Thank you Fil for including this great song. Dean Ford rerecorded this song prior to his passing. It was interesting to hear him sing it as an older man comparing it to when he was much younger. It appeared that the lyrics had a different effect to Dean. It was kind of sad for me to see him sing it as an older man as I sat there listening to it as an older man myself. I was happy to see him singing it once again though. It just goes to show how fast time goes in a lifetime and how short our youth is. Rest in peace Dean Ford and thank you to Marmalade for the music.

My suggestion to cover would not be one band, but rather one singer, Tony Burrows, who was the lead singer of 6 different bands that each had a one hit wonder. He was the singer of Edison Lighthouse ( Love grows where my Rosemary goes), White Plains ( My baby loves lovin), The Pipkins ( gimme dat ding), The First Class ( Beach Baby), Brotherhood of Man ( United we Stand) and The Flowerpot Men with Lets go to San Francisco where two band mates went on to join Deep Purple. Tony sang background as well with everyone from Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard, Tom Jones to Elton John, where he sang backup on Tiny Dancer and Levon. Incredible talent, that many wouldn’t know.

    We believed in World Peace.
Vietnam was still on in the background. Assassination of the Kennedys, Martin Luther King- Kent State. Everybody was reflecting on their life. And everybody knew and wanted to change. Every now and then this song plays in my head.
The death of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix 1970. Reflections Of My Life- this song really struck a chord. Thanks for doing the review Fil. This is a good piece of art and it evokes an emotional response. We believe in World Peace- we still do.

This song was a staple on jukeboxes/radios during the Vietnam war, checkout the lyrics. The average age of soldiers then was 19 years old. The isoprinciple (music therapy term) meets the mindset that these drafted boys had watching each other get injured and die is staggering. The guitar solo “woman tone” is mournfully on point, too, brilliant. So many elements come together to make this piece perfect for those times. Amazingly great taste to choose this performance for your analysis, love it!

My heart connects with this song and Marmalade so much! I have strong and vivid memories of this song when it came out in 1970, and it just "brings me back to my own home" with a fervor. Wish I could have met each one of them. Thank you for your in-depth commentary on this band, and the musicality of their song.

I remember this song when I first started work at 15 years old in 1969. I still love it today and I’m now 69 years old 👍

I've said this years ago - I must repeat it. These analysis videos are so awesome. Fil really makes one appreciate the songs on a different level. Again - Fil's smile is truly indicative of his love for music. Fil should be teaching college-level music appreciation classes. I would sign up!!

Few songs can touch you like this, so many bands from this country then had such great harmony, so simple but so lasting

Phenomenal song!! Didn’t know virtually ANYTHING about this group, familiar with the song, having heard it a lot on the radio back in the day but never knew who sang it or any of the background. Thanks Fil for doing what you do so well!

An excellent choice, Fil. Although they were a Scottish band what made this song such a monster hit stateside was it came out just as Vietnam was ramping up, the tv coverage was so bloody and we were all wondering if it'd all be over before our 18th birthday. I listen to it often on UA-cam and boy, it hasn't lost it's ability to bring back those memories one bit. An excellently written, played and vocalized song and still so visceral. Props!

How 3 people can give this the thumbs down I do not know - they must have very limited musical taste if any at all! Anyway, Fil did make a couple of mistakes - I have been a fan of this band for over 40 years and been on the Dean Ford Facebook appreciation page for 10 years and I would suggest you check that out. It was set up by people that knew Dean and the band in the 60's indeed one was their fanclub secretary.Dean (when he was alive) Junior and Alan all made contributions to it so the information I have is first hand. First of all when they signed with CBS they were allowed to do their own songs but none was a hit here. The song I See The Rain was a number one in Holland. It was after the UK flops CBS said they had to do covers. Although they were the first Scottish band to top the uK charts Alan is English. Secondly, Junior did not use a standard tuning on his guitar so he wouldnt have used the pentatonic scale in the way Fil showed in the video. (Junior actually commented on this himself when someone once said he was playing all the wrong notes so must be miming!) Thirdly it was Junior who left to pursue a solo career in 71 not Dean - Dean stayed with the band until 75 when the last version of the Marms broke up. He then went solo without success and moved to New York where he became a chauffeur to the stars inc Bob Dylan who left his tambourine in his cab and which Dean used in a videos about 8 years ago The Scottish Road. Also part of the guitar solo in Reflections is backwards. The solo is so famous it has its own Wikipedia entry! Finally. the Everly Bros were both left handed but were told to play right handed and a band I was in had a left handed lead guitarist who played right handed but it limited his rhythm playing somewhat. Anyway, a great analysis none the less by Fil - ROCK!

One of my friends was with Mungo Jerry for a while and they toured with Marmalade. He said they were a laugh a minute. One of things he said the band members did was to sit at the front during MJ's performance and then stand up with placards showing a number- they scored the performance out of ten!
