The reason why it takes so long between the press of the button and printing, is because it has to do what we call a RIP in the professional printing world. It’s short for Raster Image Processor and still needed in 2019 for the analog mechanics of actually printing something, regardless of it being ink, laser or other means of reproducing a digital image on an analog medium.
The processor in this camera isn’t the fastest in the world, obviously, so it takes some calculation to convert a 16 megapixel image. You’ve all experienced it when sending any sizeable documents or pictures to your printers. Banging, swearing and being irritated that it doesn’t respond. That’s the computer and the printer handling the process of converting those data into something a printer can handle.

I guess the requirement was that the picture should be ready for viewing in the same time as the classic Kodak pictures. And they were successful with that. "It's under one minute! Good enough! Ship it!" :-)
Anders Enger Jensen Sorry, but your argument doesn’t hold up - these days even the simpliest FPGA general purpose chip (not even talking about dedicated purpose-built image processing chips) can handle 16MPx raster conversion in a second. Such chips are available from multiple vendors for a few dollars. This camera is simply cheap crap, assambled from the lowest possible cost parts, and sold for a huge margin, just to make some quick money from nostalgic 30-40 yr olds.
would the experience be better improved then if there was more feedback that the camera was processing the image?
@@easyflamer Yeah, just a beep or recorded shutter sound would be enough to let you know that the image was actually taken, then the wait isn't much of an issue.
matsv201 Really? You should let the people that developed JPEG viewers for the C64, IBM PC XT and other 8/16-bit machines know. I’ve also personally done a JPEG compression algorithm for a 16-bit TI MSP430 processor before.
On these machines, decoding (or encoding) isn’t fast, by any means, but it’s possible.
I love the full disclosure at the start where you said you were sent it for free but you weren't paid by the company yet not going so far to flatly say you were not paid for the video (you were paid in a sense by receiving the product).
One channel I watch sometimes got a bunch of stuff from a company and made a big thing in his video constantly saying it was not a sponsored video when the entire video was him reviewing that one companies products sent to him for free... that honestly annoyed me. "I got it for free, they didn't ask for a video, they didn't pay me money, but I'm checking the paid advertisement box because I got the product for free." Such a simple and transparent thing in my opinion.
Yes, I already have a ton of respect for how honest Mat is in his videos. That little bit of disclosure at the beginning just gave me even more respect.
Unfortunately, a product like this does not fall in the category of a product equaling payment for the video but in other instances of this happening I can see how many will believe that (like if you were sent a TV or full PC for review for example).
I agree, especially since I suspect that people who never actually paid for a product tend to not be harsh in their reviews as they otherwise would be. After all, the product cost them no skin off their back, so they have an easier time shrugging off small issues, even though for a luxury product (Say a $1k+ smartphone) there should be no small issues.
Call me overzealous but I think free products should count as "paid advertisement".

And I think importantly when you're sent something for free you don't really have the same investment in it. If you brought something and it sucks then that annoys you but if you got it for free and it sucks then you don't care too much.
I'd expect at the LEAST a fake "shutter" sound to tell you it's taken the picture and is now processing it.
I'm sure many people would like such a feature; however it may be that it was deemed to use too much power from the battery? I don't know, your guess is as good as mine.
A beep doesn't draw much battery, nor a chime, a bell, or any other positive feedback sound (that's non-mechanical of course). Oversight and bad UX, but easy to fix with firmware.
Yes. There's always a click sound when the shutter opens, which you can both feel and hear. It's just part of how analog cameras worked.
@@BilisNegra The old-timey manual feed Land cameras did make a shutter click, like any mechanical camera. The later motorized Polaroid models made a _lot_ of noise as they first took the picture and then spat the print out (which really did happen instantly, as opposed to the way this system works).
Honestly, for a camera from 1997, it’s pretty good.

Could be that they've purposefully tuned the colors to give more of a "vintage" or "retro" vibe with the more muted colors
That's what I was trying to decide, it would affect just how highly I'd rate this item. If it's intentional, maybe they could have given the option to add/remove the 'vintage colours' (or indeed give option of a few other filters, very in keeping with the Instagram generation)!

For some reason I really like the way it looks printed from the native camera. It has a really nostalgic vibe that reminds me of my old family photos.

I was just about to type that they reminded me of 70s photos as you mentioned that your wife said the same. Put me in mind of some puppets I recently saw.
I recently finally found my old school Polaroid camera, from back when they were still good. Never looked up the model, but it's obviously late 70's/early 80's going by the look and colour (unibody and the top half of the front flips up revealing the flash and options such as portrait/landscape and the colour is this really funky green that looks like they were going for evergreen/pine needle or something) It was my aunt's and she gave it to me a few years back, I think I'll stick with that. Can't find the film in any stores near me anymore, but I've been considering ordering a few packs just to take some kooky, kitschy pics for a collage on my wall. Just something about the look of them, the aesthetic, that I enjoy so much.

Look like it's an sx-70 or 600 Polariod the film it's available online and some stores and recently it's becoming very decent as the new company had make film from scratch again so the film it's not perfect
Hey Schweitzer- What a coincidence which your comment provides. About 20 years ago I recovered my Polaroid camera outfit and had no use for it. I gave it to a friend who was holding a 'garage-sale' and I specified (suggested) an asking price of 5 Dollars (U.S.). Guess what/ No takers, so I just gave it away.
I'm willing to guess that today, in current culture and interests, it would be worth a few sheckles ?
Those iPhone pictures look a bit oversaturated to be honest.
I thought that too, way too saturated. Overall compared to some Polaroid prints, the Kodak faired well.
I was gonna say..! When I saw the building in the background of the video, it looked more like the Kodak photo. The iPhone photo was a completely different colour! Like, not just a different shade... it was the difference between light cream/grey and a medium brown!
@@gorway7 The image of kodak is natural, not processaded, the quality is honest and is very good for vintage.
IPhone cameras are easily the most overrated in the world. Their pictures are overly saturated and processed

Before seeing this video, this very morning, I ordered a compact zinc paper photo printer for my mom. She's a scrapbook person. If I had seen this camera, I might have bought that instead. I feel like that would have been a mistake. Love your channel, thank you for all you do. I think you're great!

I think it gives it an authentic retro look to the prints , I like it.
I like the look as well, but not at $1 per print, when the photo kiosk at Walmart works out to just a few cents per print, or a cheap used HP photo printer where you can get generic ink tanks for less then $15 USD on eBay(I usually pay $7 - $12 for mine), and a pack of photo paper for $1 from Dollar Tree.

You’ve must have forgotten what an old instant shot camera photo like, cause “washed out and muddy” is not how they look fresh out the camera.
This is a way to get past the Polaroid patent problem, only 35 years too late.
I presume the patents have expired by now. For people who didn't understand the comment, the real Kodak introduced a range of instant cameras then had to refund all the purchasers (including my Father) when Polaroid stopped them from selling the film, which infringed their patents.
Polaroid are now paying fuji to use there instax technoligy. they abandoned theres.. impossible project ownes that now
The muted colours have a nice 70s Polaroid aesthetic, but the image appears very grainy with distinct print lines on solid areas of colour, especially the sky.

I know that there's a niche out there for these things but I just can't see that niche being big enough to justify the cost of spinning up an entire assembly line to make these things.
If the cost per print was much lower I could see this, but really yeah a photo printer, some cheap Dollar store photo paper, and an a generic ink tank is really the way to go, well that, or at least here in the US go to almost any Walmart, walk up to a photo kiosk desk with stools, and print out all kinds of sizes for next to nothing.
I agree. Are people really buying these things? My wife likes printed pictures and is a technophobe so she might like something like this but not for the cost. I think she would rather have a simple to use home photo printer.
Thats actually not as niche as you can imagine, we have several of similar cameras in the office, few of my friends have them to. This is a party toy, very god party toy, whatever people get together preferably with some alcohol this things immediately become hot commodity... and then next day on the office floor you find pictures of yourself in embarrassing poses in interesting places :)
Fuji makes a killing off of their Instax line, and Polaroid Originals is doing well enough to keep introducing new models, so the niche is big and/or spendy enough to have new entrants. I don't know how to describe it, but a real instant photo still feels like magic in a way that a Wal-Mart kiosk print does not. That justifies the cost for me, but not everyone is me, and that is fine.
@ChrisHallett83 Absurd! Can imagine Amazon will end up heavily discounting them when they discover that we Aussies aren't interested in throwing our money away like that!

I myself just bought a new Polaroid onestep+ camera. And I just love it, it's an old, non digital type of deal, but with bluetooth connection to your phone. So you can do a whole lot with your phone and the camera, but the picture won't store digital. Just the press of a button, it spits out your picture, and that's the only copy. I just love it!

Wouldn't be my type of camera, taking into account the amount of pictures I take (not to mention my patience when I'm taking pictures..), but interesting video nonetheless. And indeed, they pretty much nailed the retro "instant photo" look ;)
I mean a Polaroid took the same time- it comes out faster but then you have to wait at least as long as the printer for it to develope

You would be conspicuous for not doing the Polaroid "developing dance". P.s did you really have to keep waving a Polaroid print to make it develop or was it an urban myth to make you look stupid (asks the person who took hundreds of Polaroids at work during the 1980s).

I love the strange effect a lav mic has in outdoor environments, it sounds like you're talking indoors like in your normal videos but outside. Makes it feel like you're amazing at dubbing over your recordings or something.
This is so cool, didnt even know about these until I saw this video and I just ordered one. I have quite a few Fuji, Lomo and MINT Instax cameras but just got a Kodak Mini Shot 3 Retro the other day and love it. This one also has that vintage look to the photos. The digital version of the photos look like a sub par point and shoot with zero character. The prints however definitely have a retro vibe to them and the print size is excellent,. Cant wait!

I like the aesthetic of the zink prints, especially the ones taken from other cameras - they have quite an appealing retro look. Would be good for printing photos from my phone and sticking on a little memory board.

I had the same thought as your wife... very reminiscent of photos from old polaroid cameras, specifically due to the color balance. I wasn't alive in the 70's, but it's entirely possible that the cameras I remember from the late 80's and early 90's were of much earlier provenance, and of course any of the pictures that I saw of older generations would have been from that era.

I think it would be a great gift for someone who likes digital photography but loves the retro look of the printed articles. especially if they don't know their way around the filter settings...looks baout the same size of the HP sprocket but the retro print style it uses by default is steering me towards it more...

With the camera, you get a vintage vibe on the prints, compared to the phone, which looks really good!
Another great review. I feel my day is complete now. You must invest a whole lot of hours to give us a few minutes of pleasure, so a big Thank You. I guess this printer / camera may have some applications like printing out when mobile. But somewhat limited, especially with the lack in quality on zinc.

Cheers!! Love your videos!! I don't moan when I can watch Techmoan! Did you know Kodak made an instant camera in the early 80's? I had one. But Polaroid sued, and that was the end of that. (I have photos taken with the Kodak instant camera 1982- to when it wasn't available)
EXCELLENT review.. I guess that explains why you have nearly 1 million subscribers. Selling new on eBay for about $80.

I about had a puppet moment when it came to mentioning that the photos printed look like something straight out of the 1980s. Admittedly, they did give me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, especially the picture from the cheese shop and mall.

YES i shouted when you said they look like 1970's. When taken with another camera they look alright but with the built in camera, it looks....retro probably the kindest word. I dont know though i can't think of a time i've wanted a print out of a photo since i was a kid.
I remember when instant cameras used to pop out the photo one second after it was taken. How far we've come...
analog or digital. back in the 90s i made a picture anolog by pressing the button on a cheap camera. now its need to adjust first load and then takes a picture..

You know what? I like it. I like the prints it makes. Like you said, it gives it that retro look you only get with old film and camera's. All the pictures nowadays are too perfect.
I think the obvious retro image style is why they added the word 'Classic' into the title. The colorization instantly reminded me of my old childhood photos from the 70's and early 80's, which popped into my mind right before it was mentioned in this video.

Having grown up with an SX-70 in the house, these printed instant “photos” just don’t have the same appeal, but I do see how they would seem to be performing a similar level of magic to many 😀
Funny, for much of its existence, Polaroid instant film also worked out to be about a dollar a shot.
I do wonder about ink cartridge life and costs?
Needs an “I just took a picture” sound when u push the “shutter” button.

It's nice that the paper it uses is not photographic paper so you don't have to worry about opening it and exposing one of the sheets as would happen with a partially used instant film cartridges.
Love the rustic feeling from the camera, but there is very little old place in my town.
Seeing as how "instant cameras" these days are pretty crummy...this is probably the least crummiest of all the ones you've reviewed, Uncle Matt. It's simple, sleek, and does the job with minimal fluff. Plus, the printout is pretty nice.
Had a little smile to myself after hearing you call it the Kodak Smart Classic when it is the Smile Classic,i'm sure you knew this in editing but couldn't help myself from mentioning it too.
