In November 2020 Sir Cliff Richard sets a new all-time Official Chart record that week by becomming the first artist EVER to score a Top 5 album in EIGHT CONSECUTIVE DECADES. He was 80 years old when he reached that milestone. Thank you for highlighting this amazing artist.
I was there. This concert in Liège (at the Forum) was filmed by the Belgian Television. The audience was terrific. I have been a fan of Cliff from his beginnings in 1958 (I was 10) with the first English Rock 'n Roll "Move it" and I can assume that he has a complete range of styles of songs. He is the only artist to have at least a number one in 8 decades among other great performances and I'm proud to be one of his loyal fans base all over the world.
We love him and respect him also for his engagement in charities and for achieving his great career without taking drugs or anything bad. Thank you so much for paying tribute to him. Moreover, he was the first British artist to have been ennobled by Her Majesty the Queen of England. He is known as Sir Cliff Richard (Knight).
I must admit I am part of the tribe of people that grew up thinking that Cliff Richard is uncool, but that man can sing and the fact that he has been making music for so long is amazing, he really deserves more respect. I will look up a lot more of his music now, thanks Fil for this reminder that some amazing artists are forgotten and pushed aside in the contemporary music world.

Cliff Richard is such a great vocalist. Love his style. A real nice personality too. Had many great songs to his credit and a fantastic backing band The Shadows who had much success in there own right.

I'm American and was a teenager in New Mexico and I remember a few songs from the early to mid 80's. A Little in Love, Suddenly & We Don't Talk Anymore. I actually bought the 45 of A Little in Love😁

We know him here in Canada. He was one of my favourites from Britain. Summer Holiday and Bachelor Boy were popular here.
Cliff Richard has many fans here in the Far East. Traveling Light, The Young Ones, Summer Holiday, When the girl in your Arms, Take Me High, Devil Woman were all huge hits in the airwaves in the 60s and 70s here. And he comes over often for concerts.
I not old enough to remember Cliff Richard, only his late 1970s hits, and I'm 57. I very much appreciate his career, longevity and I believe very much under appreciated outside UK, Europe. He should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame. I'm sure he was an influence to many UK artists and others. Too many horrible artists in rock and roll hall of fame with not 1/10 of his record sales. Thanks Cliff, ur a class act.
John Lennon said that he really rated Cliff’s early stuff. “Move It” was a big influence on him.
When I entered the work force in the 80's, songs like "Suddenly" played on work-appropriate radio stations. Loved the other pop songs mentioned in comments here. Never knew of this recording. Beautiful. Appreciate your critique. 😃USA commenter here
One of your best analysis and homework you have done an artist. this is a great performance by Cliff and the Shadows. a Classic Rock station I listen to plays "Devil Woman" a lot. I agree over all Cliff is not as well known as he should be. thanks for reminding us how great Cliff Richard is.

The ultimate Pop star. Whatever the current style of Pop, Cliff Richard was on top of it. He really did have a great voice. And The Shadows were skilled and innovative, top-notch musicians. Under-rated, in my opinion. Cheesy? Sure. It's Pop. It's GOOD Pop. Fun one, Fil! Oh, that Hank Marvin!
Thanks, Fil!!! You've reviewed another of my favorite all-time artists! I have loved Cliff Richard since the early seventies. No one I knew had ever heard of hi! I had to order import albums since we couldn't get them here in the states. But, it was worth the extra cost! He became a little more known after "Devil Woman," but more so after co-hosting a show called " Solid Gold."
I so lucky to see him when he came to Chicago on April 9, 1981. I remember the date because my birthday is/was the next day! I was mesmerized. After attending probably over a hundred concerts, it remains number one on my list of best concerts. Followed by Kelly Clarkson this year, and Elvis (I feel guilty!) in 1973. His music is still enjoyable after all these years. He just celebrated his 79th birthday in October and still sounds pretty good! Thank you for researching him and giving your review.
As a side note: Burton Cummings and Rick Springfield have also spoken about Cliff's influence on them. Rick was a huge fan of Hank!

Partway through your analysis Fil, but thought it worth mentioning that 4th in the list you cite (Presley, Beatles, Cliff) are the Shadows themselves.
Quite a feat for, regardless of their excellent vocal abilities, a group known predominantly for their instrumental output.

I never seen his face here in the U.S. until the early 80's. I was running a tavern then and they used to sell these compilation albums for old artists during commercials on very late night TV.
I remember Cliff from the 80s. He reminded me a lot of Mick Jagger. Those people eho thought Cliff wasn't cool were completely clueless.
Just to prove I'm a geek - Cliff and the Shadows appear and perform (as marionettes) in the 1966 "Thunderbirds are Go" film - with Fab-1. You don't get much cooler than that!

They were all friends as well ( him and the shadows). They always practiced a lot before shows. He seems a little OCD, but in a good way…wanting everything to be right! He has such a warm voice both speaking and singing. I think the 1st album I bought of his was in 82 ( now you see me now you don’t), got the cassette and played it in the car back and forth to work. Have bought lots more since. No idea why he never made it big here ( US). Would have loved to see him live…watched videos from his UA-cam channel as well as have VHS and DVDs of concerts! He knows how to put on a great show as well as work an audience. The Event was spectacular, as well as Thank you very Much, one from London in 1980 that is out on his channel too. Funny thing, I was never an Elvis fan, but loved Cliff from the 1st time I heard him. I love his 60’s work like you played here as well. ( 66, from Ohio/USA)👍

I can tell you Cliff Richards was a huge star over here. Growing up in the 80s he had a string of hits and then there was the take on “Living Doll” with Cliff and The Young Ones that also was a chart topper over here.
I was wondering if you were going to do a segment on Tony Burrows. It was only after I saw a short clip from the BBC, I think, on UA-cam when I found he sung so many songs I loved but I never knew his name. Seems he , like Cliff Richards, he one of the nice guys of British music and everytime I hear Tony sing Love Grows it makes me smile. In my opinion he is a great talent.

@@laurakali6522 Yeah I had the LP...I think those songs were from the album titled "I'm nearly famous ." My next thought of Cliff was his duet with Olivia Newton John on the Xanadu soundtrack. At the time, I wasn't even sure who was singing with Olivia. I asked a guy at the music store.

Fil, interestingly enough Cliff Richard had the opposite "problem" John Denver did, that Cliff was very successful in Great Britain but not so much here in the states; whereas John was quite successful here but didn't get a lot of "love" from English Audiences.... fascinating stuff. Cliff Richard was an excellent musical artist.
I have been thinking about his #1 hit “We Don’t Talk Anymore” a lot. Those lyrics hit home. No communication in any type relationship is no good. No wonder it was his #1 hit because many of us can relate. Amazing talented man. Thanks for your excellent analysis of him.
My mum’s favourite artist back in the day. It’s so strange how he is a household name here in the UK and most Americans have never heard of him.

One has to see him live with the Shadows. I saw them 63 and again 47 years later in 2010. Brilliant is the only word i can think of. Always a fan since 1958.

Cliff was the reason both Paul and John wanted a number one song in America before they came here. Mr. Richards who was extremely popular in GB had booked a series of concerts that had bombed miserably here in states and the Beatles did not want that to happen to them. They got their wish while in Paris when I Want to Hold Your Hand hit number one in, l think December of 1963. He had a few decent tunes.
Dreaming was a USA top 10 for him in the early 80s too. And he sang Suddenly with Olivia Newton-John.
Early on very nice vocals and lyrics. The band was dead on backing him. I hadn't heard this song prior to now and I am 62 years old. His enunciation is nearly perfect.

Bringing me back to my teenage years - I was 17 at that time - but I was listening to him earlier than that! He was quite the hearthrob! Hank Marvin's Apache is unforgettable.

Yes, he was in the teen magazines in the US along with Lulu, Dusty Springfield, and others. Devil Woman was his biggest hit that I remember. Only saw him in a couple of movies but he seemed really cool. Was too into the invasion to give him much attention. He seemed so "Pat Boone" mellow. Love to hear your analysis of Robert Palmer doing "Bad case of Loving You". Doctor, doctor give me the news...

I'm fortunate to have grown up with Cliff & the Shads from the late 50's, he was undoubtedly the greatest rock singer in the UK from '58 to '62, he had a great voice always sang in key, but he was helped by the fact that one of his Drifters mates, was a chap called Ian Samwell, he wrote Move It and a score of other great hits for him. Ian played bass, but was replaced by Jet Harris very early on as he was a much better bass player joining Hank & Bruce, Tony Meehan came along at the end of 1958. It was when Cliff had his first hit, the Drifters/Shadows became his employee's, until they split up in 1968. They were a 5 man combo, Cliff got the Shadows their recording contract who had become the catalyst for creating the Cliff and the Shadows sound, so in fact as early as 1960 in their concerts, The Shadows had their own spot on the show, usually closing the first half and then joining Cliff for his spot in the second half. Until the Beatles appeared in force mid 1963, Cliff & the Shadows were the giants of British pop music. The Beatles then changed the face of pop music for ever. The reason why Cliff and The Shadows have lasted so long is that they are so very good and very professional at what they do, they may now appeal to everyone, but their music is good, with Cliff always changing his singing style. I went to my first Cliff & The Shadows concert in 1964 and have been to lots of their joint and individual concerts since and they have never failed to impress.

A great analysis of a great singer, I have seen him and the Shadows on several occasions, most notably at the 02 on the Reunited Concert, what a night, just fantastic. Thank you for producing these videos, they really give you an insight into the music and the performers. I have been around a while and I am ‘constantly’ (if you pardon the pun’ ) learning something new, I also recently enjoyed your analysis of the Hollies, a local band to where I live and also a great live band, long may you continue with these very informative and educative videos it makes you appreciate these performers even more, great stuff.
Fil, someone in the live stream on Tuesday asked you about singing country music. There is a group called The Shires who are from England and they sing country music. They have a video on UA-cam and they sound good. In the USA there are many accents, but most Americans can sing country music no matter where in the US they come from. Give it a try.

You know one of our most popular early rockers who even wrote his own stuff was Billy Fury. It's interesting to note that he was in the UK charts for longer than the Beatles. Also they were once potentially cited to be his backing band but were rejected as not being good enough.:) You could check out his composition That's Love which sounded so authentic it could have been a track on The Sun Album.
He had exceptional good looks in the early 1950s and 60s. Also a naturally good singing voice. He looked better with the late 1950s rocker hairstyle. It added some credibility to his image. If Cliff had have kept that late 1950s hairstyle, he may have had more success later in the U.S.A.
He’s still performing live to sell-out audiences. Saw him at Blackpool Opera House last year and Cartmel Racecourse in 2019. Brilliant singer and showman.
I kept waiting to hear another song. I grew up in the 60s and his name is not familiar to me. But I'm going to check into it more because he definitely has a voice that I would have liked. Wasn't bad looking either. I don't know why but somehow his song reminded me of the type of songs that Roy Orbison recorded. I have absolutely nothing to base this on except what came to mind. His voice is definitely smoother then Orbison but the type of song seemed like something Roy Orbison would have sung.

Nice to see cliff and the shads getting some recognition. I think they get knocked quite a bit these days unfairly I think. Yes the Beatles came along and blew everybody away but nice to give credit where it is most certainly due!!

I remember going to see Cliff in Birmingham in the latter half of the sixties. This was when Cliff had gone off and was promoting his Christian-based repertoire. I had gone to the show expecting "Summer Holiday"-type songs and that sort of thing. I was really disappointed by the show because it certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I grew up later but at the time I wasn't impressed.
I'm so glad you highlighted Hank Marvin who was one of the best backing band guitarists ever, IMO. When The Shadows started to establish their own identity (in the way The Eagles did post-Ronstadt) he really came to the fore - again, IMO.

As usual, Fil, a nice breakdown of the performance - although at the end of the chorus, after "flame in me" I was always waiting for an augmented final chord. Didn't happen.
Also, kudos for the well-deserved jab at the music industry, which naturally is profit based (which one isn't?), but a sharp reminder is never amiss when real talent is getting ripped off.
Growing up, Cliff was the singer your mum liked and your granny absolutely loved.
Alas, not for us. Once we'd seen Jagger, Daltry, et al. Cliff was, to be honest, a bit of a joke....too polite, too cute, too well-behaved...

Hey Fil nice work! Have you considered analyzing Tony Joe White? I saw him in concert last year and met him afterwards. True southern gent. Very very talented with guitar, harmonicas and god knows what other instruments he was playing. It was just him and one other guy playing. I love rainy night in Georgia, Polk salad Annie,I get off on it, even trolls love r&r...oh and many more. 😁

Nice to see Cliff getting a bit of positive recognition. He gets a lot of stick, but he must have something to have had sustained such a long career! He’s sold tons of records and made some very good recordings.
Ok, ok. I have 6 Cliff Richard albums and 10 of The Shadows (and a The Shadows (The Atlantic Blues) not sure if it's them or someone other...) HOWEVER. Except for Apache, I don't know much about Cliff or the Shadows. I remember them as a cover band, possibly before Cliff joined them. I've moved some of he and they over to my Hit List to listen to. Like with book libraries, I haven't listened to anywhere near all of my library.

Well, I had the name before. But, this is the first time I've heard a song of his. And, I'm no kid! Answer me this, he's British right? How come when Brits sing, they have no discernible accent? Anyway, thumbs up for the analysis, as always!
In an interview on a TV show (British, but can’t remember what show … saw it here on UA-cam) … he said when you sing R&R you have to use an American accent to make it sound real/right. He then used an example, saying you can’t sing Do you want to daunce? (Instead of Do you wanna dance … not sure how to spell the British accent … but he made it sound posh, haha).

Coincidentally I saw the same video(constantly)a few days ago & you chose the same song & video for your analysis. If he had the same success in the US as he has had in GB can't imagine what his record sales would have been. It is no mean achievement to be just behind Elvis & The Beatles in record sales. A request. Please do an analysis of his 1989 live at Wembley stadium concert where he invites exShadows members Jet Harris on bass & Tony Meehan on drums on stage .the song- Move It.

Don't know why but I haven't heard this one before. I like it. I had the pleasure of seeing Cliff in Hong Kong, in a stadium concert, along with Hank Marvin and Olivia Newton John, or as we used to call her, Olivia Neutron Bomb! Shame about what the media did to him in recent years.
