- In this video I'll show you how to build your own front bumper. In this case for the Scorpion crawler Jeep Cherokee XJ. The front of the XJ is dovetailed narrower than normal which means you cant just go out and buy a bumper to fit... We'll have to make something custom.

I have a 91 Cherokee base that I bought 5 years ago, and today brought home a 96 Grand Cherokee, I have watched a lot of your vids over the last couple years. You have helped me out on so many problems and projects that have came up with the Cherokee. I wanted to take a moment and thank you personally for your channel. You continue to to an outstanding job.

Thank you Matt for making these videos. my first vehicle was a pos 92 jeep cherokee that needed a whole lot of work(re wired all electrical systems, painted, lifted 5 inches, transmission rebuild, 4wd and driveshafts, u joints, gas tank, and many other fixes that I learned to do by watching your videos) if I hadn't of found your UA-cam channel I wouldn't know half as much about fixing up cars/trucks and JEEPS as i do now. Your videos introduced me into the wonderful world of off roading and I love it! I have been following your channel since mid zombie jeep project and have watched every video. That was a great design! Can't wait to see that video about the warping I've never had it happen but I would like to see some of the fixes for that.

I just found your videos and enjoy them. When transferring hole to a template, try laying your material over the hole and tap it with the round end of a ball peen hammer. That takes the guess work out. Bumper looks good.

Best Cherokee bumper build I've seen. I know Jeeps are built and not bought, but, Matt if you ever decide to sell these, I want one!
because of you I am starting to like jeeps. so much potential.
I would build that fieard edge with full 1 1/2" DM.snd cut the plate to lay it in top at the tubing's cl. A frame member across the fronts with c channel support boxed that the bumper would key on with the winch mount bolts would mount the bumper and reinforce the bumper and winch as well as brackets from the OEM frame. The whole bumper assembly would bolt to the 3 frame projections for strength and easy removal. This inline 6 has a tendency to run hot and U wouldn't want to mess with it.
I have seen probably way too many of your videos, actually, 535 to be exact. Been a huge fan for over a year right now. Hopefully your channel never stops growing. good luck with the build matt. You should definitely start doing ZJ videos though.

looks great. Also for the 2 pieces of inch bracing inside the bumper, you could have cut slots in the bottom plate to access the edge of the braces to weld it fully or mostly to the plate

Looks sweet. I worry about blocking the radiator air flow and overheating. I’m in California. I’m thinking stubby with winch tucked under. I need other project - SYE, rear CV driveshaft and 6 degree shims first.

Shakle points should be a straight continuation of the mounting plates from the frame mount. Load directed straight off the frame. Not welded to the sheet metal. Shipyard structural welder. Dandahermit

Very sleek Matt, looks strong and fit for purpose. Many off road bumpers could lose some weight, visual and mass, Chucke2009s F250 comes to mind haha. Having less dead weight over the front whilst supporting a large winch is a good idea for all bumpers, not just for a crawler.

this is a amaizing vid, I have ZJ and it's hard to find aftermarket bumpers. This vid solves all my issues, now once I can buy the steel I'm building this bumper.

Very informative video, with lots of tips and tricks. Like the use of tubing on the leading edge, It looks a lot better than flat plate. I'll probably use some of your ideas, on my old Powerwagon. I don't own a Jeep but every video I watch, is useful information for the old Dodge.

Are you going to seal off the bottom plate on the back side...just worry about dirt and stuff that could get in there and then rust it out. Probably best to seal off? I know you'd lose your access to the winch bolts, maybe you could just weld threaded studs in the top plate for the winch? Just a thought, looks awesome regardless. Love your channel. You taught me how to change unit hubs on a D30 long ago!
Nice job on the bar, the front bottom plate would serve you better sitting under like you said. The half cut bars could help with a hi lift jack from slipping out.

Not sure if DOM tubing is necessary here. People usually use DOM tubing in cage and other structural fabrication because it does not have a seam, so in an impact the pipe wont split along a seam. In this case the pipe is cut in half so you could use a cheaper pipe with the same wall thickens as long as you avoid using the seam in your pieces.

I like the half tubes, no questions. However, I must say that the hidden winch designs of BadDadFab and BWE seem to lose only 2" of ground clearance, which is made up for by having a bumper that doesn't stick out more than an inch further than the frame.

Nice job on the bumper, not really my style, but it looks great. My favorite part are the tabs you made to attach it to the frame. A few things though, 1/4" plate is overkill, 3/16" would be plenty and get yo a 25% weight savings. I know you're shooting for a high approach angle, but the crank pulley looks kinda vulnerable, I'd rather hit a crossmember or bumper than my crank. Keep up the good work.
+Sean Ross Ya, at the time I thought my axle would be in front of the pulley but later realized that would put my wheelbase out too far so I may need to rethink that.

Just a thought. You could cut into the grille just enough to sink the bumper back another 2 or 3 inches. Then the winch would still be accessible and you would not need to have the angle brackets on the frame. Otherwise it rocks. I am looking forward to the videos. You just passed Dirt Every Day as my favorite show on you tube.

Why didn't you just cut your grill slots and push it in? Like the JP did with the Shrink Ray TJ project.
Why not cut an insert in the grille so the winch is recessed in it, don't go moving the grill, the hood will be off

Looking good Matt! Thank goodness you caught the braces before you welded them in all the way. ;)
Next time to make life easier skip this 1" strips that you added to brace up you top plate and just use your winch bolting locations to be the brace by finding out what size tube it take for your winch bolts to fit threw and weld up your bumper and then drilling your holes threw both up and lower plate and placing the tubing in the whole and welding around the top of the tube Which connects your upper and lower plate and prevents the bolt from distorting and crushing the 2 plates and making it easier to install and remove your winch for repairs or up keep

I think you might have been able to save more space if you were to recess the winch into the grill. That way the bumper wouldn't need to stick out as far. But that would require you to cut the grill up..

Looks really nice Bleeper. I like your half round tube idea. Much softer look than a plated edge. I may steel the design if I do a plate bumper and not tube. Did you ever come up with some over the winch protection?

awesome bumper! what brand winch is that your going with. i see 12,000lbs but don't see a brand. is it a harbor freight one?
not sure what it would have done to the structural integrity of the bumper but some dimple dies would have looked vary sweet on that thing. but that may be aesthetics over function.
