As the guards were running past us, I yelled out, "Get him! He's got donuts!" I did a lot of work in a popular mall and the security spent 99% of their time harassing contractors. Chasing us down for our IDs, shutting the job down for making to much noise, leaving boot prints on the floor...all kinds of stupid nonsense. And the day came when a group of people robbed the Louis Vuitton in the middle of the day and made off with $50,000 worth of merch...after that any time security said anything to me I threw in their face that they were more concerned with harassing me for doing my job than they were with stopping real crime and that they are joke ..

    I worked at Express in the mall in high school. They’d tell you that if you see a person stealing then you can’t accuse them of it because they technically didn’t steal it until they leave the store with it and then if they leave the store, you can not leave the store to pursue them because then it’s a liability issue for you to do that outside of the store. So yeah a lot of stores you can technically now walk in and walk out with items and unless outside security is around to stop you then nobody is doing shit about it. Stores care more about the thief getting injured outside the store by their staff and being sued than they do about their missing items

      The moment you do engage and the thief gets hurt, then suddenly you’re the bad guy and the lawsuit comes. The only thing is they won’t sue you, they’ll sue the store (based on legal advice) to get the most money out of them. Corporate would rather fire that person and host “Ethics Training” which is really just a PR stunt

    • @danieltarczynski6559
      @danieltarczynski6559 Місяць тому +2

      That’s the policy for any major corporate store. It is a liability issue if you engage a shoplifter and get hurt or seriously injure someone for a relatively minor shoplifting offense the store ends up having to deal with larger more costly issues like workers comp claims.
      The days where store security would try to detain people for shoplifting were mostly due to the fact that stores didn’t have cameras or cameras didn’t have good quality so once they left the store they pretty much got away with it.
      Now people shoplifting get caught on High Definition cameras and it is just easier for the store to not engage and let the police deal with theft which is better for the employees who don’t get paid enough to deal with that shit

    About 20 years ago my wife was managing a Spencer's at the mall in our town. Just by happenstance at the exact same time I was bringing her lunch she was trying to stop a shoplifter from taking some items. I watched him forcefully shove my wife to the side and start to walk out of the store not knowing who I was. I am 6'7", 265 lb and I used to play defensive end in college. This guy was like a 19 year old black dude who was maybe all of 5 ft 9, 140 lb. I just grabbed him by the throat with both hands and started squeezing. My wife had to pull me off so I didn't kill him. Anyways, he ran away before Mall security could get there. But years later I remember we were talking and I just out of the blue asked her if that guy ever came back to the store and she said "nope"?

    It’s the same in the UK. Our store security is only there to say “you can’t bring drinks inside”. Security is only there as a visual deterrent, and mall security can’t stop or accuse anybody of anything. The only thing really stopping anybody from doing whatever they want is the embarrassment of people seeing them. If someone doesn’t care what people think, then no rules apply to them. Those of us that work in stores get fired if we try to stop someone stealing or accuse them, the managers tell us “we’re insured, your safety is more important”, but then if we have stocktake and find items missing, we get in trouble for not being more of a deterrent. But if we stand around being a deterrent all day, we get in trouble for not focusing on customer service and reaching targets.
    And this extends all the way up to the police level, where even people found with knives or committing crime get super lenient sentencing, and the police will only attempt to do anything AFTER the crime has already been committed.

    I was a department store plain clothed security guard in the mid 70's, while in college. No cameras! We had to covertly spot and catch them. Our policy was that i had to identify the specific item stolen and exact location before i could stop them. Took a lot more skill than sitting in a backroom watching a camera. As for calling them a "pussy".... all that does is promote fights and likely lawsuits. We had a great relationship with cops. In fact, as we were wating for the cops, we completed their incident report for them. We charged every thief we caught.

    Can you imagine how bad cops have it. We have rules to specifically avoid arresting juveniles and if you arrest a adult for theft they’ll literally be out before the end of your shift. The reason why most cops I’m sure have an attitude is because everyone knows it’s a waste of time. Like Walgreens calls so many damn times per day cause people steal. By the time the call gets dispatched to us based on priority and by the time we get there, the offenders are long gone so it’s like why even bother calling, these corporate stores don’t want to lock up criminals and the State Attorney’s don’t want them in jail, it’s all a joke.
