotten from other magic items in the campaign. Like, the Deathwalker's Ward is making Vax all fast instead of his Boots of Haste.
Also, huzzah to Vax taking a level in Paladin!
That’s so Raven,
it’s a tomb under the sea
That’s so Raven
So mysterious to meee
This reminds me of:
Ruby of the seaaaa
She’s the one for meeee 😂😂
The armor is actually kind of perfect for death’s champion. It like death itself it makes the wearer nigh unstoppable and so fast they can strike from anywhere.
As for the necklace to keep Trinket in, can we call it what it is, it’s a pokéball!!!
In the campaign, Matt had to stop Laura from calling it that every episode, for legal reasons 😄
@Dark Jedi Knight
You can if you want Nintendo to sue you. 😜
Matron of Ravens is also the Goddess of Fate and Winter.
She has an ice castle like Elsa
YES the golden threads of Fate in the intro are finally making an appearance!
The Raven Queen is like Death in The Sandman. She is there with people when they die and makes sure they cross over.
"You got what everyone gets... a lifetime."
"That's so Raven" is perhaps the best fitting thumbnail phrase for an episode of anything I've ever seen😂😂
I was missing the town crier and the monk lmao, glad they're back.
This episode was ridiculous, the show just keeping getting better and better. The people working on this at titmouse are insanely talented.
In the campaign, Vax is Fate-Touched, and he'd tied his fate to his sister's (represented by the golden string). By swearing himself to the Matron of Ravens, he lost that connection and forged another one.
Should also be pointed out that in the shows recurring intro cinematic there is the gold strings of fate calling every character from Vox Machina.
@@iancampbell3931 I think Vax is the only one who doesn't notice it, and Scanlan is the only one who reaches out for it.
"Take me instead you Raven BITCH!" might be my favorite line of the entire campaign!

The barn scene, one of Vax'ildan's abilities as champion of the Raven Queen, is that that he is able to see death visions, whether they be last present or future.
i thought that specific scene at the barn looked like Sylas and Delilah flashback.
@@zippomage I think its Purvon's fate and its serving as foreshadowing for Vax stuff
@@zippomage it was not. Why would he be having flashbacks of Delilah and Sylas randomly?
@@zippomage It did look like that to me for a second at first, but it's not.
Spoiler about episode.
I can’t remember exactly but this is either before this episode or shortly after Liam’s mom passed from cancer. That line of his was very emotionally fueled from Liam about losing a loved one.
I fucking ADORE the sound design on that Beholder-thingy. It's such a perfect example of Sound That Should Not Happen.
In the initial campaign, Vax had Boots of Haste that he used quite a lot as the sort of core of his fighting style, so I like how they incorporated that into the Deathwalker's Ward in the show. A nice nod to people who watched campaign one.
So, one of the reasons the Matron wanted the job of god of death is probably because the original death god was an ass. Not one of the "kill all mortals and try again somewhere else" Betrayer Gods, but what little is known about her predecessor is not flattering.
Oops All Power Rangers
"In case you were wondering if shit rules..." genuinely got me lol.
I love them combining the Boots of Haste into the armor. I'm sure there's a metaphor there for the fact that even the Matron's own champion isn't fast enough to outrun fate/death.
I don’t know what kinda juice they were drinking for episode 4, 5, and 6 but they went HARD
16:30 I mean, World building is always good and will be handy for M9, but that shit will be needed long before we get to them lol, there's more god stuff in C1 than C2!
Did you notice, during the Calamity vision, the Everlight floating over Vax's shoulder?

Night recording is awesome, Jay is even sillier! So, when can that sexy Percy guy visit again?🤔 Asking for a friend...
Death was one of the biggest challenges CR faced transitioning from game to screen. Normal DND already has multiple spells available to bring folks back to life; Mercer’s home brewed rules added the challenge ritual that integrated role play and a dice roll and really spiced things up. In a scripted shows, it has be handled even more carefully or death loses all meaning.
I think they’ve shown successfully that there is magic available, but it is not guaranteed to work, and life and death have significant cost.
We'll see how that goes when we get to keyfish. Probably change it soe she just gets really badly wounded
@@joelmills4304 honestly, the best way they can probably do it that still retains yhe comedy and doesn't destroy tension would be a funny flashback, like when she killed that Dwarf with lava.
@@crimsoneclipse0618 yeah, they could make Keyfish some kind of flashback to her druidic training, and lessen the consequences of the splat
"What is that?! Do you know what that is?" Their version of a Beholder. Welcome. 🤣
'tis not a Pokeball... it's a Trinket trinket.
I love the ending, the King In Yellow was my very first starter pokemon :)
I believe the reason she chose the god of death is she worked out that Death has mortality in it's very being, so, the God of death... dies it fits and thus her ritual worked better
Welp, adding "Fat Dragonnnnn....Yum!" to the repertoire. Thanks friends.
Call me crazy, but if I had to choose which deity to serve as a champion, I'd choose the goddess of death.
Who could stop me when Death itself is in my corner?

Pike: "Cleric!", Yellow Ranger.
Vax: "Rogue!", Black Ranger.
Vex: "Ranger!" Blue Ranger.
Keyleth: "Druid!" Green Ranger.
Scanlan: "Bard!" Purple Ranger.
Percy: "Fighter (Gunslinger?!" White Ranger.
Keep this going. What do yall think their Zords would be?
There's a barbarian subclass called Path of the Totem Warrior that I'm 100% reskinning to be like a Power Ranger morphing when they rage.
How many Greater Restorations does he have? As many as he needs
Yep, seems like they nerfed petrification a bit for the show. Kinda established that when Grog was frozen and Pike called out in a very calm way that he wasn't dead, JUST petrified. What's really amazing with all those tentacles whipping around, is that no one got hit and broken when they were stone. That's the real horror of being petrified, the potential of being shattered before anyone can un-petrify you.
“That’s so Raven” how dare you
I don't think a pun has ever offended me.
@@ultrabigfella this one definitely offended me lmao
13:14 He likes bathtubs though.
I had that EXACT same thought. 😁
The campaign, the eye monster lived in the temple (They fought it before the armor actually) and it was a Beholder, but Beholders aren't included in the WotC SRD/OGL. So they had to do something more unique. But, hence the petrification (which is a beholder power).
Also in the campaign, the Deathwalker's Ward gave damage resistance and flight, not speed (Vax had Boost of Haste) but combining them is a GREAT idea. And while everyone got their own vestiges, I think that this is (well about 10-15 episodes later when he accepted the Raven Queen/Matron of Ravens more fully) Vax basically became the protagonist lol. Not that there's a problem with that, and Liam would deny it (And they all had their time to shine), but it seemed that a lot of story focused on Vax and the Raven Queen.
Matt does describe more and more of the calamity (his original story was a bit vaguer and he tightened it up) but the vision of it here is definitely more inspired by the EU:Calamity series I feel.
I really like that Zahra was more of an antagonist turned friend, because in the campaign that was kind of how it was meant to go but it happened much faster. And I like that she gives Vex the pokeball (in the campaign they find it with the Vestige armor and it has Purvaan's wolf pet in it, though I'll miss that NPC).
I know Travis watches reactions, I sincerely hope this is one of those channels.
these three new episodes were one hell of a roller-coaster ride

One of the most sad and powerful... Well IMHO by far the most sad, and Campaign affecting, character growth instigating, and hard to come to terms with party outcomes as it weaves itself has had it's triggering event. Had this not happened, the "happy ending" of the campaign might have still been happy, but much less meaningful. Plot armor isn't in effect. The way you define "happy ending" just doesn't always mean and they ALL lived happily ever after.
I’m assuming that The Mother of Ravens gets paid the same way as other gods of death. Two coins at a time.

It’s so fun trying to identify any and all dnd goodies this episode. Vax’s broken movement speed from the Ward + Boots of Haste. Which also gives us “Dagger, Dagger, Dagger 🗡️ “ now. Uncanny Dodging all the tentacles. And then we really get to see Sharpshooter in action with that dagger pinpoint to the eye. The undead in Vax's visions are the Raven Queen trying to tell him about the return of her enemy, Vecna. Whether that's Season 3 or Season 4, that's when shit is going to get real.
