I think you hit the nail on the head. Rock and Roll originated with black blues over here but the British Invasion perfected it and gave us monster groups like The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, etc... The 60's really opened America's eyes as to what was going on in England thanks to the music and fashion. I think we have been looking over each others shoulders for many years...LOL. Punk is a great example of The Brits taking the Ramones and answering with The Jam. Great stuff!
This type of raw power from clean guitars with no distortion is something metal heads still don't get....this kicks my ass as much today as it did when I first heard it 25 years ago.
Not down the spine - this hit me right between the eyes. I still treasure the 7'' single. It started a lifelong interest in music for me - brilliant song. I can still recall the day I heard that intro at full volume in the school commom room.
Are you kidding, i'm into metal and music involving loads of distorted guitar and this is about as pure as you can get. If this was distorted anyone could do it, but this is just incredible the way it is, the energy and the passion involved. You clearly need to get a clue. This is fantastic, and for the year it was produced quite groundbreaking imo showcasing the true talent of this band.
Thumbs up if, when you heard The Who, The Jam and The Clash for the very first time you felt something right down yor spine. For me, listening for the first time was discovering a new dimension on rock, and discovering music once again.
It is true that rock and roll started in the USA. It was early black musicians that influenced the likes of the Rolling Stones, The Jam and a million other bands. But at this point Rock & Roll is a universal language.
To correct a few , mod was a youth subculture developed in the 1960s in england . With music based on american R&B and blues , bluebeat , and ska . Mods cared tremendosly about the way they looked , they tipicly had the money to caiter to that . Well yet some didn't... Due to the high price of cars thet adopted riding scooters . Lambrettas , vespas , etc . They wore suits , and the ladies wore skirts and dresses . During that time slot mods would fight with rockers in grand standouts .
you know that clash were often criticized for their material interests.........plus Joe Strummer cited that this was not an allusion to THE JAM! This is a great song by a greta band!
Stylistically, this band mainly and a few others in the punk/new wave movement were prototypical for the entire power pop/punk trio format. It's Green Day that nods to The Jam. Good observation.
Live, in 1977, so this was from one of the gigs they played on the 'This Is The Modern World' tour that started on November 17th. Tony Wilson's 'So It Goes' show on the 20th had film of them at the Electric Circus in Manchester, and this is a different venue. Anyone know where this was filmed, and when? www.thejam.org.uk/gigs.html Jam - In the City
A bit more honest than doing it wearing ripped jeans i'd say! You're probably right about that being about the Jam, they were superior to the clash and joe strummer was a snidey git ;P
@LiveForever28 That's maybe a bit too exagerated I think. There are some fantastic Heavy Metal bands, but you just can't compare different styles. I'm a big heavy metal fan myself, but god I love The Jam. They're just mind blowing. Music can't get any better than this!
Yeah. That's what The Jam was good at. Copying several influences and really making an own sound unlike those influences. You can always tell when you hear a Jam song.
hendrix had to come over here to get reconised join up with the other to to become the jimi hendrix experience ,yes rock and roll started in america, the elvis,s,buddy hollys listened to the black musicians, white america wasnt intrested, even tried to get buddy holly etc to sing something else, all those muddy waters ,and blues records, made there way via sailors to places like liverpool ,london etc, were young lads listend to them and thought wow, lads we,ll have some of that,
Got into the Jam in the late 70's and this stuff was incredible after having to hear the Eagles and Dobbie Brothers on the radio every 20 minute,!!
Well they say you never know what you've got till it's gone - how I miss those early Jam days. Still love their music. Thanks for sharing this.
Ahhh...memories!......I wish I was 16 again......but then again I HATED my teen-age years! With a passion. The Jam were so brilliant. Takes me back!

My brother-in-law introduced me to this track when was 15 in 1982 and I've loved it ever since.
i heard the jam on college radio around '82. loved them. still do.

Oasis and all of ya, eat your heart out, these boys started it all!!!
Not down the spine - this hit me right between the eyes. I still treasure the 7'' single. It started a lifelong interest in music for me - brilliant song. I can still recall the day I heard that intro at full volume in the school commom room.
The coolest looking band ever. And these early songs kick ass.

Such an archetypal set up: 2 guitars, drums. Minds one of two basic sources of musical awareness. And what a Jam they're in. :)
Aye the jam .. was my school days lol whistle sharp as flint....:)
this is how popular rock music should be! edgy, clever, and exciting. shame there aren't any bands like the jam around these days.
this band has changed my outlook on music and songwriting completely.
Thumbs up if, when you heard The Who, The Jam and The Clash for the very first time you felt something right down yor spine. For me, listening for the first time was discovering a new dimension on rock, and discovering music once again.
AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!
"In the city there's a thousand men in uniforms, and I hope they never have the right to kill a man..."
Great song:) love the jam

Turning rebellion into money" the clash

I agree, sounds like the who, but sounds like the clash too..the same guitar sound ...that RAMMMM RAAAMMMM guitar sound!
@LiveForever28

Great clip. Add to tags: "Rickenbacker."
Like this !
"In the City" came first. Pistols stole the riff.

NICE!
One word: Grammer. Its Genious...
Gotta love the jam
@LiveForever28 Let music be music...Everyone has their own opinions in the matter. I love the Jam and Death metal.
Get 'Video Snap' if it's on DVD and 'Live at Bingley Hall'.
Yeah. That's what The Jam was good at. Copying several influences and really making an own sound unlike those influences. You can always tell when you hear a Jam song.

WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD THIS BEFORE?!
FAN BLOODY TASTIC
hendrix had to come over here to get reconised join up with the other to to become the jimi hendrix experience ,yes rock and roll started in america, the elvis,s,buddy hollys listened to the black musicians, white america wasnt intrested, even tried to get buddy holly etc to sing something else, all those muddy waters ,and blues records, made there way via sailors to places like liverpool ,london etc, were young lads listend to them and thought wow, lads we,ll have some of that,
now, now! somebody has been studying their sociology! =) lol!
The Jam once admitted that they partly stole of Holidays in the Sun. But. Everyone steals.
great!!!!
Heh heh - agreed. :)
@carmaj156 XD old rock is good i like in the city thumbs up guys
Sure you did...I don't recall the Jam ever playing the Starwood??? The Dickies did. You must have been high that night and thought it was the Jam...
They weren't punk, but they were top notch.
@LiveForever28 maybe different different genres can coexist? As long as music is made with passion and integrity, imo it's all good.
class
Did the Skulls play that night??? I think Shock canceled out???
Shahlagoddess - you raise a question in my mind. Was Joe talking about the Jam when he wrote that in "Hammersmith?"
thank f**k for vinyl & youtube.... xfactor is killing music!!! ...this is what music is all about!
agree..no Weller...no Jam....totally...they are ridicolous....
R O C K ! ! !
tis true
the song start by the jam is the riff from the beatles song taxman =]
@ibazookajoe I think it's funny about Cameron that he went to Eton and yet he says he likes "Eton Rifles." That made me laugh a lot.
Was "They got Burton suits, ha you think it's funny,
Turning rebellion into money" adresses to The Jam ?
Comparing Billie Joe to Paul Weller is like comparing soda water to champagne!! The Jam still rule...
I totally agree!
