In Lanegan's memoir he talks about how Duff McKagan- who didn't know him from Adam- reached out after Mark got out of rehab to help him out. Lanegan was essentially homeless, broke and in debt to the IRS. McKagan asked him (a stranger) to be a "caretaker" of his two homes, and let him use his home studio on Field Songs -a masterpiece. Yeah, so McKagan is a lovely human being.
Marks music changed my life forever
Especially as a musician
Whiskey for the Holy Ghost was so good
duff is a legend. and the coolest.
Agreed!
Field songs came out in 2001, love this interview
Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion is a brilliant album. It blows my mind that an album that good only went gold. Honestly, I think the grunge label MTV and other music outlets slapped on them the band hurt them. I feel the same way about the Melvins
It didn’t even go gold. 300k. Grunge actually gave them a place in commercial music, they released half a dozen albums before oblivion that didn’t sell more than 10k.
I prefer marks solo material.
Screaming Trees were awesome! Most underrated band of the grunge era IMHO.
Great band 🔥
I'm a long time fan of Mark Lanegan; but this story I'm about to tell you is about someone else. In around 2001 I remember I was at a Carrie Akre/ Mark Lanegan show at the Experience Music Project. At one point during the night I was standing at the bar trying to get a Coke but wasn't having success getting the bartender's attention.
While I was standing there this country western looking dude came up and struck up a conversation with me. He obviously had some clout because the bartender came up to us right away after he arrived. Well, that cowboy got me my Coke and we talked about Mark Lanegan a little. Soon someone who I assumed was his wife or girlfriend came up to us and started talking to him. He then grabbed his drink, told me to enjoy the show and they disappeared into the crowd.
I went back into the crowd as well to find my wife. While we were watching them reset the stage I was telling her about the situation at the bar and this cowboy getting me a Coke. A few minutes later Mark Lanegan came on stage. When I heard him invite his good friend Duff Mckagan on stage we looked at each other giving a visual high 5, and started looking for Duff. You wouldn't guess who I saw walk up on stage... that very same cowboy that just got me a Coke. My jaw most likely dropped just before I told my wife "Duff Mckagan just got me a Coke".
"Whiskey for the holy ghost" is an amazing album! Lanegan's best work.
