    Very good video! Love the illustration on substrate. I believe the gel or sponge myth started out with imports since many imports have a wet sponge cube in their deli cups to prevent them from drying out. But some people interpret that as a water source. Not good. Anyways great video!

    If you're going to be feeding rodents to your T's
    Please at the very least use frozen thawed
    Please
    P l e a s e
    It's less cruel on the rodent AND it takes away p much all risk for your T
    I don't do it personally
    But if you're going to, at least be responsible with it.

    • @amethystsky937
      @amethystsky937 3 роки тому +1

      You can still feed live but it has to literally be a pinkie basically newborn. It shouldn't even have it eyes open yet no claws no fur ect. They can have a happy healthy life eating insects like crickets dubia roaches ect. Same with bearded dragons you can feed them a pinkie mouse but it is not recommended.

    • @amethystsky937
      @amethystsky937 3 роки тому +1

      About it being cruel how is it less cruel to feed them live insects? It's the circle of life and the food chain. Its part of your pets instincts and ultimately it is a choice the owner has to make. I personally don't frown on feeding reptiles or tarantulas pinkies as long as it's done right and their safety is of the utmost importance.

  • @CynicalCharmer
    @CynicalCharmer 5 років тому +25

    I use a heatmat, purely because they're energy efficient and I'm a country dweller in the south of England, so it gets ludicrously cold sometimes. Even the hatmat only keeps the terrarium between 68-75f max. It gets waaay colder without. The cold climate helps regulate the heatmats potential to be very warm, so I think that one is really subjective to circumstance.

    • @Dave-Rough-Diamond-Dunn
      @Dave-Rough-Diamond-Dunn 5 років тому +3

      It really is, I think Americans always recommend a space heater because central heating is common there and they're not realising that in other countries we are already using space heaters to warm ourselves. So if someone is saying that the temperature in their tarantulas' enclosure is too cold and asking for advice on heating the enclosure then saying "heat the room with a space heater" is about the stupidest, most unhelpful and redundant thing you could say!

    • @ladymiaeriksson5809
      @ladymiaeriksson5809 5 років тому +1

      Exactly the info I was looking for 🙂 I live in the north of Sweden in an old house. So even with heatmats the temp usually ends up at maximum 27-28° celsius during winter. At the moment I only have snakes and a chameleon but my goal is to one day own a tarantula as a proof that I have concered my arachnofobia. I kind of fallen on love with Cyriocosmus elegans. Atleast on a screen.

    • @luisachen6389
      @luisachen6389 4 роки тому +1

      My concern is where do you keep the heating pad? Using a heat pad is bad bc when you put them under their enclosure, they could burn themselves by burrowing. Tarantulas usually burrow to get to a cooler place

    i think the reason why pet stores suggested wood chips is because for a mix of substrate.. as i know from experience, plainly coco fiber will actually collapse (un tarantula's burrows) n does not hold together very strongly.. tats why need some "binder". tats where sphagnum moss, peat moss, sand, wood chips, etc comes in., to make the substrate better. Exotics Lair even use clay.. wow

    Very good list, I wish I had had access to this leading up to purchasing my first Tarantula. I saw all the points you raised debated one way or another and actually since keeping them I've come to the same conclusions as you. Heat mats, for example, are often promoted as an essential product, which I suspect is often either a ploy to sell them or misinformed dealers. And misting is okay every now and then but seeing as many Tarantulas come from hot, arid environments, it's pretty sensible to not constantly fill their air with moisture; having said that it depends on the species so always research any individual Tarantula before buying. Woodchip is, as you say, unnecessary. A big piece of bark or wood is good for feature.

    • @tarantulakat
      @tarantulakat  6 років тому

      How big is the spider, around? When they are still small sometimes they still burrow a bit. But if it's around 2 or 3 in or larger I would remove some substrate. If you're worried about humidity you can add some spagna moss :)

    • @snakez1747
      @snakez1747 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. The T is around 3.5-4cm (1.5inch) and the enclosure is 14cm high (5.5inch). I bought a new enclosure today but it's 12inch high, 6inch wide so it will be too big for the T atm.

    Great video, I commend you on your respectful nature. I have a question regarding my lovely 2 year old Grammastola Pultripes (raised from sling) and her proper water needs. I have tried a sponge and instantly came to your same conclusion, thus only having a shallow bowl made out of a desert rock combination. Her 10 gallon tank has about 3" of cocao fiber at its highest points. I have been soaking the majority of the fiber with water, avoiding puddles of standing water and her webs of art. I do let the substrate almost completely dry out before rewatering (sometimes even completely dry). She seems hydrated though its hard to tell; She really hasn't moved since her move to the 10 gallon. She is however active in her climbing near her burrow and eating. I spoil her (3-5 crickets weekly the most and sometimes only 1-2 every 2 weeks at the least) please comment on most reccomended meal plans for her as well. I want my beautiful arachnid to live a full, fun and healthy life. I am a novice spider/small creature keeper and seek as much advice as I can get. Thank you for your video again and hopefully your feedback.

    Common names are for you to tell people that have no idea about spiders in general.
    When keeping scorpions or venomous snakes common names are straight up dangerous.
    If I get stung by a scorpion, go to the hospital, and then tell them "It said yellow desert scorpion on the enclosure in the store.", that's definitely going to make things more complicated.

    There’s big seller that I won’t name that is so annoying because they literally only use common names for all of their slings. It’s a really big online exotic pet shop too so that makes it seem really unprofessional to me. The only common name that I think is acceptable most of the time is the good ol’ green bottle blue. Everyone knows what a gbb is. It’s really important to know those names

    Coco coir in my opinion is obsolete and impractical but that's just me. Reason #1, because they don't live in this stuff in the wild. Reason #2 they live more on loamy sandy clay soil mix in the wild. For the 3rd and final reason. Coco coir mold so easily, and you will have to keep changing your Ts substrate over and over just to keep it mold free. The only way to rid of mold or any of their left over junk such as excrement or food balls on coco coir are springtails just to keep waste in check. Peat moss or loamy sandy soil do not mold so easily IMOE, especially if you have some side kicks around like springtails.

    I agree with all 7 of them, the common name one I really don't like using common names. I've heard too many stories and I've met too many people who have gotten the wrong tarantula because of the common name. And yes the wood chips need to stop, that's something you add to a snakes cage with substrate.

    I think all are very valid and correct points. As for vertebrates, I've seen some keepers offer a pinky or fuzzy mouse but more often frozen thawed (and that is to larger Ts like a T. Stirmi or T. Blondi etc.) I wouldn't ever risk a live, bite/scratch capable rodent around a T. I also feed F/T to all my snakes/herps if I can help it (mega picky eaters are obv their own exception, but I thankfully don't have those rn).

Honestly I took it out and put on an upside down leggo with water instead. I'm probably silly but I was scared this huge thing would crush my sling lol. Plus bacteria.

    Worked in prison and the cliente said his "Miss Tula" got a bird. Definitely a vertabrae. LOL
    Oklahoma had a lot of spiders that were fast when the lights went on in unused rooms.(Brown Recluse spiders presented to our classes by instructors) One spider crawled over me and I carefully pinned it on the blanket and could feel its legs moving. I unpinned it but it was faster the Next night. (Slept under Black Widows in North Carolina)
    Reading about people's homes being infested by Brown Recluse and the people are never bitten.
    People around the world tell me these spiders and snakes do not bother you if they are left alone.
    Chased a moose through the woods (passed deer) until it turned and I chose a different path. Wild dogs are interesting.
    These spiders do not scare me and move well.
    Worked in prisons with possible Spider bites with no spiders; usually reddened swollen skin received 1gram of antibiotic Rocephin inj. with good results.
    Met a man in Thailand; he and his family collected and presented tarantulas from around the world.

    Back in the 90s when I lived in a cold climate, I made the mistake of putting the glass container with the spider on the radiator and it nearly cooked my tarantula. As for bedding, I just put regular dirt in it and they enjoyed it alot. They would dig a hole and enjoy it but they have to have a hiding spot. I put a fish tank decoration thing in it that had a hole they could crawl into and hide.

    Without a heater, I never knew what to do for my first kept tarantula in the winter. It would sometimes be 60 degrees in my room, and the T would be huddled up in the corner. I'd say a heating pad could be placed on the wall of the container worst case scenario, so that it can at least sit next to it or even crawl onto it, as I saw mine doing for warmth. I am open to more suggestions though, since if there is a better way to keep a tarantula happy with colder weather, I'd like to know

    hey, im a beginner T. keeper aswell. I live in the Netherlands and here its not Always a good temperature for my spiders so i use heating pads for my T's. I make sure that there is enough coco fibre between the T. and the Pad. I also bought a ''special'' one which connects to the outside of the enclose so there is no risk in burning the T. As far as i can tell the T's really enjoy the warmth of it but that's just my oppion. i can really see the danger in the pads if they are connected in the inside and the T. can just dig his way to it and burn him self. I have a brachypelma Hamorii and a nhandu chromatus. Great video! (as Always)

    Heating is the most challenging thing for me. It can drop down below 10 degrees in winter and it’s not practical to heat the entire room 24/7 when I’m not home. Currently I have a heat mat on a large tank and put my small tarantula cage inside. Do people reallly heat their entire house 24/7 all winter???? I guess electricity must be super cheap in the US.

    That was a greta video thank you! I´m considering getting a tarantula and been researching them for a while now and found the Grammostola pulchra which I would love to start with since it is so beautiful and rather docile compared to other species from what I´ve seen. However I´m not sure about humidity levels because it says that it naturally lives in an area with up to 95% humidity but some spiderboards said that they like it dry? I really want to know everything I can before deciding on a species and if anyone could help me that´d be awesome! :D

    Yes you need a minimum depending on the size and the T in question but some will actually be ok if other things like a hide etc is offered...
    Someone tried to tell me off for not using 4 or 5 inches with my Obt....currently it's on 3 inches n ok..so my point is it can be dependant on the T!

    I would add that you shouldn’t handle your T without investigating its demeanor first and you shouldn’t hold them too high since they are actually so fragile in their abdomens... I saw your zoo video and it wigged me out to see the smithi(I think that is the one it was) up so high in her enclosure... I just kept repeating please don’t fall, please don’t fall.... especially at a zoo where so kid could startle her by banging on the glass or something.... I feel like a lot of people don’t realize that they aren’t these iron man style arachnids... in short, please handle your tarantula with care would be a great addition to the list!
    Ps the rest of the list was very good and informative!

    My tarantulas burrow caved in last night. I built a burrow for her, but she decided to dig her own. She used the premade den for a while, but eventually got tired of it. I also thought I saw that she dug a burrow from one end of the tank to the other. So I can’t find her, and since there is no viewing point for her other burrow, I don’t know if she’s alive. I am NOT a tarantula expert and this is my first tarantula. So I just want to know if any of you guys have had your burrow collapse and if you’ve found your tarantula after the collapse? Currently my p. cambridgei is drinking misted water on the wall of her tank. My e cyanognathus p irminia a chalcodes l parahybana b cabocla also drink from the walls or plant leaves that have been misted.....most of m T's have never touches their water dish....just sayin.....I'll keep misting because my T's hydrate that way

    Regardless of wether it is legal or not to use living vertebrates as food for invertebrates (and it is indeed illegal in some countries), I really don't get why anyone would use a living animal as prey, that is known to be able to experience fear and pain. Is it "fun" to see a mouse struggling to breathe, because the muscles needed for the respiratory system to work are getting paralyzed? I guess it says a lot about the person that is capable of such cruelty...
    There is no reason why we cannot use vertebrates to feed our tarantulas so there is really no excuse to use rodents.
