    Im not an expert on these kind of things not by a long shot but that has to be probably the best layout I've ever seen. As for the train itself how impressive is it pulling all those coal wagons. Weldone to the person who built this work of art............

    Almost like real....nice work. I have read about this special loco...wonder the reasons of failure cause one thinks that they could have been solved.

      Thanks. The main issues with the Jawn Henry were complexity and the electronics not playing well with the water and coal dust. Given more time they probably could have made it work much better, but it was the early 50s by the time they understood all the issues and the writing was on the wall for steam at that point.

    I recently decided to build a model of this locomotive in a video game I play. Found a scale blueprint for it online, slapped it into the game, set it to scale and started building... I was immediately in absolute AWE of the size of the thing. It's an absolute monstrous unit, even without the water tender.
    I wish I could have been alive to see it in operation in real life, I'm sure it was a sight to behold.
    Fortunately, I have found a clip with real audio. It's really something else.
    Here's the clip for those interested - ua-cam.com/video/APzxcyuEVaU/v-deo.html
    It should begin to play right at the timestamp where the engine comes into view.

      That's the clip I used as a guide when building the sound settings for this. Obviously I didn't match them perfectly since I was just working with Loksound's sound files and that original sound is clearly not recorded with a very good microphone, but I think it's close enough.

      @@NorfKhazad Hey, it sounds better than the railsounds that come with the 3rd rail o gauge model, that's for sure. Definitely one of the better versions of the soundset I've come across, so well done!

    Amazing! You're a monster. The sound is excellent! How many coal cars does this have and is that true to the train capacity?

    • @NorfKhazad
      @NorfKhazad  2 роки тому +1

      There are 66 hoppers on the train. Based on how steep the grades are I think it's roughly accurate to what this locomotive would have been able to pull.

    Wow! Fantastic Locomotive! Was this unit commercially available or was it a mix of kitbashing and scratchbuiding?

    • @NorfKhazad
      @NorfKhazad  2 роки тому +1

      It was made by Alco Models in 1982, they did a run of 175 models. I did some drivetrain modifications, added weight, installed dcc & sound, and painted it.

    What in the world is that car between the tenders and coal hoppers, it looks like two cabooses slapped together with all sorts of vents. Is this some kind of custom crew car, or was it based off of something? I'd love to make or find something like that for O scale.

    • @NorfKhazad
      @NorfKhazad  Рік тому +1

      It's the N&W's dynamometer car, used to measure pulling force and speed, and calculate horsepower. Due to the Jawn Henry's experimental nature it was frequently run with the dynamometer car for testing.

    • @danielkapp9468
      @danielkapp9468 Рік тому +1

      @@NorfKhazad Roger. I've seen Illinois Centrals Dynamometer car at the (NMoT) in STL. That's the same museum that displays the Y6a 2156.
      The Illinois Central car looks more like a slightly modified coach or baggage car, hence my confusion.
      Quite a shame that Jawn Henry didn't survive to preservation but that's how it goes sometimes.
      I just started converting a MTH Y6b to 2156 (as no O scale exists of it) and was just doing research when I came across this video. Everything just looks so realistic it isn't even funny.

      It was. Experimental steam turbine electric built for the N&W by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton, with a water tube boiler built by Babcock & Wilcox running at 600 psi. GE provided the electrical equipment.
