- Will is back with another episode where he goes through the whole process of laying hips and ridges. He is full of tips and tricks to make the hip and ridge tile installation easier for all of you out there watching. Will shows you marking out hip tiles in order to get them nice and straight and the all important marking and cutting ridge tiles. He runs you through getting the right mortar mix and then laying tiles before finally pointing up hips and ridges.

Good job, but to keep a straight line all you have to do. Is place a ridge tile at the top and one at the bottom eye them up make a mark top and bottom then strike a line. Still every one to their own

I'm an ex roofer, leadman for the last 20 years, I know an old boy who cuts his to ridge on the deck never on the roof and every time it's bang on, asked him a few times how he does it he just winks at me and smiles. Shame he's retiring soon best roofer I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Top job by the way 👏 👌
I do small ridge and hip repairs in my property maintenance work and the reason I feel more confident is watching Will’s videos.

Good call mate, I’m a plumber in Australia and theirs a real class system when it comes to trades. Roof tilers are known to be pretty rough when it comes to quality and skill. This fella is a absolute pro and great example of a master tradesmen. A&E are a class above. 👍

I have been a slater,,,roofer ,,,,for 45 years and ran 100s if not 1000s of hips up and it’s great to see someone who can put a roof on without those dry ridge systems ,most people who call thereselfs roofer these days would be baffled doing it the proper way,,great job guys

Nice neat job guys. We always use a t&g board as a guide. Just sit your side of the ridge on the tonge and then remove the board when you have bedded the last 1 then point up.

Hi Lads, it was a joy to watch professional, conscientious craftsmen at work, I work in construction doing groundworks, driving the diggers doing foundations and drainage, I like to take a bit of pride in my work same as you, so regarding other trades I have the basic idea but still need and appreciate the tradesman's knowledge. You guys are definitely masters of your trade, you watch some videos on UA-cam and realise some people are just slap, dash and scarper! Well done, Top marks!! Pete.

The simple fact that you re-cut the ridge tile so your margins are correct at the meeting point tells me one specific thing your an excellent tradesman and even though nobody will see but you means you care bout your work and your customers project this is a great video and your setting a great example for the younger tradesmen out there and more importantly young Ricky who's with you, it was a joy to watch this, I'm a roofer myself and I like attention to detail people god knows we have plenty of cowboys going around the place ... glad I found your channel sub now too, all the best you ll never be out of work and take care..

I'm a landscaper and currently building my own workshop, not being a roofer it was this job thats going to be the hardest part for me but finding and watching this video helped me massively understand the proper way hips are tackled, its a real credit to you and your skill set!Thanks again!

Just about to do our hipped dormer, ran out of summer and the local guys can’t do it until November so I’m tackling it myself - thank you so much for these videos, you’ve made this really straightforward!
I used a length of tongue and groove one side,place the ridges along the tongue side,bed of mortar nice and high just inside the timber,then bed them on,point up when set after few hrs after removing wood job done,straight and level
I do it the same way but with a length of skirting board
Definitely the way to do it using a hip board a length of tongue and groove is how I was taught nice and straight and level

I’ve not seen it done like that before with a scaffolding board secured to the scaffolding. Always interesting to see how others do it. I use a ridge runner which is adjustable to accommodate any type of ridge and supports your muck on both sides of the hip. It also is self supporting and just sits on the hip without any need to brace it. We tend to use remix if doing muck work as it knocks up a lovely drop of gear and it’s consistent every time without need for febmix. Having said all this, we rarely even do muck work on roofs these days unless they are repairs or on very old buildings. It’s usually dry ridge system, which is designed for ventilation and the mechanical fixings provide a much more permanent solution and never a need to worry about cracking muck work. And apart from anything else it’s ten times as quick. Still have to point tour starter and your mitres but it’s lot easier screwing a ridge down than it is to bed it on muck. One thing I will say though is the dry ridge system is not great on deep profile tiles like mendips or pantiles but work a treat with plain tiles slates and stonewolds. I’m guessing you do all your perimeters in muck work. Again, valleys and gables in dry systems are super quick and look pretty too. I wonder if u use segmental ridge all over or do u use 1/3 round on the hips to avoid that top ridge swinging up where it meets the mitre? I like the fact that u keep your tile cuts central to the hip and so avoid muck spilling into the roof void. The amateur wouldn’t appreciate that would cause water ingress. They think that so long as it’s under the ridge tile that it doesn’t matter but I’ve seen the hip rafter start to rot out due to muck having spilt into the central void. I’ve often wondered what that fake muck is like. That stuff you buy in premixed bags. Really weird gruff. It looks like plasticine and is supposed to be completely waterproof and permanent. I’d love to try it but it’s well expensive.
Well u bedded a nice tidy hip. I didn’t see the mitre but I’m guessing u got that looking good too. I’ll come and do some work with u if u fancy it and exchange ideas and techniques. I have no labourers at present so I’m finding it hard working alone. Roofing is. Or a one man job, eh?

I do a lot of work for roofers in particular rives as I am good a t leveling and sand and cement but it amazes me how many tell me I'm being to picky great to see I'm right ther rong lol

AN old school tip for you is to use a T&G floor board instead of the Scaf Plank and lay the hip on the tongue that way it will keep your hip straight and also set the height of one side of the hip

That piece of "scrap" tile really is a brilliant idea before adding more mortar. It not on add as a support but provide more reinforcement as well.

Wonder if it would be possible for you to do a video on replacing individual broken roof tiles, which ones you consider necessary to replace and which ones you could leave. Also in various positions on the roof. Great video as always.

Excellent quality fellas, you make it look very easy but having done a few of these myself I know its extremely hard and skilled work if you are going to get a straight line in both planes. On a hot day though I dont think I could get a whole run mucked out in one go, it just goes off too quick, but I guess with all hands to the mill anything is possible

Please come to Newcastle we are desperate for roofers that know what they are doing. There are plenty of bodgers here who put a bit of cement down the edge of the tile without bedding the ridge tile down first. However, they are good at saying can you pay cash. The tiles are solid, even though you can see them wobbling about. They swing about the roof like monkeys on a roof ladder without using scaffolding on hipped roofs. Whatever happened to good tradesmen, they are being replaced by spotty teenagers with little or no experience.
