- The clean guitar tones on Nirvana's In Utero are some of the best guitar tones I've ever heard. Those tones are the whole reason I picked up a guitar. The distorted tones of In Utero are great too, but it's the cleans that do it for me. This video is about that, hope ya dig it!
Genuinely good to hear from non-guitar people to make sure we're not crazy.
What's a nonguitar person?

brother literally, took the words from my mouth

please no i need my squier with a broken headstock :(
ur literally guitar equipment
bro ur literally the worst fender amp
I share your desire to do that, but if someone has done it, we wouldn't have gotten this amazing videos.

As a life long Nirvana fan and Kurt as my inspiration to pick up a guitar as a kid, I could never figure out what was my favorite song of theirs, depending on the mood. But there may be one..."Sappy." The tone of that clean guitar, the simplicity and pounding of the drums and the ever moving bassline under Kurt's beautiful vocal melody like a current in the sea. Perhaps as a song writer, the fact that Kurt was never really satisfied with it and recorded it multiple times, I can empathize.
Then you play Sappy... love it lol
Just wanna say thank you for everything you’re doing, making pedals and now an aluminum guitar for us to purchase! Your videos inspired me to build a mustang to get some nirvana tones and all I can say is thanks for the help and keep doing an amazing job!!!
Also, you better release all those little songs from the intros because they’re great!
Thanks Leonardo!! That makes me so happy to hear and that's the whole reason I really love making these videos
Glad I’m not the only one that built a mustang thanks to this guy. Did you get a vintage body?
@@williamcoolhat5438 well I got inspired by his video building the squier mustang, I changed some parts and all the electronics to Kurt specs and it came out really nice! I hope Fender will reissue the Cobain mustangs for the 30th anniversary of In Utero…
Yk I've been wondering where I can buy this stuff or in the case of thr pedals at least get the parts list and schematics
@@LeonardoTineo_ Thats dope! I did that but with a 70's mustang body and a squire jaguar neck lol I was on a budget for sure. I hope so too it'd be the smart thing to do for sure!
Holy shit dude, got a straight chill down my spine when i heard that first chord of rape me kick in, following with the lead guitar in the outro to rape me and the pluck of the low e string in heart shaped box. It's amazing to hear this tone in all its glory which had absolutely left me in awe of that rawness from the first time I sat down and listened to In Utero. Mrs. Rash pretty much said it all when she said that it's 'so much more vibrant' and that it sounds 'alive', It really does, it almost springs into life when plugged in and basically transforms from bare aluminium to a full on grunge machine with the most punchiest tone ever. I've never heard anyone have such an original and inspiring tone and I find It so stupid when people say how it's "the easiest tone to get" yada yada when In reality its so far from the truth and this definitely has been the hardest tone to recreate. Who knew Kurt would end up using a rare aluminium guitar produced in the 70s in limited quantities (that wasn't even his) throughout the entire album? I certainly didn't and 99% of people probably wouldn't. At first I thought it was the Jaguar, then the mustang, then the high flier and finally this. It's honestly been such a journey but it has been totally worth it man, your videos are a blessing to us curious little group of fans trying to uncover this fascinating tone. Also extremely excited about the plans of launching a guitar, thats fucking amazing! Absolutely Loved today's upload, Peace out.
This is terrible. NirvanaGuitars is better
@@ultimatenirvanatribute lmao
Duane Denison from the Jesus Lizard and Buzz Osborne from the Melvins have been playing aluminum guitars for a long time, and the guys in Nirvana were obviously fans of what those guys were doing, so maybe there’s some sort of a connection there. I’ve also heard that the aluminum guitar that Kurt played on In Utero was Steve Albini’s; he (allegedly) brought it to the session at Pachyderm for Kurt to try out.
Holy shit at this point you could do a whole guitar cover of the album and it'll sound identical! Also stop apologizing for the "long" wait for videos, your a dude with a life and responsibilities we understand. Plus we already worship you cuz your doing some of the best work for the Nirvana community so no need to swet it !
Not only are your videos very well shot and edited, they're the only ones where the tone is truly IDENTICAL. Like I've watched some from other people where I'm like okay that sound pretty damn similar, but you get them so perfectly that I think you could actually fool me into thinking it's the real thing sometimes. Well done man!
When I was a kid, I was obsessed about recreating Kurt's guitar sound. I especially wondered how I could get that sharp metallic clean sound, like in the intro of Sappy, but I couldn't ever figure out. I tried putting a JB pickup in the bridge and playing through Twin Reverb, as I learned those were the gears Kurt used in the In Utero recording, but it didn't sound anything like the sound from the record.
I wish I had UA-cam and a channel like this back then because that would have saved me lots of time and money that I had spent researching Kurt's guitar tone. Really appreciate the time and efforts you put in making these videos, and keep up the good work!
I'm so happy with all the progress you're making, congratulations dude, you nailed it again
I cannot express how I fu#king love this channel. You completely nailed the tone. So happy for you dude!!! 🤘
Gave me chills how you nailed the tones....
I started watching your videos because I love nirvana and that whole time in my life and instantly got hooked on you and your channel, your a really likeable guy full of awesome info and your enthusiasm is contagious. What you have done for us who have tried to play nirvana songs so they sound as close as possible to the album is amazing and the time we live in also helps obviously back in the mid 90s I didn’t have access to this information. I am not going to speak for others but I and assume we appreciate the time effort work and sheer amount of money this project must take and all I really wanted to say is a huge huge thank you for everything you have done and are doing you can’t know how much your appreciated and long may it continue and don’t worry how long it takes you deserve and need to have your life outside this channel but we will patiently wait for you thank you take care.
I recorded with Steve Albini about 10 years ago at Electrical Audio. Of course, we overwhelmed him with Nirvana questions. I remember him telling us that Kurt played his aluminum guitars. Steve is now using Travis Beans.
Anywhere I can hear the album? Have plans to record with Steve myself once I've got a batch of songs written! would love to hear your/his work :D
@@Jose-oq6kj Yes. The bands name is Asleep and the album title is “Unpleasant Companion”. I believe we uploaded to Apple Music 10 years ago.
Not our finest songwriting work but sounds good.
I think Steve works best for a certain kind of band. My former band needed a producer which Steve is not. So our songwriting and such could have used an additional opinion to sort things out a bit more.
As for sounds, I never had a better drum sound ever. I really liked how aggressive and full the drums sound.
@@cvzxxzcv Yea I feel you, Steve tries not to get in the way from what I know, definitely an engineer and not a producer. Thanks for the quick reply, I'll check the album now!
I do love his drum sound! Very raw!
You are literally living many musicians dream!
Keep it up 💪🏼
Hell yeah man you have re ignited my passions for these tones this has been top notch content. Your film skills are on par as well.
Aaron, this is so exciting. You’re nailing these tones. I am very hyped for the veleno
This is actually insane man, you are awesome!!
Dude the way you approach this stuff is great. It's the reason I sub. I can feel your passion for getting this stuff right.
Dude you're the only channel i have the bell notification on for. I really love your videos & your content is god tier.
Nice!🔥 I love the clean tones from Kurt the most! Sounds awesome!
I've seen three of your videos now, and the work you do to craft a tone is exactly what I love about music. The visual aesthetic of your videos is the cherry on top. I'm subscribed now.
I can't wait to see what you do in the future. 🤘
Spot on. Thanks for all your hard work / obsessiveness.
Dude, you're making a freaking rocket science out of "simple" Tone replication, and the best part is, I absolutely love it! Great job!
Another amazing video from the goat himself. So excited for this website bro
You acived soo much over the last 2 years. Respect
Amazing! I don’t have the words!!! Love IN UTERO tones!!!

I just learned about Nirvana recently and man, I'm addicted to Heart Shaped Box. That opening has that welcoming feeling.

This channel is just awesome!! For real Nirvana fans that play guitar it’s so interesting. Well done you! 🙏🤘🏻
AARON YOUVE GIVEN US THREE VIDEOS WITHIN A MONTH, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 😭😭
Congrats bro your channel growed a lot❤
this has become my fav YT channel!
Hello Aaron. Many people here would like to buy Impulse response from all the amps (tones) you have created (reached)
Have you consider make IR captures?
I'd like to buy all !
Good idea. Don't think he'll miss that opportunity.
Dude, just thank you.
that sounds fantastic
Thanks Aaron this is really fun to follow!
theres nothing that i love more than waking up to a video from aaron
The aluminum one sounds like my Washburn N4’s Bill Lawrence L500XL, but cleaner. Great work once again Aaron. You nailed it.
I just wanted to know this the other day. Thanks for the video and information.
Man!!!, you really nail it, I thought that I knew everything about Nirvana, and I never knew that he was using a guitar like that, and I thought too that he was using his favorite guitars for the recording of the album, but not quite, and in the clean parts the Veleno?, really??? I would have never found that for myself!!!!
Excellent job of researching, excellent Job👏👏👏👏😎✌️
DUDE THAT IS INSANE! I've always wanted to nail HSB and Rape Me as well but also Sappy. That clean tone SMACKS!
Your content has been blowing my mind, you make me want to cry ...I have been chasing these sounds FOREVER. Love this! would you be selling any of these modded amps, speakers, or other things you have uncovered on this journey?
That sounds amazing
I’ve been playing bedroom-NIRVANA since they were still on MTV and thought I was probably the best at it. After watching this video, I think I’m retiring the idea. You nailed it.
genius of dedication
Awsome video every time🎸🎸🎸
Love the tone
I'm more of a metal and classic rock kind of person, but your videos really peak my interest. I'm going to have to pull up some Nirvana and have a listen. Maybe that will be going down a rabbit hole, which I'm totally open to.
jesus that quad reverb sounds amazing
I love these videos
So much bass in those Fender amps but it always sounds great. I have my sub speaker tuned down and I still felt that intro.
You nailed it!
Sweet video man!!!
Dude I'm glad you're digging my old Guild pickup! 🤘🏻😁
can't wait for your veleno remake!!🎉
Oh man, these videos never disappoint me. I am so excited to see the veleno and even more for the website, where we will be able to buy an aluminum guitar, in which thanks to you I fell i love with, and the engine pedal, which I am looking forward since the release of your video about it. I think, that loans are coming for me, so I am able to purchase all of those thinks. Still there is one thing that I'm little bit afraid of. Will you be able to ship to Europe? Thanks for the videos and hopefully for an answer.
Thank you Aaron your work is very good ! what is your setup for record , mics pream daw etc... it would be interesting to do a video explain all that :-) i love the sound of your record !!
dude you nailed it
Your videos are great.
I love the all apologies guitar and I am excited to see the new veleno! The alu neck is freaking cool.
Saw Nirvana in Utero show live and never knew this about the albums sound!
Love you man!!
spot on dawg, dope shit
happen to agree! It was tough finding a fender in the 90's that had humbuckers
I went crazy for 20 years to reproduce the Rape Me clean intro tone! And now we discover that he achieved that sublime sound with a Veleno. The various websites always wrote that Kurt used the Jaguar and the twin reverb... Thanks Aaron
Beautiful fender!
spot on man.
Is the aluminum more or less temperature sensitive than the steel string or a wood guitar? Nice stuff Aaron you're an inspiration.
Gimme that engine pedal baby!!!
Very very rarely do I ever hear people absolutely nailing sounds. Mainly because speaker-mic combinations and placements are a bitch to get exact. Congrats man! Also your wife is a beauty!
Long time ago an American Standard guitar suddenly met an Amerigo Velenucci in the middle of a se(a)ssion and it said: you're the most beautiful guitar in the world. Peace.
Thank you for your unique contributions to the discovery of kurt's sounds. Was the tone control at zero in the jaguar aluminum test?
good for her to stand out haha, thanks for your videos, so nice. i would like to say, not sure if with the univox only the bridge pickup is used but in the case of the neck kurt used an inverted pickup for him being left handed.
Very cool!!! That guitar looks sweet 👀 What is the brand of this aluminum neck?
That's Brillant !!!
I'm shocked!
Wow. This is your best yet. It's crazy the difference between wood and aluminium
Haha thanks! I honestly can't believe more people aren't all over aluminum guitars. They've totally changed me forever
@@AaronRash I suppose it's possible people find them too bright? You did say you pretty much turned off the treble on your amp, after all. Is it super harsh with treble up a bit?
Used to get these toanz with a crate 112 and boss pedals!! We was wild in the 90’s
Hey Aaron, thank you for your videos, i always watch your videos with my mouth open. Please release your songs, when i heard them it brought me to summer-autumn memories which was very touching. I got inspired to build my own Jag after watching your holy jag video, could you please tell which songs you think were recorded with jag?
P.s you are not a shitty guitar player at all
this is phenomenal, could you do nevermind! im curious to know the guitars like lounge act and come as you are etc thanks!
the videography and the look are amazing
what gear do you use? what camera / lens ?
would you mind getting in touch ... i would love to ask you a few business questions as well
thank you
will you ever release the engine pedal wiring diagram and stuff cause i love the sound you get from it and i want to make one myself with my own twist on it
perfect!!
You and your wife are so adorable lol, another great video man
very nice!
Which mics do you use ? That would be a cool video on its own. Thanks.
When do we get the plugins ? Dude love your channel
I utero clean tones? Amazing my dude
Love "The Nirvana's"....
I know you don’t exactly listen to recommendations anymore, which I really admire that you do your own thing and you chase your own tones, but could you please consider trying Anuerysm sometime? It is by far the most confusing song I’ve tried to re-create. The chorus at the beginning the way it’s blended. You can’t hear when Kurt hits the strings… I haven’t been able to figure out if there’s more than one chorus pedal being used at once, and the newer small clones were never able to nail it. And the speaker… probably the vintage 30s, but I’m pretty confident it could be his secret Peavey cab. I have a Peavey solo and it absolutely nails the distorted tone while using a simulation of a twin reverb head/ for the mesa, and my highflier because my Jag sucks.
Hey Aaron why you don't try the speaker of the Mesa Boogie studio 22 or the 22+
It would be really interesting to hear these pickups with a wood neck just to see how different it is. Aluminum shouldn't theoretically introduce any kind of interference because it is not normally magnetic, but it is understandable that lots of the videos like the one you're mentioning don't have access to the same things that you do to test them out.
Awesome videos by the way.
Hey Travis, I've done this already actually. I had a wood neck on the build for about a month before the aluminum neck came. Totally didn't sound like this at all just from the pickups alone, once I got the aluminum neck on it is when they tone totally changed. You can check out some videos of vintage guilds with those pickups on channels like normans rare guitars. They sound awesome but they don't sound like aluminum
@Aaron Rash OK I tune in every couple of months so might have forgotten. I wonder if it is the resonance or something? Very interesting.
hey aaron, what about these crazy sansamp setting which you created to make harsh intro on Sappy on ur recreation video? It's almost pretty close, you think that may be closest thing which i can do to get that tone?
That’s badass man 😊😊 PS well done on punching 😁😁
Nice man
Love ur Jaz
Sounds amazing. Now I want an aluminium guitar!
It's amazing how the Rape Me intro tone is so close to the original. I've spent 20 years trying to reproduce it and I've never been able to. I understand the Veleno Guitar, but could you explain how to recreate a similar tone with a Jaguar? Amp settings, pedals, software... Thank you very much. It is the dream of my life.
Hey Aaron, haven't heard much on the engine pedal recently, still gonna release a run of them?
