    Fantastic episode as always! The old world will be my first time playing fantasy as I was slightly too young to get into 8th edition, and trying to find decent second hand models has proved to be very costly. It’ll be interesting to see what the ratio of new to veteran players will be.

    An excellent listen - thank you. I have not played since 6th edition but I am looking forward to getting back into the game when I have local players again.

    Cheers for the episode. Will be watching this one tomorrow.
    Looks like an interesting group of scenarios for the event and some good house rules. Kinda liked the one where you had to randomize cannon shots against riders on monsters.

    As with all games, TOW will live or die by its success with the casual players. Tournaments will be a nice showroom for the extreme lists, and hopefully develop the game overall by encouraging a variety of metas. If TOW is not robust enough to get many a casual engaged - and KEEPING them engaged - we will soon be back to where we are right now. I keep hoping for the best though!

    Enjoyable discussion. I'm one of these people who hasn't played for a while. In my case since about 1992! I started selling off my old collection of figures earlier this year at which point I discovered WFB had been killed off and also of course that it seemed to be coming back. And along the way I discovered that there were people like yourselves who were still playing it anyway. Ended up watching a load of battle reports, both the narrative kind from two of you, Once Bitten etc which are really fun and also the kind where you get to see the dice rolled which can be dull though some are very good and make it possible at least to work out how the game (mostly 6th and 8th) functions. The long and short of it (especially the short) is that I'm keeping the figures I care about and will be trying to get back into the game. This leaves me with rather a lot of very old dwarfs which having seen your Dwarf Army I'd like to ask for some advice about!
    Firstly are there any general difficulties with fielding mostly older models? (I guess Dr Blaxill may have a view on this too of course) Are players with the more 'correct' ones by and large willing to accept them and does it lead to a lot of queries of the 'just what exactly is that supposed to be?' kind? A big concern is that all my dwarfs pre-date the creation of the different elites (the models were still current when 3rd ed Warhammer Armies came out of course and several of them are the ones pictured as the first archetypal hammerer, longbeard etc) so were never sold as such. Not sure whether this is a significant stumbling block or not. Another would be character models - I realise I'm going to have to buy a runesmith, but have also noticed that Lords and Thanes seem to be exclusively big showpiece models whereas back in my day you just picked your favourite dwarf and made him a major hero (or lvl 20 or 25 a bit later on). Is having a 'normal sized for the 1980s' Lord or Thane likely to be a problem?
    I've got a fair few more specific questions - let me know if it's OK to ask though as I realise you may not want a long post (this one's quite long already) on this on your comments thread - and if you'd rather I didn't then no problem, but having found your channel and enjoyed listening to nice people who clearly love old models and new/newish Warhammer it seemed like a good place to try asking!

    • @d6wounds
      @d6wounds  9 місяців тому +4

      Not at all, thanks for asking. We’re all big fans of the older models and don’t let anyone tell you they are the wrong ones! As long as the models look like they’re supposed to be and have broadly the right gear that they have in the game then it’s fine for any event. I like the larger than life character models but normal sized characters are fine.

      @@d6wounds Thanks for the reply, sounds like I might be able to get away with most of the below, but I'm going to go for it and ask what you think of how I'm hoping to use the figures I have, any comments much appreciated:
      I'm sensing that any warrior can be a Longbeard if I decide he is - they're pretty much all worthy models in my view.
      Might be a silly question, but do Hammerers have to have hammers? Wondering if any two handed weapon (can't bring myself to say 'great weapon') will do? Annoyingly most of my dwarfs with hammers have very much single-handed ones, some nice sculpts though.
      Looking at claiming the Dragon Company (I've ended up with two boxes, don't know how, one of them can't have been mine) as Ironbreakers. This one's maybe a bit dodgy as modern dwarfs seem to be very heavily armoured?
      Sappers (the guys who built things on the battlefield to no great effect in 3rd Ed) as miners. They don't all have picks or much armour, but look equipped for mining and hoping that the showing up in strange places rules would make it pretty clear what they were?
      Norse Dwarf Beserkers as Slayers - I think I was buying Space Orks by the time the actual Slayers came out and I didn't really like the models that much anyway. Hoping I can get away with lack of armour and general demeanour with these as I don't really want to go orange if I can help it?
      My cannon is a 'siege bombard' i.e. a thing in a trough with no wheels - think this might be no go?
      Two very small bolt throwers (the ones that were sold with either orcs or dwarfs) - I'm hoping size doesn't matter.
      Goblin Lead Belcher organ gun hopefully with a replacement front panel from a dwarf one if it fits - remains to be seen, otherwise might just turn the existing one back to front.
      Very frustrated that my Goblobber has disappeared. Still have the box and crew right down to the pig, but no machine so looks like a purchase is in order.
      A more general question would be that I've got a very strong impression that 'Great Weapons' (managed it) rather than h/w & shield were very much the thing for Dwarfs in 8th. Not a good thing for my collection. It's probably too early to say, but how do you think The Old World is shaping up on that front?

    • @Knoffles
      @Knoffles 9 місяців тому +1

      Most players are fine with proxies as long as they aren’t too crazy. I can’t see any issue with what you are suggesting. I also have the lead belcher from when I played 3rd and initially used it as my dwarf organ gun. The bombard is obviously a cannon equivalent too. Great weapons are good in 8th as they help wound and reduce armour saves and with the naturally low initiative of a dwarf the always strikes last that you get from a 2HW isn’t as big a drawback for them. As for in the new rules, we just don’t know how it will pan out yet, however high strength doesn’t always equate to high armour penetration, so both options could be very viable. Although the latest iteration of hammerers have two handed weapons, most of the older models didn’t so having a unit with all hammers would work. Most of the players who continued playing (whatever edition) after GW discontinued support, did so due to their love of the game (or as any good dwarf would, due to stubborn denial). As such I’ve not come across any who would kick up a fuss about using whatever you had to hand. That might change if you attended a tournament and possibly with the returning old world game, if it attracts a certain type of player.

      @@ClydeMillerWynantI like your reflections! Partly of course because they have the aroma of 3rd ed about them.
      The answer to all your concerns is pretty much unequivocal- it doesn't matter. You don't have to be wysiwyg and players will respect you a great deal for your old models and in so far as you need slack, you'll get it. Most players find it to be a point of interest to see uncommonly old models on the table and will be only too willing to grant you almost limitless liberties there.
      Many players also use proxies from other miniature manufacturers and this has also served to soften attitudes on wysiwyg from 10 or 15 years ago.

    • @ClydeMillerWynant
      @ClydeMillerWynant 9 місяців тому

      @@Knoffles Thanks for your kind response. I'll go with the hammerers as they are for the time being and the bombard until I can justify buying the old Marauder cannon on Ebay. Quite keen to use the Leadbelcher anyway as it has that unique design to it even though it will obviously just have to have the standard rules. Calling it the morgan gun - it's not clear if that's because it's a cross between a mortar and an organ gun or if it's just named after it's engineer (Morgan Gunn) who built it. He won't answer the question as he thinks people are taking the p*ss. I'm going to be doing my bit to claim the Dwarfs as Welsh by the way, an act of rebellion against LOTR making them Scottish which very much overlooked the part of the country with (historically) the highest proportion of relatively short people who worked underground.
      I'm going to try to pick up a few more old Dwarfs with two handed weapons - got some duplicate h/w Norse Dwarfs to sell to fund it. I noticed Mr D6 Wounds himself (Simon?) fielded a Dwarf army with entirely individual models which is a great achievement - I won't be aiming for that due to the Dragon Company, Bugman's and my Quarrellers (the ones with the plastic crossbows) who all have repeated figures several times over.

    My group kept dropping off slowly as each edition rolled out. Most couldn't afford changing things up every couple of years. So there was only a few who held out until the End Times... and got the rug pulled out from us. So if this game is solid from the start, we'll be able to get the band back together (and have ONE ruleset to use).

    Really interesting episode for certain. Kudos to everyone present.
    Regarding the meta and monsters - we recently had our first tournament where the monsters from the arcanum were allowed and we saw a fair amount of Magma Dragons and the Mega-stomp Monsters around. Personally I've looked at the 'Incarnate Elemental of Death' and thought that it looked immensely powerful, do you have any experience of playing against lists where it's included?
    Also; best of luck in your future WHFB 8th edition games!
    Also; you're absolutely correct about 10 Island Gaming being very good players. Especially Azaro (whom is an absolute gentleman but whom still will play to win), but obviously there's a bunch of really good players in Great Britain as well -- would be awesome to see them going over and participating in a battle report.

      Hi, I'm yet to play against any of the incarnate elementals and yes they do look powerful. However they are all Unstable so not completely broken! Personally I am not a fan of all these beasties from the monstrous arcanum / storm of magic - but 8th has been around for a long time and people are used to more variation now. Maybe we'll ban them in a future tournament haha

    On the "8th edition wasn't just deathstars" discussion I think you've missed the forest for the trees.
    The majority of 8th edition tournaments were and are played with at least some errata and/or composition scores. 8th edition mostly wasn't "8th edition", it was a tweaked version of the game created by tournament organisers and players.
    Most of the changing meta and interesting gameplay I believe is down to that.
    I hope it will be the same in TOW, if they accidentally leave in a broken mechanic or an uncounterable playstyle I don't think we should complain to GW until they do sweeping changes (like in 40k the last several years). We can just change the game ourselves as we always have.

    • @d6wounds
      @d6wounds  9 місяців тому

      Hi, the comp pack does penalise very large units by giving minuses to comp score but not in the actual gameplay. I don't think the lack of prevalence of death stars is down to the comp pack because if people thought they were very powerful then they would gladly take the -1 or -3 penalty for taking a large unit.
