I love the difference in tone between reacters who know about D&D stuff and reacters who don’t.
D&D Players: Oh hey Keyleth got her fire elemental form! Neat.
Non D&D Players: OH MY GOD SHE’S ON FIRE IS SHE OKAY WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!
and Critters that know Marisha's inspiration for her character: She unlocked the Avatar State (also Kiki's mom is Avatar Korra, atleast the voice is)
Me, someone who got back into D&D by playing a Druid because Keyleth is my favorite: OH MY GOD SHE’S A FIRE ELEMENTAL AND SHES’S KICKING ASS YES QUEEN
@@TheRubberDuck77 holy smokes right on!
Matt and Marisha had to be fangirling super hard with Janet Varney playing Kiki's mom
Full circle.
They’ve also filmed stuff before. Janet was hosting a Escape Room game show on Geek and Sundry when Campaign 1 was happening, and the CR cast appeared as guests. Marisha was fan-girling HARD lol
They have worked with her before. Janet used to do the escape room series for geek and sundry and Matt, Laura, Travis, and I think marisha did an appearance on that show
Not lost on me that they asked her to voice after obviously basing KiKi on Avatar.
Another big fan is the little girl playing young Kiki. She's Sam's daughter and she loves the Legend of Korra.
It's fun dealing with Elementals in the live game because she speaks primordial (I think) when she's in that form so nobody understands her, it just sounds like crackling fire (when Matt does it) or monster noises (when Marisha does it), it's so funny.
Minor spoilers for C1 it's a fun anecdote from early Briarwood arc that didn't make it to the show:
Keyleth summoned a water elemental (I think) to guard the Greyskull Keep while they were gone and in order to give it instructions she had to talk to it in it's language, so Taliesin (Percy) filled his mouth with water and gargled perfectly in rhythm to when she talked, it's very funny.
You bringing up the Ring of Fire Protection _broke_ me. 😭😂 Fjord will never live it down.
I was literally coming here to say the same thing hahaha
Genuinely while I love how beautiful this episode is, Craven Edge’s sigh after getting interrupted by Grog’s fart just breaks me everytime.😂
Just such a shame they didn't have the whole bacon conversation.
I miss Bacon.
Honestly, the live-stream version was funnier, if only because Matt was trying to keep a straight face as the evil sword.
Here it is:

The golden threads I think are supposed to represent the threads of Fate; the Matron of Ravens is a goddess of fate as well as death. And the idea is that VM are fated to be the heroes that save Tal'dorei.
I love that you said that basically, Keyleths family are basically Avatars. Key's mom was voiced by the actress that did the voice of Avatar Kora!
I know Travis watches reactions to the show, so I hope he sees this for the mention of the Ring of Fire Resistance haha 8:54
Apparently Travis was watching pReview'd even before they did Vox Machina.
@@foulrot really?!? cool
Same. I hope he Fjord's on over.
"I don't think she's (Kiki's Mom) gonna be back Jay."
Interesting argument Adam. I think you've got a leg to stand on.
4:40 Lol, Jay trying to set up a throwaway joke but Adam making a realization because of it
It is everyone’s fate being tied to something. At least that’s my favorite explanation people put together. Hence why Vax’s went from Vex to the raven queen.
I had this thought exactly! Adam figured out the Golden Thread of Fate, and Jay's like, "I was just goofin'." 🤣
In the story, Circle of Moon Druids can learn to shapeshift into Elementals. here she learned in mastering fire to become a Fire Elemental. This truely isn't even her final form, and yes. She is beginning to believe, in her self. You'll start to see a more confident Kiki after this.
She's practically a god now.
@@Starsaber222 yeah. those are cursed words
Fun fact: Keyleth's mama is voiced by Janet Varney aka Avatar Korra in Legend of Korra, and little Keyleth was voiced by Sam Riegel (Scanlan)'s youngest kiddo.
This episode is the one that finally made me cry. I was holding it back and holding it back and this finally broke me. Of course in the Campaign, the "I have passed through fire" was a bit more impactful, but I think the way they did it in this really captured the whole vibe.
I was so sad when I didn’t see Patrick Rothfuss as Kerrek on IMDB :( What are we supposed to do without our Karebear?
Season 3 I’m willing to bet
@@jamesmorehouse9896 It's entirely possible. I hope so. But I could also see them just sort of glossing over his involvement /:
@@elfbreath 1. He's a busy man.
2. He's a writer, not a voice actor.
3. I doubt they could have fit Kare in season 2, given how dense everything is.
4. If he shows up at all, he will likely be voiced by someone other than Rothfuss, and I would bet they're saving him for [redacted], which doesn't occur until [redacted], after [redacted], toward the end of [redacted], which they likely won't get to until [redacted]
@@minusxero Was thinking this too xD He’s not a very busy writer, surely he can pick up voice acting as a side gig! (
When I saw Vilya. I was freaking out. It was so bittersweet, knowing what happens.
And they had her say "You will always be with me"
THE AUDACITY
Have you heard about the Traveler, good sir? 😈
Nice Ring of Fire Protection joke. I’m sure Travis felt that one.
Fun fact: this episode is basically a retelling of "Cindergrove Revisited" from the original VM campaign.
Only, this episode is way better. It became a proper Keyleth episode, one that she deserved.
That, and some new wrinkles thrown in, like Allura and Kima being there, and it's done in a justified manner.
Say hello to Keyleth's fire elemental form 🔥🤩
Also, pretty sure the golden thread does symbolize the Raven Queen's thread 😛
Yup it does. When discussing the opening credits of the first season on one of the streams, one of the cast (I think Matt) said that the golden threads represent the threads of fate.
8:54 Saying that, knowing Travis watches these xD
12:28 Matt and Marisha came up with a mix of Druid Circles systeme for Kiki. At 10th Level, Circle of the Moon Druid can use they wildshape ability to become elementals, but Matt tied her elemental wildshapes to her Aramenté. Basically, once she complete her other Aramenté, she will be able to wildshape into all 4 of them.
"Do you have a female setting...can I call you Bacon?"
This is a very small thing in the awesome that is this show but... I found myself getting really choked up by the opening to this one and not really for story reasons. Sure Keyleth's mom leaving is touching and all but... but they got Janet Varney for this. Close your eyes and that could so easily be Korra talking to future generations of air benders. As we might never get the chance to actually see that in canon really appreciate Critical Role throwing us that particular bone. Plus you just know that Marisha didn't stop smiling for a week after they locked in that particular bit of casting!
the ring of fire resistance joke fuckin sent me. Well played sir well played
Kind of a spoiler:
To note on Vax being dismissive of Keyleth in the beginning of this episode, Vax admitted to Keyleth he loved her when he though they were going to die, and once they didn’t he put those feelings away. Which is what Liam described Vax doing in the Campaign Wrap-Up. Also, you know, his sister almost died and he’s having his own crisis now lol.
Yeah, Vax was super depressed for a good long time in game
I think it’s safe to say that those feelings are finally resurfacing, with the fear that he was going to lose her, and yet she came back.
And _she brought a smile back to his face._
Because after this episode, he’s much kinder to her again. He even called her “Kiki” again.
To be fair, the ability to wildshape into an elemental is specific to the Circle of the Moon subclass.
Keyleth is my favourite VM character. I love every moment she gets to shine. I have a tattoo that says "I have passed through fire" and I got really excited when that was referenced in the episode
no wonder keyleth is powerful her mom is the avatar and her father is the hulk
This episode is every D&D player's dream......to be able to flesh out their backstory completely and have it work into the campaign so well that the pay off is just simply magical. Honestly makes the 3 days you spend making it up worth it
Matthew Mercer is a great DM for really doing this! it's not only the series.
So happy you now know the Raven Queen cameo on the intro song since season one. And Druids are just awesome. No outside items needed.
Did anyone else hear the line "I was made to pass through fire" and just cry bc you remembered Patrick Rothfuss's (Ker's) gift/letter? Just me? okay. :)
Robbie Daymond as Cerkonos the leader of the fire Ashari!
Ah, that explains the lowkey sexy 😂
Holy shit, I can’t believe you made the Ring of Fire Protection joke
She shapeshifted into a big ole fire elemental and it was cool 😎
I can't praise the music enough
Honestly, every episode is a joy, just for the new tunes
As a moon druid, Keyleth can shapechange into not just animals, but now elementals as well. She went full flame lord
Highly recommend looking up Grog and Craven Edge's Outhouse conversation from the stream, it's so much better (just because there's time to really lean into the joke), I was crying laughing.
You guys caught the yellow line in the intro, but not that it starts with a raven...
At 10th level, druids' "wild shape" ability can include elemental forms.
Oh that Damn Ring of Fire Protection........Fjord even gets to hear about it BEFORE his campaign...
Is it just me or did Keyleth get hotter? 😉
that simply isn't possible!
8:55 Somewhere far far in the distance in an orphanage in Port Damali on the Menagerie Coast, For a minute a young Fjord Stone feels sad and grumpy for no explicable reason, then continues on with his day.
Only Circle of the Moon Druids can turn into Elementals. (Which is one of the many reasons Circle of the Moon is way OP compared to other subclasses).
13:41... yes and no, they are Goliaths, like Grog... That is all I'm going to say, for this episode.
Keyleth is a Circle of the Moon Druid. At level 10 they get the ability to use their Wild Shapes to turn into an Wind, Fire, Earth or Water Elemental. Soooooo you know she's got at least 2 more power ups!!!
I think the yellow lines are the strands of faith linking the party together... The Matron Mother is not only a god of death, but also faith.
Spoiler for S2E4:
I think the scene in e4 where the raven queen severs the thread linking Vex and Vax, symbolizes that his faith no longer is linked to his sister. Later in the episode we see him tethered to his new patron.
the gold line is the Thread of Fate. the Raven Queen goddess of fate and death. when she severed Vax's fate with his sister and bound him to herself as a servant.
The fire plane adventure would have been good, a there was some epic gaming in those episodes, but we know everything has to be cut back...and at least the activation for the broom isn't hhutzle plah...
They go back to it later in the series so they may return in Season 3
Moon druids are the best. That option to turn into something elemental is just *chef's kiss*
the episodes just keep getting better. Metapidgeon (the best name btw) can’t stop winniny
I love when Adam looks at Jay with his mouth agape or smiling and Jay refuses to look over.
I hope you watch Omnimedia1 reaction to this episode. He mentions Adam in it b
I cried a lot during this episode. So good.
The fact that Grog made a sentient sword sigh is hilarious to me
The canonical broom acquisition is much better.
Aaaaaaahhhh. That is all (part 5)
4:01 It's funny that you say that, seeing as how Keyleth's Mom is voice acted by Janet Varney AKA FREAKING AVATAR KORRA!
KIkI is a circle of the Moon Druiid.
The Fire Elemental is a Shapechange Ability
Elemental Wild Shape
At 10th level, you can expend two uses of Wild Shape at the same time to transform into an air elemental, an earth elemental, a fire elemental, or a water elemental.
Druids can become elementals with the right subclass
It’s freaking perfect that got an Avatar (Janet Varney aka Korra) to voice Keyleth’s mom!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Omg, first view! Love you guys, a pick me up for the day every video. Hugs for Jay and all the vengeances for Adam :P
Keyleth's mom in this episode was voiced by the same actress that did Korra's voice (Janet Varney). It was supposed to be an Avatar tribute/homage and I think it did it so rather well
Grog going boom boom while talking to Craven Edge in the campaign was incredibly hilarious
Keyleths a moon druid who gain elemental forms at higher levels
Moon Druids can turn into any of the 4 types of elemental with their wildshape ability at level 10.
are you body-shaming dragons?
Lol it’s a reference to how much Jay loves the big fat dragon from the Dungeons and Dragons trailer they did the other day
Hey Jay you want to play again? Pro DM here, I'll find a spot. You could totally play a druid. XD
Hail The Tempest.
Talk about an upgrade kiki be summoning scarlet witch, avatar and phoenix force vibes. Also keema referencing and aelven city is giving me foreshadowing that the twins might meet theie dad again, rippley always making deals with the major villians ala loki, grog talking to kravenedge yeah that castlevania style trial of mastery is coming soon.
Critters, tell me: was the Raven Queen based on Kelemvor? Hates the undead, usurped the prior god of death, Lawful and not evil, etc.
11:45 that soundtrack tho
You make jokes Adam, but seriously, late night Preview'd is best Preview'd 🤣
Kiki turning in elementals is part of her specific subclass, not all of them can do it.
To answer Adam's question: That ability is the Elemental Wildshape of Moon druids, which Keyleth is. 🙂
Fun Fact: Marisha did actually base her character on being an air bender, hince air ashari... ALSO the person that voices Keyleth's mom is Janet Varney, she voiced Avatar Korra, and since she is "bending" all the elements in that scene... it is canon, Keyleth's mom Vilya is in fact an avatar.... not to mention talk about coming full circle.... oh and young Keyleth is of course voiced by Sam's daughter.
It's weird that they had already been here in the campaign and had more emotional connection, even seen Thordak in the fire plane. But it works like this. Though Allura and Lady Kima! They kind of just skip over how well they know Vox Machina, and just confirm the relationship (which I don't believe was ever actually set in stone, but hinted at, in c1), because in the campaign they were actually close allies while in season 1 the council (and Allura, who was literally their patron at several points and Kima was an NPC companion) kind of looked down on them.
I do like the shift in how they reveal the broom, because in the campaign Vex stole it from a guest PC, and honestly it didn't do her character any good rep and the guest player was...not the greatest human so cutting him out makes a lot of sense.
The secret of Vox Machina: it is a fantastic animated story based on a D&D campaign, not a D&D game made into an animated show. Those folks who have produced that new D&D movie are going to learn that lesson. The whole mess with the OGL with Hasbro and WoC is because they all think that the tool that produced the Critical Role content is greater than their creators. I am a Critter fan not because of D&D, but because these talented folk made me cry and cheer watching them playing a game. As Stephen King said: Its about the Story stupid.
May I just say I hope the fat dragon comments never stop
Vilia is voiced by the actor who played Avatar Korra
Adam saying, "we're basically all avatars here." when Keyleth's mom is voiced by Janet Varney so is actually an Avatar.
BIDET!
Also I'm sure you've looked it up by now @preview'd but Keyleth is a Moon Druid and thus has elemental wild shapes :)
I think this episode was a fun way to represent what higher level Moon Druids can do, especially with their ability to Wild Shape into Elementals.
The gold threads in the intro/episode 4 are Threads of Fate(iirc). So essentially, Vax's fate was tied to Vex, and now it's tied to the Matron.
Grog talking to craven edge while in an outhouse was one of the most hilarious scenes in the campaign. The jokes travis and Sam made and Matt playing into craven edges exasperation was so good.
Okay I snorted my drink and had a cough-laugh attack at the Ragnaros joke. 😂
Level 10 circle of the mood druids can use their wildshape to turn into elementals. Hands down one of the most powerful subclasses
I love that Kiki gets to say Matt's signature " We (You) Can certainly try."
I think it's early 10s (12?) where they can wild shape into elementals.
I always looked at the golden thread in the beginning as Matt, the DM, the fate that drew them all together. It calls to each of them, then joins together and shoots into the sky to become the Critical Role logo, which is also a D20, and the decider of fate in the game of dungeons and dragons.
Who else immediately thought that Kiki unlocked the Avatar State when she turned into the fire elemental??
You know, when you make a cursed sword sigh at you, you are definitely winning in life.
It's called elemental wildshape. Moon druids get it at level 10.
I think the yellow lines in the intro and that you saw the Raven Queen cutting between Vax and Vex then linking her to Vax are a representation of the Threads of Fate.
Lol "everything was fine until the fire plane attacked" got me
The Goldens lines in the intro, atleast I believe are threads of fate, bringing all these misfits together to create the D&D party we all know and love
How happy is lashy over the m9 news?
The thumbnail text *chef's kiss* 👨🍳😘
If you want I’ll dm a game for you all. I know no promotion but I can send my Chanel if you want to see
Oh come on, you didn’t include the reaction to the broom!?
The Golden Threads of Fate.
The Matron of Ravens is the goddess of death and fate.
a avatar and captain planet reference
Just imagine when we get to re meet Keyleth's mom inside of the other show :)
