    When I first started making StatQuest videos it never dawned on me that people would try to re-do my math on their own. I was also new to explaining things and just assumed that everyone already knew that, in statistics and machine learning, when you use the log, you use base 'e'. Big rookie mistake! Ever since then, people have been re-doing my math using log base 10 and posting comments about how their math is not working out. Well, this video attempts to explain the discrepancy.
    Music and Producer: Sven Pontus Simonsson
    Ukulele and Vocals: Josh Starmer
    Mastered by Richard Lindvall @ AboutSound

      Note that you write "posting comments about how the math is working out", but I think you meant "posting comments about how the math is NOT working out".

    Hey, Josh. Love your videos!
    Do you have any plan on making videos about more advanced statistics used in clinical trials? Like meta-analyses and network meta-analyses, time series, hazard ratios, and so on? I don't know if any of this is part of your daily work, but learning these topics from you would be great!

      That's something I'd love to cover. The bad news is that it might not be until 2025 before I get to it...But it's something that I want to learn about and trying to get more involved in.

    I loved that part at the end about people using other bases. This prompted me to ask for an explanation as to what's so special about e in ML and stats. Like, how/why did everyone just decide on e? Does it have some special property not shared by any other constant?

    • @statquest
      @statquest  Місяць тому +5

      I actually had lyrics for "why 'e'?" in one version of this song that got cut. The reason, I believe, is that it's super easy to work with when deriving equations. The derivative of log_e(x) = 1/x, which is nice and it's also related to e^x, and the derivative of e^x = e^x, which is also super nice. Those properties make the algebra of messing with equations much easier than other bases.

    • @drmelodypond
      @drmelodypond Місяць тому

      Could it be that 'log' is used in cases where you can choose which base to use? So 'ln' would be used only if it has to be base e?

    Are we not supposed to use base 2 when computing entropy and other information related metrics ?

    • @statquest
      @statquest  Місяць тому +1

      When computing entropy for two options, it's traditional, but not required, to use base 2. However, I'll be honest, 99.9% of the times I use the log() in statistics and machine learning, I use log base e.
