Just a small fact: dragon breath type depends on the color of the dragon. Brimsythe from season 1 was blue dragon who had lightning breath. Vorugal the white dragon has ice, Umbrasyl the black dragon has acid, Raishan the green dragon has poison and Thordak the red dragon has fire

    • @liamwarner5749

Adding to this the good counterparts are metallic copper, brass, bronze, silver and gold who match up weapon to weapon e.g. gold and red use fire. I believe there are also neutral gem dragons and a whole heap of other rarer types like deep dragons and some forgotten ones that only showed up occasionally in the games history like purple, orange or brown.

@@internetfriend6701 There are some fun details buried in the game lore. Back in first ed fireballs went round corners and lightning bolts richoched. Found that one out by nearly killing myself with a lightining bolt that bounced back onto me then bounced off the wall behind me. Went from full health to 1 hp thanks to my own spell. Extra annoyance was there wasn't enough length left in it to hit the enemies a third time.

@@liamwarner5749They don't match up weapon to weapon. Gold and Brass (the typically agreed upon counterparts to Red and Green dragons) both have Fire, with Brass also having a Sleep breath
Well, unless you want to bring in Steel Dragons (whoch do have poison), but I feel like discussions around Metallic and Chromatic dragons tend to be about Red/Blue/Green/White/Black and Gold/Bronze/Brass/Silver/Copper

In the original Critical Role, this was the WILDEST thing, because Matthew Mercer was willing to tear down an entire city and disrupt the setting for the plot, which was both impressive and terrifying. We had no idea how it would continue from there

Matt also revealed the plan was to kill Gilmour during this raid. If the party had immediately fled the city like Matt thought they would, Gilmour would have died. But instead, they went to his shop and were able to save him. These are the kinds of moments that make DnD so special.

The BTS stuff the animators talk about how they took the 3D dragons and applied so much hand-painted accents and details. That's why they look so much better. They also went way into more sophisticate lighting and atmospherics (like the embers, snowflakes and ashes flying through the air), all of which are hand-painted. The animation is so much better this season. Season 3 should come out early next year some time, and Campaign 2, The Mighty Nein, is already at storyboards. Sam Riegel, (scanlon) has said that he'd like to see at least one more season (4) if not 5 altogether to finish out the major arcs in Vox Machina.

Honestly 5 seasons seems most likely with all of the story that they have to push and condense into animated form. The Mighty Nein I can see being 6 seasons, and if they ever do Bells Hells I can see them currently having 3-4 seasons with a 4-5th beginning now with the current arc they just started. One can only hope though. 🙏🤞

Others have already explained the other type of dragons (color and damage type), but also, Brimscythe from season 1 was a Young to Adult dragon. Dragons get stronger the older they are, and the four that attacked Emon are all Ancient dragons. They are way stronger than Brimscythe was. Dragons go from Wyrmling (0-5 years), Young (6-100), Adult (101-800), Ancient (801-1200), then Greatwyrm (1201+ and some other requirements). Just to give some context on why this is an even bigger deal than just it being four dragons.

One Dragon was bad enough, but now there are four as we enter the arc of the Chroma Conclave. Each Dragon's colour identifies its power; Umbrasyl is the acidic black dragon (voiced by the DM, Matthew Mercer) the Hope Devourer, Raishan is the toxic green dragon (voiced by Cree Summer) the Diseased Deceiver, Vorugal is the white ice dragon (voiced by Vax's player and VA, Liam O'Brien) the Frigid Doom and Thordak is the red dragon of fire (voiced by Lance Reddick) the Cinder King. Their destruction of Emon set the tone of how powerful they are compared to Vox Machina, who could only be put in an escape situation as the dragons - who in Exandria were one of the first beings of existence - claimed the city. Thordak was in fact hinted in the early campaign, and a bit in Season 1 talking about the red dragon, the show didn't cover it but a great shadow in the Fire Plane the group hid from was the dragon, so on the table it was a 'is that what that was?' moment.
Oh trust me, they were shitting themselves, not all on the table are as experienced as you'd expect. The bar was set to be high when Grog's player Travis rolled 19 to attack, and missed, 22 barely hit. Trinket was frozen to unconsciousness and they only survived the assault on Greyskull because Thordak ordered Vorugal away, only 25 refugees survived the night. Of course more stuff happened, Percy and Grog fought over a wishing skull, Gilmore's was being looted, stuff like that the show trimmed off to make the story more linear.
Keyleth's spell 'Pass through Trees' does come in handy for the escape, but it means now the group have to seek out a means to defeat the Conclave, which leads them to Religious hub Vassalheim...who are kinda dicks ngl they're often about not helping more than they are with helping. Still it leads them to one of the twins' old clubs, the Clasp, and Grog faces a dawn marshal of one of the gods, Kord, the Stormlord. We have word of what tools we need though, the Vestiges of Divergence, weapons of godly champions during the Calamity (a war between gods hundreds of years ago).
The Black Powder dealer is one of Matt Mercer's more famous NPCs in Critical Role as well, he put his all into the performance, bit more bargaining involved than what was in the show of course.
Still, you'll find this arc to have more expressed focus on Vax, similarly to how the last season focused more on Percy, something is seen among all the death, but only for his eyes.

The Mighty Nein is actually considered to be a more popular campaign than Vox Machina. It starts off with the characters meeting for the first time. The character dynamics and development into a found family is the best I've ever seen in any media. Not to mention that they just brought them back for a liveshow oneshot that takes place DURING campaign 3. I only hope that they get greenlit for Bells Hells once its over because that'd just make a perfect trilogy with everything thats been happening in the current campaign.

There was a bunch of stuff in the campaign that made the arrival of the Chroma Conclave even more buck-wild than it is here.
First is the fact that it happened much later in their story. The first season of the show picks up basically 3 years into the campaign (between their home game and the early stuff of the live stream). They were much more integrated and attached to Emon as a setting, it was their home. Seeing it destroyed was devastating for the players.
The second, even more wild thing is that the players convinced themselves at first that the dragons attacking was Vox Machina’s fault. That was never Matt’s intention with the story he was telling. But the players had re-raided the lair of the dragon from season one out of pure greed, and in the early fog of war they were heartbroken because they thought the dragons attacked out of retaliation for that.

Victor was a fan favourite NPC from the campaign, they had to get him in there somewhere😂
The best thing is that a) Matt came up with this character on the spot b) the way he _immediately_ fell into this voice and the physicality of this character was just absolutely hilarious in the moment and c) Victor's character design in the show (while, yes, looking somewhat like Bumi) is actually based on Matt's own cosplay of him. They are big on Halloween over at Critical Role and always come dressed up for their Halloween episode. One year they all dressed up as various NPCs Matt has played and he himself chose Victor. That same year Laura (Vex) and her husband Travis (Grog) were cosplaying the Briarwoods and their cosplay actually also influenced the Briarwoods final design in the show.

Just an fyi, there is also a maturity hierarchy to dragons. Wyrmling < Young < Adult < Ancient. The Blue one they took out was only an Adult. These are all at least Ancient. Thordak is like a Mythical Uber Dragon.

The thing osisu was touching on for Keyleth was that she’s the only full elf in the party, and a young one. Full elves live to be around 750 years old. The only ones who can get even close are the gnomes pike and scanlan who can get to about 350. The twins are half elves so they’ve got a solid 150, everyone else will cap at 100 if they’re lucky.
On top of that she’s a Druid. When you become arch Druid, which is what she’s training for, she will age at 1/10th the rate. Meaning she caps put at around 7500 year old life span. She will outlive civilizations.

Keyleth is a half elf too (with both her parents being half elves so its a bit weird if you dont have the direct D&D game, but its visible when comparing her ears to the twins and to elven NPCs), but the arch druid slow aging still applies

I never watched anything beside the show itself, when the sphynx mentioned keyleth fears, does she mean it literally? like Keyleth will live waaay longer than others through age, cause I don't think it was fears about the dragons or being killed, it seemed like keyleth knows from the start that she will live longer but doesn't want to accept it

    • @richardhealy
      @richardhealy 11 місяців тому +2

Its a druid thing, by about level 20 they become functionaly immortal more or less.
Like they can still be killed, but it would take a lot, and they don't die of old age, poison and can heal and buff second only to clerics.
So yeah, its kind of meant that way: will you fail to meet the challenge or live so long as to see all you love die before you suceed. The Sphinx new exactly how to press on the bruise of Keyleth's insecurities.

Yes once Keyleth becomes a powerful enough druid her aging will slow by tenfold, since she's already a long-lived half elf she could last 2000 years. So here the sphinx is asking if its worse that she attempt her Aramente and fail, or keep putting it off so long that all her friends die without seeing her achieve it.

I kinda hate how they portrayed the council of Vasselheim. Here they're like "Oh wow, that sucks. Well, fuck off now." while in the actual campaign their motivation makes more sense. They considered helping, but sending forces out would leave the city vulnerable. And being the oldest city and archive of knowledge in the world, they couldn't afford that. So they started preparing while Vox Machina were gathering allies.

    • @hhylobates4098
      @hhylobates4098 11 місяців тому

Yes they had a very logical argument of "We could be the dragons next target anyway so we should prepare our city first." Notice they made the sphinx seem like a better ally by giving information but in the game she had a similar response of refusing to send the Slayers Take to help, while when they asked the Platinum Sanctuary for aid they were assigned one of their best champions to join their cause.

the older a dragon is the more powerful it is, so being an adult dragon is NOTHING compared to an Ancient

also reminder that gods exist in this world and created it and all the mortal races on it, gifted them magic both holy magic like pike’s and magic like scanlan’s or a wizard’s. this world has a history and is it not just “vox machina is the only story on it”.
“ziggurats were used for contacting gods”
“the solstice is where the planes are the thinnest”
“the Sun Tree was planted by the DawnFather (one of many very real deities)”
“its like the Everlight (another deity) can’t hear me anymore”

Answer to a question in your video, dragons gain the ability to turn into humans at a certain age. They aren't humans that turn into dragons. Dragons have a shape change ability once they are a certain age (800-1000+ years). D&D wizards of the coast confirms this for metallic dragons (silver, gold, bronze, etc.) and from VM we know Matt also did this for some of the chromatic dragons of the chroma conclave with Thordak, Raishan, and Brimsythe.

Bidet, all! I've really been enjoying your reactions: I love listening to them while I work, and have gone through so many that I just listen to the audio while I work, I know where you are in the series based on the audio.
There are recently some really silent spots, though, with neither commentary--I know you all are super-engrossed, I get that!--nor show audio, which makes it difficult to follow. I know you probably edit due to DMCA worries, but you're doing a great job with chopping up and covering video, they're totally cool as long as you're not just straight-up playing the whole show (although I've seen that, too.) On to Episodes 3 and 4, I can't WAIT to see your reactions to them!

Notice how in this episode, Vox Machina tries doing everything they successfully did against Brimscythe at the start of season 1, but literally none of it works against these ones because they're just *that* much more powerful. (Brimscythe was a young/adult dragon, while these are *ancient.*) More specifically:
    1. Grog, their strongest fighter, rages and strikes their weak spot at the base of the neck, and while it killed Brimscythe, these are so tough that *his axe* breaks instead and the dragon is totally unharmed.
    2. They try illusions to fool them, but ancient dragons have detect magic and can see through illusions.
    3. They try magic, but these are powerful magic users themselves and are fully capable of casting Dispel Magic.
    4. They fought Brimscythe inside a cave where his mobility was hindered, but as Thordak demonstrates, these ones are so powerful they could just break through a mountain even if you manage to corner them inside one.

Oh yes, the MeToo broom. This is a case where the show changed things from the original campaign. Originally Vex stole the broom from one the many celebrity guests that Vox Machina has on their show to play for a short time named Gern Blanston. He was a blue Dragonborn that specialized in a special in necromancy and candle making. Not to long after he was on the show the real life actor who played him, Chris Hardwick, faced abuse allegations from his then girlfriend Chloe Dykstra. This happened right at the height of the MeToo movement and since the people of Vox Machina were friends with both people they decided the best thing to do was distance themselves from Chris so they killed of Chris's character offscreen and wrote him out of the narrative. Even after Chris came out with evidence clearing his name and proving that he was the one who broke off the relationship with Ms. Dykstra after finding out she was cheating on him. The accusation of abuse didn't come util Chris and spent several weeks rejecting her attempts to restart their relationship.

Yeah you dont fuck with dragons, especially if they are thousands years old as they get stronger with age.
The dragons we seen till now all strangely belong to a faction, The Chroma Conclave, and are:
Brimscythe - blue dragon in season 1 with lighting breath, was the youngest
Vourgal - white dragon - breathes ice
Umbrasyl - black dragon - breathes acid
Raishan - green dragon - breathes poison
Thordak- red dragon - breathes fire
Another thing about dragons that you noticed is the glowing eyes - which was probably them using magic.
As if being a dragon not powerful enough, dragons are also capable of learning some spellcasting and they often do.

The harsh fact about Keyleth is real dark. High level Druids gain the ability to automatically slow their aging to a crawl, every 10 years that pass, they only age 1 year. So if Keyleth keeps faffing about with her duties, everyone she knows and loves won't be around to see her eventually succeed.

Dragons in dnd are very inteligent. The older the larger the more powerful and inteligent. They can posses magic and take human form. Their power literally changes their home/lair to their own element. In the first season it was the gold conducting electricity. The chromatic coloured ones are evil. red - fire, black - acid, green - poison, blue - lighting and white - ice.
