1979 Puch Magnum Project Part 14 - Timing & Test Ride

  • Checking the ignition timing (with Harbor Freight #3343) to make sure it wasn't way off - With the Stator in the middle of its adjustment the timing starts off around 14 degree's and with a little bit of throttle advances to 18 degree's. I dont know enough to change from that right now so I'm going to leave it alone as thats between the Kit value and stock value from the PDF I downloaded.
    Piston Stop -
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000...
    Starting fluid to check for leaks then a short clip of one of the break in rides. Re-checked head bolt torque and then a normal ride to check the jetting. Cylinder and Head temperatures were lower than I expected - Air temp. was about 50 degree's. Jetting will need adjusting, once I get that figured out I will post numbers.
    I'm 240lbs (as you can probably tell in the later parts of the video), bike has 16x40 gearing - max speed was 45mph, with a 30mph average over the 25 minute ride Stock 2 shoe clutch, I have blue springs and an MLM brace I will install - wanted to try stock first. No porting, rpm should be just over 8500rpm based on the Puch E50 RPM and speed chart
    www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Puch_E5...
    Timing Strip and wheel is downloadable from the Moped Army (In the video I click on the Points, even though I'm using CDI - thats just where the pdf is located) -
    www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Image:P...
    And even though I dont show it, this is the break in procedure I tried to follow -

    Looked like a nice smooth ride, for the most part. Beautiful scenery for a drive. I just got a 77 Puch Maxi, but it needs a little work before I can ride it. But I am excited.

    Awesome! Your riding route is beautiful also. I came across an x10 someone gave me and has been kept in a garage for +10 years. The tires are cracked and dry rotted, but other than than she is in mint condition.

    At higher rpm these engines will go way faster with that setup. My Puch MAxi with a fast Arrow 70cc Cylinder did 60Mph+ at 15k - 16k RPM. Ofocource you do need to replace bearings (and maybe cylinder and piston) every 6 to 10 months, but the sound and the agressiveness of that engine is just awesome!. Still have my puch (sinds '88, it was build in '84). Need to work on it someday again. Awesome vid, awesome sound. gave me childhood memories! :)

    Hey Man, I also live in MA and I was wondering what jet you are running in your mikuni? I am having some trouble with my kitted tomos a3, at high rpms it is sputtering. I know its the tuning but I am not sure if it is too rich or too lean. I have a 175 in there right now. Any ideas?

    • @n1bpd
      @n1bpd  10 років тому

      What town are you in? I'm still figuring out the jetting on this... thought I could just copy jetting from similar setups on the 1977 garage and get close but I have other issues that I need to address which is making it run lean.

    • @highcascade123
      @highcascade123 10 років тому

      I'm in southborough how about you? And oh alright. The jetting is kindve a pain in the ass so I was just going to bring it to lucky 2 strokes and have them tune it for me so I dont have to keep messing with it

    • @n1bpd
      @n1bpd  10 років тому

      kyle washburn I Live on Cape Cod, have you looked on the Garage? Here's an A3 and a VM20 - garage.1977mopeds.com/build/652

    • @highcascade123
      @highcascade123 10 років тому

      Oh cool. And no I've never hear of the garage, but that's a really nice looking ped. He has a 12.5 idle jet in there and I think I have a 25 or 22.5. It seems like the idle tuning can play a factor in the sputtering I'm having. If I change the air mixture screw and the idle screw, it'll either get better or worse. How's the puch been holding up otherwise?

    • @n1bpd
      @n1bpd  10 років тому

      The bike otherwise has been great, it actually runs really well - starts first kick, smooth idle and no bogging. But the plug chops show its lean. I'm running a 22.5 idle and a 210 main - everyone else is using much smaller main jets than me on similar setups so I assume I have other issues (air leak or something)

      Thanks, I got mine from craigslist for a couple hundred dollars. Buying the bike was the cheap part - the kit and the carb cost more.
      Craigslist, eBay, MopedArmy (dot com) - the latter has the best prices, eBay and Craigslist can be a bit inflated.

      +n1bpd 16x40 gearing what do you mean by that, like 16 tooth motor sprocket 40 tooth wheel. lol its a shame i ride dirt bikes and im not even sure on this

    • @n1bpd
      @n1bpd  8 років тому

      Yup, that's exactly what it means Cody. I could put a bigger sprocket on the motor to get a higher top speed, but it would reduce the acceleration..

      +Cody Davis You can make them strong and "slow". I have a MAXI-project at the moment in my garage that is going to be able to run up steep hills. If everything works out the way I want it to.
