I was 33 and it was the second time that I was blown away by the visuals that a movie could present. The first time was seeing Star Wars when it first came out.
I saw it at the theatre when it first came out. I didn't know anything about it beforehand and I don't even think I had seen a trailer. It *blew me away*. Probably one of the most memorable cinematic experiences I have ever had. Only thing that comes close is Kill Bill and the original Terminator.
Hugo Weaving's performance rarely gets talked about but I thoroughly enjoyed the Smith character. To me two of the greatest villains are Alan Rickman as "Hans Gruber" in Die Hard and Hugo Weaving as "Smith" in the Matrix movies.
I love that he literally wants the same thing the heroes want, he doesn't want to be there and he's fighting to escape it the same way Neo did. He doesn't even want to hurt them, his contempt, his disgust is just so much that he just wants to get away from them. You can empathize with his misanthropy, he's not human and he wants nothing to do with us.

Yeah, it's just a shame that this scene and most of the action in the movie is a direct rip off of Ghost in the shell ( the first movie) even the filmmakers admit that they took a lot from the anime.

In any case, the Wachowski brothers are great fans of Japanese anime and Hong Kong kung fu. Just like many other great directors. Quentin Tarantino is good example. What they did is take several elements from many different sources of inspiration (not just Ghost in the Shell) and combined them into something new and original. You see, all ideas build upon others. That is the essence of creativity. I am sure much of the great cinematic action we see today are in turn inspired by The Matrix. And so the cycle continues.
Your hard on is showing. This scene is pretty dated now and it’s far from the “best action sequence ever directed.” Heat, Hard Boiled, The Raid, The Town, Sicario and Saving Private Ryan all had better shootouts and directing.

The directors were inspired by Ghost in the shell, they didnt rip it off there is a difference between being inspired and paying tribute to something vs just straight copying. Some people are just less aware of where certain art inspirations are from.
Now that they re-released it on theaters, I took my 11-year-old brother to see it with me in order to make sure he experienced it in a way I never did (I was only9 when it came out and only watched it on VHS years later). He loved, though I think I loved it even more despite the fact that I'd already seen it, lol.
I'm _so_ glad to read this from you. I was 16 years old when this first came out in '99, and this was SERIOUSLY *THE BEST* thing I had seen in my _life_ at that point. A few nights ago the husband and I let our 9 year old watch this and OMG. She was crying and SO _FREAKED OUT_ during Neo's interrogation scene where the agents _erase his mouth_ and insert that freaky looking tracking device in his navel. Poor kid was literally SCREAMING and we had to stop the movie. (Bizarrely, she immediately begged us to turn it back on and let her continue watching). I was SO worried we had made a mistake in letting her watch (what I later realized was an 'R' rated movie), but seeing how you were only _7_ years old, and the commenter above me took his 11 year old brother to see it, I guess it isn't too out of the ordinary for a kid to watch.
Neo’s outfit in this scene is dope af. Edit: his entrance is also dope af: the way his boots hit the ground. Also the way Trinity destroys the guy asking for backup is awesome.
To be fair, Matrix 4 was never really about the action. They just included it 'cause Warner Bros would probably freak if they didn't see any of that. It was ultimately a movie about why the movie shouldn't have needed to be made in the first place.

I was very disappointed with the fight scenes, the movie relied on neo force shielding and doing little else. They were also zoomed in instead of framing movements in an appealing way. People mock the two sequels at least the fights were good even if the writing started to fall off.
This scene and the following rooftop scene are probably the two most badass, iconic scenes in action movie history. Perfect blend of practical effects and CGI, and not so over the top that it breaks immersion. Later films, and plenty of modern films and their over-use of obvious CGI just gets too absurd to allow for suspension of disbelief. The Matrix masterfully straddled that line, and remains a superb movie even today.
I agree, also taking the time to build up suspense. Nowadays every scene seems to be in a hurry, not giving the time to let things settle in/build up tension.

The entire, seamless sequence from the lobby to the rooftop to the helicopter, culminating in Neo's incredible saving of Trinity and the realization that he is indeed the One is just absolutely breathtaking cinema. The helicopter crash with the windows rippling is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a movie.
This movie is seriously a Hollywood masterpiece. This will never happen again, it was so iconic, and i'm so glad I was alive to witness it for the first time.
Unfortunately I think you're right: I'll never be able to understand how amazing it must've been to walk into the Cinema and then see this scene for the first time. Its way too late for me to even try and comprehend how amazing it felt. I'll just have to settle for re-watching this film again because of how great it is: but I won't ever be able to realise what it was really like when it was released. :(
This is what modern action movie directors don't understand and can't reproduce: economy. In all this MCU crap nowadays, the action scenes just go on and on until they are starting to drag. About 50% to 70% of the way through the audience suddenly realizes "hey, this fight has been going on for a REALLY long time" and just like that they're yanked out of the movie and feeling the need to check their watch.
I'll never forget the first time that I saw this movie as a 10 year old kid. At the time, I didn't understand most of it, I just knew it was the absolute coolest thing I'd ever seen in my life and to this day, this scene is still one of my top 3 all time favourite movie scenes. The movie in general is an absolute masterpiece!

These films are the ESOTERIC Masonic (not Lodge) underground disclosure to back back, what the evil jerks took underground. This is depicting the Left brain (Neo / Jachin pillar) having been through therapy & training (w Morpheus) finally learning to listen to the RIGGHT side of the Brian (Trinity / Boaz) - the INTERNALS - the Commpass & NOW - as the TWO united pillars coming back to the world working in unison! Neo is to learn to navigate by the Heart & his Over Soul ("one eye") & thus hear Universal Law enabling him to leave the lower dimensions (Machine City / Matrix / Cube). He came down into the lower Matrix/s to learn the Universe, but has to get his butt back home as well. This is great film because it's recording in us - symbolically triggering us to remember the path home. These are giving us the alagory of the Widow's Son; the Left brain marrying the Right, but the Left must surrender and follow, or "die" to bring the birth of the Son. Hence our resurrection. Esoteric Masonry comes out of the Egyptian Mystery Schools, and the key thing the temple priests knew was HOW the mind works. The Left side of the brain has the executive functions (tending to the body, energy reserves, it wants consistency & strictly takes life at face value. The Right side of the brain holds the Inner Compass & laws of the entire Universe, but you have to train to hear it. The Cabals & rulers keep us sick, tired, burnt out & using the Left side of the brain to survive 24/7. This locks us into Left brain & it's blue pill sleep. The right side will reintroduce us to our Over Soul if we "follow her - the white rabbit"... IF we do we Morpheus is going to be there & ask us to side with him, so he can walk us through this matrix gauntlet - thus the red ill is the surrender to the Compass & Morpheus and nothing & no one else. THEN we are dodging bullets (mind controls that would have normally gotten us). In this scene BOTH pillars of the brain 7 & 7 are fighting propaganda, degradation, injuries to our value etc --- THE shoot out --- and getting back so that we don't pull even out Over Soul down. THIS IS LIKE THE BEST SCENE EVER!!!! ***ITS CODE to trigger us back up***
Almost entirely done with practical effects instead of CGI. It's why this scene holds up so well even in 2018 when Matrix: Reloaded scenes became dated after only a couple of years. Truly this was a golden age of Cinema.
To me, the first one is a masterpiece in cinema, Reloaded was pretty good overall, not as good as the first, but still pretty solid IMO and Revolutions was a disappointment honestly, thinking it could have used the 4 year gap like between Matrix 1 and Reloaded. Still, a pretty good trilogy overall.
This interrogation and shootout is probably the most iconic scene (scenes) in movie history. The transition from interrogation to the lobby is perfect. Amazing work nearly a quarter century on.
John Wick is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer will. His aim is precise and deadly, he barely ever misses a shot. Neo is just like “fuck it, I have 17 other guns. SPRAY AND PRAY!!!”

Trinity kicking that Spas over the dudes shoulder to the blast in the back, is one of the coolest things ever. Then her shooting the other guy without showing him get shot, is just so badass. 10/10
It's funny that pop culture often conflates this scene with "bullet time", when that was reserved solely for the agents until Neo does a tiny bit of it at the very end. What Neo and Trinity were seeming to do here was not "dodging bullets", which still move faster than they can react, but rather using their superhuman but not physics-defying agility to move erratically with all those fancy acrobatics so that the soldiers couldn't aim at them properly.
I remember watching the bonus features in this DVD--the creators considered "bullet time" to be any of the scenes that involved the use of multiple cameras set up in a "track" fired off in rapid succession to allow for the feeling of the *camera* moving in bullet time, not necessarily the cast/characters. That being said, I don't think this is an example of that either, just "normal" slow motion filming. My main point, though, is that bullet time is a cinematic technique, not a thing that a character did.
Ive never seen parodies of thos scene in bullet time. They only mimic the freeze frame shot of trinity doing that kick, which I don't find iconic so help me understand why it is

Simple Play I can’t imagine seeing this live, I saw Spider-Man 1 in theaters around the same time as this, was like 7 so it probably would’ve been too intense, but theaters must’ve just been losing their minds on this movie I bet.
Horrible is very good for matrix 4 the parodies! It was like they made it in 5 Hours! It looked like some low budget uninspired random movie! Keanu and Moss weren't enough to save this trash! Not that they tried. But their faces kept me watching and don't leave by boredom
Wanna know what I really like about this? The fact that none of the SWAT/Soldiers are doing the "Jaw drop, deer in headlights" crap while these two are pulling all these reality-defying stunts. Even if they're getting their asses handed to them, they're still professional enough not to be distracted.

When The Matrix came out nobody could stop talking about it for weeks in my school. For months and years, there's always that Matrix reference everywhere. It was something we didn't see before! It was ahead of its time.

Fun fact: Keanu filmed this entire scene while wearing a back brace. He hurt his back while previously filming the final fight with Agent Smith and just kind of powered through it. His reputation as a dedicated and hardworking actor is well-earned.
Seeing this in theaters as a 14 year old, it is difficult to express how mind blowing this entire movie experience was. It left you feeling electricity in your body and mind for days, years, a permanently mind altering shock to the system. Going back, it gets better, and better every time you see it. This is cinema, art, music, story, all perfectly combining into the greatest scene in movie history. There is nothing like it, or this movie, it is that good. My favorite movie of all time.
Just watched this today in a theatre where I live - it’s playing all weekend and is being shown in one of the special Dolby theaters. Absolutely amazing. It still holds up as a spectacular action movie even 20 years later.
John Wick had some good shootout scenes (in an otherwise second grade film), but they were nowhere near this one in terms of style and aesthetics. Kingsman was just garbage; a lousy British copy of over-the-top American action films. The brits should stick to Bond. The Matrix is an icon in cinema history and it will continue to be so many years after John Wick and Kingsman are forgotten.

It's mind blowing to me that Matrix still seems like a cutting edge modern movie to me, but people have been born, gone to school, gone to college, become adults, gotten jobs, bought cars, moved out, gotten laid, and had kids of their own since it was made.

This is what modern action movie directors don't understand and can't reproduce: economy. In all this MCU crap nowadays, the action scenes just go on and on until they are starting to drag. About 50% to 70% of the way through the audience suddenly realizes "hey, this fight has been going on for a REALLY long time" and just like that they're yanked out of the movie and feeling the need to check their watch.

I'll never forget the first time that I saw this movie as a 10 year old kid. At the time, I didn't understand most of it, I just knew it was the absolute coolest thing I'd ever seen in my life and to this day, this scene is still one of my top 3 all time favourite movie scenes. Almost entirely done with practical effects instead of CGI. It's why this scene holds up so well even in 2018 when Matrix: Reloaded scenes became dated after only a couple of years.

To me, the first one is a masterpiece in cinema, Reloaded was pretty good overall, not as good as the first, but still pretty solid IMO and Revolutions was a disappointment honestly, thinking it could have used the 4 year gap like between Matrix 1 and Reloaded. Still, a pretty good trilogy overall.
Then again, in the bullet dodge scene, only Neo isn't cgi. The background is entirely greenscreen in that shot.

Trinity kicking that Spas over the dudes shoulder to the blast in the back, is one of the coolest things ever. Then her shooting the other guy without showing him get shot, is just so badass. 10/10
It's funny that pop culture often conflates this scene with "bullet time", when that was reserved solely for the agents until Neo does a tiny bit of it at the very end. What Neo and Trinity were seeming to do here was not "dodging bullets", which still move faster than they can react, but rather using their superhuman but not physics-defying agility to move erratically with all those fancy acrobatics so that the soldiers couldn't aim at them properly.
I remember watching the bonus features in this DVD--the creators considered "bullet time" to be any of the scenes that involved the use of multiple cameras set up in a "track" fired off in rapid succession to allow for the feeling of the *camera* moving in bullet time, not necessarily the cast/characters. That being said, I don't think this is an example of that either, just "normal" slow motion filming. My main point, though, is that bullet time is a cinematic technique, not a thing that a character did.

Fun fact: Keanu filmed this entire scene while wearing a back brace. He hurt his back while previously filming the final fight with Agent Smith and just kind of powered through it. His reputation as a dedicated and hardworking actor is well-earned.
Seeing this in theaters as a 14 year old, it is difficult to express how mind blowing this entire movie experience was. It left you feeling electricity in your body and mind for days, years, a permanently mind altering shock to the system. Going back, it gets better, and better every time you see it. This is cinema, art, music, story, all perfectly combining into the greatest scene in movie history. There is nothing like it, or this movie, it is that good. My favorite movie of all time.

I'd say the bank heist shootout in Heat is the best ever, but this is a good 2nd.
John Wick had some good shootout scenes (in an otherwise second grade film), but they were nowhere near this one in terms of style and aesthetics. Kingsman was just garbage; a lousy British copy of over-the-top American action films. The brits should stick to Bond.
The Matrix is an icon in cinema history and it will continue to be so many years after John Wick and Kingsman are forgotten.
The shootout scenes in Scarface, Hard Boiled, John Wick, Django Unchained, Collateral, and even Terminator 2 are just as good in my opinion.
