In Switzerland you'd have to pay a big dime, go to jail for 1 to 4 years, loose your license for at least two years, and your car can be confiscated and sold, or scrapped.

If you are doing twice the speed limit in Germany police will PRESUME that you are doing it deliberately and therefore double the fine. Which ist still far too little compared to scandinavian countries.

    They are called Dunlop Valve.
They are only rated for up to 6 bar and you can't check the pressure on them. You can only read the pressure while you're pumping up the tire and the reading will be a little higher than the actual pressure.
But pressure gauges won't work since the valve only works one way.

I've only been a mechanic for a few years, but doing the Shimano "Inspection" made me feel like a chimpanzee assembling a jet plane. It is far beyond anything a normal shop mech would do. Utter stupidity. People are going to get hurt.

    • @joelecho
      @joelecho 7 місяців тому +5

It's possible that you're the best bike mechanic on earth, and you're still not going to know if a crank that passes their inspection is just a day or two away from corrosion getting bad enough that it begins to fail. All you can really determine is if it's failed already.
In my opinion (I feel like such a dork saying "my professional background is engineering" in a youtube comment, but I feel like in this case it's valid, lol) a good portion of the cranks made this way will eventually fail, and it's just a matter of time, exposure to challenging conditions, and whether or not they are replaced with new ones before that point is reached. The design is inherently vulnerable to it, and the new design seems to be aiming to reduce moisture ingress (to reduce corrosion) rather than addressing the core vulnerability of the way the two pieces are bonded together. I'm not certain with the latest generation of cranks but in the 7000/8000/9000 era, 105 cranks were bonded together differently and are much more robust, so if I'm going to use Shimano cranks these days, it's 105, even on an otherwise higher end groupset.
Anyway, all that to say, I think you're bang on with your conclusion. People are going to get hurt. I'm not sure to what degree you could validate these even with non destructive testing using very extensive engineering tools, never mind with the tools available to a bike shop. There are tonnes of amazing bike mechanics, but even Nino Schurters mechanic isn't going to be able to tell you that your crank wont fail in the next month. Only if it's already started failing, and by that point from a safety perspective, it could go from just-in-time to too late very very quickly.
I understand how prohibitively expensive it would be to replace all of these cranks, but like you said, people are going to get hurt, and the longer these cranks are on bikes the more that will happen. And I think a lot of people, including myself, are perfectly happy on their really nice 11 speed mechanical setups, and want to ride those for a long long time, which may mean more of the older ones start to fail. At some point that, too could get really ugly for Shimano.
If this were happening to a crucial part in a car, there would be a full recall and that's that. It's concerning that so far the strategy for a critical bike part is "we'll replace yours but only if it breaks". What if it breaks when you accelerate out of a corner in your biggest gear on a mountain decent? Yikes.

I also ride a motorcycle, which means I take a lot more care, and pay a lot more attention further up the road than a standard car only driver would do. As the same with Bicycles if you come a cropper against a solid object it will end very badly for you. So I feel that all car drivers should be forced to spend X amount of time on a bicycle or scooter/motorcycle to learn their road craft and compassion before they jump in a sealed cocoon. Obviously there would have to be some exceptions due to disability, for example but I feel it would benefit everyone.

It sounds like people are just getting lazier. We went from mechanical to Di2, and the issues solved, noone had an issue with before. Now wireless groupsets. I have been using Di2 since 2011 and E-Tap since 2020. Currently running Red AXS ETap 12 speed on a bike and Dura Ace Di2 12 speed on another. I also have two mechanical Dura Ace 11 speed bikes. Some people (non cyclists) find it hard to see the bigger picture. A motorist who is willing to put a cyclist in danger, knowing just how vulnerable they are to a motor vehicle, won't think twice about doing dangerous sh!t around other motorists or in situations where the risk is not so obvious. These are the drivers who speed ALL the time, tailgate, block junctions, race the lights, overtake on blind bends/hills, and drive through the 20mph zone past our kids schools at 50+.
But "nobody likes a snitch"? LOL some people just need to grow up.

RE Shimano cranks. My Ultegra crank looked fine but started clicking. I have a spare tiagra crank that I swapped it with including the 1x chain ring I use and pedals. So the entire drivetrain is the same except crank arms ... no clicking. Took it for inspection at my local bike shop, told them about the clicking and was surprised they passed it and when i questioned them they became quite combative. Looking at the crank afterwards it was as dirty as when I gave it to them. Given that a thorough clean is part of the inspection I can only assume it wasn't actually inspected properly according to the protocol.
Not happy, I spoke to Madison and they told me that the clicking should have triggered a return to Shimano and to get it inspected at a shop further away that they recommended. I did and they failed it.
The assumption is that all bike shops are scrupulous and honest which is why we hear about shops sending all cranks back but of course less than honest shops also exist. Why would a shop not properly inspect a crank but still pass it? I'm speculating here but my understanding is they get paid the same pass or fail, but a fail involves a whole lot of work whereas a pass involves filling out a form and claiming the inspection fee whether the work was carried out or not. For a lazy and dishonest shop owner taking a cursory look and passing it is easy money compared to doing the job properly.

  • @Bikefixers
    @Bikefixers 8 місяців тому +1

As a Bike Shop carrying out the Shimano Crankset inspections I always advise the Customer that if the Crankset passes the inspection it does not mean it won't fail at some point in the Future and the inspection is a bit like the MOT on a car its only good on that day and if they hear any creaking noises they should bring it back in for another inspection asap. I tend to air on the conservative side when inspecting the Cranksets and if there is any doubt it will fail the inspection and be returned for a warranty replacement. I am sure I am not the only Bike Shop taking this approach.

It surprised me that I have encountered much more violence from car drivers as a cyclist over the years than Mikey has. I had one gentleman overtake me, then park on an intersection and get out of his car to fight me. I had one who accelerated into me and my bike while I was facing him on the road. Another one chased me through the traffic and tried to drive over me or hit me from the side.
That's the most violent examples that I can think of. The two latter cases I reported to the police but they didn't take action.
The driver in the last example sued me for damaging his car and harassing him with my apparently presence on the road and his case came to court. The first judge found me guilty and I needed to escalate it to the next court to get most convictions reversed. That all happened in Germany.

Mikey inspired me to get my own safety camera and start reporting close passes and other dangerous behaviour on the road. But the main benefit for me is the deterrent effect of having an easily visible camera on you. It definitively makes an impact on how motor drivers behave around you, to the point where it's easy to manage the few odd d**khead cases. Those I do report.

End of the day, use of the road by anything other than your own 2 feet is a privilege not a right. The more dangerous your mode of transport the more of a privilege it is. I think many car drivers are upset by the fact that the world is trying to build them out of it - and with good reason. For far too long we have relinquished huge amounts of space purely so those with cars can drive them around, and now in the modern era we're realising that we should really be prioritising people, not their private transport. Cars are an exceptional tool for getting where you want, but every tool has it's use case. You wouldn't use a saw to bang a nail into a fence, and you shouldn't really use a car for driving around town.
End of the day, the people who react badly to this are the people who commit these offences themselves. After all, if they didn't run red lights, text while driving, and drive down the on-coming lane to skip traffic, what have they got to fear? It's one thing breaking laws that are purely an issue of convenience - for example, illegally streaming content because you don't want to pay extortionate subscription fees - but it's another thing to put other's lives in danger when doing so.
It's similar to drink drivers. Plenty of videos from UK local police forces on youtube of them arresting drunk drivers and they all say the same thing. "I wouldn't hurt anyone" or "I'm not a bad person", all the while they are oblivious to the ambulance crew just meters away desperately trying to resuscitate the mother and child that they very much did hurt. Most, if not all, of these drivers seem to think that it's fine to be on their phone because they're stationary in traffic, or that they wouldn't hit someone while speeding, etc. They all seem to fail to grasp the concept of lethality. The average car is capable of killing a person at 5mph. That's a simple fact. All it takes is to ease your way forwards, still texting, and rear-end the traffic in-front of you, and in doing so crush the pedestrian who had decided to cross the road while the traffic was at a standstill.
Imagine if those cars were loaded guns. Would these people flagrantly point their gun around and then complain when someone reported them to the police for putting everyone else in danger? The responsibility of driving is being aware of your surroundings - you have at your power the ability to kill and maim with little to no effort, it is your duty to ensure (as much as is possible) that those things do not happen.

At 56:16, so good to hear London police taking road safety seriously. I've been in a meeting with management from Chicago police where an administrator quite openly admit to speeding herself and regarded speeding on Lake Shore Drive as a victimless crime. Aside from the exposure of the bike trail to reckless driving, and the injury- or fatal-causing accidents, and the boost to motor vehicle insurance costs for Chicago, I see all the damage to infrastructure, coming out of my property taxes. Victimless my foot.

really disappointed of Shimano - two issues: 1) only a full recall would be appropriate 2) replacement cranks suffer the same constructional issue.
And, yes, shops sending them in without even inspecting are doing the RIGHT thing - why should either the shop or the customer take the risk? S. screwed it up, S. should fix it. BTW: am a Shimano fanboy, but happy to have Race Face Carbon cranks on my otherwise full XTR XC Fully, and ROTOR Aldhu on my Gravel - so, only a Dura Ace crank to replace on my endurance racer...

With the latest statistics more cyclists are killed on country roads than in built up urban areas like London, this guy is a Legend showing people what they dont want to acknowledge themselves and its shocking to see what people resort to, to try and justify their actions. When the new rules for the highway code came in to try and give cyclists more visibility as road users, it was sadly ignored and dismissed. If we want change to make cycling safe in the UK we can always vote for a government that will actually do something productive about it.

Talking about ABS coming in and drivers getting faster , it reminds me of a comment a psychologist made , if we didn’t have an airbag in our steering wheel , but a 12” bayonet , we would all drive a lot slower and brake a lot sooner . Food for thought . Like money said , we all have skin in this , but as car drivers we feel protected and the cyclist are pain.

We've defaulted to submitting cases, getting the RAs and shipping all affected cranks (with the matching production codes), cleaned and bare of chainrings. Shimano have been good to support our customers, though a recent case means over a month wait for one person, as their crank match is still en route from point of manufacture.
New cranks - with a fresh Shimano warrantee! - are not a bad result, but it feels like the word is slow in getting out - most riders with these cranks don't know about the recall - and I think having more cranks on hand now is essential to support riders bringing their road rigs in to swap out trainer tires or wake them up... nobody wants to lose a month of riding.

SRAM patented having a removable battery on each derailleur.
This is why Shimano have had to use a built in battery and not a swapable one.
Most of the barriers to component development now are patent related.
This is why SRAM still can not make a reliable front derailleur, why their chains have no chamfers and why it took until Shimano's patent to run out to use hyperglide style ramps.

I regularly change between several bikes with different electronic and mechanical groupsets and yes, electronic shifting is great, but having a fully mechanical and well maintained system ist an absolute blast. The lever throw, clickiness and general feel of the shifting mechanism in a mechanical groupset is unparalleled imo. electronic shifting works awesome but feels kind of generic and not that exciting...

As a cyclist, who used to ride in London regularly, 99% of drivers on the road are fine. They give you space, and in many cases are over cautious. It's just a small percentage of utter bell ends who have ego issues and think they can flout rules when they feel like it. Of course, that 1% is a very large number in itself due to the amount of drivers on the road. So a shout out to all the drivers who DO take care around cyclists and a big fuck you to all the others who think they own the road.

In regard to having to bring your bike to a shop for inspection even though you work on your own bike. Removing and installing a shimano road crank takes MINUTES- you can do that yourself and inspect the crank for cracks, then bring the crank to a dealer if you see a crack. Easy Peazy.

I imagine Shimano will eventually replace them all. But by doing the inspection process, it means it'll be a trickle of replacement cranksets meaning they can keep up with demand. Imagine if they said, we'll replace them all straight away, they'd have more upset customers as they wouldn't be able to keep up

On the cranks - I ride an affected Ultegra set too and now every time there's a bit of creaking sound I am quite concerned. And having to go to a shop every time to see if it has ALREADY failed is ridiculous. I went into the shop last week for another inspection after loud persistent creaks, they believe it has not failed (yet). Peace of mind will not come from going for an inspection regularly.

If Shimano comes out with a fully wireless groupset that would be awesome. My bike only has external cable routing, so it's either Shimano mechanical or SRAM eTap. The mechanics at my local shop all say the GRX is the better option in terms of overall quality, even if eTap is easier to install.

With respect to the Shimano Cranks, most cranks will be experiencing this deterioration slowly already. Many of them will be pulled off of bikes before they ever fail because they'll be upgraded before then or the bikes will stop being ridden. But all your bike mechanic can tell you is that it was safe the last time you got on it. Even the best mechanic in the world can't tell you if it's one day away from that corrosion becoming too much and causing the beginnings of failure. And once it's started to come apart, whether it breaks quickly or slowly is a matter of environment, how hard it's being ridden, etc.
You or I might take a few weeks to notice if they began coming apart, but if the first small crack appears in MvDP's cranks midway through an early cobbled secteur in Ronde van Vlaanderen, and he smashes a thousand watt attack starting from fairly low cadence (so with massive torque) on a cobbled climb late in the race, it's very possible that having rattled those cranks over cobbles all day when already cracked would be enough that he could rip the crank off his bike in the same race it started to fail. I'm not saying it's likely, but I think it's hard to say it's not possible.
If I were a pro team, I'd have 105 on my riders training bikes, and I'd be swapping my dura ace cranks out for a new set mid year. Heck, I'd be on 105 cranks for racing if sponsors allowed, even if they had to send me ones with "Dura Ace" stickers on the side.

I think people who get upset when being snitched or tattled on are immature. This is like being mad at your teachers or parents when you were a child because you got punished for doing something wrong.
Did you break the law? Yes? Ok, well there's consequences to that, regardless of WHO reported you. Don't like that? Then stop breaking the law. Traffic laws are most often put in place for a reason - to save lives. Those who break those laws intentionally have little/no regard for human life and shouldn't be driving.

Honestly, I prefer my 11 sp di2 not being wireless. I already have to plug in my lights, computer, and cameras (I do ride with 2 gopros) off the bike. I already have to change a coin battery in my HRM every hundred hours as well. Infrequent as it would be, staying on top of 2-4 more coin batteries and adding another charging dock for derailleurs would be more hassle than the one time I had to route di2 cables through my frame. Since I did decide to run an electronic group set, I much prefer just plugging it in overnight every 3 months over having to keep track of another charging station.
Sure, if I ever forget to charge it, I'm especially screwed. In the event that happens I may change my mind, but my computer tells me my di2 battery level so I don't see that being an issue.
