My all time favorite beat making daw next to FL. And it never really crashes ever. You can learn how to build and mix with a hardware set up. Audio tracks and automatic timestretch to tempo that's smooth
Great video Native Shades. Reason was my beat making DAW of choice between 2004 and 2015 before I moved on to Maschine. I made quite a few albums with it that I still get paid for to this day. I still have the old PC that I used Reason on so I can access my old files but ironically I now use the MPC which I didn't learn before back in the days because I was fast on Reason rewired with Cakewalk Sonar. Reason had stock sounds that was more than usable where as the MPC didn't have sounds, you had to sample your sounds in. I've now grown to appreciate taking time to sample and create my sounds and use hardware. I'll always look back fondly on those Reason/Sonar days but not going back
Word..Reason did have alot of great stock sounds back in the day..In the early 2000's it was pretty much the best daw behind Protools in alot of folks opinion..
@@DyReckProductions Remember they had ReCycle first which could time stretch samples, then ReBirth which was a software drum machine and then there was Reason a full blown software sequencer with built in instruments and racks to work with and then export your audio. They also were compatible with the Rewire function so it could be wired into another DAW for vocals and other audio to be added to the final mix. Logic and Cubase were really fighting for the number two spot for DAW here on this side of the Atlantic. On your side I hear that Sonar was popular but again Logic and Cubase were the two giants. Ableton, Fruity Loops (FL Studio) and Reason were the new kids on the block back then.
I've been making music with reason from 2001.. back then I had some hardware gear too, since PC's back in time wasn't feeling like powerful enough. After that I had to let my hardware go due to problems in life, but I still got reason and lots of plug ins with it and I still make music with it.
I love reason. Actually just started using Pro Tools as my main DAW only because of Reason as a rack inside of Pro Tools. Hey DyReck can you do Cakewalk, that's the DAW I started on back in like 1996.
I didn’t grow up with hardware and I think I found Reason about the same time that I found Ableton. For me, even though Ableton is powerful and has features that Reason don’t have I still prefer Reason (and I just love the rack and it’s cables, it thought me how to wire up a studio and now I have more HW-gear and rack units that I could dream of back then). I just find it inspiring and that is something that I don’t feel with Ableton, kind of feels like Ableton is a tool and Reason an instrument. I then tried Rebirth and I still keep an old computer for Rebirth, ReCycle and Aksys but Reason is the only DAW that I really like with Renoise on second place. It is easy to compare features but things has to feel right and spark creativity and that’s more important than the feature set.
I feel just like you. Got reason in 2004 and didn't ever use hardware but loved the hardware look and wiring. I've had pro tools and Ableton and got rid of them when reason added audio. Can't see myself using another Daw now.
I’m still using Reason 6 and Recycle. I really can’t get enough of those two programs they’re so good. And to be honest, I like the fact that you can’t load third party vst’s, allowing you to be more creative with what you have. I’m also a Live user. Been using Live since version 1. Live is totally awesome too, they both have their own use and appeal but when it comes to the sound of the effects, those in Reason sound way better imho. At least this old version I use. Live is catching up with their drum buss & roar plugins but Reason has been delivering forever. I read somewhere that the guy in charge of the overall sound in Reason is the guy who came up with the Nord Lead keyboards, and we all know how sweet those sounded! BTW bro your channel is so entertaining keep it up!
I love hearing your stories taking us through the vintage days of instruments we even get some of the fine history on how somethings got the way they were
Funny, I just pulled my old iMac out of the closet, reinstalled Snow Leopard (from 2009) and installed Reason 5 this afternoon. And yes, I paid for it back in the day.
@@DyReckProductions yeah dude you might want to do that! Like you said in the video, Reason sounds *amazing*. Thor is so badass. That’s why I went through so much trouble to get it back online! Peace man.
I just now set my white macbook with Reason 5 to the side with Reason 5. I still use it to sketch out my ideas if I want to do it super fast. My B system in my studio. Its still set up as my "MPC style midi rig. I am from that era in the 90s whenyou had to have a mpc or workstation keyboard, a rack of modules and adat or DA-88/38 machines with a mackie 24/8 console
If Reason was updated to include much improved audio editing to that of Protools for example, I would be very happy to use it exclusively as my DAW of choice.
Man, this was a dope and funny insight to Reason. I'used Reason since it dropped, from version 1 to 5 (Try before you buy copies...*Cough cough*) then finally bought Reason 11 after haven't making beats for a few years. I know it has limitations compared to other DAWs, but I stick with it cos I actually get a buzz when I use it. I look forward to using it like waiting for a delicious Thai meal. Other Daws I tried like Fruityloops (FL Studio),Cubase and Logic I just used cos that was what I was using, but with Reason I actually have fun messing about with sounds. I think the new owners are happy with it being a secondary product and are more focused as it being a plugin to other DAWs. Great work bro. Keep it up.
Awesome content! You never disappoint. Now you know you gotta do Emagic Logic Audio and the switch from PC to MAC only. Can’t wait to hear your take on that.
@@DyReckProductions Cool. Also please do a part 2 to this video. Talk about Rewire technology, the transition from Reason to Record, and then back to Reason. Changed their name from Propellerhead to Reason Studios. Then how they dropped Rewire to offer Reason as a VST. And…. Finally scalability for high res graphics (that still has issues with scrolling) but long overdue. You captured the essence of its history but it’s far more an interesting topic. You get into this, Logic Pro, and the DAW wars and your comments and shares will be off the charts…. especially with the way you deliver.
@@DyReckProductions Also you talked about how they wouldn’t allow 3rd Party plugins. Don’t forget that…. that was because they were trying to sell Rack Extensions. I NEVER bought their Rack Extensions. I primarily use Logic but had to update Reason when they offered it as a VST. Now they have the Reason+ were you pay $20 monthly.
Great video! It is crazy to me that they didn't have VST integration, being VST technology introduced by Steinberg. Their relationship was there judging by the ReCycle splash screen. I did went into Ableton back in the day because of that missing integration. As much as I loved Reason, at the time It didn't make any sense for them to make me use their synths having so much to explore out there.
I’ve used reason since 2007 as a slave to pro tools. Now, I do all my creative production on Reason. Been on Reason 10 for a minute. I have no need to upgrade to 11, since most of my sounds come from Arturia V8
Great review!!! You really captured the history of this, still great, software. But DAMN I feel old!! I remember Rebirth and Reason 3.0! Thanks for this video
I've been using Propellerhead's stuff since Recycle, Rebirth(and it's mods) was a great tool. but Reason has made a real revolution, still using it since R 1.0. It's a DAW of a chose for many artists. Dj Pierre, the inventor of acid-house and A Guy Called Gerald(the author of such anthems as "Voodoo Ray" and 808 State's track "Pacific State") are among them.
programs like Reason and Bitwig excel in sound design. Song editing is great on Reason. Now I use Bitwig and I am in love with it, but I could get shit done in Reason. If you just want to track a basic track without doing any real sound design then there are DAWS that are perfectly fine for that. I know for my uses Bitwig is really useful and I could do the same things in Reason. Some of the players are useful. Yeah I know Ableton is cool too. I also use the MPC software. However I am from the old school and grew up in the 70s and 80s and I still have some of those ideas. So I think Reason bashing is dumb
I just love ur channel bro lmao. Your personality is so relatable and hilarious lmao. I watch these videos every drop ! Can you make a video on the roland jupiter 8 & 6 & 106
@@DyReckProductions the warmth & sound. The new jupiters x that roland released recently sucks compared to the pure analog ones. Tha sound is definitely legendary. Im waiting for you on that video 😭✨✨✨🙇🏾♂️🙏🔥🚀🎵
Peaking over someones shoulder seeing the reason layout for the first time really bugged people out. I had a cracked version of Reason 2 for years but only dug it up after a health issue. Creating is such a good escape and Reason is a great versatile platform to learn a little about it all. Or you could just keep things real simple and stick to a routine. These days too, bounce a sample to rexfile and stepsequence some drums takes 30 seconds. These days, the way you can design presets using combinators AND use plugins makes it great for creating formulas that keeps the workflow going. Right now i mostly just use Grain and the sequencer to do everything. Kinda like an asr10 with autodetect pitch. Even works for tuning kicks. I want to get the new mimic sampler but they're kinda weak with their consumer capitalistic approach.
They not called Propellerheads they are called ReasonStudios and none of the original team exists in the company's. The longest member in Reason now is Ryan who's been with Reason about 8 years and used to be behind the camera but over the last few years took James Brunards place as the public relations leader.
Reason 1.0 was successful because it implemented ways of working that people already knew so it was very easy to get started. Dr. Rex was always my favorite device because the filters were so ratty sounding.
Reason version 10,11, and 12 have all been cracked. Propellerhead really gonna struggle cause damn, they finally got hit again. Rack Extensions from reason and third party also getting cracked and released on the daily too
Reason was the first DAW I ever used and with no experience with any audio gear and no youtube to learn from, the backside was too confusing for me. So later went on to mess with Fruity Loops. But it was not for a long time. Now I find Abelton confusing and like workflow of Reaper a lot more. As Im used to work on Adobe Premiere for videos, so it feels closer to home.
Excellent video bro 🙌🏾 like damm I’m glad I forgot about this software for everything you mentioned 🤣. Bro thanks for explaining Fans only ....... I could not understand what that app was about. I got a few invites on Facebook 😆😆
I got on at RSN 4. Prior to that I used physical hardware. And obviously the program mimicked that environment. Still a Reason user.... Its slacked a bit regarding technology and features the last few years, but I feel so comfortable with it, that I can't see abandoning it. Native Instruments us awesome, but asude from that, I can't wrap my head around ither DAWS for production (not recording).
i liked reason especially redrum with step drum sequencer - redrum was dope i use to wish they would release redrum as vst plugin to use with other daws, man it would have been my go to drum machine all the time in cubase
Right outta college my boy showed me fruity loops in 5 min...and I went n bought the basic version....this was 2003......was cool with it till another friend put me on reason.....and I beem killing on that that all the way up to Xmas 2012..... I was always curious about native instruments n maschine......I spent so much money on reason sound packs....when xmas came around and I saw they were offering no sales on their stuff....and NI offered crazy discounts....I jumped ship and never looked back...... I tried a yr ago but my work flow got crazy in maschine n studio one 4...what kept me on reason so long was the sequencer
I started out on reason in 2018 and I want to never use it again but I know too much about it. When I open the computer I want to open the fruit image but reason calls. I hate it
Reason was the perfect daw for the time. When it was closed to 3rd party plugins, it was so stable. You could just create and never worry about crashes. It was as immediate as hardware. Nothing quite like it. Of course times have changed. Reason never sounded the best to me. When a base MacBook Air can run a daw and all the plugins you want without breaking a sweat, it becomes hard to justify paying increasingly more to continue using a dated piece of software (that still lacks AU, VST3 and Apple silicon support). As a result, Reason Studios, like Netflix, seems to think punishing their loyal customers is the best way to increase revenue. Just hasn’t been the same, pro-musician company since that private equity firm got involved. And what company ever is? Makes me sad.
I feel you..They were really about there brand of customer experience back in the day..Im not sure about now..Maybe they should hire new young fresh people to give things a spark.
Yeah they were very stubborn with the third party support ..mainly because plugins crash your software sometimes... and having their own apps made their software stable....but the demand was far too strong to turn down. Great video ..very creative...you can easily talk about FL Studio aswell and how they offered lifetime updates mainly because they were hit the hardest with pirating .
Thank bro!..Yup I did a FL video and mentioned them getting hacked lol..Pirating was the wave back then..But software security really stepped there game up..If you try to hack them now..your computer might blow up Lol.
Yo dope video been watching almost all of them if you can do a Boss DR-5 and Roland S-10 sampling Keyboard a lot of people don't know but I use my DR-5 till this day with Reason 5
Early 2010s moving to DAWs Reason was solid as a rack inside your favorite DAW with ReWire. I even used to use Reason with my MPC 2500. The thing with Reason at the time, even tho you keep mentioning a sampler, you couldnt sample audio into reason. You had to find a sample and make a loop in another audio editing software like cool edit or sound forge. Then take that to ReCycle to slice it up. Then you saved REX files you could load into Dr.Rex. But whatever you sliced was permanent so if you wanted to edit a slice you had to close everything and open it back up in recycle. Then they changed drRex to octoREX and I hated that shit. But for that time period those sounds they had on NNXT, Thor, maelstrom etc were great. Then they added the ability to use multiple racks inside a single mixer channel to create new sounds, and they started selling sounds like reason keys, abbey road keys, drum packs, it was dope. Reason was not nice to beginners at all. I think Fruity Loops killed it’s popularity because FL was like the “beat making for dummies” for new beatmakers. You dl a cracked version of FL and start clicking buttons on the step sequencer and started pumping out shitty beats like Cassidy. But it was so easy to use people were willing to learn it.
Dang!..Beat making for dummies lol..Reason was confusing to alot of folks though..But if you stuck in there and figured it out you were good..Really good..I remember how popular Thor was back then lol.
I almost had a placement with Shorty Lo (rip) he liked it and it was made in Reason 5, and he asked me “did you use fruity Loops” and I said no, but he never used the beat, but I did make a few bucks.
Yo back in 2009 I was a wanna be beat maker using a demo version of FL studio it was straightforward and pretty easy to use but a friend had Reason on his computer I tried to make a beat but I was completely lost I didn’t even know what I was looking at I didn’t even know what a rack was or looked like
I really loved Reason back in the days until Ableton Live 5 came out and since then I never looked back. Easier (auto warp) and better sound stretching, clip-based arranging, VST support, audio recording, better arrangement and piano roll control, no hassle with instrument wiring, better UI, etc. Compared to Reason back then Ableton Live 5 was a revelation. Reason at that point was falling behind and since then it has never really recovered. To a point that nowadays, people rather prefer Reason to be used as a VST instrument in their own DAW because its DAW functionality has never caught up.
I bought Reason 4.0 back in high school for 475 in 2007 and It could not accept plug ins so I ran back to Fl studio 6, talk about I waste of money. I later combined Fl studio and sample tank 2 and it was magic back in the day.
I wonder wat reason can do now I did use in 2007 I still use recycle with my old akai s3000xl and s5000 , best samplers ever In 2022 I have no daw , got my own work flow no daw does wat I want it to , after starting wiv cubase vst way back I have to use 3 or 4 at the same time
I was a heavy Reason users in the early 2000's. Then I moved to Logic full-time and never looked back. I still own Reason to access older projects every now and then. The problem with Reason is that they were too slow to move. They didn't get audio in reason until version 6, years after the competition. They didn't add VST support until version 9.5 (if I remember correctly). Their sequencer is still stuck in the early 2000s with no improvement in site. They just added a resizable interface in version 12, before then if you have monitor newer than from early 2000's you had to deal with tiny buttons and texts for all their included instruments, with most of the instruments graphics looking dated. The whole wiring inputs thing is fun at first but if you want to do anything complex it becomes extremely tedious. They fell off because they didn't keep up with the changing landscape in the DAW the space. Ableton had the advantages of Reason's revolutionary at the time Combinators in Racks but made it much easier to use. FLStudio took the step sequencer and built in device approach and ran with it. Now Reason is trying to push a sub onto folks that people don't want.
"You had bloods, crips, and Reason users" 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

@@RoomAtTheTopStudio Yeah..It was the DAW wars back then Lol..Time flies..But Reason was always dope..It had its own style.
Reason is epic!! Rewire was such a HUGE game changer!
No doubt thats a good one.
I loved reason back in the day. Unlimited sounds
Reason is fucking dope yo but I only use MPC X and FL but yeah reason is dope
No doubt.
I feel you on the product having to spark creativity.
I loved Reason! Caned it making Jungle years ago. MPC user now! Respect. 👊
Oh ok no doubt.
What a great episode. Still have my original Reason.
Nice!
So much history with Reason didn’t know, thx 🙏🏾.
No doubt bro.
I love hearing your stories taking us through the vintage days of instruments we even get some of the fine history on how somethings got the way they were
Thanks fam..I appreciate it.
Reason introduced me to making music ITB. I will always have love for it for that.
I feel you.
you really kow your stuff & put that time into the research of these. Keep it up, love the vids!
Thanks fam!..I appreciate it.
Yay! Another episode. Hit like before even started to watch.
Lmao! Thanks fam.
HAHA! This was so much better than I expected. And on point, as a long-time reason user.
Lol. Thanks fam.
Funny, I just pulled my old iMac out of the closet, reinstalled Snow Leopard (from 2009) and installed Reason 5 this afternoon. And yes, I paid for it back in the day.
Lol..I got a copy of 5 also..Its on my old pc..Might check it out.
Man! I love your enthusiasm, the topics and your videos!
Thanks bro!
Keep it up.
Thanks bro..Nothing wrong with trying out a daw before you buy it lol.
Awesome content! You never disappoint. Now you know you gotta do Emagic Logic Audio and the switch from PC to MAC only. Can’t wait to hear your take on that.
Ahh man Mac only?..Ima see whats up.
@@hankstephens5543 Oh ok good point..They were going hard on the Rack Extensions.
@@hankstephens5543 No doubt..Ima see whats up.
I really like your work man🤘🏻
I respect you for doing these…
Thanks fam!..I appreciate it
Great video!
I feel you..Alot of folks were frustrated about the VST issue.
Lol Yeah same here about feeling old..Time flies.
Oh ok cool..Reason got alot of folks that love it.
I been using reason for 4 years still on reason intro 10 doe making dope music
programs like Reason and Bitwig excel in sound design.
Bitwig is interesting. There was alot of hype when it first came out. Folks were comparing it to Ableton Live.
I recently switched to bitwig from reason. But bitwig modulators with reason is money.
@@brownboy0004 Oh ok cool.
I just love ur channel bro lmao. Your personality is so relatable and hilarious lmao. I watch these videos every drop ! Can you make a video on the roland jupiter 8 & 6 & 106
Wow those are good ones.. The Jupiter 8 is legendary..What do you like most about it?
@@DyReckProductions the warmth & sound. The new jupiters x that roland released recently sucks compared to the pure analog ones. Tha sound is definitely legendary. Im waiting for you on that video 😭✨✨✨🙇🏾♂️🙏🔥🚀🎵
@@ApolloJetsonKND No doubt bro!
Yeah..I always liked Redrum..I never tried the Mimic sampler though.
They not called Propellerheads they are called ReasonStudios and none of the original team exists in the company's. The longest member in Reason now is Ryan who's been with Reason about 8 years and used to be behind the camera but over the last few years took James Brunards place as the public relations leader.
Oh ok.
Reason 1.0 was successful because it implemented ways of working that people already knew so it was very easy to get started. Dr. Rex was always my favorite device because the filters were so ratty sounding.
No doubt!
Reason version 10,11, and 12 have all been cracked.
Propellerhead really gonna struggle cause damn, they finally got hit again.
Rack Extensions from reason and third party also getting cracked and released on the daily too
Dang!
I use reason as a plug. It's great for that.
Lol I feel you.
I still have version 4. My favorite is the NNXT sampler.
No doubt.
Reason 4 was the best version. After that it all went to shit.
Excellent video bro 🙌🏾 like damm I’m glad I forgot about this software for everything you mentioned 🤣. Bro thanks for explaining Fans only ....... I could not understand what that app was about. I got a few invites on Facebook 😆😆
Lol..No doubt bro.
nice..
Thanks fam.
great video! reason 3 was my first full version daw
Thousands of Grime tracks was made on reason in the 00’s. Game changer back then 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yup.
Reason is my main since 2001 . Until this day, I preferred the perpetual license over the Reason+ subscription.
I feel you.
I feel you..I still use Acid pro for recording..Been messing a bit with Ableton lately though.
i liked reason especially redrum with step drum sequencer - redrum was dope i use to wish they would release redrum as vst plugin to use with other daws, man it would have been my go to drum machine all the time in cubase
It would have been nice as a vst.
I made SO MANY songs on Reason from like 2004 to 2018
No doubt!
Oh ok cool..They always had a good sequencer.
Omg 🤣🤣🤣😂😂 how! That’s exactly what me and my brother did when mom hid the Game 😂
Thanks Propellerhead for giving us Rewire.
No doubt.
I paid for version 8 in 2014. I still use it from time to time.
Oh ok no doubt.
@@DyReckProductions they still get hacked tho lol
I still love Reason...I hope I'll never have to switch to anything else
I've used Reason since 1.0. Still my main DAW today.
No Doubt.
It did/ does have a warmth too it, tho it’s digital, a major user of Reason, DJ Khalil
Yup.
Made some cool tracks with Rebirth after starting out using Midi Orchestrator Plus and Saw.
Oh ok nice.
Oooh can you do a video about the Yamaha RM1-X?
Should ve known that reason uses this hardware emulation before getting married to ableton :P Interesting workflow
Word.
Yo dope video been watching almost all of them if you can do a Boss DR-5 and Roland S-10 sampling Keyboard a lot of people don't know but I use my DR-5 till this day with Reason 5
No doubt. Gonna put that on the list.
@@DyReckProductions dope thanks bro is dat link still available with the mpc soounds???
@@hollywoodstudioguy3836 Yeah bro!..When ever you get the chance hit it up..I appreciate it!
Tantacrul has a really good video on how Propellerhead reinvented Reason. Do check it out.
Excellent. Do a series on 12 tones Cakewalk
No doubt bro.
First daw I actually got serious with! Second I had lol it was Reason 3 in 2006 for me!
Oh ok cool.
I almost had a placement with Shorty Lo (rip) he liked it and it was made in Reason 5, and he asked me “did you use fruity Loops” and I said no, but he never used the beat, but I did make a few bucks.
Nice!
my love for reason is unparalleled but im mosty on mpc and ableton and reason is pretty expensive.
Yeah the workflow of hardware is dope.
i chose reason because dj khalil and dj toomp was using it, and i still use reason today
Oh ok no doubt.
Yo back in 2009 I was a wanna be beat maker using a demo version of FL studio it was straightforward and pretty easy to use but a friend had Reason on his computer I tried to make a beat but I was completely lost I didn’t even know what I was looking at I didn’t even know what a rack was or looked like
Lmao same here!
Good point.
I haven't heard about reason in a while.
Yeah..Its been on the low for a lil minute.
I bought a Dummies guide to Reason before I actually bought. But then I seen Cubase in action and switched up lol
Oh ok cool.
I bought Reason 4.0 back in high school for 475 in 2007 and It could not accept plug ins so I ran back to Fl studio 6, talk about I waste of money. I later combined Fl studio and sample tank 2 and it was magic back in the day.
Oh ok nice.
I still love the hardware feature in reason
I feel you.
this video on display in our national museum in Sweden. now
Lol Dope!..When you get a chance I would love to see it lol!
I wonder wat reason can do now
I did use in 2007
I still use recycle with my old akai s3000xl and s5000 , best samplers ever
In 2022 I have no daw , got my own work flow no daw does wat I want it to , after starting wiv cubase vst way back
I have to use 3 or 4 at the same time
Oh ok dope!
Yeah they did have good features that other daws took and improved on.
Well said💯
Never really could get into Reason. I tried it back in 03 but I was always a FL Studio man
I feel you.
You got to reason!!!!
Lol.
Will it be a part 2? This story stopped at Reason 5.
