In the beginning of 2022, after restoring my father's 1972 Mido Oceanstar, I developed a passion for watches and started my own, yet small collection, with a Seiko 5 (40 mm) SRPE55, thanks to Teddy's advices. It definitely is an excellent cost/benefit piece and maybe one of the best entrance doors to horology. Thanks Teddy for the amazing job!

These Seiko 5 sports watches I think would be one hell of a good starter watch, say if you are going to buy your first automatic. Also with a smaller 38mm case, it's nice to think that the movement takes up most of the case with I presume a smaller spacer.

The watch-makers are finally coming to their senses and returning case sizes to sizes that don't dwarf the wrist and look like a caricature of a watch. That said, I especially like the beige, orange and blue dial versions of this watch......great looking. I recently took delivery of a Baltic MR01 in salmon (did an unboxing video) and at 36mm, that is on the large side of what I would wear on my 7" wrist. Yet, kudos to Baltic for making that watch in 36mm and kudos to some other manufacturers to are scaling down sizes.

I received one (orange dial) for my birthday in June and love it! It did have an issue that required I send it to seiko for servicing. The movement would stop when the watch was turned on its side. So I shipped the watch to Seiko USA service center and received it back within a week in fully functional condition. That aside the watch is very attractive and I will continue to buy other seikos as a collector.

Ive binged several of your videos, Teddy, and really appreciate thepractical advice that youre providing, especially around avoiding impulse buying and watches to avoid, e.g., homag, direct rips, etc. I just got into (the last 72 hours) into looking at a new watch to purchase and, wihtout knowing that it had been discontinued, focused on the SKX013. For those reading this comment (and Teddy, too), is this new Seiko 5 a sound watch purchase for an everyday wear watch? I think Im interested in something can be worn while hiking and fishing, worn with jeans but also slacks and a jacket.

I own the biege one and I love it. One of the things that I like about this watch is it's legibitly, and this greatly attributed to the fact that it uses mineral crystal instead of saphire and that the case is no polised. High polishing makes the watch feels like a mirror, and saphire is highly reflective even with AR. Mineral glass makes you actually see the dial!

  • @Krauser1226
    @Krauser1226 10 місяців тому +4

Love my SRPK31, especially having a 6" wrist. Great little piece and mines running around +5 seconds a day which I absolutely can't complain about. I don't think these are really worth the $325 MSRP that Seiko has asked, but like most Seikos, you can grab them much cheaper, and I got mine new for $180. At that price, they're much more compelling.
Also, I'd have liked a screwdown crown myself, but there's a misconception that the screwdown crown itself is what gives a watch its water resistance, and it's not. The gaskets and seals elsewhere are. A screwdown crown can help prevent movement of the crown if it's accidentally moved or pulled out underwater which, in fairness, is still a benefit, but it's not what allows a watch to hit or guarantee additional depth and water resistance ratings. And let's be honest, most of us aren't divers and if we were, we're not bringing a Seiko 5 with us. Seiko has a bunch of alternatives that are actually ISO rated already.

I have the black and love it, though I get a little self conscious when I encounter someone wearing a Submariner, which is more an more these days. I can afford the upgrade so I will probably do it now that the sub grey market prices have dropped. If you don’t have Rolex colleagues or you ego is bulletproof then this watch as epic to own. Annoying about Submariners is that they don’t have Day, but they make up for it with the Date magnification, which I would benefit from.

These look great and I'm sure they're very well made but being an owner of the 42mm variant, I don't see the necessity of the smaller dial which, when lug to lug is considered, isn't very different. If anyone is considering them and cannot choose I'd highly reccomend trying on both, especially as the 42mm wears a lot smaller and can be had at quite a discounted price in some variations.

I agree. I also have the standard 42 mm version and it does wear smaller than the case dimensions would suggest, this is coming from a guy with small 6 inch wrists. The lugs also curve and taper quite a bit, making the whole watch actually compact. Though I prefer watches that are between 36 - 40mm, the standard 42mm version of this Seiko, again, is surprisingly compact given its dimensions.

38mm will be lighter than 42mm. Not everyone wants a heavy watch. Plus this allows them to crossover into the female market.

Agree, this is not a watch that needed a smaller case. I'm kind of confused, actually.

Amazingly the 42mm is fine on my 6.5 inch wrist. In fact it wears better than my 40mm Tissot Visodate. Slightly oversized perhaps but not noticeably so. 38/39mm is probably the sweet spot for me but the secret with the 42mm 5KX is the short curved lugs, which Swiss brands like Tissot tend not to favour.

@paulc9588 I found this with the PRX. 40mm looked too big on me. Really highlights the importance of the lug to lug which annoyingly isn't always included.

I have the orange GMT 42mm. Love it. It looks smaller than other 42mms I have. I like the snoopy version of the 28mm, but wonder if it will look too small on a 17cm wrist :/

Will they bring out 30- 36mm for the ladies? I have very small wrist and would like to have this watch. I tried it on in the shop and I liked it. I did not buy it because I was not sure I would wear it.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for similar alternatives, would love to hear about them.

I have the white dial version, but the day/date is not centered. It sits higher that the top of the numbers/letters are nearly touching the roof of the window. People who own the watch, can you check yours.. thanks
