- Starting my Turbo Diesel Mercedes in a -40 degree wind chill polar vortex wasn't the best idea. I think my CDI has an issue.

What's the coldest weather you've ever started your car in?
220 CDI -22 celsius
im also in chicago. i started my 03 f250 diesel when it was -27 outside.
here in qc canada winter morning starts are generally -20 and lower with out wind chill
-50 C same in Fahrenheit ,pretty normal up here i live up northen Canada in fort mcmurray. My personal vehicle start just fine, jeep wrangler 2009 , got to warm it up otherwise its near impossible to change gear. Work truck dodge ram 2500 diesel 2015+ depend of the unit start fine, barely give heat even with a front blanket, you get use to it. If a may you might want to put some fuel conditioner in your diesel car just in case.
-40ish celcius
Ram cummins isb
Labrador city baby ;)
Just winter diesel in tank, good oils and good battery and diesel will start. Last week i start my diesel car in -28C/-18F and thats just normal winter temperature here in Finland
@@TSL256 Not exactly... Winter diesel have been removed the longest carbon chains to ensure better storing temperatured on arctic environment and its have made by distillation, not by adding chemicals (casoline).
And with a diesel, also important to check that glow plugs, etc. are good. Smart people use pre heater like block heater. Reduces tear and wear.
@@TSL256 gasoline😂😂😂😂
-15 Fahrenheit = -26 Celsius
I don't know why he doesn't add this to the screen of this video.
I know I can't google it but I don't want to leave the video and start googling .
Not everyone watching this is from the US.
Sam Max learn Fahrenheit
Why have him learn celcius? Why can’t you learn Fahrenheit?
Fahrenheit is irrelevant to everyone besides americans thats why.
And also he doesnt have to learn it he can just use google while editing the video
@@nam3go3sh3r3
You don't learn Fahrenheit/Celsius you feel it :)
If you have a youtube channel no one will watch your channel if you keep answering viewers learn it, nothing will be useful in your channel.
Never had any problems starting Mercedes CDI engines here in Norway. They started in -40 celcius without any help. I worked as a mechanic at Mercedes for 10 years and have repaired someone with over 1000000km on the counter. Good videos you make. Nice that you also have the CDI Mercedes. There is almost only diesel in Norway.
Daily sounds beast dude. Love how when cold as diesels start, they sound like they are going to break into pieces. My truck always sounds brutal. Keep on rockin the great videos bro and keep you and the fam warm:)
Thanks Tony, appreciate that
Love the Pontiac...
It was below -30 without windchill this week in Minneapolis. My truck fired right up. Didn’t try to start my beater lol
Last week north of you in winnipeg canada it was -60 with windchill -45 without windchill
hey I live there too
person1492 here in Southern California it was 35 this morning and we freaked out about that lol. My car had ice on the windshield and that’s actually crazy coming from here
Cool 🥶 video Alex, drive safe in those freezing conditions!
Great video Alex, keep up! I've been there last August and the temperature now is insane!
One of the best channels
Thanks!
My best guess on the black CDI would be glow plugs or maybe fuel pump/injectors, but really glow plugs seems most likely.
Coldest start I've done is only like -10°c in a petrol car, no big deal.
It's time to get a bigger garage! It breaks my heart to see those nice cars sitting out in the bad weather. Great video as always, thanks for sharing.
What Up Alex!!! Big Ups from Dallas, TX. Keep doing what you do Brah! Grew up around old Mercs when Father was station in Germany.
The black diesel starting was painful. It reminded me of the old Car X commercial rattle rattle thunder clatter boom boom boom!
Still waiting for the day I get to pass by as a new video is in the making! Great content
This morning -28 Janesville WI 04 Jetta 2.0 gas 260,000 was not happy. Love all the videos!!!
I am a big big big merc fan...but the Pontiac engine+exhaust sound man✌✌✌🤘💪👌👌
The black diesel sounds like an F-250 on startup! Wicked!
Lmbo
Nice video, I love seeing diesel Mercedes!
Bless your frozen hearts! When I lived in Alaska the construction folks left their equipment running 24/7 during the coldest times! We had to install block heaters and plug them in, every housing unit had an electrical outside post, when we shut our cars down or you wouldn’t have a chance of starting them! There was as much ice on the inside of the windows as on the outside so you had to install plastic air pockets inside to help prevent that. Never want to have to deal with that again!
don't you wait for the glow plug light to go away before you start the car (you probably do though), I live in iceland hand have the same car, it's not as cold here right now but I have never had a problem with starting it, but when it gets cold I just have to wait for the glow plugs a little longer
looks like your injector nozzles are shot! lots of black smoke on cold start is a sign of improper atomization. My CDI with a low battery started in the same temperatures after about .8 sec of cranking.
LUCKILY i know a certain channel that just uploaded a diy guide on how to rebuild your CDI injectors. *COUGH COUGH* ;)
I'm going with bigger injectors one way or another or I would definitely rebuild them. I still watched your video though, haha
@@LegitStreetCars Where are you getting the bigger injectors from, or a link on some info? I think mine might be leaking too and I figure why not upgrade as well
LegitStreetCars you didn’t watch his channel enough. You are hurting those pistons even as a daily driver. Fix those injectors please. And stop making ice under the tires. 😉 I used to live near you and now I’m in Minnesota. Don’t gun the gas on packed snow. We all know that. 😁
Would start of with the obvious one, glow plugs.
Also check that the fuel heater is functioning... if not, you’re trying to start that poor thing on diesel that simply won’t flow right.
Makes me think back to my old 1978 Mercedes 300D ..How I would cycle the key a few times and you could actually look under the hood and see the old glow plug metal loop linking them all glow fire red! It actually had the original glow plus until I sold it in 2003..Mine had the engine idle speed knob to raise the engine speed for cold starts..I guess newer ones don't have or need such old fashioned knobs haha
Your car collection is wild man !
i like the fact that he is still working! instead of becoming a full-time "youtuber"
Thats because he likes not only "testing", but work on cars
This didn’t age all that well
Do you guys have winter Diesel fuel?
We have it in the mountains over winter. Apparently diesel fuel gums up when it’s below freezing
Wormy in the 80’s 90’s the diesel would gum up but the diesel of today doesn,t gum up
@@mrcobra7878 oh ok interesting
We buy "Alpine diesel" during winter but only around mountain areas
The diesel fuel additive is called antiwax agents
Yes they have winter diesel there
Glad you survived the chill with the rest of us
Yes, last week at the cottage in Ottawa, Ontario. After standing for three days, no block heater, - 28 C, my 2014 glk bluetech. Push the start button, 6 seconds, 4 turnovers, she starts. I was impressed.
Did you replaced glow plugs of black e320?
You should check glow plugs relay too.
My diesel had cold start issues, also felt like the clutch was slipping, it turned out to be the glowplug module, so it is well worth checking. About the same price as 4 glowplugs.
56 is San Diego, it is cooold here! ;)
Always 60 in San Diego.
Hi Alex. I live there too. My wife's BMW was putting up an error about the battery so I had to go out in the snow and -20degree temps in my 2015 V8 Mustang.... and it did great !
The TA sounds amazing. Can't wait to turbo my 03 GMC Envoy 5.3
I miss the AMG and videos about it ..
DIESEL❤️
Hello from Chicago and yes it was cold this morning when I got up it said -22F temp.
I thought this was an episode of shameless
going through a warm snap up here and enjoying it :D
sorry about sending my cold weather down there
Just another sunny day in the windy chill city! 👌🏼
One of the injectors must be faulty on the black car. Do the leak off test and see which injector is faulty. Swap it with one from the silver car but don't tell the new owner.
I agree on a bad injector but I can't taint the silver car. It runs too good
I drive a London taxi in the UK and it really struggled to start below 32f as you say in the USA. It uses a common rail engine and I had a leak test done and one of the injectors was bad. Fitted a new injector and now it starts up in the cold no problem. Forget about the heater plugs.
Do you have "Easy START" IN THE USA?
If it was a fuel pressure issue it wouldn't fire at all so it's probably not excessive injector leak
@@Br1anuk Is that where you flick the key and it completes the start process?
Dude, why didn't you plug the car in? Block heater, fuel treat......please don't kill that engine
Wondering if the even have block heaters.
Have you considered fitting a auxiliary heater, some Mercs in Europe have a block heater, you can pre set it to warm the engine coolant. It would be a good project to retro fit. Thanks for the informative videos.
Nice starts! :) i like the black one. Always an adventure. :)
I miss the T/A
Wow! Is 93 Octane the most you can get with your gas? Here in Germany we have up to 102.. Your cars have definitelymore potential with it !
if i know well... (im from czech republic) in america they have from 87 to 93 tome like "premium" are 95 sometimes... but how you said, we have 95 like casual gassoline 98 for better cars "premium" and 102 on some gasstations
Guys, it's because North America uses a different system for determining the octane rating compared to Europe. In reality it's about the same
I googled a bit and found out that the fuel is really a lot worse out there in the us than in some parts of Europe. It’s fascinating to see because I always fuel my car with 102 octane and i can safely recommend it to everybody
xJonathan6405 no the fuel is worse than in germany
xJonathan6405 its like centimeters bro... its a universal rating
Looks cold. Stay safe. Nice and warm down here in south of France. We did have cold winter in germany around -20. By the way there we had winter diesel a kind of cold weather mix to stop it getting to thick and the oil the same.
Almost happy to hear a little belt/pulley whine from the E55. My 1990 Prizm does it too. Figured it was age.
dude, its minus 60c here In Canada, we broke some records too. Your going to have to put a ether start on the diesels haha.
That's crazy!!!
@@LegitStreetCars we had one of idiot contractor run a diesel skid steer dry, its was a 86 model, and it was -25c. He could get it started. So I went and rented a new 2017 bobcat skid steer. I hooked my jeep up to the 86, cranked it over, kept on the ether start and after about 5 goes she fired right up haha. The old farmers used to use the ether start if they got bogged down or stuck, if the dealers ever found out the equipment was run like that they would void the warranty haha
Sorry, Canada . . . you're in your own league.😳😵
@@GIGABACHI haha us and the Russians
with minus 60 you guys have to run your engines all night to keep from damaging them?
I did a video doing the same on my 65 Econoline yesterday it was not too successful
Looking forward to the diagnosis and repair vid on the black CDI! Stay warm Alex!
Thanks brother!
@@LegitStreetCars Never noticed the cool plate on the Trans AM "ONE K HP" Nice!
Yeah started my diesel Merc last week during a +46 degree Celcius day down here in South Australia first time no problems 😅 (car outside temp gauge read +52degC)
Love the channel. Enjoy the cold up there 😵
Lmao I’m so sorry for you Chicago folk. It’s been sunny and been in the 70s this week in SoCal but it’s raining today smh
I hate you, haha.
check glowplugs, they can still be bad even if no check engine light
I don't know what it is about cold starts, but I sure do love them 🙂
Right there with ya! -28 this morning in the NW burbs. Stupid cold. My winter Subie made noises I've never heard a car make.
Weird looking tractor...
Use Celsius and the metric system, please. You have viewers around the world.
@coco nut haha simple answer, Sir! Muricans are illiterate...
@@JuniorJr... America is the best
Well, I live in south Sweden so we don't get too cold in the winter but I used to have a 1983 w123 240D and it always started -24*c was no bigger problem just a few more turns on the starter and it was running! Love the old diesel Benz
The black diesel is my favorite. It sounds amazing!
That global warming can kick in anytime now...
It’s is over here in Australia. New record 47 degrees Celsius last Thursday in Adelaide :(
@@lengerer Godddamn 47 degrees? Wish I was there, its -3 degrees here in The Netherlands...so fucking cold😂
Pretty sure global warming caused the polar vortex.

@Chris D'oulmeth 😂😂😂 sorry bro
Having a good battery is is alfa and omega on these cars.Im actually suprised that you even got started the black one after so many tries, usually those first tries drains so much battery that every other try is pointless, but I guess you have a quite good battery in that car.
Good video!
Thanks for the video. I know very little about Diesel engines and for some reason wonder if the worked fine in the COLD weather.
Oh yeah im from Chicago to its been cold this week cant wait to go snow plow tonight lol.
Oh god, I remember that! I used to live on the Northwest side near the corner of Addison and Austin on a street called Eddy. I live in L.A. now. Don't miss those winters.
Oh man!! I felt that pain. It was bad weather !
-30c in Alberta. Thank goodness for fresh batteries and I let it cycle a few times.
I daily my '06 C55, in the winter the coldest ever was -4F. Usually in Canada the average temperature in the winter is around 14F. The Benzo never let me down yet, the steering occasionally gets very heavy. ODO is at 120,000 miles.
Awesome yay for the 2019 Polar Vortex 🌀❄🌀❄🌀❄
Loved all the cranking on the black car! Would love to see an inside view of that too
Injector or new glow plugs needed , cool vid👍🏻 love a cold start
If you have the V 6 diesel and you find difficult to start I would suggest the glow plug relay it’s fixed on the left hand side as you open the bonnet.
Good luck 😉
Thanks for the video! What are your thoughts on the ML 320 CDI (W164)? What about the W163? Keep up the great work!
That’s a classic old diesel start up sound. 👌
I’m ready for some more content one of my favorite channels 🤙🤙
Oh man I'd love to pump out more videos. One day, one day. Thanks so much for watching
Hey Alex I’ve been looking at a couple different Mercedes and was wondering if it would be ok to email you or dm you about what you think
NICE!!! -18 def. F in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in my 83 W123 a few years back ;)
I was having the same starting issues with my 2006 E320 CDI with anything below 30 degree weather. The glow plug control module ended up being the culprit. But now I have ABC problems (right side sunk) because I had to drive my SL55 in the below zero weather and apparently the ABC doesn't like the COLD either.
I had a 1980 Mercedes 240D. It did *not* like cold weather even a little bit. Anything below 32 F and it absolutely refused to start unless I had remembered to plug in the block heater. I checked *everything.* The battery, the starter, the glow-plugs. It was all normal. It just didn't like even a little cold. Crazy.
Living in Naples Florida, the coldest overnight temps I've ever seen are in the low 40s. Because my GLC is garaged, it's never been started below 50 degrees. Right now, Feb 1st @ 1:13pm it's 81.6 on my Lanai, but pool is at a chilly 67!!
Enjoy you're videos Alex. My E320CDI sat quite a while and started OK in minus 27 Degree Canadian Weather with no Issues. Now to clarify Wind Chill does NOT affect Vehicles just Humans.
Reminds me of my self everytime i start up my car in the winter
Yeah looks like you're getting the same cold spell we're getting here in Southern Ontario. My gas C300 with the M272 fired up no issue in -37 celsius (-35F) but the power steering pump didn't sound too happy for the first bit.
Damn, did not think that Trans Am was going to start! Had me thinking it wouldn't turn over at first lol
Coldest ever for me has been -40celcius here in Alberta Canada. My 2002 VW Golf tdi (diesel) sounds horrible when its that cold. Best thing I've done is install a coolant recirculating heater. Leave it plugged in over night and when you go to start it the engine is nice and toasty!
I checked the temperature with my temp gun and the valve cover and block were sitting around 40-50* Celsius. I suggest installing one in your Mercs.
Make sure to let us know what is wrong with the black car and how you diagnosed it! Great channel! Thanks
Run an OBD scan on the black Merc for the glow plugs. I had a Citroen diesel that belched black smoke on start up on cold mornings. All 4 plugs were shot but it would still eventually start, once warm it ran fine, you'd never know the glow plugs were dead. A faulty injector won't help matters though.
Its nearly 100F here in Melbourne, Australia. We are getting by.
Mine started right up this day, ‘05 W203. Live in the west ‘burbs
Good video champ! I hate my CDI in the snow... Stupid open diff + esp traction control really suck!
Try winter tires. Makes a huge difference.
Ofcourse im using winter tires, I live in Iceland.
245-45-17 ;)
When the tires spin a triangle with a ! lights in the dash on my E320 CDi. Once in WV skiing it was -2 in the morning, started right up. I left it running while I went skiing. Ordered new key other day $278.
I read that cold starting an old diesel car ''takes'' off like 2000km from the engine. Its just really bad making the pistons work when so cold, they actually ''scratch'' the surfice around them while doing so.
Is it true?
Greetings from Norway and a proud w124 '92 owner :)
lol just like my Ml320 this morning. gunna be cold tomorrow, can't wait to see if she starts.
Hey LegitStreetCars, loving your vids here in Birmingham UK. I’ve got a snapped glow plug in my R class OM642 engine, any advice on removal or tool kits to do the job?
Have you considered that it might have been an issue with the fuel turning into gel? I don't know how much -25 is in Celsius but below -20 celsius diesel turning into a gel becomes a problem that gets worse and worse the lower the temperature gets, unless it has a special additive
Oil and block heaters are your friend. Kats sells magnetic stick on types perfect for installing during cold snaps
So satisfying!
Awesome video! We need MOAAAAAR
I have started a 2003 Renault Laguna 2.2DCI 150HP at -30 and my record is starting a 2002 Citroen Saxo 1.5D at the same temperature. I lived in Chicago and drove a 2000 VW Jetta 1.9 TDI always started at any Chicago weather. You keep your maintenance the car will start any day
Diesel mercedes will always start i live in Bosnia we have here realy cold days last one was 2.7 CDI w210 now is w 220 3.2 CDI never have problem with start
Love rapairing MB cars
Nice video
You using trickle tender chargers? I recently installed some new AGM batteries very pleased.
We had last week - 25 celsius and my Om642 w211 mercedes started very nicely but I had new glow plugs
I walked out to the mail box in some basket ball shorts and flip flops here in Florida that day. ;-)
The black one needs new glow plugs. My 2.0 HDi would start like that in the winter until I replaced all 4 glow plugs.
I learned, 4matic only for Chicago.
Was tired of getting sick in the driveway or taking a 1/2 trying to get onto the driveway
