@@carlthor91 I do OTR also but nothing is stopping you from working on the truck wherever it breaks down. I’ve done water pump in a truck stop parking lot and also wheel seals. Just being tools with you parts can be delivered that’s not a problem
This dude is a real driver in my book. Swings by the shop and bends a new fuel line!!!!!! Not many drivers have the know how. Owner operators have to make and save money wherever they can. Sometimes it’s not about how much you can make but how much you can save. C’mon
The bearings looked good and the bottom of the cylinders also. I would have made the same call as you did as to the condition of the engine. I say run her awhile and let her make some money. I think you have done an outstanding job on Ole Red.
You never fix anything until it’s broke that common sense for most people, if someone comments that you should have rebuilt it first they have to much money or no sense. You keep doing you, we’re along for the ride, just wishing I had a truck to work on👍🏼
Keyboard mechanics always tell you you should change/rebuild everything... they have a name for that, it’s called a new truck! You have to make your decisions on the info you have on reviving older equipment, you may get bit on something every once in a while, but even new equipment breaks.
Man i have been watching this truck get rebuilt since you started out on it and just realized it has two tone red paint on it. I must have been sleeping when you painted the top amd the fenders. Be safe and god bless

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I had a truck once that if you filled it with oil to the max would drop it to quarter on the stick after about 3000kms. I kept topping it up till I tried just keeping an eye on it and at a quarter it stayed between oil changes. 🤷🏼♂️ Keep the videos coming. 👍🏼

I used to be a truck mechanic myself when I was an apprentice, but back in 1988 got my diploma so have after that only worked on cars.. so some of the stuff you do makes me remind the younger days.. Good call on the engine, suggest to let it run more and perhaps change oil one more time before the decision to do the overhaul on the engine.. you could be lucky that oil rings cleans up and start to work properly again..
Hi Ezra. Apply Motor Flush! Take out the glow plugs, pour the motor flush into the cylinders and leave it overnight. You can repeat the process several times. Motor flush will dissolve the carbon deposit under the rings and place the ring in a right place. The method works 7/10 cases. After all be sure to change the oil. To see if the problem is solved, measure the compression on each cylinder before and after, You'll see the differences right away. G.
My opinion . for what its worth ... this is one of the best restorations of a truck on youtube ,primarily because its being put to work , the reason it was originally built , plus the up-grades in drive line / chassis to cope/work in 2021 show what with a lot of knowledge and ability can be achieved , guessing from what I have seen on Twin Sticks this resto/rebuild is still way cheaper than buying a secondhand/used working truck to the same spec from an auction or dealer , plus Mr Ezrider shows it all cock-ups and all . Hope he does the in-frame engine build himself for 2 reasons its cheaper and piece of mind its been done correctly .... I did same thing on my unit years ago ,the test run was a Port to Port round trip to southern Spain ..Piece of mind is worth a lot .

That old Cummins will probably need to be broken back in, after sitting for 16 years, give her a chance for the rings to seat, and the oil use may go away! Keep a close eye on it, as you said, and you may be surprised at the end of the season, the oil use might just go away! "Ol Red" is looking large! You did a great job! One thing i have found out in the many years of running Cummins motors, mine all used oil unless i put Mobil Delvac 15/40 in them! I don't know what brand oil you use, but mine did not like anything but Mobil Delvac 15/40! Just my experience with a old NTC350, KT 450, NTC 400, and N-14! The CAT motors liked Rotella T, and the few Detroits i ran it was Delo 400!
another great video. Had a friend that had a 1988 Kenworth T600 with a 3406B Cat 425 Air to Air that absolutely right from the time he got it wouldn't run with the oil at the top of the dipstick. Would take that first gallon seemed to burn that 1st gallon up after a oil change & then she would run to the 10,000 mile mark without any more oil to added. Never failed if you tried to run her at the top of dipstick she didn't want it in her. put over 500,000 miles on it before overhauling it & put another 500,000 plus miles on it before selling it to farmer. truck is still used a little bit. She just didn't like to be completely fill up to top of dipstick. sure you have heard of such motors in your life, heck ya ran into everything else nothing surprises you.
Oil consumption is high, but you're doing right running it as is for a while - after all, if you keep it topped up, bar the bother and cost of the oil, it won't do any harm. More miles also gives you a better feel for the truck, and if I were you I'd really be wanting to do the re build myself.

That was how I was taught and really you’re the only one pulling the trailer so you don’t have to worry too much on that one. 🤩 It sure is nice having a nice shop to work in...it makes all the difference. Did that frame come with the riser bars for your 5th wheel? I really don’t recall in that video. Those things are hard to move by yourself! But you Got Er Dun! 😳 I’m glad that the height adjustment fixed the vibration issue! 🧐 It goes to show you that if you pay attention to your rig and keep up on the maintenance, you can really tell when something isn’t just right. I have a Cummins NTC-400 big cam IV that needs some work sitting at my yard, I pulled it from a friend's 60 ton crane that I swapped over to a isx-15 for emissions compliance. My friend bought the engine at a auction and it was a complete cummins reman that had been sitting for 20 years after it was remaned. I told him to check it over before installing but he was in too much of a hurry to get the crane back on the road. He ran it for about a month and it lost 2 cylinders, I pulled the pan off and 2 of those cheap plastic piston oil nozzles broke off and took out the cylinders. It is a really good core and it has reman cummins heads, turbo, injectors, fuel pump and everything else. The engine came with a 500hp dyno sheet when it was purchased. It would be perfect for you to rebuild and swap when ready, all it really needs is 2 cylinder packs. I don't know how far you are from California but it is just sitting at my yard.

What I done back in the day I got me another big Cam 400 out of an old truck, Strip Her down Started from the bear block and built me a real nice 400, Same thoughts that you have on your engine now, And when the Winter came around my new 400 was built pull the old one out put the new down in it , 3 days later fired her up , But it is your truck And you are the decision maker be save

That’s great. You had minors issues and you were able to fix em all. To me that’s what I call success. The engine is taking oil, so what? No one could have predicted that and I do not believe that you have a money tree growing in your backyard. You did spend quite a bit of money to bring your truck to what it is right now, it’s time that it bring some money back. Run it, monitor the oil consumption and add as required. If it gets worse, then tough luck that’s not your fault but maybe, hopefully, it can finish this season. I understand that the price of 7 gallon of oil a week add up to a pretty penny after a few weeks. It’s not always easy being owner/operator. I have complete faith that whatever you decide to do will make perfect sense. Enjoy a nice day!
If it gets worse? One gallon in a 1000 miles is friggin terrible. A gallon or 2 in 10k is fine, think about it... a gallon every other day at 500 miles a day.
Thanks for taking us along on this journey Ezra, I'm sure most if not all the work you've done on this truck and the Mack could be done faster if you didn't have to spend time setting up a camera to get a shot. Cummins will use oil down to where it wants to run , almost every big cam I’ve had and ran would use oil to a certain point on the dip stick than stop

If it uses a gallon of oil every thousand miles then it sounds like it changes itself. Just put some new filters on.
Like some 238 and 318 Detroits I drove in the 70s--exactly the same oil consumption. No need to change the oil, just keep adding.

I would check the turbo and coolant level, keep a eye on the easy stuff first. Then the inframe. But that's just what I would do.

The things that you are doing to your old truck are really keeping it in line with DOT safety specs
im using it as a commercial truck so it needs to meet dot standards.

I understand that the price of 7 gallon of oil a week add up to a pretty penny after a few weeks. It’s not always easy being owner/operator. I have complete faith that whatever you decide to do will make perfect sense. Enjoy a nice day!
If it gets worse? One gallon in a 1000 miles is friggin terrible. A gallon or 2 in 10k is fine, think about it... a gallon every other day at 500 miles a day.

Thanks for taking us along on this journey Ezra, I'm sure most if not all the work you've done on this truck and the Mack could be done faster if you didn't have to spend time setting up a camera to get a shot.
