How to Bend Tube

- In this video I'll walk you through how I go about bending tube for a tube chassis or roll cage for the Project Scorpion Crawler Jeep Cherokee XJ Buggy Build. I'm not a pro but I've been learning a lot recently and thought you'd like to see how it's done.
Whether you want to bend tube for a roll bar, a rock slider, a tube chassis, or a roll cage, its all pretty much the same. There are a few basic rules to follow and some tools you'll need to get it done.
Here are some tools you will need:
digital angle guage: amzn.to/2dbrkJR
angle finder: amzn.to/2dbrT6D
pro tools 105 bender or any tubing bender and matching dies: amzn.to/2fBKbzY
swag kit for the bender: amzn.to/2dbrgtM
syncnotch 180 jr or any tubing notcher: amzn.to/2dZEFqg

I know it's frustrating for you but I really like that you leave in the parts like - not having the right face shield - or - not even having the welder on. I can't describe how refreshing it is to see someone else mess up the little things too. I'm sure we're all guilty of stuff like that and it's easy to feel like a compete moron when doing it. But to know that others are goofy too, it really helps. Thanks for being a real show, BleepinJeep!
45 years of being a commercial/industrial electrician I have run hundreds of miles of conduit in subways, railroads, chemical factories, hospitals, schools, airports, sewage treatment facilities and the list goes on and on. I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the subject. One of the hardest to run is aluminum ridged conduit (ARC) because aluminum work hardens when you bend it, if you over bend it and try to take a degree or two out it will bend next to the bend that you are taking it out of. We usually work from the back of the bend and deduct the radius for 90deg.
Center for offsets and saddles.
You remind me of me in my youth, back in the 1980's my brother and I built most of the pro-street cars in our area.
lot's of fun but also lots of work. narrowing rear ends, roll cages,4 link suspensions, ladder bars and lots of interior tin work. Now most of the tube bending I do is for exhaust systems.
I built my own roll cage bender,a copy of the JD2/pro tools style bender years ago and bought dies from pro tools. I have a heavy duty bender I built just for bending 2" DOM for hotrod front axles, and a Babco bendpro 2000 for exhaust work.
You do excellent work, keep it up.
I am a huge fan of your videos, I'm just starting out in off-roading and Ive learned a ton of useful information from you guys. You guys are awesome
21:18 - Love how you're keepin' it real
Grant Forsythe absolutely agree! I have to say this is easily the best automotive channel on UA-cam and it's because he's the real deal.
Matt this xj build is insane but even more insane is the fact that its pretty much just you building it by yourself. Major props for those skills man. Keep up the Great videos.
+Guardian - Thanks, ya its taking me a while but I'm learning all of this at the same time.
I'm about to start the work on my own exo cage, so glad you're ahead, posting tips! :)
is it just me or does anybody else get excited when they see another video on the crawler?
great video btw. I'm going to start building a crawler myself with a WJ in about a year or so.
NICELY done. I really like your vids; clear, detailed and you explain things very well. I especially like how you take your time and you are meticulous and obviously take pride on your work. Many thanks for taking the time to post your experience.
Brilliant. Helps having such great tools but your working method and pace are pure genius.
I really enjoy these longer videos about the crawler, it's had a lot of progress since we last saw it! .... Keep up the good work, can't wait to see it when it's finished!
This is is by far the coolest build I have ever seen. I'd rather see a build done by him than any other person that has just about everything given to them. Amazing Matt. Very inspiring to see a build like this
Thanks Patrick
Nice work. Clear/Concise Explanations. No Drama or Music.......
Great job Matt!! Excellent video, love how you explain the angle finding technique. this built is sick!!! Keep on BleepinJeepn'.
For your first time doing this you sure did a gOOd job.I can't wait to see it done....
This is lookin awesome, good job keeping everything flowing nicely
Its really coming along great! Cant wait to see it out there!
Very good job. Doing my own research and you are helping me save time and metal. Thanks for that
You have a knack for explaining things in an easy way to understand. Nice video and jeep!
+ChicanoBluesAZ thanks, its probably cause I'm fairly new to it all.
looks great I'm liking the progress your making! makes me miss my cherokee
i applaud you and your XJ videos. it takes A LOT to even take pictures and do a wrap up on a build thread, let a lone make youtube content about it.
Keep up the great work.
+Jack Lamanna thanks, trying my best!
Really great explanations on your vid, thanks for all the detailed information. Great job buddy.
Nice tube work. I am a comercial/industrial electrician, so binding conduit is something im familiar with. Those complex bends can be a bear. Keep up the good work. Thumbs-up
Very nice workmanship and you've helped me understand the offsets THANKS
That cage is badass ...Great work!!
I understand your issues and thx for being honest it refreshing. Thx for your time.✌
Your work is excellent. Doesn't look like your first project.
I'm looking for a JD2 tube bender-model 32 with dies. Jim.
looks awesome . it is turning out great .
cheers
Nice job mate, loving your work 👌
Cant wait to see where your at in a couple of years. Awesome work.
Thanks
Wow.....great lookin rig Matt!!!!! I miss my Cherokees.
You are doing a great job.! Looks like fun too.
Sweet looking cage!!! Wish I knew how to do that stuff.
Only 1 way to learn.
Looks like you are well on your way of making a friend out of your bender. Very nice lines.
Beautiful work
Good timing! I have to fab some offset nerf bars for a sand rail tomorrow. Good technique for matching opposite sides.
Thanks brother for your time and perspective.....
Very nice captain... looking awesome.
What a great DIY project! Nice video man.
Great stuff! Keep up the awesome videos
Man this is awesome! Strong work!
Looks awesome! And your beard is coming along well too!
what would you recomend to make a bull bar pipe or tube? and if so what wall thickness?
very cool thank you for sharing. it's looking great!!
Very Cool. Great Job Matt
Great work and thank you for sharing.
this is going to be the baddest assed xj on pirate 4x4 in my opinion. yea there may be bigger and badder things but I've liked everything you've done on this build so far.
Thanks!
Like your videos you have learned a lot along the way and I'm am impressed! I laughed pretty hard when you flipped your hood down to tack and it was a grinding shield!! If I had a nickel for eveytime I've done it I'd be a millionaire keep it up!
Sucked cause I kept having to reposition the fender
i cant wait to see this finished and out wheeling
Keep up the good work!
man matt you the man looks awsome, thanks for the info on bending,,godbless
Love the channel! You have inspired an xj build at my shop. How do you mock up your bends? Do you use a program? Thanks!!!
Thanks for not editing out the struggle!
Holy crap man looks freakin awesome! bending tube is not easy especially in all those different axes and angle. Really impressive considering it's ur first cage
Appreciate it!
This made my brain hurt. easier said than done Matt. good video.
nice work! 👍🏻
Going to be one hell of a rig
It's looking good. hey, do you have any 2.4 turbo vids or just 2.4 vids?
Some good content right here!
I am impressed with your work on this project... 22:33 "it is ok just to tack in place" I was wondering about that. With the sheet metal I saw in the back, looks like it would be challenging to weld those pipes properly as the sheet metal would get in the way. Did you find that tack-in-place, in hindsight, was a good idea?
excellent job
Great video! Subscribed !!
Pat yourself on the back - GREAT VIDEO and GREAT JOB !
What radius dies do you recommend?
nice work, that Jeep is going to be tuff..
great video for you saying you don't know what you're doing your doing good
Well done well done indeed! Thanks
How much does it cost to make something like this that would totally fix my driver side fender problem it was smashed in pretty bad
Why use a rectangular tube at the foot base, is there a reason not to use round tube?
Thanks great video !
lol 21:40 I think everyone whos fabricated anything knows that struggle
Dumb question but can you bend exhaust tubing with this?
What kind of tubes are you using?
cool vids bro
good video
Hey, what size of tubing is that, and thickness?
Probably .188 wall 1-3/4"
great job Matt, looking really good. i did learn a few things from watching this. what kind of welder are you using? and where did you find that angle finder? and could you post the specs of your bender?
Millermatic 185 welder, Amazon, and pro tools 105
I wish I could give you ten thumbs up. Slick cheater tube trick. Gunny Z.
Looking good! Only suggestion I have is get that winch out of there when you're welding. If you get ANY weld splatter on the cable you will have to replace the whole cable.
how much did you pay for this Bender
question on your bender, i have the same model but im having problems with the follower die marring up the tube on the outside of the bend. I've chamfered all the edges on the follower die and using white lithium grease but still getting the same out come?? any tips would be great.
put the follower die on the next hole out... you'll get less of a bend in one stroke but I've found it works a lot better.
ok cool ill try that thanks!
If Jeeps had gods or superheroes, this would be the one to rule them all!
Lol, thanks
Can you build a cage without bends? Could you safely just weld decently shallow angles (not 90°) and add gussets?
Mmm Mhm no. That will cause shear points. The curves give it strength.
what size is the die and what is the bend radius
what tire size are you going to be running and what would be the biggest tire you could run
40, I'm only limited by whatever axles I have
MAn the build is awesome! Great work Matt! How come you don't post this in the cherokeeForum too?
Two forums is already two too much!
Im sure its been asked i love the videos what size tubing are you using for your cage?
1-3/4" .120 wall DOM
@bleepinjeep thank you!
I got a lot out of this video. Thank you for making it. Your rig is lookin' bitchin' and keep up the good work.
Nice video! Tube bending boggles me as well, not a lot of resources to learn it. Thanks!
are you gonna make flat fenders lake a wrangler in the front?
No
your work looks great.......but the most exciting part of the vid was the olive garden ad.
If you make a copy you can use a thick piece of wire to copy the shape of the first one and use it as a template on the second one.
Great work Matt!! Any plans on doing a Wrangler in the future?
Willys next
Hey, what size of tubing is that, and thickness? please comment back
1.75" .120
do you think you can do exhaust tubing with that?
No
I also have a electro plating shop.. you can get them deep clean and chromated
Awesome
If you take some solid copper wire you can make the bends you want with the copper and use it on your center line of your tube
I'm looking for a used tubing bender. I really like the bender you have. Anybody want to sell a bender? Jim.
I was on the lookout for a used bender for a while but the only ones that come up are the more expensive hydraulic benders. Even if you found a hydraulic you would still most likely need to buy the right die set. And looking at the cost of those die sets it's pretty hard to go that route. I finally decided to not deal with the hassle and ordered a JD2 Model 3 with a 1.75 die set. Even though the shipping costs will get ya I think it's worth the piece of mind for new tools. Do research on the quality brands. You can't go wrong with ProTools and JD2 but stay away Woodward Fab! Good luck
