Mixing & Mastering by me 🙃
Wonderful song
FFS thank you for finally using some actually creative music in an audio nerd video. Really cool song and masterful singing.
If anyone was wondering why it’s so challenging to finish their mixes, it’s because the music isn’t there.
Great performances can survive a bad mix, but bad performances will never be mixable.
Nah, with modern technology any performance can be great. It's just the context that is wrong. Meaning that for example bad vocals might not fit the project you're working with, but they can easily fit something else perfectly.
Thank you for choosing such an incredibly good singer and original song to compare these mics.
The song and singer are great; and she'd probably sound a lot better through my Rodes NT2A than I do! The C-80 sounds like it could be a good replacement when circumstances allow, so thank you very much for the review.
Well, I haven't got the ears for this. To me, these microphones were virtually indistinguishable, except for the AKG, which sounded a bit cloudy compared to the others, and the slightly more pronounced sibilance from the Lewitt. But at least Wytse didn't contradict those observations. More significantly: what an incredible vocalist!
That AKG looks like it has wear, that "cloudy" high end is not normal.
On a pretty good condition, It's a swiss army knife of a microphone, by far the best. U47 is very expensive but it's designed to tame vocals, it works like a natural compressor, kinda like hearing an U87 on a piano.
I don't think the Sony mic is good value vs the Lewitt when it's nearly twice the price for such a small difference in audio quality. I think there are better budget mics out there.
So, the U47 is still the winner for vocals. The Sony mics are more sensitive to transients and overall dynamics, they have that ASMR quality to them. For the loud parts of the song, i think the Neumann does better than the Sony mics (the voice gets a bit buried in the mix).
Thats crazy.. I became serious about engineering and mixing just a few years ago.
It's absolutely insane what you can hear just after the first 6 months of really doing nothing other then intense listening lol
I´ve been running the C-80 on my latest sessions and I love it! Great quality, sounds mix-ready straight out the box, don´t have to use much post-processing to get the sound I want. Worth every penny imo
That would be a great in-depth review if someone would take the c-80 and see how it blends with different colors of pre's . Neve, API, UAD's Unison, even a tone beast lol.
I wana hear what color does to clarity like that.
Rianne Wilbers vocals are from another planet! Amazing performance! Great video!
Gorgeous performance! All the mics sound great.
That’s a great voice and a lovely production, like the combination.
The c80 is perfect here. Open, detailed, balanced. Awesome song and performance 👍
Yeah, for this source, I think the C80 sits best in the mix without post-processing.
Excellent comparison! I was surprised how clearly the differences could be heard even through You Tubes audio compression. I love the sound and ballance of that Sony C-80!
Nice! Very cool performance from a talented vocalist as well. Never did Sandstorm sound like this.
I had to share this video to my peoples because of the song! Great job on the mix as well my guy! I just may prep to cop this mic too.
Absolutely brilliant vocal take!
Honestly, perhaps appropriately, I couldn't care less about which mic is used. It's not like any of them will make or break the song.
I think as a vocalist myself, I do notice it. It's like how I can't tell guitars apart by ear. Probably less important for the listener, but as musicians we want everything to be just how we like it.
@@NoOffensePies Oh, don't get me wrong, I didn't mean they sound the same. it's just that when the track is released, there's no way I would ever think "if they only had used the Neumann instead of that AKG mic, the track would have been so much better". As for having the right tools when recording it's a messy jungle of opinion, placebo and things that makes the sound objectively better. It's what comes out in the end that's important though and the end result will be better if everyone is as comfortable as they can be in production. :)
Nice to see some C-100 Content .. it's one of my fav mics since years.
I sold my Manley Reference and later on even the U87 and never looked back.
waaw ...love the performance /tx for review
Great song & performance. I'm happy with what I heard from the C-80. Definitely a great choice for a low-to-mid-priced LDC. Thanks.
U47 is the classic warm smooth sound we all are so used to hearing, but I really like the precise definition of the C-80 and the C-100 especially at that price comparison. Really well done video. the 414 had that low mid distorty thing that reminded me of why I sold my 414s. The Lewitt is cool but I prefer the high end of the sonys. Context is everything...
I was so distracted by the amazing vocal performance by Rianne Wilbers that every mic sounded great! -Tom
Very cool presentation!
I always liked the C-100 on instruments. Especially on piano. They do add that bit more airy sound but in a very pleasant way.
Will look into the C-80.
I think they are really close. The Lewitt had more detail, but in a not so nice way. The Neumann had more detail in a pleasant way.
U47 Sounded amazing, lot's of detail
I think something people forget when searching for the condensing mic that will make them sound professional is that it doesn’t matter if you have the highest quality mic if the environment you’re recording in isn’t good the mic will ultimately sound like garbage without heaps of post production to hopefully sound decent. Just my two cents I switched to the sm7b with cloud lifter and saw instant improvement with less work
U47 sounded great, smooth and somehow more correct and pleasant sounding than the rest. AKG414 sounded poor on some of the sung sections, but worked really nicely on the little mouth noises percussive section. Lewitt had some unpleasant harshness in the upper mids pop up in a few places. Honestly couldn’t hear a huge difference between the Sonys, maybe the C80 was lacking some richness. Makes me wonder if a bit of careful eq could bring things closer or if there are certain characteristics of the mics that can’t be eq’d out.
P.s. I love this sort of shootout, nice work to all involved.
This is great! As an engineer that regularly uses C-800's I've been very interested in these as an alternative.
I'm always impressed with the music and musicians coming out of the Netherlands. Excellent video and comparison!
PS: I also think that is really great for Sony to be getting back into microphones again. In my long career, I have been owning and using Song mics for nearly 30 years.
%100 agree about the Lewett. I heard exactly what you were saying, the lewett is more lively in the top end.
Leuk dat je eens een microfoon uitkiest voor een review!
Great to hear some totally different music in a comparison video than the usual middle of the road stuff. 👍🏻
I must say, with my cheap earbuds in I couldn't hear much difference, if at all. Maybe the lewitt and C414 a bit more highs. But only because I've heard them before.
A mic is probably not a thing for the average listeners.
They all sound good
Well, first of all, that girl can SING...wow...
To me (and I am listening on my studio monitors HEDD-07mk2 and the sub8) the differences between them all is incredibly subtle...the differences show themselves mostly in the high mids and highs and are highlighted by sibilance and sharp consonants...the AKG was for me too harsh overall as compared to the others, while the U47 was smoother than the rest, and notably so...the Sonys and the Lewitt are pretty much interchangeable past that...
My overall takeaway from this comparison? Set a budget and buy a microphone from a proven manufacturer that fits it...
WOW! What a voice!!!
I actually stopped caring what microphone has been used and was admiring the singer. What a song!! Bravo.
Damn the light look good with those monitors back there 🔥
Wonderful song! ❤
yeahhhh someting what my old ears can make the difference! thanks for it!
For us at the other end listening we are influenced by our gear. In my acoustically dead listening environment using Tannoy speakers I preferred the sound of the C-100. The U-47 sounded surprisingly dull. I liked the AKG least I think. Interesting results.
Amazing performance by Rianne!!🤘😎
Brilliant Singer with a very haunting voice
Great music!! I liked the Lewitt the best - I am on the "Love It" side of the top end response I guess lol
killin it
c80 blended well with the mix it sound more polished and more defined also it cut through the mix you can feel the vocal is full and heavy with a good top end
Do you recommend a pop filter with the c-100 two-way condenser microphone ?
Is it possible that you can share vocal tracks so we can download and tweak a little?
I've got a pair of AKG C414s, they are my go to mics for drum overheads, acoustic guitar and vocals.
If you can get hands on a AKG C414EB with the original brass capsule. Fantastic microphone. To me the best all round microphone EVER made. Yes, been working with lots of other well known industry standard microphones. It is that good!
wow great music....awesome singer!
great mic for the price indeed :) great comparison and singer.
Between the Shure Sm7b and the Sony C80, which is better for recording urban voices?
In order of preference: U47, C-80, 414, C-100, 440. The U47 was by far the best one overall but her particular vocal sounds very good with the C-80. 414 is a darker mic, it's one of the best out there but for her vocal it brings out some negative qualities. The C-100 is nice but it has too much unnecessary detail, the 440 is pretty harsh. I had a 440 and I sold it to buy that exact 414 model, which is darker but more usable, especially in a less than ideal room, because the 440 picks up a lot of flutter echo at the very top. Usually condensers with great top end are expensive but the C-80 is impressive at that price range.
On Amazon UK the c-80 is twice the price of the 440. I took notes and basically agree with your findings. Thanks.
hmm... so there is a lot of difference in pricing depending on where you're buying it?
@@Whiteseastudio Here in the Netherlands the average price of the C-80 is 580 (including Thomann) and the 440 sits around 260.
The 540 subzero is a closer competitor at 600 than the 440 pure or even the 441 flex (370)
The track is very cool and unusual 🎉
What a great song and performance! But yea the U47 is the absolute easy winner…….. cheers and nice vid
Good work and interesting song. I prefer the Sony C80 for her voice on this song. The voice sound a little more articulate.
Nice video and thank you for sharing it with us. But if i may make one remark. It would be easier to compare the microphones if you only hear her voice.
Members have access to the files
impressive... but does it sandstorm? i think i'd like the 440 best btw...
c-100 for me. Spectacular singer and song!!!
I think the Lewitt had a very "podcast" / "radio" vibe comparably speaking. Like it had that warmth that you really want for a good voice over or dialogue recording but not as suited for musical vocals. Also that was an exceptional recording. It was the first time I've really heard something you have worked on and I can now safely say you have the chops to back up your opinions. Nice work to the other artists too.
the 47 is awesome, like the C100 more than the C80....more precise.....very good review! Thanks a lot
I'd like to listen a dry comparison sing/speech performances. and maybe able to download the raw recording. Is really not so noticeable from a mix
The dry recordings are available to members :-)
@@Whiteseastudio Oh ok right :)
I really like how Sony C-100 and Neumann u-47 sound like. Lovely. BTW reverbs are making small differences even less noticeable on the UA-cam with its audio compression, pls do a dry test next time.
my thoughts
The way you perceive bass actually has a lot to do with the high frequencies.
Really up front bass has a lot of highs (but I'm sure you know this).
Maybe the accentuation in the high frequencies is giving more life to the bass range, and that's why the bass sounded different between the C-80 and C-100.
You said the bass was "more pronounced" and that sounds like a high frequency boost to me. The harmonics of the notes are coming through more clearly through the upper spectrum, reinforcing the fundamental.
Psychoacoustics!
But I'm just thinking out loud :D
FWIW I liked your voice with the Sony C-80 better than with the Lewitt LCT 1040, which had too much saturation for my ears recently (which might be a setting issue).
Maybe the tube is going 🤔
but it's so lovely tha super big Lewitt 1040 microphone at 9:07 so is good to show in the video :)
I didn't want to use the 1040 in the comparison since it's a tube microphone, but I would have loved to hear her voice through it!
@@Whiteseastudio Yep, I meant to show in generical video like you are doing recently, not in this comparison of course, different technology and price :) But first time I tried it I felt in love. Anyway, great mix and great performance, my congrats to all people who worked for this demo.
It dawned upon me how close the LCT440 is to a C414. So is there such a thing as "austrian sound"? I could not pick them apart in this mix. Sony C-80 and C-100 had this same "airy" tone. Not sibilant but crispy. Like if the capsules were calibrated to sound equal in the higher frequencies. Did you EQ while listening to the C-80? Or going back and forth also when mixing?
The EQ was based on the C-80... As far as I remember right now, I only did 1 thing, and just 1-2 dB... Nothing special...
Is not the capsule, is maybe the overall design of the microphone and how it captures the air from the voice.
In the mix all the mics sound almost identical to me, which is almost always the case.
Please review the new Purafied plug-in SLP 538 EQ
Interesting! My personal preference after just listening before your comments: U47 was nicer than C80/C100. The U47 had this nice lower midrange that embedded perfectly with the track, while still being very clear. I could not distinguish the C80 and C100 to be honest. Both worked really, really well though! I'd be perfectly happy with that. After that comes the Lewitt - which seemed overly bright. I would try to tame the highs a bit here, with that mic the vocals felt like they stick out from the overall mix balance. And lastly (to my surprise) the 414 - it seemed "unclear" compared to the other mics. Not bad overall, but still noticably worse IMO, to the point where I don't think you can push it to the same level as the others with additional/different processing. The C80 seems like a really good value. Nice!
I think I agree with you.
Isn't about the lower midrange. It just lacks air vs the Sony mics, the U47 isn't as responsive to transients and the vocals sound smoother, like a natural compressor.
good music by the way.
Next time how about testing C-800 😍😍
Regarding the 414 in this video. It stood out as being the least good sounding mic in this video for whatever reason. However, my 414 TL II from the late 90s has an incredibly accurate pickup pattern. By that, it rejects things outside of the pattern. I've used them on drum overheads where loud amps were beside the drums and the amount of bleed is just weirdly low. Like, I was standing there next to that screaming guitar rig and it's barely in the overheads. Mine have the mechanical switches rather than the electronic switching in use today. Maybe the mic was "between" positions?
Also, that person can really sing fantastically.
The MIDS it's always the mids with the old mics, so sick of modern manufactures making overly bright mics because (they think) everyone wants that bright sound. The C-80 is a great sounding mic for a decent price and I'm honestly tempted to buy a pair. wipes the floor when paired against the 414, can compete with it's bigger brother and the Lewitt, but the U47 just SMOKES it, no real comparison there, would easily pick the 47 every day. Until I have $12,000 to blow... The C-80 is a dang fine mic.
The new Neumann U47 FET costs "only" about 3800 Euros. And if that's too much you can always get the TLM 102 or 103 for much less and still have a decent sound.
@@Fastvoice Yeah no interest in the FET mic, the tube has a completely different vibe in my experience, a new tube U47 is still gonna run ya 8K
That 414 from the video looks like it was so heavily used that needs maintenance. In reality, it doesn't that that air like the example from the video.
It's still the most iconic swiss army knife of a mic.
I'm confused by the usage of a track other than Sandstorm by Darude.
Love that Sony! Meanwhile, an *MXL 990 with red LED lights in the grille* just got delivered to my door, because $30 sale 🤦♂️🤷♂️😞
What is the name of the song here? Thank you in advance. Btw, Sony's mic is amazing! I have roughly 100 microphones and the C-80 is one to get for not only the size and ease but the multitude of practical uses with its clear results! Thank you for more videos! I hope when I am overseas that we finally get to meet! All the best!
i prefer by far the AKG C414 ULS, but as usual it's a matter of taste.... (oh and by the way SHE is an absolute talented singer !)
I got Lewitt LCT 440 and often have problem with sibilant vocals. Will be Sony better for these types of vocals? In my country C-80 has twice the price and I can easily afford it but is it worth? I'm searching microphone with "modern" sound.
Try JZ V67
That song was dope
Could you pls do more of these videos?
Really good Song btw 👌
I would love to, they are very expensive though 😅
@@Whiteseastudio okay I agree. What about sponsorship, but you are stil independent? I think you could go big like that.
Maybe review some Warm Audio stuff and compare them to the original. Think this will be very interesting
The Sony’s have a weird wooly low end, the AKG has a strange muffled top end roll off, the Lewitt sounds delightfully dead and boring, and the Neumann sounds perfect. I was surprised by this test!
I like the FET or Lewitt on her, but the C80 is impressive for the price 😃
Partial to the 414. I'm surprised that I didn't particularly like the U47 on her voice not particularly a fan of the Lewitt either. Not on her voice at least. The C-80 has a nice openness to it.
nice vocal
The 47 was #1 by a long shot, C414 number 2 and the rest a fairly distant but strong number 3
Don’t know about the mikes, but the song is great
Enough that I'm in the danger zone of geeking out in the audio swamp of absurdity but... (without diminishing myself or anyone else who might feel affected)... well, how petty and trivial it felt to even think about which microphone sounds best here. What song! And above all, what a singer! Forget the mic! If anything, this proves what really matters most. Not even the most expensive and best microphone in the world can match that..."I was not expecting this".
You had a slight error in your comparison: The C-100 is a double capsule design - the C-80 is a double membrane mic.
Awesome vocal performance! 🙌
The Sony C80 sounds great. I don't like the sound of the Lewitt LCT 440. The Neumann U47 sounds also great but different.
Each section of the song is a bit different vocally. I think each mic had its strengths and weaknesses depending on the style.
Those Sony’s are like clouds wrapped in silk.
Yes they are "better" but are they worth REALLY £xxx more, compared to not making the music you could be making. Great shoot out, even greater song, fantastic performance and brilliantly programmed music.
what a singer!!! wow!... OK the mics.. to me the C-80 took the cake.. more forward.. more finished.. more body, highs less sibilant and more air
Amazing vocalist! Amazing sound
C-100 for me but oh it's such a tiny difference that unless your studio is megabucks youll never ever notice ....but... the C-80 is way less than half the price of the C-100. About €560 for the C-80. Very good call. I want one and I would never use it!....but I could?....nah 🧡
I may be wrong, but I think it would be fair to mention in a somewhat prominent place that this microphone costs around 600 bucks.
What a great video, I am enjoying the review.... I have doubts about whether to purchase the Neuman Tlm 102 or Sony C80... I need help 🙏 😥
Sony!
It is sometimes scary, how the gap is slowly closing. My favourite was Lewitt and i was definately hoping to hear more breath from Neumann, but i think that UA-cam's audio processing slayed the fidelity. For compressed audio, Sony sounded very nice. You never know, when a young musican will release a hit, recorded in a bedroom with a 100€ microphone.
That happened years ago. Thats the dirty secret the industry won't tell you, plenty of hits made on budget mics
@@Newerasamearea Dirty secret? Is anyone trying to fool you when listening? This C-80 is still $500, which isn't nothing.
@@alexbreyer6921 he said budget mics. I was referring to budget mics. I don't understand your point. Juicy J, bryson tiller, boston, Solange..etc
you have a recording room? :D
I use Sound Vision Studio
I actually liked the Lewitt 440 Pure the best. Lol
