+RobMorane I you don't count the water between the islands, then it's almost the same size. There are a lot of houses on the hills. That's part of the city.
What made SA's map perfect despite being huge is that it spread out 3 cities in different corners - therefore, it's "wasted space" (aka, deserts, bushlands, forests, etc;) was used as "transitional" spaces, giving you reasons for going through them and thus allowing said spaces to add to the experience. This would have also worked well in an online component. Whereas V's map was basically one huge city at the bottom, and giving no real reasons for people to leave it, especially in online modes where most would just congregate there.
San Andreas Is objectively smaller in terms of area, but it has much more variety and places where there are actually different buildings, tasks, etc. In addition, there are the role-playing elements and side activities all over the map, which makes them even more alive and subjective, or from the gameplay possibilities, bigger. Without the huge lake, empty mountains and a lot of grassland, gta 5 would be smaller, which is why it feels like it. Because the additional area has no use and almost looks as if it had only been installed quickly so that a predecessor 9 years older does not have a larger area.
I'm still amazed how big the map is in 14 years old game called Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Even GTA IV's map still amazes me, because how detailed it is. GTA V's map is big, but it does not have same atmosphere like GTA SA

The gta v map feels so small, with SA and IV you could be on one of the island or in one of the city's and it would feel like you were 200 miles from the other side of the map, gta v I feel like I know every inch of the island within a few hours of playing, I still don't know all the street of IV or all the hidden paths in SA and I played both those games for years
pavv I haven't played a GTA game since SA, but I do own GTA V. With SA I believe it is because there are a lot more "city" areas whereas V just has the single LS area. There was also more to do in those areas that kept you from trekking halfway across the map for a single mission. The way the routes connected those places also helped to make it feel much larger. Really like SA, would be awesome to see a remake on the new engine.
+Alan Camacho gta iv and sa have same size nobody can do it proprely because if you do cars in gta sa they are faster and running is diferent but i think rockstar sad that they have same size when i dont know when gta iv launched
Wrong. GTA IV is way smaller than GTA SA. Compare both maps. GTA SA is a large square. Play both games and see how long can you get to the edge of the map.

I think what makes them feel like real and cool is how in games there are ads, in world brandings, cars own brandings how gta games have details in every aspect, you can make tons of videos and be speculating, taking information even from radio and radio by itself has lore put in it, that just feels like actual universe together, I mean, there are even three universes.
I wish modders would recreate the San Andreas map with GTA5 physics and vehicles and stuff. It's about a quarter the size, so that's still plenty of room for planes (if you hide the interior world _below_ exterior world, then you won't have to worry about that either).
Always wanted to know the size of comparison of GTA Vs map to others. Although it's huge, a lot of the areas aren't used. I prefer a map like San Andreas but it would have been nice if GTA V had a larger city area or even a few more towns and villages like Sandy shores.
Yes, the GTAIV map is kinda small but we must keep in mind that it was the first HD map, with lots of deatails and interactive stuff, and I think it felt bigger becouse of slower cars and having to use the bridges to cross the islands.

San Andreas felt the biggest. Surprised to see GTA 4 map so similar in size to Vice City cause I knew Vice City like the back of my hand but couldn’t navigate Gta 4 without waypoints.
Nah GTA 4 feels boring the same old city, buildings and cars no deserts or country side or mountains and in GTA 4 you can't even buy properties, people like it for the storyline but after story is finished it gets boring unlike other GTA which have gang wars and all. GTA 4 you can't even drive tanks!
@@wfanking1187 The thing about GTA 5’s map and gameplay is it’s all somewhat of an illusion. True there’s more variety to the landscape as well as more ways to traverse it and things to do, but it feels more like a movie set and the gameplay’s more stale and arcade like compared to GTA 4’s map & gameplay. GTA 4 had a superior physics engine to GTA 5 which made everything more satisfying… -Blow people up and their bodies go flying in a far more realistic manner. -Cars have a weighty feel to them which makes them feel more authentic, pull off a drift around a corner and you just get this satisfying feel which is absent in GTA 5. -Get into a fist fight and it feels more like a mini-boxing game, in GTA 5 you might as well be Superman when it comes to fist fights they’re so boringly easy, there’s no threat. -Shooting an NPC in GTA 4 again is way more satisfying and physically realistic cause of it’s superior physics software. -Finally the map, now I’m not gonna claim the GTA 4 map is superior to GTA 5, I agree it is somewhat monotonous, but it did still feel more immersive by having more unique accessible interiors, hidden secrets, and even underground cities within the abandoned subway tunnels. GTA 5 is big and vast true, yet it still manages to have this odd empty cardboard movie set feel to it. The perfect GTA game for me would be an amalgamation of GTA 4 & 5 with a dash of Vice City thrown in for style, characters, and setting. Hopefully GTA 6 will prove to be that game.
Hi John, I'll try to answer you with my bad english. For the first gta, the scale is not very accurate because it is difficult to make a report to the reality in a 2D game (in this case I relied on the width of roads to get an idea of the size of the map). About the 3D gta, I relied on the statistics of the game (in the pause menu where you can see for example the distance traveled by car). I could therefore have a measure of distance I have carried on a map image of the game. Then I resized the image for one pixel per meter. I then select the playing surface (I did not count water areas) to have a measure pixel² I converted in km². Why certain area may seem strange to you and in contradiction with other sources is that I did not take into account the water areas (river, ocean, lake ...)
+4FuN gaming problem with that is that cars dont have same speeds and rockstar sad that gta v is 3 times bigger than sa and same for gta iv also they are same size there can be mistakes as rage and other engine for sa are very diferent
gta 4 is the best. Loved different city areas, neighborhoods with different gangs. There are only a couple like these in gta 5 and they look rather artificial/post-hoc. I loved exploring all the streets in gta 4, since it's difficult to memorize. Adding wilderness to gta 5 was okayish, but the city should not have been cut, since it became boring.

Why does GTA SA map looks bigger then GTA 5
Because your eyes are broken, get them checked out
Zedss Gamer Hm, I see your loving the Gta v? Well, actually Gta V is smaller in reality then "San Andreas" half of Gta V map is ocean that is nothing.. an that's like 20.3kms of water.. An the an the so Gta Sa is 29.8Km? So gta v is very small is reality.. oh wait An for "SA" ocean it's only 4.1km so get my point?
Really bad attempt at trolling
Curry DRider have you ever played GTA 5 before?
Curry DRider
Beacouse SA has tree cities, even gta 5 map looks small cuz it's just an big island, that big island is huge!

This is amazing. Love GTA so much!
Can we appreciate that San Andreas map was released on a ps2? That map still holds up today as one of the best open world maps ever
I wish modders would recreate the San Andreas map with GTA5 physics and vehicles and stuff. It's about a quarter the size, so that's still plenty of room for planes (if you hide the interior world _below_ exterior world, then you won't have to worry about that either).
Nixel www.gta5-mods.com/maps/grand-theft-auto-v-san-andreas
GTA IV Physics are way too better
Your English is terrible
Nixel it's actually more or less 2/3 the size of gta V map
Nixel GTA 4 Physics, not GTA 5s, it sucked.
We have 2 years and we will watch how GTA 6 map is big!
I can’t believe Portland is the side of Vice City’s full lower west side
0:40 what de heck is the island on the left doing there?
Im not sure, I think It may be an Island for a Observation Tower.
I came back after 5 years homies, where is mommy man?
She's dead,bro
God, Mount Chiliad is just as extensive as the entire Liberty City of GTA IV.
Funny how this video is 9 years old and is still accurate
Thank you. Vice City will always be my favorite. Then San Andreas, then gta 3, 4, and then 5.
Mine is Vice City,4,San Andreas,5,3,Lcs, Chinatown wars.
Others are crap. Some are underrated like Chinatown wars. A forgotten game 🥲🥲🥲🥲
GTA san andreas best map ever
You guys clearly don't understand how big Los Santos of GTA V really is. It can fit Los santos from gta sa San fierro and las venturas combined.

Woow, i can't believe it. GTA SA is #2 Big Maps. 😁
Can we just talk about how the GTA3 theme song is amazing
The fact that San Andreas was on PS2 hardware with so much packed into it still amazes me.
San Andreas felt the biggest. Surprised to see GTA 4 map so similar in size to Vice City cause I knew Vice City like the back of my hand but couldn’t navigate Gta 4 without waypoints.
This size comparison is kinda inaccurate so i wouldn't trust it 100%
Nah GTA 4 feels boring the same old city, buildings and cars no deserts or country side or mountains and in GTA 4 you can't even buy properties, people like it for the storyline but after story is finished it gets boring unlike other GTA which have gang wars and all.
GTA 4 had a superior physics engine to GTA 5 which made everything more satisfying…
-Blow people up and their bodies go flying in a far more realistic manner.
Great video! But I'm curious; how did you calculate the size comparison? The GTA IV map seems too small to me.
Why certain area may seem strange to you and in contradiction with other sources is that I did not take into account the water areas (river, ocean, lake ...)
also he zoom big on gt5 and smaller in gta sa
+4FuN gaming problem with that is that cars dont have same speeds and rockstar sad that gta v is 3 times bigger than sa and same for gta iv also they are same size there can be mistakes as rage and other engine for sa are very diferent

Atleast I have one who still plays them like mee
gta 4 is the best.
Nah GTA 4 feels boring the same old city, buildings and cars no deserts or country side or mountains and in GTA 4 you can't even buy properties, people like it for the storyline but after story is finished it gets boring unlike other GTA which have gang wars and all. GTA 4 fanboys are depressed teenagers who never even played other GTAs and like 4 based on game play videos, some kids even admitted to me!
Gta 4 map is the worst. Absolutely no variety.
@@wfanking1187 yup, the fun ends pretty soon after finishing the story, but the city atmosphere is great. GTA 5 feels plastic and lacking character.
@@vyshu7 it's atmospheric and is filled with busy life. Gta 5 feels plastic. I guess I also prefer places like new York to places like San Diego or whatever
why does the map of vice city have an extra island?
Yeah, i'm asking myself that
GTA San Andreas defintely feels the biggest... Multiple cities, the different environments, traversing the map at a slow speed. There's an illusion that the map is huge when it's realistically less than 2/3 of GTA V's map, a map that feels small.
rather play gta 5 in the sa map

Rockstar Games should have added a Countryside to GTA IV.
It was originally planned but was scrapped
I like gta5 because theres loads of stunt locations
Gta Sa is actually the biggest. Rockstar even said 42.35 Miles Gta V 81.78 Miles but 51% of that 80 miles is water. 40.78 Gta sa 42.45 miles. :3
Also GTA SA feels much much bigger too thanks to its 3 islands, different police departments, landscape, side missions...etc

GTA V has 80 square km
