This gets fascinating from 12:00 with the mention of David Ruffin, damn, the male host really, really had some real interviewing talent with that straight forward approach. Great interview, Mary popping off on Otis. You can see why that company was one of a kind.

Mary had a lot to say,, the hosts appear to have known this in advance to let her speak straight while Otis would not stray too far from the company line. I'm guessing this was mid-late 80's. Mary down to earth as hell. You can see the happiness in her face at 6:56. She was a great one, always will be.

Isn't this one of the most fascinating, insightful and telling Motown interviews ever? Mary Wells is so down to earth, Otis (in a different way) is equally down to earth. What's funnier (to me) is how those two were competing on this interview, though Otis and Tempts were her original Motortown male background singers.

@@TheRetNetwork I think it was Mary Wells still within her aura of early Motown greatness feeling she was in charge, as Tempts (Otis) worked under her in early 60's before things went 180 degrees at Motown. Mary is/was a rare mixture (as was Blondie Ballard) of an outspoken, petty, bitter, yet humble and highly honest person. Mary's story is equally as tragic as is Blondie Ballards. Otis deserves all he has accomplished as a Tempt.

Great, candid and insightful interview (though it repeats at 19:44). Though Mary Wells represents early Motown and had long moved on by this time and Otis represents Motown (even to this day, long after Mary's passing), it was a great pairing and Otis gave well thought out answers with just the right wording to lessen the controversy in loaded questions that was aimed in his direction. I was surprised they did not speak about the early days when The Temptations replaced The Love Tones on the road as Mary's back-up singers, but, then again, the interview seemed to have already been in progress when this video started. Either way, I cannot thank you enough for posting this!

The lady at 12:00 hit a nerve with Mary, look at the expression on her lovely face.

Mary was looking at touring the South totally different from Otis who was trying to tell the actual truth but Mary was looking at the fun part not wanting to discuss the situations Otis was referring to. Otis face was…good grief let her tell it her way.
