- I was chosen by John Parker as a partner to participate in a pen swap put on by Mike DeLawter over at Lost River Woodshop. The blank was a Dyed and Stabilized piece of Cottonwood in a red and white Alumilite. The end result was a beautiful pen,

Absolutely beautiful and I have to say that I don't think I've ever heard any other woodturner that I watch say that about the CA glue build up when it drips, and I hear you talk about other tips as well and I think that's awesome that you do that to help other people.
Thank you Karyn,
I just try to tell people what I would like to know about turning.

Bob

Pen came out great, Bob. I really appreciated the detail info on your CA glue finish process, I think it's your best explanation yet! I've been avoiding a CA glue finish since some early pens didn't turn out well, but I'll try again now that I have a better idea of what to look for during the process. Thank you!
Thank you Gary.

Bob
Gary, I use blue shop towels when applying CA glue (tear a 1..5" wide piece, fold to 4 layers). I've found that the white kitchen paper towels catalyze the curing of the CA glue while applying it. I try not to wipe back and forth like Bob does, since that seems to create ridges in the finish...but you may not have that problem. I use Starbond EM02 (thin like water) and EM140 (medium thick), and never use an accelerator for the reasons Bob stated.
Great pen and video Bob👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Alan.

Thank you John.

Bob, I'm a pretty new pen turner. I'm not sure if it's right or wrong but I also have had issues early on with the fogging under the CA glue in the past. Now every time I use a wood blank of any kind, after sanding I use one coat of Ossie Oil before I start my CA coats. I haven't had one single problem with fogging since then. Your opinion on this would be appreciated. By the way, I'm a huge fan of your videos. You have pretty much taught me how to turn pens and I love it. So thank's to you and all the other turners who put out the videos.
Thank you William,
I have used Boiled Linseed oil before but I’m not sure how that compares to Ossie oil. I know the BLO C/A combination really looks nice and I can’t say I ever remember having a foggy finish while using it. I wish I could offer more insight on this topic but I just don’t have any experience with it.
Regards,
Bob
That turned out really well! I need to pull out some more of that cottonwood and get it stabilized :)
I love the look of the dyed cottonwood.

Bob
Hi Bob - Greetings from Nebraska! It was fun to watch you turn a standard kit pen. I like your bespoke pens too, but I haven't graduated to that level yet! Great Tips! I'll have to try your dots on the side tip. Sweet looking pen! - Dave
Thank you David,
I can never remember that order, LOL.
Regards,
Bob
Great vid as always Bob!
"Don't wipe CA off your ways" - The same should be said when reaming (using a typical barrel trimmer/reamer setup) your tubes - never do that until CA is fully cured. The reamer will smear the CA the whole length of your tube, very thinly, and it's a royal pain to see, let alone remove. A big glob is SOO much easier to chip out using the reamer tool (like you showed). Also, the tool you show isn't long enough to reach very far if you do smear it, at which time you'll need a long file or something.
*Don't ask how many blanks I've cracked before realizing I was doing this...
Thank you Joe.

Bob
wooo hoo first comment ... i am glad you shot video of making the pen Bob i do appreciate it. You are correct in me not yet having my lathe ... but very close, and i will definitely hold up to my end.
you have been a great teacher Bob, and hope to see you at Mid Ohio Valley this year.
jp
Thank you John,
I’m working through the weekend so I won’t make the show this year. See you next year.

Bob
Really great video Bob!! Your passion for our hobby is wonderful. Question....Where did you get the deburing tool used in cleaning/removing foreign debris from inside the tube? I typically use a dental buffalo knife but your tool seems much more substantial. I will ALWAYS run a fat test tube brush following this to make sure all polishing dust is removed. I have recently watched Chad use a Drexel tool with a fine acrylic long nosed bur to even polish/buff the inside of the tube. There is nothing worse than watching your segment fracture and crack from excess pressure from debris left inside the tube!!!!!! This typically happens with some of the commercial circuit board blanks. Thank you Bob...
Thank you Robert.
I picked that tool up from eBay. I believe Penn State Sells the exact Tool too.
When you turn material that is prone to chip out do you have a negative rake tool?
I don’t own one yet but I’ve been thinking about buying one. Maybe once I get back into the shop the winter.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks for the video, Bob. I’m in the market for a disk sander. What brand is the one you have?
Craftsman. It seems to be a decent sander.
Regards,
Bob
You have a little buddy there on your shoulder...
Thank you Clay.

Hey question Bob why the blue painters tape on the finger? and I mark my micro pads the same why the colors are to close to tell about at a glance.
The blue tape keeps the paper towels from sticking to my finger if they get saturated with C/A. The tape will peel right off but the towel and glue stay for several days.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks that will be a big saver for me I've been going through rubber gloves like their free. Lol
I’ve had a glove stick to a blank before, not fun.
Regards,
Bob
Nice pen Bob. Where did you get the deburring tool??
eBay I’ve seen them on PSI’s website but they were cheaper there.
Regards,
Bob
Hey, that means your going to get a "Parker" pen.
Possibly.
Regards,
Bob
What a great blank by accident. And I have no idea how to spell chatuence? Chatoyance?
LOL, I can’t spell it either, probably didn’t pronounce it correctly either.
Regards,
Bob
what pen turner forums do ya'll recommend??? BTW Nice Pen!!!
Hello Steve,

I just recieved 4 pieces of wood. Teak from the deck of the USS New Jersey. Looking to find a good pen kit for this precious resource. What would you recommend?
Hi Bob i was wondering where you get your tools from
Hello Trenton,
Is there a particular tool or tools you’re interested in? I find them at many different places and I’d be happy to share the names. I just wasn’t sure exactly what you were looking for.
Regards,
Bob
RJBWoodTurner The one you use to turn most of your pens
That’s a 3/4” Benjamin’s Best roughing gouge from Penn State. If you’re a new turner, I’d look at carbide. Sharpening this gouge requires equipment.
RJBWoodTurner ok thanks and how would you recommend sharpening a carbide tool
You don’t have to, you just rotate till it’s dull then buy a new one.
Regards,
Bob
Yea too bad the red didnt stay. But still turned out nice.
Thank you. Regards,
Bob
My only question, what is the point of using wood if it's just gonna feel like plastic when your done? I personally prefer my wood pens to look and feel like wood.
Some people really like that polished look and feel. Also, some woods are not as durable, especially those that require stabilization, so a CA glue finish help those pens last longer. I have the same personal preference as you, though, and usually finish my pens with a wax finish.
Thank you Gary,
Regards,
Bob
Hello April,
It’s just a personal preference.

Bob
