      So long as Will's has got a pass thru hole, they can forge just about anything in that thing (except for maybe a hungamunga) . It is also far more efficient than Alec's previous forge by the looks of it. 2" of Ceramic wool, hard-face dense refractory, and Zirconium silicate coating and you've got a cheap and super efficient forge that will get as hot as you want.

    So when your looking at steels with other elemental additives. Look for the carbon equivalency. Adding any intermittent element will discourage dislocation and make the steel act like it has a higher carbon content as well as add other attributes. Silicon makes steel have more flow ability and weld ability. Boron added in high amounts make a steel brittle, but in small amounts makes it tougher. Basically, all your're looking for is 'Carbon Equivalency'
    Really enjoyed it! Keep it up

    • @DarkWolf-yr1ml
      @DarkWolf-yr1ml 5 років тому

      the short answer: yes...kinda
      the long answer: you can forge a knife out of an end mill but the difficulty of it is that it has already been pre-heat treated from a factory for a very specific purpose, so you would have to actually have a high temperature electronic controlled heat treatment oven, preferably with an inert gas seal system that would allow you to heat the steel at a very specific rate, and hold it at high temperature for a specified amount of time, then also be able to cool it at specified rate as well, then be able to actually take the steel and forge it into proper shape.
      after that to be able to heat treat the steel for blade worthy performance it would be imperative to have the same heat treatment kiln to be able to heat the steel and hold at a specific temperature for a certain amount of time so that all of the carbides from the tungsten, vanadium, and cobalt have proper time to be put into solution into the matrix within the carbon cube form, without this you would not be getting any worth out of the steel as from just a gas forge, the ability to control specific temperature ranges is very difficult as the temperatures can vary by 100+ degree's, and for extended hold times you begin to lose a very large amount of integrity from the carbides possibly coming in and out of solution or not entering solution of the matrix at all. also from the wide ranging temperature swings the possibility of micro fractures is exponentially increased. while it is a nice idea to be able to use this steel for a knife, there are also much better options, while this is a "cutting" tool, it does not have the kind of alloying contents in the proper proportions to be truely successful in a traditional "knife" sense of the term. also the handling of the steel for heat treatment is much more advanced than i think either Alec or Will, have the current knowledge to deal with, they also dont currently have the kind of equipment to do it true justice.

    When I was a wee lad I tried to forge something from an old machinist's tool bit blank. That was tungsten-type HSS. I couldn't get it hot enough, and it just snapped when I started hammering on it.

  • @user-qo4tx6pc8r
    @user-qo4tx6pc8r 5 років тому

    As you said, both of them are made of high speed steel. The tungsten and cobalt in HSS are there to help prevent the steel from deforming while hot. Thus, it was harder to forge than normal steel.
